SLCD onboard? - myTouch 4G General

So does it or does it not have a SLCD display? I read conflicting reports that it indeed does have it. Yet some comparison reviews with the G2 say that the Mytouch's screen is not as vivid nor does it have comparable viewing angles. Would those of you that are fortunate to have both devices care to compare the two and chime in.

Doesn't the g2 have a amoled like the nexus 1?

SLCD, not AmoLED for the myTouch 4G.

SLCD for the G2 also.

blah

Based on the reviews so far, it looks like Vibrant > G2 > MyTouch in terms of display.

I heard slcd also. Bought the phone today and I am not impressed with the screen at all coming from a nexus one.

it looks pretty good to me. The text is much sharper than my vibrant.

Not sure but have had both and the mytouch is just as good as the g2 screen wise and better all around. Really impressed with this phone so far. I got it to hold me over till my hd7 arrives but really like it will keep both

There is no way the MyTouch 4G has a SLCD. I've had the phone next to a Vibrant, Nexus One, and a G2 and the screen quality ranks in exactly that order.
The Vibrant and Nexus One have amazing screens, the G2 is acceptable, but the MyTouch is very disappointing. Guess they had to subsidize the cost of the FFC and extra RAM somehow right?
Blacks and viewing angles are just not up to snuff... I guess you can't have it all right?

Also the text is very close to ip4 retina display IMHO. Beats S amoled display for text and browsing albeit colors aren't as vibrant for vids and such

From what i can tell the MyTouch 4G has a normal LCD. I own both devices and i can tell you side by side same app or website the G2 wins hands down. Thats the first thing i missed coming from my G2 was the screen =/ All to save costs i suppose.

No i dont think they're the same, both are s-lcd BUT, for some reason, The MT4g's LCD is a little bit sharper than the G2's

I guess beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder. Having come from a N1 I like how it's not totally washed out in the sunlight. The colors seem more lifelike to me as well, BUT, the viewing angle is not as wide as the N1 screen.

I have to disagree. G2 is sharper and colors are far more saturated. I can not find any information stating the MT4G has anything more than a normal LCD.
from Snugs hTc ViSiON

I have the G2 and myTouch 4G sitting in front of me and clearly the myTouch 4G is not using SLCD. The G2's screen looks sharper and has better color saturation, while the MT4G looks brighter overall.
If you run nenamark on both devices you can clearly see better color saturation on the G2. Not even hard to tell.
However, the MT4G's screen feels like glass, possibly gorilla glass. Doesn't feel nearly as plasticy as the G2's screen. Additionally, the G2's display looks "sunken in" if you know what I'm talking about. The actual display is a few mm below the screen itself and it looks bad. The MT4G's screen looks like its in the glass itself, similar to the Vibrant.

Where is the logic? You speak with such certainty. Surely you can accept that not all SLCDs are alike? The point is - we don't know.

Sigh... That's dissapointing. This device looks great but the screen not having slcd is putting me off. Although the glass feel you guys are describing is plus. I could be wrong but so far it looks like 3.7" screens are only sporting SLCD. And I don't see why they bothered to put a an extra .01" on the MyTouch. I guess they really had to cut cost.

Just came back from the T-Mobile store, and man, the screen on the mytouch was very dissappointing. They could have at least put SLCD on it.

Does the Thunderbolt NOT have an SLCD display

I was going to get the thunderbolt, but then I came across the slashgear review that said it has a regular tft display. So then I checked HTC's website and it says TFT.
Hmm...
Whatever it is, it looks pretty nice.

Yeah, that pic looks awful. Good thing mine doesn't look anything like that. Might want to look at one in person before you judge it.
Coming from the Fascinate, the screen is the worst part of the Thunderbolt. We'll see if I used to it after a week or two.
I also used to have a fascinate.
Screen is a huge factor in buying a phone since, you know, that's the thing we look at on the phone lol.
How many of you are gonna view your screen from an angle?

You sound like the baby in the picture.
Are you guys seriously getting mad??? I'm trying to figure out information about the screen because I wanted this phone, but the screen is a HUGE factor in my decision. I can't check it out in person until after work. Anyone have any pics of the screen at a direct angle?
The screen is TFT and it is not a very good one in my opinion. I don't care much about the viewing angles - for me the colors are pretty poor and it is not very sharp. The lack of sharpness is mostly due to blowing up the resolution on a larger screen but the colors on this thing are pretty bad when compared to my amoled Incredible and iPhone 4. Not crisp, not very good. The screen is very nice for video (due to the size) but otherwise completely unremarkable when compared with devices a year older.
Combined with the battery life and some serious Sense bugs, probably sending this one back. My coworker already sent his back today.
I guess I am disappointed with all the buildup of this "flagship" phone. Seems they could have presented a tighter package. I really wanted to like this phone - oh well.
Its been reported that the screen is SLCD its better than my EVOs screen. I personally dont like amoled screens, there too saterated imo. HTC is moving from amoled screens to SLCD LIKE the bolt.

Whatever the screen is its amazing. Vibrant and sharp.
I went from an iPhone 4 to Fascinate and now Thunderbolt out of those 3 the iphone had the best display and the fascinate had by far the worst i hated the screen the colors just looked fake and made everything look cartoony. I absolutely LOVE the screen on the thunderbolt SLCD ftw!
I've got a Dinc and aDX (both rooted FWIW), and a Xoom. Picked up a Thunderbolt over the past weekend. Love the screen. Much better than the DX, and I personally don't care for the saturation of the Dinc AMOLED. T-bolt screen is on par with the Xoom which is gorgeous.
The screen owns the crap out of my Droid, which was confirmed to possess a normal TFT screen.
The T-Bolt definitely has a Super TFT LCD. I'm not sure a Super AMOLED would be necessarily better at this point, except for battery savings on 4G.
honestly this phone looks much better than my eris, and my incredible. and most definitely better than my g-tablet lol.
there is no angle where the screen loses color and it is extremely crisp looks much better than the dx when held right next to it. It just seems sharper. same res though.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Bolt screen. It's bright, vibrant and colors are very nice. I came from a Nexus One AMOLED screen.
Screen on TBolt rocks, at least on mine it does.
how are you gonna judge a phones display without seeing one in person? nerd much?
this screen looks great to me...but I couldn't care less whether you get the phone or not..

I agree. The screen is the biggest disappointment to me. It's not bad, it's just not up to par, in my taste, with either the iPhone 4 or the Nexus S and Galaxy S SAMOLED screens. It's the least satisfying thing about the phone for me, but not sure it's a deal breaker. I'd prefer a SAMOLED Thunderbolt, though!

The screen should be a huge factor in your decision, but no picture on the internet is going to give you an idea of how it looks in person...
re: Nexus One comments, it's a first generation AMOLED (no S) device with a pretty lousy implementation of it on top of everything else. Totally unusable in sunlight, totally oversaturated, totally wonky. Not sure about DINCs or anything else.
I've have every model of iPhone, including the iPhone 4, a Nexus S, Nexus 1, Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy S Vibrant, Thunderbolt, and used to have an EVO 4G. The iPhone 4's display is pretty amazing, but I think I still prefer the SAMOLEDs.
SAMOLEDs are a tough act to beat in my opinion, but only because I like INKY blacks...total lack of color/light blacks, which only the SAMOLED/AMOLED displays can deliver. Compare a Thunderbolt to a Nexus S in a darkened room with a black screen on the phone and the Nexus S will emit no light...the Thunderbolt will emit a glowing black-ish backlit light. Not important to all, but something I really notice. As said above, not a deal breaker to me, but I'll jump ship to the first decent LTE phone to come along with a SAMOLED screen.
I do not have any problem with my display. Yeah, AMOLED and SAMOLED displays will have better contrast and more vibrant colors... but I do not have any issue with my TB display.
I came from an AMOLED Nexus One.

[Q] Display readable in sunlight?

To the lucky ones who received their Sensation... I've a Desire Z for the moment and would like to buy a second one, focusing on the Sensation.
I've been hating not being able to read my display in sunlight, far away of what I saw on ithings, even with full bright display settings.
Is it the same on the Sensation? if so, I might look for another phone (Galaxy S2?) because I can't tolerate it anymore :-(
The Sensation ain't gonna be much different than other LCDs, like the Desire Z. The SGS2 might have an edge since the glass is thinner (less glare) and the contrast can be bumped very high. However, if you really want a good outdoor display, you might wanna just get the Optimus Black since it has a 700 nit LCD. It falls a bit short on specs but it is very slim and light.

Never said LCDs were unreadable.
I've just put my HTC Sensation in direct sunlight, and the screen is very readable. Much better than my HTC Desire AMOLED ever was, in fact. I tried to take a photo to show you all, but it came out very badly. The surface of the screen is a lot "glossier" than the Desire's, but it must be able to reach a higher brightness level.
great to know thanks alot... im tired of not being able to see in direct sunlight with my super amoled galaxy s
Is your galaxy s on CM7? That's the only easy I can see you not being able to read this screen in direct light. Speaking from experience when I flashed CM7, that was the ONLY time my screen appeared dim.

i honestly will not buy another samsung phone... i tried to trick my co worker into trading my sgs4g for his myt4g and he was like yea at first then he was like lets switch simcards and see how it goes after he felt how light the phone was in comparison he was like oh hells no... and he is not into tech and stuff like that.. but he sure as hell knew what quality felt like compared to light toy feeling junk.
As I understood from reviews out there, the Sensation screen is a step forward under sunlight compared to Desire and DHD but still behind Arc and SGS2.
With my DHD I can read the screen with the 9am sun but not with the noon sun (perhaps more UVs?) I wonder if the Sensation will perform better in both scenes!
IF yes then I hope the speaker will be at least 2x more powerfull than the tweaked DHD one (custom kernel) and my choice is made for the Sensation
When I first got my sensation, I was one of the ones that complained about the screen in bright sunlight.
I've just been out today (it's very sunny ) and it's much better, very readable in fact.
Probably something to do with me turning 'auto-brightness' on in the last week!
If any of you have upgraded from an HD2, how does the Sensation's screen readability in sunlight compare to the HD2? I have an HD2 and it's pretty much completely washed out in direct sunlight.

Screen quality question

I want to know how text and images appear on the infuses screen. I have the HTC inspire and thought about jumping ship to a larger screen device. is it worth it to do so?
Im upgrade from inspire to infuse and believe me no competition on screen infuse rocks text is the same sharp like inspire but more rich black
Things are somewhat pixelated but otherwise nice.
Sent from my Infuse 4G
How bad is it?
depends on how close you hold it to your face.
it's not that bad but a screen this big should be qhd resolution. i still like it though
Avoid screen "protectors"... at least the ones available right now. I was a little disappointed in the screen until I removed mine.
Now - gorgeous screen.

I don't know what these other people are talking about pixelation but the screen on my Infuse is freaking beautiful!! Well worth the upgrade IMO.

Question about the screen S4G

Good day fellas,
I'm seeing a lot of video and comments on screen comparisons between Htc sensation 4G and Gs 2 and on.
My question is, I'm currently on SG 1 looking to upgrade to either sensation 4G or GS2, I'm concerned about the screen quality, I'm debating wether I should order the phone or not. I can get it at a very low price (employee pricing).
The phone has a higher res. Screen, I'm trying to convince myself that the difference in screen quality is not that big, but I would like you guys to tell me what you think from your experiences, is the GS2 worth the extra $, is the screen really that much better than the S4G, anything else from your point of view that should be considered???
Thanks in advance,
Rodi

No screen washout for me, as well.
Also something to add, in almost all the videos comparisons, when looking at the phones side by side the sensation looks practically white in comparison to the gs2. My only concern with the phone is the screen.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I personally got a Sensation while my GF has a GS2, you can clearly see that both screens aren't the same: one is SLCD & the other is AMOLED.
The GS2 has saturated, neon-ish colors which at some times seem a bit too much, it is particularly notable in the android market: the green is VERY saturated. When put side by side it can make the Sensation seem very washed out.
I have also read on wikipedia that AMOLED displays have a shorter life compared to SLCD because of the organic components in it. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in.
After a few weeks of use I've got used to my phone and am truly happy about my display, even though it isn't as saturated as the GS2 it still is a great LCD display with rich colors, clear whites & deep blacks and my movies look crystal sharp on it. Also the extra resolution is very much appreciated and is quite notable when I compare it to my GF's GS2, specially in the menus, mails & internet browser - the pixels aren't noticeable.
What I can tell you is that I was faced with the same choice as you: HTC Sensation or SGS2 and the display was also the most important thing for me since it's the way you interact with your phone. And i'm glad I chose the Sensation
Cool thanks for the info, I just ordered it from my work

Exactly. Most people are used to washed out colours from LCDs, so they see nothing wrong. But it isn't for nothing that TV manufacturers are always trying to push the vibrant colours of their screens.
For me, ever since getting the uberawesome GNote, I can't stand the faded looking colours of regular LCDs.
Besides I like screens with really nice blacks and colours that look alive.. So SAMOLED HD FTW....
I agree, the rich deep blacks on OLED screens really do spoil you.
Yep, I have a SGS and whenever i look at phones with non OLED displays I pity them. My friend has the SGS i9003 ( the one with S-LCD display) and we compared them side by side, the SAMOLED screen looks WAY better than SLCD. ( more than 6 people were there and we all agreed). Its all about the blacks baby ..
how would the screen of the arc s be rated alongside these phones???
I agree ,the Oled display use less baterry power than other displays, and i love it..
It's just sad whenever I show my screen to some1 who bought a phone and said "It was cheap, it is small, and it's not heavy." And they see my GNex, and they say "Awh, me wun that scweeeeeeeeeeeen." All I can say is.. Pwned by low-end.
I agree OLED is best solution, even if the color is not as real as some others LCD, but I think this will be solved in a near future.
Just think that Samsung, that is the 1st word producer of LCD displays, has just started the spin-off of the LCD department and has declared that the future of his research is on OLED. Say also that Samsung is going to spend a pharaonic amount of money in research for the next year, I'm looking forward to see results.
