Skype & Captivate - Captivate General

Hello,
I found working Skype (Beta).
Maybe somebody needs it.
Chat works just fine.
Calls: Hm if you try to make a call to Skype contact it will calls local number and connect you with
your contact.
Give it a try.

That would be so cool if video chat worked!

OK, so how is this zip file loaded onto stock Captivate and then executed? Does it become a sideloaded app? Is it a Skype product? Discussed somewhere? Any info at all would be appreciated.

In the zip file you'll find .apk file. Copy it to you phone and install it.
The only problem with it your phone should allow you to install not market application.
Yes it is a skype product as far as I know.

It sounds like the Verizon Skype app which uses your minutes to call Skype contacts.

And if anyone had searched the forums you would see a thread from 5 weeks ago, with the file already posted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734338&highlight=skype

I've missed that post 5 weeks ago. I know, if I had bothered to search, I would have found it. But thanks to the OP for bringing this up. I've installed it and I will be using it for chat.
I came from WinMo 6.5 with Skype and it worked great with voice calls, chat and SMS feature (no video though). I used to send SMS internationally for only $0.10 when AT&T charges $0.25. Too bad. This new SkypeLite does not have SMS. At least I can chat. Thanks.

it seems like skype has actually come out with a real app for android phones!
...too bad the galaxy s isn't supported yet...
engadget.com/2010/10/05/skype-app-arrives-in-android-market-still-wifi-only/

FYI Galaxy S IS Supported if you are running 2.2 (Froyo.) Just did some 3g calls on my captivate froyo and it works awesome!!!

Why so big?
Wow. The Skype app (v1.0.538) on the Market is 8.56MB. Why so big? The APK file above (Skype Beta v1.0.5) is only 561KB. I have the beta installed. I don't use it for voice calls. Just chat. I wish they do outgoing SMS like they do in the WinMo 6.5 version.

Does this new "official" skype work with the Captivate? The version in the market says Galaxy S handsets are not supported?
This is for version 1.0.0.538 (8.56MB)
Edit: Not sure what the deal is, I just installed Skype, it installed fine. Went to log into my skype account and as soon as I hit the login button, it gave me an error about not being able to log in. Not sure if this is because skype is overloaded or if its software error on the Captivate (Galaxy S).

again let me be clear
SKYPE THEMSELVES Have said that skype WILL WORK RIGHT NOW On 2.2 Froyo Galaxy S devices. If your captivate is running froyo skype says that it will work fine on your galaxy S.
If your captivate is on 2.1 it wont load or will have problems.

The Skype (Beta) featured on the first post of this thread works with 2.1.
(But I just updated my Cap to Froyo anyway).

This new version of Skype only works over WIFI on your captivate. That is why you are getting the login error. Try again via wifi. Pretty lame if you ask me.

I tried over Wifi earlier on 2.1 - even airplane mode and wifi - browser works, skype still throws login error.
The official word from Skype is Galaxy S is not supported.

I was able to sign in when I first installed skype on Froyo. But after I rebooted the device later in the day, it does not let me sign in.

I went back to Beta. On my Cap Froyo, calling out doesn't work via WiFi or 3G (of course). I only use it for Chat. I'm in no hurry to use Skype. 2 stars.

Me too. What a pile of poo. The "Can't sign in" message returns so quickly that it has got to be a transport issue. Airplane mode with WiFi on doesn't make any difference.

[APP] Skype Lite
Hey folks,
I was going through this forum and saw a few people asking for Skype Lite. I found the apk on my G1 and thought i would put it here for you guys. If its against the rules feel free to remove it or let me know.
Vonapets
its on the market isn't it? sucks anyway
It's a chat only skype client... doesn't seem very functional to me
Skype Lite for Android sucks!! I prefer Fring cuz voice and text chat work great, even with Skype web clients...

yes, unforutnately fring is the only real skype platform that works - actually it's quite good, msn, yahoo and twitter integration
i just hate the fring user interface, and it sometimes re-downloads tweets all the time when switching cell towers (annoying)... seems it's not saving the chats/tweets locally
it's not the only one
nimbuzz support skype calls too, and i think its better in that area in comparison to Fring

yes, nimbuzz seems better, although lastly lacks in supporting skype..
i can't get Nimbuzz running.
when trying to call someone the app crashes. I get the waiting tone fine, but then it ends with a crash. can't even find out whats happening.
running aHero 0.5.2 ROM, don't know if that has something to say.
skype lite cause system instability to CM latest rom and force closed all the time.
nimbuzz and fring works great too, but nimbuzz seems use lot of battery life and cant show skype contacts when hiding offline ppl.
fring works great as nimbuzz, and use less memory and less battery draining . and can display both msn and offline skype ppl at the same list .
Here is the Verizon Skype APK's full client that was released this morning. I am sure this will be useful.
Thanks to Dino132!
Enjoy!
** Update **
Sorry for the confusion but this has the two correct files.
com.skype.android.verizon.zip - Came from /data/app
com.skype.android.verizon.apk - Came from /data/app-private
New Download
And.... Pushed both files to /system/app
Thanks man i've been looking for this.
Your welcome installing to Nexus now. I shared before trying myself.
Will post back
I don't think this is going to work for T-Mobile and AT&T customers.
Just pushed the two files but no go, will play some more
Code:
com.skype.android.verizon.zip
com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
Also renamed and pushed but still not showing in Launcher

Skype for Captivate

I am about ready to pull the trigger on a captivate, but was wondering if there is a skype app available for it?
I need to have it... WHen I checked the skype website under android phones there is a skype app but only for Verizon Phones.
Am I screwed?? no skype for Captivate
the skype people said it was coming this year.

I've been using iSkoot from the market. No video, but great for audio (uses cellular voice for voice chat).

Installs fine through the SDK...
Chat works fine with wifi.
But if you make a call, it always wants to dial through (813) 527-2000 regardless if you dialed a phone number or skype contact. So it always needs your cellphone voice service.
FYI, I was able to complete the call to an 800 number, and I'm on AT&T.
I didn't finish the test of calling a skype contact.
You can alos install Skyp through the market if you use Market Enabler and change to VZW ID. I am not sure if it is the same as the beta or not.
EDIT, the VZW one exits with message "Can only be used on VZW phones"
I downloaded Nimbuzz and Iskoot and they suck BIG TIME. Recently, I was looking around and I found Skype Lite Beta and It works great. It's not in the MARKET! I guess, if you have a rooted phone, you can download it...I don't! But you can remove the SIM card, turn on your wifi connection and scan the application right here androlib.com
Like I said earlier, it works just fine on my non rooted Samsung Captivate. Give it a try!

Actually there is a official version on Market
By the way.. Very old thread )
I tried the official version from the market and voice calls work fine but I want to use video chat. Has anyone got a confirmed version of Skype that works with video chat. The market version just gives me a black screen even when set to use the back camera

I had mild success with a different process. I was able to upload the app to Market and distribute it. However, it will only install on Android 2.1 devices, not Android 1.6 nor Android 2.2. The app is called "Meow (Free)"; which you can give it a try if you have Android 2.1.
I've detailed this process on a web page, but this system won't let me post a link here, even though I've joined a long time ago. You can probably find it by searching for the title, "Upload App Inventor Apps to Google Market", on Google. Maybe you can try this and we can share notes.

Ok. I took a break from the problem and developed a second app. Then I tested it on Android 1.6, 2.1, and 2.2. They all worked. I then uploaded it to Market and it worked as well. So there must be something inside the first app that the system didn't like. I don't know what, but I guess the process works.
The first app is titled "Meow (Free)". The second app is called "Three Little Pigs".

I'll those apps how do you think apps get famous? Through it's function? Features and stuff.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
how did you implement the LVL library ?
Ive followed a rough howto from some .it site and finally got it passed everything. when I hit publish tho it tells me "The copy protection feature will be deprecated soon, please use licensing service instead "
so you cant click to use or not use copy protection anymore ,until that's figured out app inventor apps wont be publishable anymore.
I just published one yesterday using apktool and the directions on the .it site for the most part. It takes patience, and a bit of thought.
I do have a question for anyone who may know the answer to this regarding App Inventor apps however.
When I decode an App Inventor app I use the -s parameter so that the source is not touched.
I would really like to be able to decode the source code too, so that I can add a couple things that are just not possible in App Inventor, and recompile.
I have tried to do this without using the -s parameter, but when I try to recompile I get a long list of errors similar to the list at the top of this thread.
Does anyone know if it is possible to do this with App Inventor apps? Any hints on what I need to do to get it working? If it is known that this is not possible I don't want to spend days trying to get something to work that just isn't possible. But, if it can be done I will spend the time it takes to figure it out.
Thanks.

Unable to download/update any apps! Please Help!

After I flashed the recently released gingerbread leak for the droid charge (ep4p) through Odin, I haven't been able to download or update anything from the android market. It gives me the error "[application name]" could not be downloaded due to an error. (-101) I've tried basically everything I could google/search on forums and nothing has worked. I also have flashed the new GummyCharged and Humble 5. I've tried;
Force closing/wiping data for Market, Download Manager, and Google Services Framework
Factory Resetting the phone
Wiping cache/dalvik cache
Reverting back to EP3HA 2.3.5 (which I was originally on and the market worked just fine)
"Fixing" my phone indicated by imnuts
I have noticed that associating a different google account to my phone enabled me to download apps again, but this is not helpful at all since all my contacts and purchases are associated with my original google account that I've been using. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated with this issue. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I tried installing apps from the android market on my computer, which works just fine. Only when I try to download the app on my phone does it give me the error.
Ok I was gonna suggest a few things but need to get things clear.
When you associate a different google account what were/are you running?
What were you running in the first place with your contacts etc?
Re read it a couple of times lol. You installed EP4P but was it from a DEV?
You might have to edit a file in the build.prop.
ro.build.model=sch-i510
Also there is a market fix .apk
Umm hmm So if you use your old google email and go to your maket / my apps it doesnt show anything?
Now Im confusing myself. Yeah so what were you running with the original contacts etc.. lol

did you clear the market app data/cache from application option in phone settings after you installed the new market? try clearing those and if possible unlink your google account from any google apps and clear those apps data/cache in settings as well then log in to all of them again and try downloading from the market
I had a similar problem where it did this on the deodexed/debloated EP4D.
Market always crashed right before download started.
I tried numerous things, but ended up Odining the ROM again. I started up the Market, signed in, let it do its thing. I recall it updated the Market.
I then built up from there with no issues.
I've had some annoying-ass problems with the Market before on different ROMs/kernels, tried all kinds of stuff, and just re-flashed to end the problem once and for all.
Have you tried to odin back to ee4 and accept the OTA for EP4? if it still has issues when bone stock the there is obviously some other underlying issue .

I'm currently having the exact same issue on a Galaxy Nexus.
To everyone who's suggested a solution, much thanks. It appears the problem resolved itself. After being frustrated for many hours about this I decided to set the problem aside and come back to it at a later time. After a few hours of letting my phone sit, I tried to download something for the hell of it and for some reason my market was functioning perfectly normal again. I don't understand why or how it happened, but it's like it never happened. To anyone trying to find a solution to this same problem, I can only hope the same happens to you as well. To be more exact, this happens on my Droid X as well, so I know it is something related to the Google account and NOT the device. It won't install ANY app; it doesn't matter WHAT it is.

I don't know if this is still true, but in the past people had market problems if google talk wasn't installed.

That HTTP error code 509 signals a bandwidth overage; to be more precise, the server will refuse the google account because you downloaded too much in a 24 hour window. This isnt just a google problem, i believe it is an Apache problem in general.
It is my first day with the phone and i have been downloading like crazy from it.
Same problem
Same problem on my Bionic and Xoom. Does anyone know what this 509's MB limit is or when it will expire?

I've had the problem for days now and didn't download much of anything before it happened...
Galaxy Nexus 4.0.1 ECL53F AR HD 1.3.3 stock kernel
I had the same issue on my Galaxy Nexus after flashing a custom rom. This is what I did to fix it.
Go to market.android.com and install an app from there to your phone.
However, if you are getting a 509 Error Code in logcat which is what I am experiencing right now, then you need to just wait until the bandwidth subsides.

[Q] google talk issues

I have tweak stock 1.4 and i am having issues with my Google talk app i can hear my friends when on voice or video chatting but they can't hear me,
Since i didn't try the app before installing tweak stock i don't know if that's to blame, please help

GTalk is outdated. Google moved Gtalk to Google+. You can download Google+ from the market, then use messenger feature to get video.
Don't use Gtalk, it's not stable at all
(same problem with google+)
I have this problem with google+ hangout (also the google talk app but I wasn't expecting that to work)
Also have tweak-stock installed (but it didn't work before I installed it either, so... yeah).
Does anyone else have this issue? Other apps work fine!
