Hi,
I've had my captivate for about 2 months now, and after a few shallow drops along the way, I now suffer from speaker problems as described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778583
Slapping the speaker does solve the problem temporarily, after many missed calls and alarm, I cannot deal with it any longer. I bought my phone on August 18 from wireless.amazon.com so I do have some kind of receipt.
So the question is, how do I get this fixed/get replacement from att or samsung. Thanks in advance.
I had this issue as well. I took the phone apart following the instructions here: h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022. I detached and reattached the speaker securing the connection. It has been a month and (knock on wood) the problem has not reoccurred. I hope this helps you.

I have the normal speaker volume issues but also I've noticed some even more annoying problems:
1 - The speaker on my TP seems to suffer form its own interference. When the speaker is being used during a call I can hear the usual buzzing sound that mobile phones make when they're near speakers in its own loudspeaker?! Surely this isn't right? Anyone else get this?
2 - When my TP's loudspeaker is activated or deactivated it makes a small speaker pop sound. Is this normal or do I have a faulty unit? It happens just before any sound is emitted from it, and then shortly after the sound has finished and it goes back silent. Seems its when the speaker receives power ready to emit sound, then again when it powers back off.
Coming from a Universal (MDA Pro) the sound quality on the TP is very poor in comparison but then it is like half the size so it's manageable. This popping sound is very annoying, though.
I'm using the stock ROM that came with it. I'm on T-Mob UK (it's one of the Expansys ones).
Any ideas how I come test / overcome / put up with this? Please let me know if you do OR DO NOT have this problem also so I know whether to return it as a faulty handset or not.
Thank you in advance,
LLOYDY
I had the same symptoms as you are describing, as well as the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=419761
Do you get this problem too? try playing a music file so the speaker is functioning and download a file from the internet. I only found the interference with a GPRS signal and not HSDPA.
If I were you I would get it replaced. This is what I did and the replacement did not have this problem.
Hi, Thanks for your reply.
Yes I get this same issue. When using HSDPA and using Opera say there is no interference. However, when using GPRS and playing music the interference is REALLY annoying over the top of the music.
Is this not normal? Also did you get the annoying popping sound too?
LLOYDY
That's all right, glad to help, what this forum is here for.
Yes I used to get the popping sound ocassionally too. It is not normal, confirmed by the fact that my replacement unit doesn't suffer from these issues.
Excellent. Good to know (Well, in a way!). Just emailed the retailer (Expansys) about getting an exchange sorted out so hopefully I will hear back from them by the end of the day. I haven't dealt with them before (this phone was my first time) so this will be the test to see how good a retailer they are.
Again, thanks for your help. I'll post updates here for others with the same problem etc.

My phone was fine for 2 months and now the speaker 'pops' (and picks up that 'gsm sound' occasionally). I replied to the other thread about this too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2884075
I too had the GSM noise problem which seemed to get worse as the phone got warm after extended use.
Even though everybody I showed the phone to commented on the noise, upon return Expansys insisted on "no fault found" after pratting about for 3 weeks about it.
In any event, the threat of legal action seemed to being them to their senses but I will not be getting my replacement from them.
Local HTC service took my TP in for a motherboard replacement due to this problem (I kinda went around expansys altogether..): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3018645&postcount=6
I would suggest to anyone coming across this problem to return the handset immediately and ask for a full refund (under the long distance selling rule, believe allows you 10 or 14 days to return the device, no questions asked) . Don't faff about with relying on proving to them there is a fault, that is a recipe for stress.
Do you have problems with bad speaker sound quality when making calls?
When making calls there is a crunching/scratching sound from the front speaker. It sounds as if it's cracked or as if the cable is poorly fitted or exposed to interference of some kind.
Since this is my second Touch Pro, the first had the same problem and considered DOA, I'm wondering if you're experiencing the samt problem.

Edit: speaker -> front speaker
Hrm..
I just RMA'd my TP 'coz of this problem (literally just got back from the post office). So are you saying that your new one also has this problem?

i encounter this scratchin sound then suddenly my speaker go dead..now it is in svc center...
I have it too.
So does this mean its just the way the phone is? What a load of cr4p...
Can someone please respond and say if they DO NOT have this. This will give me some hope...

Still no update from Expansys UK (the retailer) despite having sent it back to them a week ago. I've called and emailed with no response. All I ever get is "we currently have no update on the status of your return other than we received it".
VERY poor service. I didn't expect this kind of service from them. I will definitely be avoiding them in the future. I have requested a refund and contract disconnection now as this is ridiculous. I doubt I'll get a response tho....

I havenĀ“t noticed anything like that :/ But I have a problem with sensory overload 3D, it gives me the broken glass screen...
third device is incoming
Just got a message that my third device is sent. Meaning the two previous was accepted as DOA... We'll see if the new phone is working better.
Hi Guys,
Maybe I'm stupid, but could you explain the bad speaker means the receiver which is in front of phone, or the speaker in back of phone?
My bad speaker was the loudspeaker at the back of the phone. Although the volume is poor on the earpiece speaker (but this is normal at least). I think HTC devices have gone downhill these days. I came to the TP from a Universal which I've used for over 2.5 years! And it still has better sound quality etc. Shame Expansys are messing me around too. Still no response from them...

third device seems ok
Just got my third device, and it seems to be ok. But I'll have to make some calls before I know for sure.

The speaker on my fuze doesn't really work unless I sometimes tap it lightly, and even then it crackles. it started happening suddenly a few days ago. its really annoying because I can't hear incoming calls anymore, and the speakerphone feature doesn't work either. I'm using NATF's 3.4 ROM, and have been since it came out, but this only started suddenly. I've noticed a small "popping" noise ever time I get an incoming text/call/ or some type of incoming signal.
I think its obvious that this is a hardware problem. If I remember correctly, I think HTC devices come with a 1 year manufactuer's warrenty. Maybe I can make use of it?
Would I also have to unflash the phone and bring it to factory settings?
bump? can someone please give me some advice?
same problem...
speaker
Same problem, speaker stops working then works.
same problem, Mine finally went out all together, and I can only hear it when my ear is RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPEAKER....its very low...I need to go ahead and try to get a warranty replacement.
I suggest contacting ATT ASAP. even if you didn't purchase a replacement plan, HTC provides a warrenty for a certain amount of days. As long as your phone isn't otherwise damaged you can send it back
I did it, and got a newphone in about 4 days (though you can get expedited shipping for $12)
Hello all:
I am on my first replacement phone, and am experiencing a recurring problem that I also had on my original phone. At times during the call, the person on the other end will not be able to hear me (a la 'mute'), but I can hear them. I have confirmed that the mute function is not activated (even turned it on then off), but no luck. My initial impression was just a faulty microphone/hardware, but given that my second phone is also experiencing then same problem, I wonder if it is something that I am doing. I can assure you that I am not in any way blocking the microphone hole at the bottom of the phone (experimented with that to see if it was the cause). I can also rule out network issues due to moving between cells - I have experienced this problem driving and sitting still at my desk.
This problem, more than the GPS issue, will be the deal breaker for me - this is a business phone and I spend a substantial amount of time every day on work related calls.
Thanks in advance.
Thomas
I have the same issue. My coworker had the same issue with his the replacement under warranty.
If I use the headset it works fine. If I mute the phone and un-mute it it starts working.
Something is fishy with the microphone of this model ...
Okay, now this is getting ridiculous. Either I have really bad luck, or I am doing something wrong. On my second replacement phone, and like the last two, I have problems with the microphone cutting out during the middle of calls. Am I completely alone, or am I just lucky in getting phones with bad mics?
I keep the phone in my pocket with a body glove case. The mic is not plugged up, and it seems random. Could there be a software issue (ie a piece of software interfering and taking over the soundstream from the mic)? Even though the person on the far end cannot hear me, I can hear them.
Thanks
T
@ banesong: I'm having similar issues. I've had my phone for a little more than 24 hours. last night i couldn't hear anything coming from my mic and obviously could not communicate from my end. taking the battery out and back in fixed it for me. but i look at this as only a temporary solution. hopefully this isn't a hardware issue
I am having the same issue. I've had my Captivate since the end of July and it is running stock 2.1 that came with it and unrooted. I can't remember when the issue first started. But it has been doing it a lot more lately. It seems to happen around 8 or 9 minutes after I am on the phone call. At first I would hang up and just call back. Then I discovered that the mic would start working again if I just turned the speakerphone on and then off again.
It is really starting to get annoying now. I am thinking about getting a warranty replacement. The only reason why I didn't get a warranty replacement sooner is because I don't feel like having to remember and reinstall all the apps that I have on my phone now.
Having the same issue here and I have an idea about the problem.
If you remove the lid on the back that covers the battery the microphone is disabled and no warning appears on the screen. This is the same behaviour we are all experiencing.
There are two round blank spots on the inside of the cover matching two contacts on the phone. My idea is that the 'lid open' detection checks if the lid connects these two contacts.
My microphone usually starts working when I squeeze the phone.
Not sure about a workaround yet but connecting the two connectors directly inside the phone should solve it permanently (but voids the warranty).
Hope that helps.

Sorry, please ignore my previous message. I couldn't reproduce it yesterday so it must have been coincidence.
However, I have the same microphone problem and would like to know if there is a fix for it.
Cheers

Possible fix
I know this is an old thread but I have one of these old phones and was having this problem. After fiddling with the settings a bit I found a setting under Call Settings->Voice Call->Noise suppression. I unchecked the box and the mic seems to be working - for now.
The earpiece stopped working the other day out of nowhere... I have not dropped the phone, or gotten it wet at all (not that it should matter!) but it no longer plays sound out of the earpiece... Anyone else experiencing this issue? It makes it extremely difficult to be on the phone since I usually talk with the phone to my ear. I have made sure that the call volume was all the way up, so it doesn't seem like a volume issue either.
Any troubleshooting advice, other than making calls and seeing if it starts working?
Same problem with earpiece not working
Did you find a solution to this problem. I've just purchased the S7 and have discovered earpiece not working. Speaker works but not the earpiece nor headphone jack. Probably going to return under warranty but would be helpful if a known solution!
Hi,
did you find out what to do or is it just to send it to a technician?
mine is three days old and doesn't work from day one ...
Sorry for delay. No I didnt find a solution. I took it back to Samsung and they exchanged the handset under warranty. Goodluck.
