What happens if you select 'Recovery'? Do you actually get a recovery mode?

Dunno, but i tried it and I think its wiping my phone lol..
Ive got a phone icon with a ! in it
I think that is recovery mode

Great job! Thanks for experimenting with this

Ahh, isn't that what the Desire used to do? I'm fairly sure it is. Paul O'Brien then figured what file to push and it would load into a decent bootloader. I guess this will be possible at some point again then...
I think your data is safe. I 'think' (but don't know for sure...) pull the battery and boot and you should be fine.

Yup, same as desire. Hold the volume up for 3 secs then tap the power allows for a custom recovery via update.zip? Clockwork time

You mean volume up and power button.
I'm not sure if clockwork works trough this recovery tho, adb should have root access I guess.
edit: a friend of mine had a HD, lets see if we can brick it. But first research what others already know about the G2 and what this eMMC is...

Ummm just gave me

does G2 do all this already? just wondering if this is a clue whether this is way around NAND lock on desire HD that may not be available on g2

Find a full RUU of 0.06 test, 1.01 test or 1.04 test.

With a S-OFF we can full root the phone? Just a noob question, trying to understand what lock HD have... also all HDs come with that? i have read that just T-Mobile have this.

You think S-ON bootloader would allow flashing test and older versions of ROMs?

No but mayb edit it so we can flash the s-off bootloader like the Desire

You can open up the Device and check it yourself. But if you don't know what your doing I would not reccomend it. Best bet is if you have T.E.P. is to take it in, and let Sprint look at it. Just make sure you RUU back to stock, before you take it in.
How can I RUU back to stock with no volume down button to access the boot menu?

You can put the RUU Exe. on your PC. Hook the device via USB cable, and run the RUU form the PC.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971550
I would run 2.2 RUU which is available here:
http://www.multiupload.com/15N2D30H6C
Also, take it in to the sprint store and try to have it repaired before you go through TEP, if you don't have TEP, get it.
That is the link to the 2.2 , .93 HBOOT RUU . Would never tell anyone to RUU back to 2.3. Makes no Sense .

[Q] no bootloader, s-off, root under android 4.1.1

Hello,
I bought me a used evo shift 4g with android 4.1.1. Is there a possibility, to get s-off or root? I can't even get into bootloader (volume down and power). I already tried different methods, but nothing seems to work. Can anybody help me please?

Yes you can get s-off, look in the development section, there is a one click root. Since you have 4.1 on there I am guessing you are S-ON rooted?

If you can't get into bootloader, try enabling usb debugging ( Settings > Development), then connect your phone to your computer and download the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) from HERE
Open a command window in the place where you extracted the adb files and type "adb devices"
If your device is not recognized, download and install the drivers from HERE
After that, try "adb devices" again, if something like "HT8472JW76 device" shows up, then that's good
Now type "adb reboot-bootloader" and see if that gets you into bootloader
This is kind of a lot of work, but it definitely helps in the long run. Also, I would not run my utility until you have downgraded to 2.2 by running an RUU (all of them can be found HERE, 2.2 is the one that has the number "1.17.651") or by flashing a PG06IMG.zip through bootloader. The utility checks what version you are using, and if its anything other than 2.2 or 2.3.4 it throws an error, so just downgrade to 2.2 directly and then use the utility.
If you have any questions or if anything does not make sense, don't be afraid to ask

Do you have superuser installed? Or ROM Manager? You're problem is strange. Check out ROM Manager after you install superuser and see if it will let you install a recovery... I have never had S-On root I just know it's out there and you have to have some kind of root because you are not on stock. I am S-Off and most of the people on here are, so root that baby and get to flashing.

well, I know these things from my wildfire. I have installed superuser and also ROM manager but can'tget superuser permissions or install a recovery. But when I start the phone, there is not the original HTC-screen, but a custom-screen. So I agree with you, that I am not on stock - some kind of very strange. It seems to me, that all the root-tools only work with 2.3.x, so if i could downgrade, that might help as well.

The shift was shipped with 2.2 and 2.3.x so if you have anything other then that it was rooted to get to where you are. How you lost root is beyond any of us. And maybe beyond the guy that sold it to you. Pull the battery and place it back in hold volume down and power, that should be a sure shot at getting to bootloader, then take a picture and post that

Like strapped365 said, this is definitely a weird situation and I've never come across it myself. The best option would probably be to just run a 2.2 RUU and root from there. You can also check for root by downloading "root checker" from the play store, its by joeykrim (the free version will work fine)

Check what was quoted.... Did I say that? no I did not, i said it don't just disappear. And before that I said the guy that sold it to him would know what was wrong.
Now if you delete your bootloader that's on you, and if you did it and didn't tell anyone then sold said phone, you would be the only one who could help someone in that situation. After you hangout here more you will notice a redundancy of posts because 90% of rooted users don't even deserve to have a smartphone let alone a rooted one, so they never know what their talking about so we try to push the core troubleshooting methods to get them to where they need to go. It's like calling sprint what's their first step? Factory data reset to give you a level playing field, here I just told the guy how to get into bootloader if there was a fastboot checked. Also I've seen so many users get the version of Sense mixed up with the version of Android so again we fall back to the core known methods of solving a problem. I've been with the shift since release so I've seen every failed ota by HTC and every moronic thing that can be done with this phone. But no matter how I told him to get somewhere all you new guys just take over like no oldies but goodies know......btw if bootloader is missing adb reboot bootloader wouldn't work either right? So again with the redundant instructions to get the the same place

You haven't clarified whether it was a ROM or RUU, where you got the file, or whether your phone was shipped with Gingerbread. That is important information. I think at this point I'm going to assume you flashed a Froyo RUU on a phone shipped with Gingerbread.

It was new a year ago? Yeah, you flashed a Froyo RUU on a phone shipped with GB. That messes your bootloader. glevitan has a guide that has, among other things, instructions on how to fix that, but given that AAHK has been retired I don't know if the files to fix it are still available.

AAHK is retired. The server hosting the files it pulls from may very well be gone. And it's not AAHK itself that will fix it anyway; it's just instructions by AAHK's author using files hosted on AAHK's site. It's not included in the AAHK itself.
AAHK has a ton of very clear warnings saying NOT to flash a Froyo RUU on a phone shipped with GB. I would strongly advise that you read more closely next time. You will need to wait for glevitan to show up and see if he can help.

Hey guys,
After days of googling on how to fix my problem i finally found this awesome site here.
The problem is that i cant flash my device with the command :"fastboot flash boot boot.img" because i cant get into my normal android os
All i reach is the hboot menu and from there my pc wont recognize my device as device...
Did you guys had something similar already or a solution to install android firmware manually?
regards
You need to be in your fastboot setting. Power down with the volume down key held and power back up the same way. Navigate and click fastboot and make sure the red box says fastboot usb

You may need to download HTC Sync Manager from the HTC site and install it so that the drivers for the phone are available in your system.
need more information on your device:
what did you do up to the point where it stopped working.
Is your phone recognized by your computer when plugged in, adb devices.
hboot version?
do you have TWRP or CWM recovery on the phone and can you boot to that as well as the bootloader, hboot menu, is what you called it
Also you are on the dual core version not the tegra 3 model, if you have the tegra 3 wrong forum

is this a joke? why would you need to flash boot.img if you don't even know what any of this stuff is? if you encrypted your phone and it went bad, flashing boot.img wouldn't help a thing. sounds like a lame april fools joke.
how did you encrypt it, i think I've seen the option somewhere but i don't remember where it was.
were you rooted or stock before the encryption
do you have the latest htc sync manger installed
Hboot will be displayed on your bootloader, power button + volume down until soft buttons stop blinking then let go of the power button until but continue to hold volume down to boot into the bootloader
TWRP & CWM are recovery software used to flash custom roms and other mods

[Q] Installing BLACKOUT SENSE 3.6 on Inspire 4G S-On with Broken volume buttons

Hi!
I've been readin and searching for quite some time now and can't seem to find an answer for my question.
Here's the deal, I have an Inspire 4G on which I want to install the BLACKOUT 4.0 with SENSE 3.6 rom, my phone is S-On and I can't do S-Off because of broken volume buttons, I already managed to install 4EXT Touch recovery, so I can flash de rom's zip file, but, since I have S-on, I know I need to flash the boot.img file via fastboot, I've put the phone into fastboot via adb command, but the thing is I don't see any boot.img file inside the rom's zip, I found some boot.img inside the Kernels folder, but there's no "Inspire" folder in there.
I hope somebody can help me with, I only need to know where to find the BLACKOUT'S boot.img for my inspire 4G, or can I use any other boot.img inside the Kernels folder?
Please help.
Thank you.
Keep it up!!!...

Hello again, any luck finding it?, maybe I should just install another sense rom, but as long as I've seen this is one of the best and everything I use is working flawlessly, but guess I'll have to sacrifice some features in order to get the HTC SENSE back. :crying:
Anyways, thank you for your help.

Sry! Just forgot it. There are 6 folders conatining kernels (boot.img) One folder is named as HTC's "codename" for your device. Thats the right boot.img. The rom is compatible do different devices, thats why it contains 6 different kernel images

Yes I know that, but there are only 6 folders named: Ace, Glacier, Incs, Saga, Vision and Vivo, there's no Inspire folder, or should I use the Incs one?, I'm sorry, that's why I'm so confused, the thing is, I can't post this matter directly to main thread for this rom, cause I still have no permit to do so.
Well, thank you for all of your help.

Ok, I'm more confused now, I thought that "HTC Ace" was actually the HTC Desire HD not Inspire 4G, or am I wrong? I'm sorry, I just don't want to brick my pone.

Ok, so, you're basically telling me to flash the kernel for the Desire to my Inspire, I know they're almost the same, but I've read that some roms are not compatible with Inspire unless there's a patch for it or something, I'll try it, I'm still not feeling so sure about this but I'll try it, I'll post back when I'm done.
If I can ever post back, lol...

You CAN'T really brick tzhe device as its S-ON. Worst case was that you had to flash the stock firmware / anothr rom again. The kernel will not affect your recovery. If you downloaded the rom for a "Inspire 4g" it WILL be compatible lol

I'm having a hard time trying to get into bootloader/fastboot mode, and once in bootloader I can't select anything, so I just don't want to start and then find out I can't continue because I don't have no volume buttons, I have never done it before, but I remember when I rooted my inspire I had to select something, and in that case, the volume buttons were needed yes or yes, so I just don't want to start and then having to revert everything back to stock or bricking the phone, and by bricking I mean, that it might keep just rebooting and since I don't have volume buttons I won't then be able to get it out of the loop cicle.
Or you don't really need to volume buttons in order to S-Off?

For using Firewater S-OFF or Rumrunner S-OFF you don't need the volume buttons. IDK if it supports your device. Let me check compatiblity
You can try RumRunner. If its not compatible you won't face any changes on your device
