Hey all,
I did some searching and didn't find pertinent results so I just hope I'm not asking the same question for the 10th time or anything - if I am, sorry!
I own a Vibrant, I have till Friday to return it so I'm trying to get some info about 2.2 on the Captivate hoping that the Vibrant will get the same changes.
1a. I'm extremely hung up on the contact manager. You know, having to import contacts from your gmail synced list to your internal phone memory in order to get ringtones and pictures added to them from the phone. Adding pictures isn't a big deal, that can be done right from gmail contacts, but the ringtones are a big deal, at least for me. I've tried lots of workarounds. I tried importing and then hiding the phone contacts, but the information on the contact's info profile still doubles up (2 birthdays, 2 addresses, etc.) which is annoying to me.
I've tried using 3rd party apps to assign ringtones that they successfully assign (according to the app), but don't actually work/activate the tone when the contact calls. I refuse to sit there and add manual 'dummy' contacts to the phone in order to get it to work. It's an android device and one of the top reasons I'm interested is the 'typical' ability to sync your contacts to and from gmail with ease. Currently, the way Touchwiz handles contacts is 100% contradictory to the android experience.
1b. Contacts situation again. Touchwiz ignores groups and nicknames/file as details set in gmail. So, for example, you'd have John Doe set in your Gmail as Dad or Uncle John and under Family, but it's synced into your Vibrant/Captivate as John Doe with no group assignment. The groups thing is obvious - it doesn't sync in groups, it doesn't see your groups in gmail contacts and you can't even assign contacts to groups unless, like the ringtone/pictures situation, you import the contacts into the device. The problem with this is of course, that should you have to switch or reset the phone for any reason, unless it's another Samsung phone you're pretty much screwed because you lose groups AGAIN.
1c. More contacts stuff....you can't sync or copy over ONE contact. So, lets say you've worked around the issue by doing your little import to SD, import to Phone....then you add a few contacts to gmail - you can't copy them to the phone independently. Now, say you're slick and you add your contact to the phone instead of gmail, then that means the contact(s) aren't synced with google. No which way you look at it...you're adding something manually or you're losing out. It's a conundrum, and as I mentioned...completely contradictory to how contacts are typically handled in the android OS.
For all intents and purposes, I really wish Samsung would just get rid of Touchwiz. I adore the 7 home screens and the super easy settings at the top of the notification area - but I can sacrifice those for a working contact manager.
Love the Vibrant except for the contact management on it. There are a few more quirks but this is what warrants my exchanging the Vibrant for something else.
2. I think I hear that the 2.2 leak doesn't contain the optimizations like JIT and the new Kernel, if I am incorrect in that, could someone provide some benchmarks based on a somewhat 'stock' experience of 2.2 including these things? The reason I say stock is that I really prefer not to root or mod my Vibrant, so I'd be depending on 2.2 STOCK and I'd like to know if the benchmark results are significantly higher than they are currently. By some simple calculations the Vibrant with 2.2 and JIT/new kernel should be around ~1900 which is the same as the Desire HD.
See, I'm deliberating getting the new Mytouch. I'd really hoped the rumors of a dual core cpu were true, but as they're not I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to exchange for the mytouch or keep the Vibrant and pray for a 'hack free' boost in performance with 2.2.
This is all moot of course if the contact problems still exist because I just can't get comfortable with it as it is right now.
Thanks in advance.
Froyo fixes a lot of contact stuff, but it is hard to answer all your questions because it sort of broken.
Froyo does bring in all google groups and their related entries - the problem is that if you sort group and pick a name "John Smith" the contact sheet for "Abigail Jones" pops up. So their indexing of groups and their entries is messed up - but it is all there.
I am pretty sure I saw that you could assign a ring tone directly to a google contact without importing it into the phone.
I had to roll back due to Email bugs i couldn't work around, but it looks like 2.2 fixes most things. As for JIT - that is part of the base code, so I would expect it to be there.
Ooooh. Thanks
Man oh man I hope they get it all worked out.
According to build.prop, JIT is enabled.
I was speaking in reference to a post I saw on youtube where he did a benchmark and the Vibrant got something like 990. Now, I get 897 on stock 2.1. A jump by less than 100pts would mean that 2.2 has done nothing in terms of speed and optimization to Froyo - then I read a comment by the poster which said that his leaked build didn't include the new kernel or jit so I was relieved.
Does anyone have current benchmarks of the Captivate with 'naked' 2.2 WITH jit and the new kernel? (naked meaning stock 2.2 with touchwiz but no lag fix or hacks)

Hi all,
Absolutely love the work here.
I've been averaging a weekly rebuild on my HD2.
So much so that I've got a step-by-step instruction folder.
The last rebuild yesterday from a blank home page. Go figure.
I've been looking for a BG4all.cab
for my Dusk Theme GreenGlob.PNG background.
I'll find a BG4All.cab
but it either doens't work at all
or it will install a different background than the one I want
and will sometimes install other things as well.
Just wondering if its really complicated
or are we too busy with more interesting
development work to focus on this issue?
i.e. a BG4All.cab with accompanying graphic of our choice.
Again, just asking. Not criticising at all. Certainly not my place.

I've also been looking for a Sync to Mobile Contacts.
i.e. I've got 300 Contacts in Outlook on my PC.
I have an HD2 I use for contacts that I visit once only.
I would like to sync my HD2 with my OnceOnly contacts catagory from Outlook. And NOT bloat the HD2 with the other 300 contacts.
Anyone know of a way or have a software update to select only certain contacts or catagorys from outlook to Sync?

All my best,
Barry G. Sumpter
I have a HTC Legend with Android 2.1 and Sense with around 450 Contacts, about 150 of them with photos, all stored and synced with my Gmail Contacts.
My Contact Database is the biggest single application in Android, with 13.7 MB shown, 0.00 for the application and all for data (in Settings/Application/Manage - 'Contacts Storage version 7').
Besides the point, that even with more pictures it should be much less (most of it is text anyway and the Google Pics are small low-res squares) - it seems, that there is a bug or leak somewhere.
When I add a contact with pic, syncing it to Google, it will increase the Contact Database. But after deleting the same contact and syncing again - it's not back to the original size. It's 0.1 MB more than before adding the contact.
That looks, like some garbage or overhead is stored still in the device, regardless of the number of contacts or if some are removed.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, what I could do, to erase that overhead and get my contact database size back to a reasonable size?
Thanks a million!
Am I the only one with this problem?
i have the same problem on the stock cdma hero 2.1 (.5) room, rooted.
mine is like, 30mb
think its the 900 or so facebook friends
here was my fix (or workaround, rather, since you can't sync all your stuff or use fb photos for your contacts DAMNIT)
under accounts and sync, disable google and facebook contacts sync
under contacts, export the ones you would like to keep to the sdcard
under settings, click applications, manage applications, then contacts storage
clear data
open contacts, import the rest from your sd card
if you want to keep all your fb numbers, use the fb live folder from the fb app
Hm, your problem sounds similar, but it's also different.
I didn't add any FB contacts. If I click on 'view' in the People app, I only have 446 Google contacts and nothing else.
But how big is your contact storage now, after you eliminated the FB contacts? And how many contacts you have in the phone and how many with pics?
Maybe we can get a bit closer to the root of the issue. Thanks!
i don't think i ever synced my gmail contacts, or meant to, but if i did, there's like 1000
and 900 fb contacts all with photos
now that i only have 23 contacts, all not connected to fb so no photos, im at like 225kb of storage.
Oh yeah, I have the FB Phonebook Folder, but in there are only 35 of my FB contacts, probably only those who publish their phone numbers.
i'm going to just sync my fb contacts now and see where it puts me
i have a feeling every time you delete a contact the data still stays there even if you can't see it.

Definitely it is like that. I tested it....about 0.1 MB remains in my device, that doesn't sound like much, but can add up pretty fast.
we can't be the only two having this issue? i wonder why no one else has chimed in... i even mentioned it in the hdma hero threads...
i'd really like to have the 1.5 contacts app back, it didn't seem to act this way... i tried to push it to my phone but it never worked properly, either did an install
I deleted the database and let it rebuild from Facebook and Google. It rebuilt back up to 10Mb!
So I guess we are stuck with it.
I'm having the same issue as well.
I have the same problem on my HTC Hero 2.1 (stock rom). My contacts database is over 12mb, even after deleting more than 100 contacts. I'm constantly having to uninstall apps I want in order to deal with the increasing size of the contacts database. This was never an issue before upgrading to 2.1.
How do I get my HTC Incredible (w/ Froyo 2.2) on Verizon to stop overriding my pictures? I want my contacts "linked" to their Facebook profile, but I want to use the picture that I have selected and not the one that Facebook feels I should be using without warning.
I am very anal about my profile pictures and have selected nice pics for everyone in my book. I have went in to each profile picture and selected my Google picture (my personal selected picture) and the contact picture becomes my picture. No problem...
I open my contacts sometime in the near future (day/less than a day) and magically some (not all) random contacts revert back to the Facebook picture without warning!
This is making me utterly crazy! Does anyone have any idea how to get this to stop?!?
I have tried:
Unlinking the facebook profile, saving, updating picture, saving, relinking to facebook, saving.
Screaming loudly
Searched every thread known to man with no look (if you know where the answer is, please point me there! PLEASE!)
Rebooted
This was happening before Froyo as well, so this is an existing problem for a while I suppose.
I honestly don't think there's a way to stop this. Atleast I never found one.
A workaround would be to not allow Sense to sync your Facebook contacts.
The whole point of his post though was he wants the contacts linked with their Facebook profiles, just doesn't want the picture switched on him when he's already selected one he likes.
I really feel where you're coming from OP, this has been driving me nuts for awhile now. I think it's an HTC Sense UI issue though. At least, that's what I have gathered from other forums/posts.
The thing which did work for me - open the contact main page, then press the link icon, then a new screen will pop up, there is a slider next to the picture, click on it and it will let you chose a picture. I needed to do it a couple of times so just do it 2-3 times if it doesn't come up the first time
and jbucklee welcome to xda
I have round 1,200 contacts on my exchange server
For quite a number of friends I saved only the first name. And this @&%^# contact app from Samsung joins all the people who have the same first name (When nop last name is saved). How convenient...
I "could" go trough all my contacts and split them. But it's slow. And every time I flash a new ROM and charge my contacts through exchange they get agregated again
Is there a settting somewhere where we can prevent the application from merging contacts ? Or if keeps on doing so, is it possible to have it save the fact you split the contacts somewhere on my exchnage account (So that it doesn't do it again the next time I reload everything...)
Or maybe some of you have already settled for another Contact manager app
It's super annoying
Anyone?

dont know the answer but writing this to wish you luck i have 120 contacts and it was a real pain to put it in order 1200 contacts i cant imagine
Isn't it confusing anyway having multiple contacts with the exact same name? How do you know which is which?
I make sure all my contacts have either a last name, or some differentiating text at least.
There's no way to stop the app doing it automatically, the only options are to either clean up your contact entries at the GMail end, or use a different contacts app.

I use exchange but yeah I get what you mean by "clean up your contact entries at the GMail end"
How do I differentiate ? The good stuff with smartphone sis we can include pictures... Same first name different picture --> fastest way to differentiate for me. However the stupid app merges the contacts and put the pic of the first contact --> I am lost
Honestly, not having the option is a shame. That's a bad application. At the very least it should allow you to choose to merge automatically or not. At best it should leave you the choice of the aggregation key (Which filelds make a contact unique)
That sucks badly... very poor level of programming...
Actually i was wrong. This crappy piece of software also sometimes joins contacts that have a last name... I don't know what to say. I don't understand why there is no option to decide the key of oining contacts (Or simply disable it...)
I have moved contacts from SIM to phone, added contacts over time, and before changing phones, moved all contacts to the SIM creating duplicates. Some I think are from facebook and have no numbers. Some I have up to 5 duplicates.
In display options I have "Only contacts with phone numbers" unchecked with everything below also checked. A particular contact has 6 entries. A couple have numbers, most are empty and one facebook. When I select show only contacts with numbers I get 2. When I go to SIM management to export to SIM I see 6 again. There is no way to distinguish which has a number or any way to filter. All there is, is a checkbox and a name 6 times. I even merged the 5 of them and when I went to export to SIM I saw all of them separately again.
I can't write all 800+ to the SIM so how can I only transfer the ones with numbers attached??? The only way I can delete the contacts without numbers is to open the contact, see if it has a number and delete. I seriously don't want to do that 500 times.
Is there a smart way to write only the contacts with numbers to the SIM? I surely would appreciate the help!
Running 2.3.6
Why are you saving to sim card? Just manage them in contacts app and they sync with Google account between devices. There's an option in Google desktop contacts to merge duplicates.
BTW, sim contacts are stored as one contact per number. So a phone contact with 2 numbers will actually create 2 separate entries when exported to sim card.
I'm looking up Google Contacts and it has been discontinued. I found Google Desktop, but then started running across all these plug-in and fixes for different problems of mismatched databases...
I write them to the SIM so I can switch it another phone and have them all. It's just how I've been doing it since before any back-up capabilities. I suppose I need to open a new email account that doesn't have a couple of hundred email addresses to deal with and no phone numbers. Facebook contacts got copied as a name only because they were an entry I guess. No email address or anything.
I do need to find some way of merging all the duplicates. Do you have another suggestion that's not going to require me to read and dig up a discontinued program that I can continue to use? lol
I'm referring to the contacts in your Google (i.e. Gmail) account, certainly no discontinued and no plugin required, just log into it from a browser and go to the contacts tab. All of your contacts should be synced from your phone and you can find duplicates and merge there, which will then sync back to your phone.
Guess I'm making the assumption that you have a Gmail or Google apps account, which is almost a necessity with an Android device.
^ what he said. Its much easier to manage contacts in Gmail and have it sync over. If you change number or lost your phone no need to ask people for their number ever.

I agree that it's easier to maintain it how you say.
That was nuts! I thought they were already synchronized with gmail, but I guess not. I went through and deleted what I wanted in gmail, then everything in my phone. I went to sync bac and it said it couldn't becuase of too many deleted contacts. I thought, yes, just delete them. Then I watched all my contacts disappear from my gmail account on my PC. Gmail has a cool feature to resore contacts as they were minute by minute. Eventually I got the whole list back and on my phone.
Thanks for the help! Saving them to the SIM is old school now...
I rooted my phone last night and thinking about installing ICS, the second leaked version UCLD2 because I'm not liking the lock screen on 2.3.6. I want to find a setup for my Skyrocket that people are liking, but that's kind of hard.... Hey, here's a great ROM. Camera is broken, WiFi has issues, screen gets stuck in wrong orientation... but it's great! Does't seem to be much out there for the Skyrocket. I was looking in the forum here under my correct phone type. Suggestions? I know, wrong thread, just asking a BTW...
ROM
check out skyrocket Android development for Listing of Roms. I'm using SKYICS
I think that's where I got the UCLD2. I don't like it at all. I don't know if apps don't work because they're not ready, of if it's this version of ICS. People say it sucks for the battery and it's because messaging sits there and uses 90 of the cpu even in my pocket and the phone gets hot for no reason. I'll look up yours. Thanks Raven
Just click menu and merge with google
