no firmware, communication failed - how to download/install AT&T updates? - General Questions and Answers

ok. so my samsung captivate is unlocked and currently outside of the US. i too was having the notorious GPS problems and so was delighted to hear that AT&T had released an update to fix this issue. however, when i tried to reach the AT&T server via my phone to do a "software update" i got the following messages: "no firmware" and on clicking resume update, i got: "communication failed".
i'm not too good with all the nitty gritty technical stuff, but if someone could please explain for me where i can download the latest updates online, and how to install them (i'm sure this will be very technical), id really appreciate your help!

Blackberry Connect on Motorola MPX-220

I know this thing is old, but I manged to track down the BBC Software for it. (BBConnect_Motorola_Smartphone_BB_English_2_1_.0.1.39-41.cab It installed fine, and looked to be ok. I told it to register and I got a message telling me it was successfull. When connected to my work PC I was able to synch with Activesync, and I got Policy from our BES. All looked well until I wasn't getting OTA syncs. I went to https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular and tried to change to the new hardware (PIN, and IMEI both show up on the device). When I try to make the switch I get: "The Information you have provided could not be verified. Please re-type your information and try again".
On the MPX-220 if I try to register the device now I get: "Network Available", "Data Tunnel Available", then "Not Connected", which is pretty much where I'm stuck.
I called RIM, and AT&T who connected me back to RIM. All I get from them is that the MPX-220 is not supported by my carrier, and they can't offer me any assistance. Then the AT&T tech told me that Blackberry Connect shouldn't work on my 8525, and that it was a fluke. I know this is so close to working, hopefully somebody here has seen this and can offer some assistance?

[Q] Final attempt... wp7 error 80070017

I don't know if I posted this in the right place, but its a last ditch plea for help.
I've been trying to get my Samsung Focus updated to Tango, specifically to resolve the stupid keyboard bug. I'm on AT&T and they're not giving me anything past 7720. So I used windowbreak, and loaded wp7 root tools, and changed my carrier to Rogers.
This allowed me to pick up 7740, which installed fine.
It then prompted me to install 8107, and during step 7 - while installing, it would suddenly cut to step 1 of 2, "restarting your phone". After restarting it would tell me that error 80070017 had occurred.
I've searched and searched and searched, and none of the solutions I've seen work (most of which are from last year in attempts to install 7720). There are a ton of Nokia users also getting this error trying to get to 8773 recently, and nothing to help them.
Maybe someone here has seen and gotten around this.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] How do I suppress firmware updates?

I got a notification on my phone that there is a software update available for my phone. After reading up on it a bit, I decided it's not worth the hassle to update. I thought I had gone through steps to suppress firmware updates a while back but I guess not. What's the easiest way to suppress this warning? Let me know when you get the chance. Thanks, guys!
Well, a bit of an update, I found the original information on how to suppress OTA updates here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56693607&postcount=370
As I thought before, I had already gone through this step and disabled it (it was disabled in the hidden menu already). However, the update still seems to have popped up. t tried to auto update this morning but reported back that it suspects my system is rooted so it wasn't able to install. That's good news to a point (at least it didn't screw anything up) but I don't like that it even attempted it without me giving it permission.
Any idea what might have changed? Or is there a difference between an OTA update and a "software update"?
I don't know the answer but I am having the same problem. My phone keeps restarting and giving the error that it wasn't able to install. This actually happened before when I was on 4.X and eventually it bricked my phone and the AT&T store couldn't fix it so they gave me a refurb. It sucked because I didn't have all my photos backed up(I have since fixed that problem.) Now I am having the same issue and I don't want it to brick my phone. I also hate that it restarts automatically...I might need to use my phone for something at the moment. I also have tried the info in the link to disable OTA both phones and neither time has it worked. If anyone can help, please do. Thanks.
The only thing I have ever done and has worked every time is to root and then freeze a file called. "software update" or "update manager". Hope this helps.
I would actually like someone to put together an update.zip that will update us to the latest version without having to go through the hassle of flashing back to stock and what not.
I like the idea of LTE voice calls but not so much that I am willing to go through the work of starting over.
sent from a location using an app
In Titanium Backup (or similar app) find the app call "Software Update 2.3.3.1" and freeze it
That is what solved me receiving software updates and I no longer see the option in the About phone area.

Help! Is my new handset dead / hacked?

Hi folks.
I've just got a new, second hand s7 from a CEX store here in the U.K.
However when it boots up it keeps saying the the logging service has failed (like every couple of mins) and I've also noticed on a reboot it will forget it's been connected to wifi.
Knox keeps saying it's detected unauthorised activity.
There is a firmware update available but it fails during install.
I've tried using smart swap to install the update but it gets stuck at 0% and then looses connection with the handset.
I'm currently downloading firmware to try and install with Odin. But I have to admit if that fails I'm kind of out of my depth.
Any ideas?
I guess I can try and return it to the store but I have no idea what the returns policy is like.
Many thanks
Jason
I would try and return it mate

HELP: "Not on Registered Network" while trying to place calls after recent update

HELP: "Not on Registered Network" while trying to place calls after recent update
Hi all, yeah I'm getting this error now after recent update, any help greatly appreciated.
Factory ROM
Unlocked S7, formerly ATT&T
Edit:
I should mention that I've already done steps 1-7 here:
(can't post links yet)
Turn off and remove and re-insert sim card.
Attempt to manually connect to all scanned networks, one by one
Reset Network Settings
Start phone in Safe Mode
Nothing works, and I can't contact my carrier, SafetyNet Wireless, because I have no means of placing a call (I used to be able to use Google Hangouts if I found myself in a situation like this)
I'm really upset about this and have turned off auto-downloading of Software Updates.
How an update could break my phone's primary functionality is completely beyond me. God damn there's some real idiots working for Samsung at the moment.
