Stuck on ATT World Phone screen - Captivate General

Phone is stuck on att white world phone logo and is not going to download mode by holding the volume buttons and power, and or volume down and power.
When i hold the buttons and plug it in and all i see is a damn battery that goes on then off. Odin is open and does seem change.
All this just to get some bloatware and fix a gps.

Try the third option which is the only one works for me:
1. Take battery out and put back
2. Hold both Vol buttons. Don't touch the power button.
3. Plug in the USB cable to your PC. Don't touch the power button.
Your phone should boot into download mode right away. Remember, don't ever touch the power button.

WOW
wow dude perfect you saved me from freaking out! hah SOLVED thanks a million bad power button!

You're welcome. There is now even another hardware hack that can force the phone into download mode even if none of the buttons work. It is posted in i9000 forum.

Entering Download Mode but odin not working
I can get in to download mode but when I open odin3 there is nothing in the text boxes and when I press start it just says all threads completed 0/0 failed. And does the same thing for master clear.
When I turn the phone on with SIM in and hold the up/down + power it enters the clockwork stuff and I have tried the restore default option and recovery option. I was hoping download mode would help but didn't.
If anybody can help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Here is the procedure you need to follow:
1. Install the proper driver so that ODIN can see your phone when plugged in. Drivers are listed in the thread where you download ODIN.
2. Open ODIN with phone not attached. Select the firmware file (*.rar) you want to flash in PDA field.
3. Power off the phone and enter into download mode and connect the phone to PC.
4. Wait for the driver to install and your phone recognized. It will show up in one of the boxes in ODIN.
5. Once your phone is recognized, press Start button on ODIN to start the flash process.
6. Leave the PC and phone alone for a few minutes and pray (that your phone didn't get bricked in the process).

Ok I got it to recognize but I don't know what (*.rar) I am supposed to flash. Do i just put the cognition folder in it or what.
Thanks for the reply

I want to flash cognition but when i press pdf on odin3 it doesn't see it...any ideas?

Cog does not use Odin. Just get clockwork recovery and install it. Then boot into recovery and flash cog. Go to stickies in dev section, there are guides.

I try to select cognition.rar but says it needs a .tar file. What do I do to make it work?

Cog does not install with Odin unless dg added that. You need to unrar it. Download winrar and extract it, see what's inside.

This guide lays it out pretty well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Personally, here's what I use to do. Go to the Dev section and search for ClockworkMod Recovery. Search that thread for the update.zip. I'm sure it's in there. Put the update.zip on your internal storage, ie, when you plug phone into pc with USB the thing you mount and store file on, not an added SD card.
Boot into stock recovery. Choose reinstall packages, it reboots. Choose reinstall packages again, now your in Clockwork. Choose > install zip from sdcard > choose zip file > then navigate to Cognition (assuming you've put that on your internal storage also) and select it. It flashes, choose reboot. Bam! You're running Cognition.

[Q] downloading mode?

okay so i've seen where you use the volume up + down + power to go into downloading mode but how do i get to the little digger guy with the shovel? because using odin i dont know if i need to be on the screen with the shovel guy or on the screen where i have the option to reinstall packages, reboot the phone can someone help me?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
reading the stickies is a good place to start
but i've followed that thread step by step and i cannot for the life of me get odin to work
every time i do the volume up+down+power it goes into system recovery mode
If your phone functions you can use adb to get in there too. From your SDK tools folder just type "adb reboot download" and it'll send you directly to download mode
its not the recovery mode i have the problem getting to but when i do get there odin wont recigonize my phone and i need to reset to the stock rom which is why i have a feeling i need to get to the android guy with the shovel

Follow these steps exactly:
Close odin (if it's open)
Unplug phone from USB
Remove SIM/SD card
Remove Battery
Open Odin
Put battery back in
Plug in USB
Hold both volume keys THEN hold power
Continue holding all 3 keys, the screen will come on, DO NOT LET GO
The screen will go black, then turn on again- as soon as it turns off for the second time let go of the power button but continue holding the volume keys.
In a couple seconds you should get the download screen

I understand the frustration, there are a lot of stickies currently and numerous pages to browse to find information on entering download mode.
Try this:
1.) Remove the Battery, SIM card and micro SD Card.
2.) Reinstall the Battery. (DO NOT TURN ON THE DEVICE)
3.) Hold ONLY the volume buttons down and then insert the USB cable.
This should bring you into download mode (The android guy/shovel and will say "downloading....")
You do not need to press the power button at all for this method. Also, be sure to have installed the drivers for the device.

Epic Recovery Mode & Download Mode

Just FYI in case anyone wants to know:
For download mode, with the phone turned off, phold the number 1 key on the QWERTY keyboard and the power button simultaneously
For recovery mode, with the phone turned off, hold Volume Down, CAmera, and Power simultaneously.
You navigate with volume UP/DOWN, select with HOME, Menu toggles to "Manual Mode", whatever that it.
Enjoy

Mass Storage mount... Basically, does download mode turn it into a mass storage USB device?
Oh I gotcha. No it does not.
had epic 2.1.1 rooted with one-click method from sdx, seemed fine after superuser and busybox install or several hours.
HOWEVER, after installing Lauchad (maybe coincidence), my phone went into a cont. reboot every 30sec about. I managed to uninstall some recent apps with no avail.
I am doing a recovery/wipe-factory now....seems hung at little image of package opening with droid logo....
Should I force power-cycle?
Thanks!

Either use Odin to flash a new rom, or pull your battery out of the phone. As long as it's not mid-flash, you can turn it off without consequence. Obviously if you were flashing a rom, you wouldn't want to be pulling the battery out in the middle of it, of course...
FYI this mode isn't something anyone should need to access regularly. Please see this post for more information on the use of Download mode and how to return your phone to stock.

Update.zip? You mean for Recovery mode? No, that's not necessary for custom roms or anything... You would want to use Clockwork recovery, not the stock recovery, and the .zip can be named anything. Update.zip is generally how the stock recovery flashes an OTA update after it's downloaded. If I recall, it has to pass a checksum before it'd flash - you couldn't just zip some files together and call it "update.zip" and expect it to work. With Clockwork Recovery you would.
Thank you very much... Yeah it was not mid flash, which would be way worse. I am just getting accustomed to all the different menus and various screens. I got into the mode, just to give it a try and was worried about just pulling the battery. Didnt think it would really matter since i wasnt flashing or anything. But figured I would ask first to save some headaches. Trying to read up and learn all I can about this thing. Clockworked and rooted, getting ready for the first rom go!

My last hope to unbrick?

The phone is bricked. I flashed to the i9000 firmware and was about to root the phone and didn't bother to flash the new kernel yet. I get into recovery to go to reinstall packages to install the root, and to my surprise the power button didn't work to select since I had the wrong kernel. SO I do adb reboot download and then I try to flash the new kernel. Odin just freezes there and doesn't do anything, I unplug the data cable and then it says FAIL! on Odin. I take out the battery and put it back in to see if the phone will still boot, and now I'm stuck on the phone/computer. People have tried helping and they told me about every single key combo to put it in download and none of them work. When I told Vol+ and power the screen flashes black and then I wait for it to do it the second time and i let go of the power and it stays there at phone/computer. I've done everything I can possibly see to do it and this is my last hope to get it to work again, or else I have to take it to AT&T and lose all my stuff on the internal SDcard.
EDIT: AT&T refuses to replace the phone.
From designgears' one click Odin thread. Not sure if you tried this, but it might work.

[GUIDE] Noobs guide to Odin to flash your SGS4G (Windows)

UPDATED 04/08/11 - Thanks for the comments to make this process less confusing
I have seen a lot of questions about how to use Odin to flash your SGS4G. I am a noob as well and had to search throughout the forums to get the answers so here it is, plain and simple:
1. Download the Stock + Root rom (.tar file) posted by Krylon360 (kudos) HERE, or a rom from anyone else that has one being built for the SGS4G (use caution, do not attempt to flash a rom for a different device!)
2. Install the SGS usb driver 32-bit or 64-bit
3. Download Odin 1.7 HERE and RUN IT FIRST (before you plug in your phone in step 5 - this allows Odin to find your phone)
4. Remove your memory and sim card (I did this because Odin failed to flash my phone when they were present)
5. Put your SGS4G into Download mode (Hold volume up + volume down then plug in your usb cable running from the compy) You should see a big triangle symbol
6. Wait for your computer to install all drivers (takes a minute)
7. In Odin click the PDA button and select the rom (.tar file)
8. Make certain that Re-Partition is not checked
9. Click the start button and let it do its magic (takes a couple minutes)
10. After it completes your phone will reboot into recovery mode
11. Select reboot system now with the power button (takes a couple minutes to establish the new system)
Like everyone has said before, we are not responsible if you brick your phone. This process worked flawlessly for me.
My thanks go out to the people that are working on the roms and recovery systems that make this all possible. You should thank them by donating or by clicking the thanks button.

I've never heard of you having to root your phone for using Odin to flash your phone. As long as you can get into download mode. You should be able to flash your phone using Odin.
Also I've never had to remove my memory or sim card either. This is true with my SGS4G and when I had my Vibrant.
Please provide download links to Odin and stock TAR for the Super Noobs. Not all noobs know how to use the Search..hehe.
i never removed my memory card or sim and it still works fine
Step 1 -- Get a Windows box
Also, ODIN is available off links at http://www.samfirmware.com/

The easiest way for me was to start with the battery out, then plug in the usb and hold down both volume buttons and then put the battery back in. Not sure if this is necessary but the way your describing sounds like it puts you in recovery mode. Does the usb cable being in automatically put you in download mode? (at work or I would test this)

If the usb cable is plugged in first, it sets the phone into a battery charge mode (not sure if that's what it is called exactly) and does not allow you to go into download mode if you try pressing vol up and down.

Thats the quickest way to get into download mode.
I either do it that way and pull the battery out first or when the phone is off I'll hold the volume up and down and then plug in the usb cable. Either way works best with me.
I know the OP does not list this but I use this quick and easy way with my phone plugged in and turned on.
open command prompt (windows key + r, then type cmd)
cd C:\Android-sdk-windows\tools (C drive is where my sdk folder is)
adb reboot download
The phone will reboot and go right into download mode. never have to pull battery or push multiple buttons. Hope I dont confuse anyone

[Q] Download Mode Help Soft-Brick

OK, so i went and flashed an old backup. Now i can't enter recovery or download mode at all. Can someone help me out? My phone doesn't go passed the SGS4G boot screen. It just stays there. Left it on for three hours and nothing. The only PC i have access to does not have internet. I am typing this on my backup Nokia X2.
Your going to need to download Odin 1.85 and then download any 2.3 and above up to 2.3.6 firmware. I highly recommend also downloading Dr honks kj 1 kernel for it comes with voodoo lag fix and clock work mod recovery.but u must read alot to find what you need because u could possibly ruin your phone permanently!!! Good luck and like I said you must read... it will be your best bet towards reviving your phone and keeping it operational.
I know that and all but no matter what i do. I cannot enter download mode at all. I can't even enter recovery. The only buttons i can press are the only 3 hardware keys. My soft-keys don't work.
When u can use your computer again.set up Odin then plug your USB cable in then before you connect your phone make sure you take the battery out leave the backing off your phone.then plug your USB to your phone be sure to hold vol. Up and down simultaneously then keep volume up down held down and put your battery in, that should put your phone in download option it should also warn you that placing a custom rom or firmware could pose a problem to your phone then I believe the option to put your phone in download mode is volume up once u push up with the volume key you should immediately be put in Andy's download mode.that's really the other alternative that has worked for me always. I certainly hope u get your phone running again bro otherwise you may have to send your phone to warranty replacement that's if its still valid 4 u or if u pay for insurance on your phone, I saw your posts and know your familiar with several how to's and such so like u said good luck to you homez.

Your other option is to download the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) & install it. It contains 'adb' which will allow you to reboot the phone into download or recovery mode.
Go to http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html, download and install the SDK. You only need to install the Tools part, not all of the other parts.
Once done, open a command prompt, cd to the platform-tools directory where the SDK installed, and issue the command:
adb reboot download
That should get you there.
