[KERNEL] Phoenix v1.49 (11/04/2010) - Epic 4G Android Development

No longer being maintained or supported.
Thanks for all the positive feedback, and thanks to the other devs that made Phoenix possible.

This is awesome. I have been following you on Twitter and github for like ever....just patiently waiting

Oh, nice. Trying this out right now.

Great work tehdarkknight! Looking good.

I've identified a scaling issue with the interactive governor. It idles at 800 mHz and doesn't clock up or down. I'll be releasing a minor version soon with a different default governor until I can find a permanent solution.
As for the benchmarks, even when interactive is working properly, you won't get amazing benchmarks, but your device will be more responsive and have better battery life. Typical benchmarks for this kernel so far with, say, the performance governor are an 8.2 linpack and 950 quadrant. Once interactive is scaling properly, those scores won't mean anything.

v1.32 is re-uploaded and working, sorry for any confusion.
If you've downloaded v1.32, please discard it immediately. something failed in the upload and it causes a boot failure.

Sweet, time to fork and do a proper patch for BFS.

I know you care about performance and tweaking the kendal a much as potable but can you add the brightness tweak cause the phone is stupid bright at 0
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

Great to see this! I'll be borrowing some stuff for MixUp
In particular the interactive governor, I added it yesterday but ran into problems getting it to compile, so this is uber-handy!

v1.40 is up, added 600 and 1200 as possible frequencies.
By just setting the scaling governor to performance and locking the frequency at 1200, I managed 1010 in Quadrant and 9.75 in Linpack.

thanks man.. sounds like a great kernel! I will probably flash whatever is the latest release tonight.. i'll let you know how it goes and how it performs compared to other kernels.. I've been testing a few of them lately..

So is this kernel rooted bro?

Any plans to incorporate voodoo color?

I am testing this now, praying the BFS scheduler finally gives me a lag free CM7 experience. Is the minmax governor a better performer than smartass?
I prefer x99's smartass, I think he just tweaked it recently on his github. I think minmax is a older govenor. I also get better battery life with the smartass
I just added minmax for testing purposes and to have more governor options
Thanks for the update will test over the weekend.

Nice, well I tested it to the max for a whole day using gps navigation, wifi, 4g, pretty much everything lol. Data connection also seems better as well.
Soo far everything is working good. My wifi works perfect which I couldn't get to work with x99's kernel no matter how I tried flashing it including a full wipe.
What speed does this kernel boot at? Is there any way you can implement any of Scary's goodies into your kernel? I liked that his let's you do 184 min. Also any way to go higher than 1.5 ghz as I like using 1.8 at times. What is the sleep max on say ondemand etc. Anyway your gonna do undervolting?
Anyway thanks for the kernel and the hard work!

yes as soon as my team member get's back from vaction we'll be working on things like that. So the kernel can be worked on more
I basicly pushed this kernel out as soon as I had it working perfectly
After an hour or so of testing I have experienced no launcher or messenger app lag, whatever you did here its working for me.. I wonder if its the BFS? Do you know if bcnice aosp kernel used this too? His kernel is the only other like this that performed so well..

yes I do think it's bfs. I noticed how well the animations and graphics are so smooth. If I went back to none bfs I don't think I'd like it haha
Not sure about bcnice has it
Don't install this kernel version over the latest nightly, some things like wifi seem to not be working. I'll work on a updated version as I really want to stay up-to-date haha
Updated kernel but I have to remove bfs due to compatibility issues
Soo far everything is running great. I have no issues running 1.8ghz at all if I'm using ondemand governor.
How much did you undervolt? Meaning is it kinda like scary's or more like Bc's or X99's.
Thanks for making a great kernel. Everything works for me perfect.
1 request... Can you add 184mhz like Scary had? My phone saves lots of battery when I use it.

This kernel is nice and fast on Shift Deck ROM but it seems to be a little rough on my battery. I've only been using it for about 4 hours, so maybe with some tweaking I can get it back up to par. Really enjoying the speed though.. Appreciate the great work.

Most of the changes in the nighties you are not going to notice a whole lot. The biggest changes are changes in the kernel. This kernel was built of the latest nightly kernel just a couple of days ago so it should be compatible with all the nightlies unless they mess with the kernel some more. But cyanogen just tweeted that we will have a rc soon So I'd just wait until then. Also I'm going to take a look at the stock ota update and see if I can hack the kernel and rom for us to intall without the latest hboot

SetCPU supports Tegra 2 (V2.2.0)

SetCPU master coolbho3000 has updated his app to include support for the Tegra 2. It's available at all the familiar places.
2.2.0 - Added an "In Call" profile. Improved the Set on Boot safemode function by including a flashable zip that toggles SetCPU's safemode. Press menu on the main tab for more details. Added autodetect support for all Tegra 2 fakeShmoo kernels (ie. G2x). Added a "Voltage" tab for undervolting the CPU on fakeShmoo kernels, some custom Galaxy S kernels, and some Nexus S kernels. This is a full-fledged interface for undervolting these devices, and includes backing up and restoring and a Set on Boot checkbox. Improved the way SetCPU initially requests root. Various miscellaneous bugfixes.
Undervolting in SetCPU, now that's fantastic. By far the best purchase I've made on the market.

Also has a cool feature that allows you to extract a zip file to your sdcard in case you've set it to 1.5/1.5 and your phone freaks out. You can just boot into recovery, flash the zip and it resets setcpu.
I must say, SetCPU 2.20 is quite amazing... worth every penny
Note to ppl who upgraded from existing setcpu...re-detect your cpu speeds from the main screen. Otherwise, voltage tab will force close on you.

I have 400/400 for screen off. I set in call to slightly higher at 400/500.
I'll need to test it tomorrow during calls and see if the screen wakes up quicker after a call ends.
For benching, I set it at 1500/1500 at 1300mV with no profile set for maximum power, and I'm getting much lower benchmarks in Smartbench 2011, than I was with pimpmycpu. Why do you think that would be?

I did the same, but unfroze SETCPU and FROZE pimpmycpu.
In the transition, the battery got drained quite a bit over a few minutes, and heated up pretty fast when initially recharging. I had rebooted in between, but there may still have been some residual conflicts between the apps.
It froze at one point, but after a battery pull, it settled down. Overnight battery drain (with screen-off profile set pretty low) was only 4% over 8 hours. This is on EB 1.0.2 and faux stock kernel. Quadrent "only" around 4000, but everything works and this has apparently improved battery life.
A note on pimpmycpu - I thought scaling to min had stuck, but apparently not. Battery consumption was 12-15 % overnight compared to the above.
Thanks OP! I severely dislike pimpmycpu...

I have not seen that, although compared to Quadrent, I had not seen the very high scores that some had. I doubt SETCPU would impact you OC'd performance at max setting (although pimp had scheduler settings and SETCPU does not).

SGX 540

I have a Droid X, a Droid Charge and my brother has an incredible 2. We both have chainfire installed and for some reason verysingle game plays many times smoother on the htc with the adreno 205 than on my charge with the sgx 540? any reason for that? even the games that are coded for tegra devices run on his so much smoother. i tried a game called falling fred, lags some on my charge, runs super smooth on the inc2, i have a galaxy tab 10.1 also runs super realy nice on that, and on my droid x it runs about the same as the charge. there is nothing wrong with my charge because ive played with 3 or 4 of them and they are all the same way. Any solutions?

I agree with cold... Go for some lagfix
Charged up post!
i have voodoo lagfix courtesy of peanutbutta jelly time i really need a way to fix it
The SGX540 in these Samsung devices are underclocked severely. They are more capable but they can stand quite a bit of overclocking. Some devices come with the same gpu clocked at 385Mhz instead of 200Mhz.
The lag fix is ok but once we get a CM7 build it will look sloooooow. Been there done that.

I think I would rather see CM7 implementation if for no other reason than their dedication to constant updates. And they are all pretty much the same mtd based thing. OMGB shouldn't be any faster than CM7 and it lacks features.
Just my experience from the fascinate. Omgb and omfgb *seemed* smoother, not that cm7 was slow. And they pump out updates for their roms pretty regularly. If you don't think they're dedicated, then you don't know t3hh4xx0r.

Yeah, I could never overclock my Fascinate much before MTD. I was pulling 3000 quadrant scores at 1.4Ghz with a 233Mhz GPU clock speed i believe on the Glitch ML kernel and it actually run a good 8-10 hours that way to boot.
i refuse to have a phone that runs at less than its capabitlities. we need that gpu overclock! any devs can port it?

Then do something about it yourself. Glitch is an aosp kernel so porting isn't really an option until we have aosp roms to make use of it so that's quite a ways away. A gpu overclock may be possible on tw but I haven't ever heard of it being done and the devs capable of working on it probably have enough on their plate as it is. But who knows, maybe someone will pick it up I guess we'll see.

[Q] Have you managed to OC to 1460MHZ and keep stability?

I'm using AOSP+ ICS ROM with the latest Matr1x kernel. Whenever I try to OC to 1460 the phone freezes and I have to pull the battery, so I'm forced to run at a maximum of 1300MHz.
Also, on a related matter, is it good practice to use SetCPU with various profiles (battery<, temp>, screenoff, charging) for various frequencies? Or should I just use AOSP+ tweaks to chose a min and max frequency and let it be?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these.

If you are using deep idle you shouldn't underclock since it causes a race-to-idle condition. In other words your battery will drain faster. If you don't use deep idle, feel free to underclock when the screen is off or whatever you want.

Just an update, Using CNA 1.4.0 and Matr1x v17, I am stable oc'ed to 1460.
this is what I am running
1)800/1460
2)gov =Ondemand
3)Scheduler =Noop
4)all voltages to +30 (used the cna rom's voltage tweaker)
I tried ShadowGun: the Leftover.. and It was flying. Of course, make sure that have enough battery or that you have a charger ready. But finally it works, try this and let me know
I can run it for 10-20 min of usage then get a freeze. I never raised the voltages before though. It seems like its working for other people. And the actual developer of Matrix Kernel is telling you to ....
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Build 25)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy 7)

It still amazes me how so many people that ask about overclocking have no frigging idea at all how cpus/gpus in general are binned etc.
I have a question. Why do you guys overclock that much? It might be snappy but battery life is just bad and it just doesn't worth it in my opinion.

Personally, I do it because I can. Seriously... I'm a geek, I love gadgets and tech and I like to tinker.
On the subject at hand, I'm still unable to OC to 1460 (ARM voltages +30, INT voltages +25) but at 1300 it runs fine, no issues whatsoever.
i can run 1460 stable all day. bigxie/matrix. just did +30 to all the voltages above 1000. deadline and lulzactive..
If you are a geek you would know about something as simple as binning chips. Do what a tech geek would do...look it up. Same thing the op should have done with his ?. Hell mathkid has a answer to his ? In the op of his kernel thread. Which is the kernel he is running

Sent from my PG06100 using XDA
Well there are a lot of variables. Also, weather you want to lean towards performance, battery life. I'd say a good starting point is the default settings on MikRunny. 245mHz Min and 1.2gHz ( 1200mHz ) Max. Interactive and Ondemand are both good choices. Just bump it up a little at a time if you want a little more performance. Also, on MikRunny you have the option of setting the Battery Performance Levels to.
