Cognition 2.2 - USB Tethering not working - Captivate General

So we all know that the stock softare the Captivate came with allows tethering through the "PC Connection" option. And we all know that it went away with the OTA update that AT&T pushed out.
Well, I updated to the cognition 2.2 rom, and honestly its incredible. Came rooted, with the OCLF installed and was able to lag fix it.
I've had two issues since this update so far:
1) Email doesnt include my message when I forward an email (found a fix for this, requires replacing the Email.apk)
2) The USB tethering option doesnt work. I can turn it on, and my computer sees it as a samsung networking device, etc. But it only shows connected on the local network, not to the internet. I turn it on, windows goes through its process with drivers, etc and enables it as a networking device and I see it try and make a connection. It connects (local lan only) and sits on "identifying network...' for a while, then asks which type of connection to set it as (home, work, or whatever) and finishes.. But I do not have internet access, just local lan....
So basically I cannot get the USB tethering option to work with cognition 2.2.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure how to fix out but it does work on stock Captivate FROYO.
edit: stopped working.

I had initially flashed to the leaked 2.2 froyo for captivate that came out last weekend... I had the same issues with that.
Are you saying that you got USB tethering working on the leaked 2.2 for captivate?
Do you have a tethering plan with AT&T?

I have similar issues with the 2.2 system. The USB tethering is not recognizable by my computer (I may be doing something wrong here). Also, I can connect form my computer to the Mobile AP on the phone, but there is no Internet access. Is this something wrong with the application or is it an ATT filter type of thing?
Anyways, I went and installed the wireless tethering from Google http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list and it works with no problems.
It would be way better to get the mobile AP application working though. Any thoughts?

My wireless tendering works fine.. Its the usb tethering that doesn't work...

Interesting. Lets see if we can get both of these solved...

So no one else has had any issues using USB Tethering (native 2.2) when using the Cognition 2.2 rom?
Wireless tethering works fine. BTW.

USB tethering and Wifi AP mode work fine using Ubuntu Linux.
This is the kernel version I'm using:
2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

OK i am now having this issue. I had 2.2 a few days back and tested USB, it worked, but I took it off for some I9000 ROMs.
Now i am back on Cog 2.2 b 5.5. I tested USB and it got me to speedtest.net then downloaded and gave a result. When it uploaded, it worked for a second, then the value kept dropping till it stalled out.
When i tried it again, I couldn't get to any webpages. It no longer worked.

Both USB tethering and mobile AP do not work for me with Cognition 2.2 beta 6.
GPS doesn't work well either

I am running cognition 2.2 beta 5.5 with the tethering option. I have a laptop running vista. I had a connect card but stopped service as too expensive. Now i primarily use my phone but there are times i may need my laptop so want to know tethering works. where i live there is no dsl, cable or wifi. What exactly are the steps for setting up usb tethering for the phone and the laptop? I have tried and tried but nothing works so far.
After the connect card was turned off i was able to do the tethering but when i uninstalled the at&t communication manager it stopped. Should that still be installed?
Very frustrating. I am thinking of updating to beta7. Would that maybe help?
All help will be greatly appreciated.

You can always download easy tether from the market and give that a try. There is a free version, and from what I hear it really is easy.
As for me both mobile ap usb tether work in cog 2.2b6

USB tethering worked fine for me on 2.2B6. I even posted on XDA using it.
But a lot of people have reported problems. What cable are you using? What other network connections are enabled? Is this a work computer?

This is my personal laptop running vista. Are certain settings set up in the network settings on the computer? would updating to b7 help? i am using a usb cable and works fine for everything else. And worked fine before i deleted att communication manager. Thanks

Generally speaking, if something isn't working on a Cog ROM, it probably isn't because of DG or the Cog ROM. It's probably something with the Froyo leak, Captivates in general, your own hardware, or all of the above. In this case, I'm pretty sure the Froyo leak already had USB tether in it and Cog didn't touch it (correct me if I'm wrong). You can try flashing again, or try searching a broader range of forums for help with troubleshooting USB tethering in general (or problems USB tethering in circumstances that reflect the laptop you're using), not necessarily just for this phone.
But if it worked fine before deleting AT&T communication manager then that seems to be a good indicator that you need that program installed. What did you use to uninstall it? I don't even see that on mine, but I currently don't use a good program to see everything that is installed.

The communication manager was installed so i could use the att connect card and since so many have no problematic i would imagine this is not the problem. I am thinking of going back to stock to see if i can use Pc connection which is not on the cognition 2.2. then i van flash to b7. i appreciate the advice.

How do I use USB tether on OS X?
Thanks,
JOe K.
Using Cog2.2b8 as a wireless AP

Any ideas on this?

with cog 2.2b8
I've USB teathered successfully on two different windows 7 computers
heres the secret:
1. plug the usb cable in the phone and the computer
2. on the phone: hit mini kies for the usb type, then go to settings->wireless->teathering and check the box
3. on the PC:
let it try and find the NDIS driver, finding/loading the driver may fail, but it doesn't seem to actually matter.
4. once it goes into "identifying" mode, in the taskbar, let it do that for a few secondsminute or so, and then
5. pull the usb out on the computer, and you should get the public/private/home network type window to come up, select public
6. now when put the usb back in, it will work from that point on forward with no problems

Tethering on Sprint???

How can i connect this phone to my laptop to use it as a modem? Im switching from a Touch Pro with windows mobile and I had "internet connection sharing" for that.
root access hasnt been obtained yet for the sprint hero. only way currently is to pay for the tethering package through sprint....sit tight, root will come soon enough...
If you install HTC Sync, plug in the Hero and then enable Mobile network sharing under wireless settings it is recognised as a RNDIS device. Mine seems to try and connect but I get an error 67 message.

Thank you for the quick responses. My boss wants to get this phone so I need to make sure that PDAnet works perfectly. Is it just plug&play, or do u need to start a program on the phone or PC?
I'm running windows 7 on a bone stock phone and all I had to do was install HTC Sync (downloadable from the phone itself or better yet, from the HTC website).
I installed that and then enabled Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile network sharing. This works just fine for me. (Being windows 7, I had to manually install the driver for the NDIS device that showed up but that's all included in the install (or anywhere on the web if you google for it)).
HTC Sync just kindof runs in the background once installed.
EDIT: I don't have any special tethering package either...just their Simply Everything plan for smartphones.

Yes, you need to start the PDAnet program on the phone and on the computer. When you first install the program on your pc it configure a virtual modem driver in order to reconize the phone as an internet connection.
I have been using it for a few days.. Works great so far. I would be connected to the usb anyways to keep my phone powered up.

(I am running mine on XP.) Make sure HTC sync is not running. 64bit Windows Vista drivers can get tricky. If I get a chance I ll run to my friend who is running Vista 64 and try and see if I get the same results.
Wish I could get root access to try out the phone as a wifi router but I guess we will have to wait.

USB Tether enabled on stock AT&T?

I searched the Captivate forum to see if AT&T left USB tether enabled on the phone and couldn't find squat. I'm inclined to assume that they disabled the capability unless you paid the extra $20 (or $30, whichever it is) to use the feature. Can anyone confirm please?
It does work

2. Enable Wifi, and obviously connect to a wifi network
3. Search Market for PDANet (which is free)
4. Download

I can personally attest to the fact that the Captivate WILL tether straight out of the box with NO third party app needed if you get the right USB drivers installed and just select PC Internet when you plug in the USB.. Wifi tether is a bit more touchy though..

Anybody have a link to where I can get them?
Anyone have some details on which drivers work for tethering? I am using the ones off Samsung's site and its telling me that it cannot start up the modem, perhaps im using the wrong drivers.

Drivers posted on Samsung US site does not contain network driver for tethering (no supprise there). AndroidForums.com Captivate forum has a sticky to download drivers that do include tethering.
If you don't feel comfortable going that way, you can download Kies from Samsung UK or any other non-US site. Kies has the proper driver included in the installation. If you don't like to use Kies, you can uninstall it and the driver will stay.
I ended up with Kies, The network device connects but I cannot reach open internet. Any thoughts?

It depends how you connect your phone. If you select USB mdoe to 'Kies' mode, you will have to use modem tethering inside the Kies application on your PC to connect. Otherwise, you need to set your phone to 'PC Internet' mode and your PC should be able to connect to internet once plugged in. No Kies needed in this mode.
Personally I don't see much value of the Kies (I can use WMP to do all the media transferring). Hence I uninstalled Kies and left the network driver alone.
This is while its set to PC Internet.
it just randomly started to work, hell I wont complain lol

Linux/Ubuntu USB tethering - how-to?

I've been trying to use the built-in USB tethering with Ubuntu 10.10 without any luck. On my previous Android phones (EVO, Nexus One), all I had to do was plug in the phone, select Internet Connection Mode or USB Tethering, and Ubuntu would automatically find a new connection (Auto usb0). That's it...no config needed.
The Thunderbolt has been another story. I can't get Ubuntu to see an internet connection for anything.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I'd really prefer to use the built-in tethering rather than go to something like EasyTether or PdaNet.
I'd still say easytether
All I have to do is type easytether connect and bam
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Me too
I also have been trying desperately to make this work too, since it worked so well with my Eris and other phones. I think the problem lies in the proprietary HTC drivers - it seems that the driver built into LibUSB for cellular modems doesn't play nice with the HTC software. In Windows, there is an executable that installs the driver, and I have been thinking that I might be able to make it work using Ndiswrapper, but I have not had time to play around with it a whole lot.
I suspect that a release will come along eventually to update libUSB to work with the new HTC software, but in the mean time, EasyTether works great. I made a quicklaunch icon in gnome panel that links to the the EasyTether connection script - it will have to do until I can get native tethering to work.
If anyone else is working on this, I'd be willing to lend a hand with testing and troubleshooting.
Seems like I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 and my rooted HD2 running Android. I think it has got something to do with the RDNIS drivers or something ??? Easytether is no option because it works for like 5 minutes then I need to restart the connection to get it working again ( very annoying ). I would much rather prefer to use the inbuilt tethering option on my rooted phone than yet another pointless piece of software. Maybe another Linux distro that supports this way of tethering ???
Thanks !

Use phone as wireless adapter?(NOT WIRELESS TETHERING)

I want to know if there is a way to use an android device as a wireless adapter? Not wireless tethering of your data connection but the ability to use the wifi connection on your pc.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Turn your data off and turn on your WiFi, connect to the desired network and try to tether via usb to your phone. This should hopefully bridge your connection if you have an aosp ROM. I'm not sure about sense, as I've never tried it on a sense ROM before.

He meant to say, connect to wifi and in settings there will be an option to tether via usb
Although i am also not sure about sense roms
Or you can use a market app
There are many, Easy Tether will do the job

okay well I have a droid 3 so there aren't any roms out for it and when I try a wifi tether app from the market it disables your wifi

Okay, so basically what you're going to be doing is using your phone as a USB WiFi dongle. To do this, follow these instructions VERY carefully.
1) Assuming that you are already rooted (via z4root, Gingerbreak, or some other means), search for "EasyTether Lite" on the Android Market and download it.
2) Go into Settings>Wireless & Networks
3) Uncheck the box that says "Mobile Network", "3G", "Mobile Data" or something along those lines.
4) Check the box that says "WiFi" and connect to the desired network.
5) Now, download and install the drivers you need for EasyTether to work with your computer here (note that you are going to do this from your computer and not your phone): http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/drivers.html
6) Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable and open the EasyTether app. Enable tethering and with a little bit of magic and fairy dust, you should now have a connection on your computer.
Good luck mate.

what we look for is using android phone to connect other devices not only to internet but also to each other .
We could do it with our modem, but with tethering is like a hotspot , every device can connect internet but cannot see other devices.
Everywhere i looked was explainin "how to tether" which is built in android 2.2 already.
Helps will be highly appreciated
Is it too simple?
I had trouble getting USB tethering on my macbook, not my PC, but:
I searched the market for USB tethering.
and with "Easy Tether lite" (the first app in the search results; there are other options, I tried this one first and it worked great).
I installed on my phone, ran it, followed the wizard, had to install USB tethering drivers for OS X at some point.
Now:
Phone getting WiFi from my router and entering my computer via usb.
I even set it up now to send this very post!!
cheers,

EDIT: (Hmm, your syntax is kind of shaky, original poster... You don't mean use the computer as a wireless adapter for your phone do you?? that would be internet pass-through, yes? I think you do mean USB tethering but using a WiFi source, not the mobile connection. Is this as simple as hooking up a usb data tether but using the WiFi instead of 3G from your phone, such as to use a dingy laptop without wireless to get the WiFi in a Starbucks/etc/etc? Hmm.
Otherwise, your phone is not a WiFi wireless adapter, it has one that your phone OS connects to, which then "usb tethers" to computer...
I've never even seen a usb cable that connects a mobile phone to a mobile phone. Haha. I suppose if you had one, you should be able to USB tether from one phone and Internet Pass-Through on the other.....:/ )
Check out this thing called Bluetooth for that. It works wonders.

solution without additional software while having cyanogenmod
This works with cyanogenmod10 out of the box. Probably also possible with cm7/cm9 too.
Connect phone via cable to pc, connect phone to wifi, enable "USB-Tethering" (Settings -> Tethering/Hotspot), let OS detect the new device, done.
I know this thread has no activity since over a year, but if anybody finds this page like me while searching for this topic, I could be helpful for him knowing a method without using additional software while having cyanogenmod.

NEITHER USB NOR WIFI TETHERING(like easy tether lite or many other options available on XDA.) I actually just tried the above program and it works. It has serious limitations if your not getting the paid version. Blocks a bunch of webs sites and all secure ones. It does work though. I really wish Verizon would not have found it necessary to remove wifi sharing over USB for some dam reason. The S7 I have, had it factory and they removed it. Not sure why? Seeing how it does not have a fuking thing to do with the mobile network. I can actual tether my computer by USB using mobile network and can't from my wifi. Can already bypass they're tethering fee.
I will continue reading and searching till I find a way to undo or work around big reds unnecessary removal of this feature. Even if it involves crawling a 1000 miles on my hands and knees, on broken glass to find some big wig and beating the reversal out of him with the very S7 I'm typing this on.

[Q] Bluetooth Tether On Official ICS

I've been waiting and waiting for ICS to come out, so that I can use bluetooth tethering to my PC at work, like I do with my wifi-only Xoom. Unfortunately, this seems to be disabled. Can someone please confirm this and let me know if there is a way to enable it? I've seen the thread about enabling it on the 4.0.4 leak with the SQLLite hack, but I'm not sure this would work with the new ICS.
Thanks!
Though I have another Bluetooth issue (mentioning it here cause it also lists a driver issue in computer which is a common issue) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931540
I have mentioned therein I was successfully able to establish BT tether (will probably post a screenshot later) but If I recall, I had to right click the device (our phone listed under "Printers & Devices" on Win 7) & then click connect & only then the tether went thru successfully and until then it did not. I hope it makes sense to you. BT Tether is very much part of ICS 4.0.4 stock OTA upgrade (can't say about custom ROM's)

Can someone please confirm this and let me know if there is a way to enable it? I've seen the thread about enabling it on the 4.0.4 leak with the SQLLite hack, but I'm not sure this would work with the new ICS.
Thanks!

My son always tethered to my Atrix 2 with his ipod touch and he also can no longer connect since I updated to stock ICS. I'm rooted and using SQLite Editor, but I see nothing in the settings.db that remotely looks like enabling bluetooth PAN (tethering). Anyone else have a fix?
Can't bluetooth tether anymore
I used to connect my android tablet to my atrix 2 over bluetooth with GB on the atrix 2 and have internet on the tablet. Now with ICS on the atrix 2, I no longer have the internet profile listed under bluetooth when connecting to it from the tablet, and I cannot get internet to my tablet.
It appears that downgrading my OTA ICS is not an option (but I'm still searching), so am I hoping that I can enable this bluetooth ability again. Has anyone found a way to do this?
I am having a similar issue, I just got a nexus 7 and was hoping to bluetooth tether my A2 to it. I don't use bluetooth really at all, but I wanted to use it for this. When I first tried to set it up I could pair my A2 to my N7 but it wouldn't connect. I tried connecting my A2 to my laptop, same thing, it would pair but not connect. However, I could pair, connect, and transfer files between my N7 and my laptop.
I cleared data from bluetooth share and rebooted, no luck.
I cleared data from bluetooth dun and rebooted. At this point I could pair, connect and transfer files with my A2 and laptop, but still couldn't connect with N7.
I downloaded bluetooth file transfer from the market. It said that I could only transfer files to the other device not from it (same thing whether I did it from the A2 or N7). It said that I connected, but when I tried to transfer a file I would get an error.
I downloaded foxfi and pdanet table from the market, couldn't connect or tether with this either.
I did a factory reset, still laptop worked, N7 didn't.
When I go into the bluetooth setting on my A2 or my N7 the only options I have for either are to change name, or unpair.
After each troubleshooting step, I tried to see if my N7 was able to access my A2's data, but it never could.
I have searched extensively and have been unable to find an answer or a solution.
Essentially, I want to tether my A2 to my N7 with bluetooth, They will pair witheachother but they will not connect. Help?
