2.1 Samsung keyboard on 2.2 - Captivate General

Is there anyway to get the stock 2.1 Samsung (not android) keyboard on 2.2? My friend really doesn't like the changes and wants the old one. I'm trying to help him out

Not that I know of. The Samsung keyboard is built into the phone. If you wanted to reverse engineer it then it would be possible.

(I haven't tried this before so there are no guarantees) On my Cog 2.2 b5.5, in the Titanium Back Up, there is a "Samsung keypad 2.2". Could you maybe go back to 2.1*, root, then install TB, back up the "Samsung keypad 2.1" (assuming that it's possible) then get back to 2.2 and restore it?
*or find someone who has 2.1 and can back up the "Samsung keypad 2.1" and give you the 3 files necessary to restore it.
I'm not sure if this will work, but in theory, it sure looks good.

Allow me to point you in the direction of my thread, with almost the same thread title, that you would have found had you searched.

If you read my OP, I'm looking to put the samsung keyboard from 2.1 on 2.2... NOT the ANDROID keyboard. I specifically said this.

Is there anything that's different?
I couldn't tell anything that changed.
Except for things like the text selection, which happens regardless of keyboard.

You wont be able to install the older 2.1 version on 2.2 through backup. I don't think it should be that big of a deal. Tell your friend to try out swype it's much better anyway.

GalaxyJeff has an excellent point.

I too am looking for the Samsung Keyboard included in 2.1
While I like the new one, the old one did have more symbols.
One symbol in particular that I miss was the circle that had the tips of the letter "x" coming out on each side. No other keyboard I've seen has this symbol.
I really hope someone knows of a way to get older keyboards. I'd like to have both honestly.

One Click De-Cripple released for Captivate to enable install of Non-Market Apps

I have developed One Click De-cripple to enable installation of non-market on the Captivate with one click. While many of you may be saying that Android Central's Sideload Wonder Machine already does this, my program will make a persistent change to enable non-market app installation without being attached to a computer. OCD was developed in Visual Studio 2010, therefore prerequisites will be that the USB drivers already be installed, that .NET 4.0 be installed, and the phone is already rooted. If you have not yet rooted your phone, I recommend "Samsung Galaxy S One Click Root" by TGA_Gunnman.
v1.0.0.2.
Changes:
Added PayPal Donate button. If you like my program, please donate to help finance my further development for the Captivate.
I already have non market apps enabled on my captivate via clshortfuses one click. Is this something different?thanks

Wow... don't know how I missed that one. I'm sure my project is using a similar mechanism but is geared specifically for the Captivate and at this time requires that the phone already be rooted.
I used his program to root and allow non market apps yesterday. Worked great for me but alot of people had problems. So go for it maybe yours will be good for those people.

DB edit through shell isn't that difficult. and YES... another one. Apparently some people have been experiencing issues with rageagainstthecage which is what SuperOneClick relies on. OCD does not rely on this mechanism and is designed for your average person with little or no *nix, coding, or CLI skills to free their phone. Gripe all you want but I'm sure someone will find it useful.
And without further ado...
A big thank you. It worked where others failed. Totally worth it!
Does this work on Eclair, Froyo or both?
I'm already rooted and have OCLF installed but I assume that doesn't matter, right?

It wasn't a gripe, just an observation. Maybe a better alternative is for a campaign to get AT&T to uncripple the platform.
Anyway, good deal helping those that need it.

OCD was designed and tested for 2.1 Eclair but will likely work on 2.2 Froyo. My understanding is that the manual process to enable non-market apps on 2.2 is identical to 2.1. If you are running 2.2 and have tried OCD, please share your experience.

OCD should work with OCLF but has not been tested with it. OCD requires that the phone already be rooted so you are already half-way there.
Thanks dude, good work. I was tired of doing all that adb stuff !
it works
Worked like a charm....
finally got non market on my 2.2
I launch it and I get the black "Galaxy S" box but can't see anything in it but the half outline of two buttons. If the buttons have text, I can't read it.
Rooted w/ drivers installed. XP Pro SP3

No HTC Keyboard

It looks like my HTC keyboard is gone? I am using a very basic, I would think stock looking keyboard. How do I get the polished one back?
I use Smart Keyboard Pro and I use the white HTC keyboard. Well that one or the Samsung Galaxy S one (I loved it on my Vibrant). It also has the Android standard grey(ish) tint keyboard and iPhone as the 4 standard keyboards. you might want to check it out
*edit* oh I misunderstood your post I think. So are you talking about the Touch Input keyboard that comes installed already is missing??? That's the only polished one on there besides the Swype that comes standard. That dragon diction one is vile lol. If you lost one of the preinstalled keyboards I don't know what to say, sorry. I hope it gets resolved for you!
did a backup with titanium.. just found it. i can push it back on there now. good thing i backed up
Nope never mind. Can't get it back. Its htc touch input 2.0 or something. I can't get it back now. guess i'll never know until i can unroot and exchange device.
can anyone send me a link for the htc_ime that comes with the phone so i can get my keyboard back? apparently i didn't back up this file

I dont have the phone yet, just ordered it last night, but someone should be able to just adb pull it from their phone.
Edit: This isn't from the phone itself, but its working on my vibrant. Might work for you.
Just adb push /system/app
then reboot and it should be installed.
I just got mine today and I am hoping root (one click method) is made soon, I cant get adb on my machine.. but anways I too want my htc im keyboard back. I have used the link theinetnot posted, but I am not sure which version I am supposed to chose. Anyone know?

[Q] Swype?

Hi all,
New to the Android scene. I have an iPhone3gs and am leaning towards the Inspire over the Atrix. Quick noob question. Can Swype be installed on this device?
Yes but
Unless you are rooted (which at least for now looks semi-difficult), you need to sideload it. I haven't had enough posts yet to post an outside link, but you can Google "install swype inspire" and the first hit should get you started.

easiest guide you'll find. Literally took me 5 minutes, and I've never run commands on a computer. Hardest thing was to find a torrent for WinZip lol
@antioch216: Thanks. That was the link I wanted to post!
It's very easy. Didn't take me all that long either. I used the Mac/Linux method and it was easy breezy.
Thanks for the link. One other question. What are your thoughts on Swype vs the stock keyboard? I've never actually used it myself but have heard lots of hype surrounding it.
Thanks!
Swype is really awesome I think. It's really easy to get used to. In my experience you only have to use one finger and it's pretty forgiving in terms of the letters you hit.

Swype is much faster for me once I got used to it.... except when it's messing up. Sometimes the autocorrect is just so bad that it would be faster to send the message in morse code, but that doesn't happen often.

nope, no root required. I haven't rooted and I just followed the guide and now I've got Swype!
AT&T blocks the ability to download from other sources (sideloading) and so this program is essentially a work around, but doesn't disturb any original settings. So if anything happened to your phone, AT&T wouldn't know unless the employee knew about this stuff.
Just follow the guide, and you'll have Swype, it's pretty easy

I believe every time you reset, you just have to change the input mode. It's just a default setting that isn't changeable to my knowledge. It happens to everyone
On my captivate, using Swype, when I pressed in the text area, I got a little button to move the cursor around. I get the same type little button with the default keyboard on my Inspire. With Swype, though, I get just a cursor, and I have to press and hold to magnify, more like an iphone. Is there any way to change that?

Swype - Any devs want to try to fix this?

I posted on Swype forums a while back about the issue with Swype on this phone. They replied saying the auto space (which im guessing auto capitalization falls in the same catagory) does not work because HTC has made sense reply window treat the data entered by the user as a web address link - because noone wants spaces in their links. I have found that most people say cracking HTC's Sense code is almost impossible but i was wondering if someone could come up with a fix for this.
Whats the problem? Swype seems to work fine for me...

Use the flex T9 that popped up. It's basically swipe made for sense.

If you use Handcent or ChompSMS it works. But yeah, definitely fails on the stock Sense message app.
Using the evo updated version of swype resolves all issues seen in the thunderbolt beta.
Using the evo version here. It just doesn't have the voice icon on the keyboard.

i'm using it now on the thunderbolt and it's autospacing
I've installed and uninstalled this a half dozen times because of similar issues.
Something else I've noticed sporadically is that even when I do get it working properly using Handcent SOMETIMES I have to still manually type. Meaning it makes a trace mark, but the letters never pop up.
Now going to look for the EVO swype.

Yep, EVO swype was the best one that I've found. The only thing I can't get it to do is put the auto punctuation in after you double space. Other than that it works great.
EDIT: What I can't figure out is if the EVO version is nearly perfect...why doesn't Swype just take it and revise it a little? Or, I guess maybe they tried and messed it up even worse?
OP: PM me your email address.

Those issues mentioned in this thread have been fixed for the most part in the March update. SWYPE BETA v2.10.52.13753

Shouldnt be too long for a full version Swype for Thunderbolt.

Better Keyboard disappeared?

Is it just me or has better keyboard disappeared off the market? I had to reflash generic UK and root/go back up to 2.3.3, but when I restored with Titanium Backup, I got the unlocker for Better Keyboard but not the app itself.
Now I'm stuck in an odd position where I can't find it on the market for whatever reason. Can anyone else check their market and see if they can see Better Keyboard?
I cant find it either, just a lot of other better keyboard add ons there. Might be worth emailing the dev and asking about it, if not see if there is a back up apk somewhere
Found it, I assume the dev changed name:

I really like Ultra keyboard, does so much and is so customisable but needs a bit of an update - also you have to disable it to use the dpad/touch pads which is very annoying, I love swype and I love swiftkey, I just want them to merge together that would be the best keyboard!

I have Ultra currently, I like it I just haven't worked out how to add a smiley key to it, and it mucks up my colons (puctuation mark - not bodily organ ) every time I try to do one. It is good though.
On a related note, I must be the only person on Earth who doesn't enjoy Swype/Swiftkey at all! Everyone seems to rave about it, yet I can't stand it!

Sorry to revive a year-old thread, but seeing as people who search for better keyboard will see this thread on google, the viable option for those still wanting to use it is to either install the Amazon store or find the better keyboard APK. Both can be found with a google search. "Better Keyboard APK" "Amazon app store APK" For those who dont know what an APK File is (Making this new-droid user friendly) you copy the APK file onto your device and select it with a file manager to install it.
