[Q] Facebook replacing my Google pictures automatically when I don't want it to! - General Questions and Answers

How do I get my HTC Incredible (w/ Froyo 2.2) on Verizon to stop overriding my pictures? I want my contacts "linked" to their Facebook profile, but I want to use the picture that I have selected and not the one that Facebook feels I should be using without warning.
I am very anal about my profile pictures and have selected nice pics for everyone in my book. I have went in to each profile picture and selected my Google picture (my personal selected picture) and the contact picture becomes my picture. No problem...
I open my contacts sometime in the near future (day/less than a day) and magically some (not all) random contacts revert back to the Facebook picture without warning!
This is making me utterly crazy! Does anyone have any idea how to get this to stop?!?
I have tried:
Unlinking the facebook profile, saving, updating picture, saving, relinking to facebook, saving.
Screaming loudly
Searched every thread known to man with no look (if you know where the answer is, please point me there! PLEASE!)
Rebooted
This was happening before Froyo as well, so this is an existing problem for a while I suppose.

I honestly don't think there's a way to stop this. Atleast I never found one.
A workaround would be to not allow Sense to sync your Facebook contacts.

The whole point of his post though was he wants the contacts linked with their Facebook profiles, just doesn't want the picture switched on him when he's already selected one he likes.
I really feel where you're coming from OP, this has been driving me nuts for awhile now. I think it's an HTC Sense UI issue though. At least, that's what I have gathered from other forums/posts.

The thing which did work for me - open the contact main page, then press the link icon, then a new screen will pop up, there is a slider next to the picture, click on it and it will let you chose a picture. I needed to do it a couple of times so just do it 2-3 times if it doesn't come up the first time

Facebook issues with sprint touch pro2

hey has anyone have issue with bringing in pictures into the contacts. it shows that i am connected but i cant see any of the picture in my contacts. i also can see any updates. any ideas?
I tried this today on a VZ version.
Same problem as you, first page of my FB contacts will load the pics, but nothing under that (page where you associate them).
Also, if you remove their FB link here, I think it removes them as a friend.
It was hit or miss for me on the Sprint version. Probably 75% of my fb contacts imported pictures while the rest whom I know have pictures, failed to load and save.
Also, I did remove a couple associations and it didn't removed them as a friend on fb.
If anyone knows why, let us know!
it doesn't remove them as a friend, it just doesn't let you associate the same person the next time you try. It may even be that you just have to back out of the edit contacts and then return to editing the contact again. I don't remember how picky it was. baffled me at first too.

Just noticed a bit ago, logged in on the pc, and that contact is still a friend. I'll have to check to see if I can try to associate later.
Linking a profile will temporarily remove the person from your list of available friends to link with. If you wait a minute or two after removing their link, they will reappear in the list.
I also have had issues with some friends' photos not importing. My only theory was that I was linking the friend too quickly .. if I waited for the small thumbnail image to load next to their name before linking, it seemed to work every time. I didn't test this extensively, though.
Also, some for some friends I was able to get a photo to load by using the "Update Photo" button. Oddly, for a couple of contacts that still didn't work.
There are definietly a few bugs in this functionality.
When I had major problems with my facebook manila, I broke my activesync partnership (thus deleting all my contacts) recreated and relinked my facebook friends. Everything good after that. Backup your PIM if you're not on Exchange.
I had problems with Facebook to in the beginning. Conatcts pictures wouldn't show up. I found with a few people there pictrue showed up next time they logged on. A few didn't show up though but as soon as I went to edit and add photo and birthday I saw there pic and they were added. I see there status now in my contacts list or I can go to updates and events and click on there name to go to there profile to read there full status. I like it and have the Sprint version. My 1st smartphone/windows mobile phone and I really like it.

[REQ] Decent Contact Pictures!

I'm fed up. 2 Android revisions, and no fix. And no third party fix I can find that doesn't require HTC Sense.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=12116
Contact pictures get resized to 96x96 when you sync with Google. Then the phone tries to display them at 210x210 when you get an incoming call. Not only is this stupid, it looks horrible.
There is no way to force the phone to STORE A LOCAL, HIGH-RES VERSION of your contact images (whether they came from Facebook, 5 MP cam built in, or a Canon 7D) because the sync with Google will overwrite them with the crappy 96x96 that Google Contacts uses. Yes, I understand all of these services are free, but there are at least a dozen more bug reports like mine up there.
I understand I can disable Google Sync. I am not going to disable Google Sync, and then MANUALLY set all of my contact images. Because as soon as I add a contact or make some change, I will want to sync, and wham-o, all the pictures are back to 96x96.
I understand there's some work around with Sense that allows you to create a "Phone" contact, set the high-res picture there, and then link it to any relevant contacts. I don't have Sense, I'm using CM6 on an N1, and I don't want to use Sense. It should work out of the damn box.
Any ideas?
+1 on that issue, it really annoys me to see pixalated contacts...

Question about gallery downloads and attachments.

Why would droid OS have all attachments in emails download into your gallery?
How can I stop it? I unchecked "download attachments", but as soon as I open the email to view the attachment, it downloads and puts a copy into my gallery. After vewing the pic, I have to go into gallery and delete it.
Is there anything I can do about this?
Question 2, I saved a pic from a MMS by pressing the and holding the pic. I saved to "SD card". when I go into gallery, its not there?
So for this droid has been okay, but why do they make things so difficult at times!
Any suggestions!
Downloads go into the download folder. While in the gallery you can select to view/hide this folder, or "album" by pressing the menu button. They may not show up immediately in the gallery due to a media scan being required.
i think this is a new bug in sense UI or something because i read this elsewhere about all png's and gif's and email attachment junk showing up in the gallery, and it should not be doing that in any way. like if i receive an email with a border around the email, that border should not be showing up in my gallery as a photo!!!!
so far i've not seen any solution to this.
Yep, I am glad some else is familiar with this!!! Can anyone else confirm this?
Same here. This is my first day on a non-Apple phone since 2007. This is top among a growing list of annoyances. And not just because "Apple doesn't do it that way" but because no one should do it that way.
I can confirm that on my AT&T Inspire 4G, every tiny little logo in everyone's signatures on my corporate email account has bloated my Gallery to over 200 images in one day. Only one of those images is one that I actually wanted to save from an MMS.
I've seen people posting suggestions about how to selectively disable the gallery from seeing certain folders by adding .nomedia files to those folders, but images saved from the Messages app get saved to the same folder as all the garbage harvested from email attachments, and I would like to see those.
This needs to be fixed. People shouldn't be fiddling in the file system for something as basic as browsing the photos on their phone.
Yep I agree 100%, there must be a way for us new guys to do away with this. I am sure it can be done if I would root my phone, but also myself coming from a Iphone, jailbreaking was a easy task. After reading the steps involved in rooting, I do not feel comfortable, I simply don't understand the language. I would love to root it and unleash this beast.
no idea if this will work on the inspire, but on the captivate to get a folder to not show up in gallery you had to put a file called .nomedia in the folder you don't want included.
An easy way to get this is from a command prompt: adb shell
then do touch .nomedia /whatever/folder/you/want it in.
I'm guessing this is only using the sense email app. I don't have a problem with this using gmail. I would suggest using a different email app until HTC gets an update out. Downloading and setting up a different email app takes way less time than deleting hundreds of images daily. Make sure you contact HTC support in regards to bugs and security. Files and pictures being auto downloaded is a pretty big security hole IMO.
I called att today and they called HTC, they never heard of this issue. They are sending me a new phone to replace mine!

Contacts-Favorites.. FU HTC?

So i Synced up and linked all my google and facebook contacts to my phone..
Then i started playing around with the stock widgets, one being that Favorites bar thats there when you start the phone for the first time. Just for ****s and grins i loaded the first contact with a picture.
Now i want to get rid of it. But it seems the kid with the water wings and helmet was assigned to this part of the build, its ****ing impossible to get the favorite to go away. I went to edit contact, went to groups, and there it listed two copies of the same name, both for google, both groups set for favorites. I unchecked favorites in both and it said None in groups for both.
Lo and behold, that contact is still a ****ing favorite. Picture and all, no way to get them out. I go to contacts, go to groups, and wow, only 1 assigned to any groups, favorites, whose in favorites? the contact i just removed from favorites. No other way to turn favorites off anywhere else, i though ill try delete.
It deleted that contact from my facebook page, and also deleted that contact from my google account, and also deleted the contact from my contacts, when i go to groups, that contact is still there as a ****ing favorite! and that is THE ONLY place i can see the contact.
Way to go HTC,, keep on inbreeding your employees.
I wish I could better help you with the problem, this sounds very familiar. I'm almost certain I had the same issue a while back, no idea what rom I was using though. I'm just chiming in to verify that I did encounter this too.
Haven't seen it since it first happened, but this was so many flashes ago I couldn't give you any more details on the specifics behind it.

[Q] Contact Photos from Facebook

Does anyone know whether contacts on the One S that are linked to Facebook and using the profile picture, should have their pictures updated when the Facebook profile picture is updated?
Status updates seem to work, but pictures don't as far as I can tell.
I've tried searching for this problem and there seems to have been a lot of issues when Facebook changed their security options, but that was ages ago. There also seem to be a lot of solutions involving the "Facebook for HTC sense" account, but that doesn't seem to exist in the version of Sense on the One S.
How does it work now? Do the updates come from the Facebook account created when you sign in to Friendstream or to the official Facebook app?
Any help would be appreciated.
Alex
Anyone?
Does anyone actually have the Facebook contact photos updating? Or doe it simply not work?
Alex
Have you tried HaxSync yet? Cool thing about it is that it totally keeps quietly in the background, you can set when it should pull the HD contact pics from Facebook for synchronisation and (one option I really enjoy) it is capable of syncing the birthdays of your phone contacts which will then be integrated into the contact itself as well as your phone calendar. You wanna have status updates, too? Oh, it syncs them as well... ;-)
SecUpwN
HaxSync looks good, especially for non-Sense ROMs, but why do I have to pay for an app to do something that surely is meant to be part of Sense.
Also, how do they work together? If I use HaxSync to sync my contacts how do I stop it from conflicting with Sense's contact sync. Also, where do status updates appear? In Friendstream? In the contact itself?
How are contacts paired with the Facebook contact? Does it use the same mechanism as Sense does?
Alex
PS Back to my original question, has anyone got profile pictures updating using Sense?

That doesn't seem to help for me. Even pressing the sync button from within the Facebook App doesn't help.
I've also noticed another problem, which makes me wonder if the contact picture syncing is actually a Facebook issue; messages in my news feed in the Facebook app have the correct profile pictures, but if I look in the Friends list, some have old pictures.

If that is the case it could very well be a problem with facebook itself as you said.
Try to un-sync some random contact with a picture that didn't update itself and then link it to facebook again manually, see if that brings out a new current profile picture of that particular contact.

I've tried that before and it does work, but it's not a real solution.
I thought I'd give HaxSync a go anyway and it does seem to work quite well. The contact pictures are certainly higher resolution. Installing it also seems to have caused the Sense Facebook account to update all its pictures too. I'm not sure why that would happen.
However the pictures shown on the friends tab of the Facebook app are still incorrect. It's not as if some of them are recent changes either, at least a couple were changed weeks ago and they haven't updated.
I'll have to wait and see now what happens when a friend updates their picture. I expect the HaxSync version of the image to update, but the Sense version not to.
Weird

You have to edit the build.prop in system, I made a post somewhere on what to change in order to remove the legal restriction. I'll find it and edit this post when I get to a computer.
EDIT: I know this is part of what is causing the clickable links from contacts to be handled differently, your more than welcome to read the article but in a short summary Apple suid HTC over having direct linking from contacts to other account based links ( It's owned by Apple which means HTC had to comply in order to be able to sell the devices but here you go. I didn't find this but I did figure out how to get it to work for our device as it's in the build.prop differently. This will stop pics from adding to your contacts via facebook, thanks to apple!
I posted this fix over there as well but in Root Explorer go to "system/build.prop" and make sure to tap the box on the top right corner of the screen to "R/W" other wise this won't work, now copy the build.prop file to your download folder in "sdcard" and rename it ("build.prop.bak") for safe keeping and follow the instructions I posted below.
On line:"34" from the top of (system/build.prop)there is the first line named : "ro.da1.enable=true" make this line false and add the second line: "ro.da1.method=false" .
Now go to the bottom where it is listed as: "ADDITIONAL BUILD PROPERTIES" the third line is the same as above "ro.da1.enable=true"
so change this one also and add the second line again.
It should look like this:
ro.da1.enable=false
ro.da1.method=false
"ADDITIONAL BUILD PROPERTIES"
ro.da1.enable=false
ro.da1.method=false
Link posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27198692#post27198692 as posted this is for US consumers as this is passed legally here against HTC for linked contacts restrictions.
I'm confused. Are you saying that the mechanism for updating Facebook contact pics is controlled by the same booleans in build.prop as clickable links in SMSs? Does that mean that contact pics don't work at all for US users without making these changes.
Clickable links in SMS work fine for me (I'm in the UK), and contact pictures work the first time the account is added, but the problem is that they don't update when someone changes their profile picture.
