Is there any way to lock the phone in a 2G setting only? I know there are apps in the market, but they are just shortcuts to a non existent option in the settings menu. My phone drains battery exceptionally quick in class since it is always trying to find a 3g signal. I don't really need a 3g signal because all I use it for is texting. Dropping seventy percent in three hours is sort of ridiculous

flash an i9000 rom, it has setting to lock in at 3G or 2G

I Lose my data connection several times a day even when having 3 or 4 signal bars for hours at a time.
I had an iphone for 2 years and never had this problem even though the att signal is spotty at best where i live. Once i lose the data connection it refuses to come back even when i have a solid 3 or 4 signal bars for hours plus.
ive tried every combination of using task killers to not using them to toggling airplane mode, toggling apn settings and gps settings and even rebooting the phone, even the reboot doesnt always fix it........
the most successful i have gotten has been to toggle airplane mode on
run a task killer 2 or 3 times and then turn off airplane mode and then toggle the apn switch off and then back on
anybody have any insight ?
this really interferes with my plan to drop the $20 unlimited text package and use google voice. when my edge connection just disappears on me
Nobody?

looks like you're alone on this one. go get your phone replaced
Get a new sim card it worked for me
I'm having this issue as well. I'm only noticing it about once a day, but its really irritating.
New SIM is fixing this for people?
Happens to me occasionally but not often enough to be a real issue.
From my Samsung Captivate
So those of you who lost data connection.
How are getting it to come back on? Mine seems to get worse each time. Could there be some ill effects of iphone data package being on my account still?

I didn't have this problem until the past few days. I've been traveling in Colorado for those two days, and I've actually had a data connection less time than it's been disconnected. When. I go into the menu and choose About -> Status, it shows "Mobile network type": EDGE, "Mobile connection status": Disconnected. I haven't been able to figure out what's causing it. Sometimes restarting it or turning flight mode on/off gets the data connection going.
Back at home in Austin (a 3g city) I've not experienced it once. Now, in edge data areas of rural Colorado and Durango, I've experienced it most of the time.
You're definitely not alone in this, but unfortunately I don't know how to fix it yet.

guys, get your phone or sim card replaced and see if that helps. This is not typical behavior for this phone.
I had my 2 year old sim card replaced and my apparently my account still listed Iphone data plan and not android data plan .. they assured me that was the problem and this would fix it .
....however tonight it still happened.. it was very brief.. but still..
seems to be something with spotty service and only edge. wish there was an option to disable 3g on the phone.
maybe its a bug and getting stuck searching for 3g
there is an option to disable it. check the secret menus thread here on xda. The sim card replacement is for faulty sim card not faulty data on their system. Your new sim could be acting up or it may be your phone. Doesnt hurt to get them both replaced, give it a shot.

Same problem here almost exactly. Ever since taking a trip to Colorado from Austin, when on edge network the data connection craps out despite the fact I can still make calls and text. At first I thought I was just roaming but then after looking in connection settings it said I was connected to att.
Its a really weird and annoying problem. The way I beat it when the data connection drops is I turn on flight mode, then turn radio back on and then turn wifi on and then off. A really weird procedure but it almost always works.
Anyone found a way to prevent this yet?

Try getting a new SIM card. My Nexus One and Motorola Milestone do this (lose data) a few times a day. Same SIM, different devices, and across different ROMS. My Captivate even did it. A new SIM could very well fix this issue for you.
I am in a "4g extended area" where it constantly drops to 3g and constantly goes in and out. My battery is draining by increments of like 10% per hour while I am not using my phone. I am currently using the tesla 1.5 rom. Is there a possibility there is an issue with my sim card for this issue or just straight up a problem in verizons network? When I leave wifi on the battery doesnt constantly drain on standby any tips would be appreciated thanks
Try the LTE OnOff app on the market. Setting it to CDMA auto (prl) might help in spotty 4G coverage.

If you're not in a good 4G area your battery will die very fast because the radio's are constantly searching and switching back and forth between 3G and 4G, you should either use LTE mode to try and lock on LTE only or turn LTE off completely and use CDMA Auto.
Same problem here as you. stuck in the grey area at home.
I would rather be in s grey area like you than nothing where I am.

I know your pain... I'm exactly 1/2 a mile from the 4G coverage area... im in the "Extended 4G area" and i'll be lucky if I get 3G on this phone let alone 4G... I have to use wifi to get data out there. Which is kinda annoying beacuse if I go to the local grocery store ( 1/2 a mile away ) I get blazing 4G ...
This NEVER happened with my DX or Fascinate... they were both on perfect 3G data.
Hopefully Big Red will "Turn up the volume" and get better signal to those of us on the outskirts of the Main 4G areas.

LOL Same here
welll...
I don't think you can find one because there isn't really a switch. Cause unlike sprint, which can use wi-max, and Verizon, which uses LTE, there is really no change in the network in T-mobiles service. Cause there is GSM(Edge/2G), UMTS(3G), HSDPA and HSDPA+(4G). Cause even on my Nexus One i could use HSDPA, and i would see slight speed increase, but only "4G" phones can take full advantage of the new towers. So, there is not exactly anyway to turn 4G of outside of switching to 2G or simply turning the internet off...
Found an app called switch pro allows me to toggle data on and off. turning it off when not in use saves me a lot of battery.

I use one called 2g-3g on off by CurveFish. I dont htink there is any way to have a true toggle (like wifi or BT), but this brings me to the settings screen and I can adjust it easy enough as needed. It's about the best we can hope for at this point
The the 4g is actually 3g, it uses the same radio. So there is no way to toggle it off, unless you want to use 2g.
I second the CurveFish App, very simple and reduces clicks necessary to disable data.
They just turned on LTE in my area of Hawaii (though I don't think officially.) But it constantly switches back from 4G to 3G and vice versa. Sometimes it gets stuck with no data and I have to toggle airplane mode. My buddies phone in same spot could show 4G and mines 3G and vice versa. This significantly drains the battery and not a very good experience. My question is I noticed in the app that we used to turn off 4G there is an option for LTE Only, does anyone know of there would be any negative reprocussions on leaving it on 4G only? Like could it harm the phone, would any certain features/apps not work properly, etc?
I ran it like that today. Data connection seemed better and constant. When I looked at my phone throughout the day I did not notice a time where there was no data. My calls/texts/emails came through like normal. Battery seemed better. Left work with more battery than my LG Revolution which is normally the other way around. I did not run into any negative impact with setting it to LTE Only. Can anyone think of any warnings?

All it does is set your radio to only use 4G. If you get to an areabthat has no 4g or wifi you would have to switch back to 3g or 3g/4g auto in order to get data.
No harm, just won't switch out of 4g unless you do it. Probably why the data lock is better and battery life as well.
If you get solid 4G just use LTE only and switch it if you loose 4G.

You are fine running LTE only. All you will get with that is 4G & 1x, so either extremely fast data, or slow as a turtle. I use that setting almost all the time here in Jersey, I live right outside of NYC so I get constant 4G coverage. It does help with the battery life too.
Anyone know of a toggle widget that will put phone in 2g and back to 4g without having to go to the setting screen? I save so much battery not being on 4g. 5hrs and only used 25% battery on 2g vs 55% on 4g with the same usage..
ive been looking for the same, except to toggle to 3G

for the Sensation 3G & 4G are the same thing. whether you're on UTMS or HSPA really would be negligible when it comes to battery drain. It's when you start actually getting 4G like LTE where it'd be a noticeable difference.
This is why i was asking about 2g cause GSM does not drain my battery and the temp on the phone is at 89.5 not 105.5 as when im on 4g.
I use the 2g 3g widget from curve fish doing in the market...it's more of a shortcut, but takes me where I need to go quicker than through settings

Settings - Wireless & networks - Mobile network settings.
Set network mode to GSM only (instead of GSM/WCDMA auto)
SwitchPro's widget will take you to Mobile network settings. That's the best I've found.
Widgetsoid is good, has dozens of functions and that's one of them. Plus, has aosp power widget appearance.

This is it.
I searched for a program like this before and everyone kept giving answers like widgets that take me to the setting page. Im pretty sure the type we want doesnt exist, and you would have to put a custom mod on for that to work

Android does not allow direct switching like that thats why allmost all widgets take you to the settings
Try this
