i have the original 2.1 leak on my eris.. the one from hell, and i want to get A) root access, B) a recovery image to flash ROMs, and C) a stable and somewhat clear way to do that. I have tried everything and all sorts of bugs appear.. im getting very frustrated. If anyone could give me any sort of help, wonderful. and if anything, help me get root access.. i have 2.1 but have no idea how to allow root access. i do not have User Permissions either.
Think i may have fixed it.. I used the RUU unroot method, and it worked. im hoping now i can root, then flash roms on top of that.

I wasn't happy with all the background and idle apps that I couldn't kill or uninstall (I assumed I'd be able to control them somehow) that HTC/Sprint had continuously running on my EVO. Being new to Android, I found the solution to control this was to root the device and manually remove the applications. However, I forgot that there was an update on June 4. I'm unable to post a link to the site I used to root my phone, but it's on a site called htcevohackscom and involved rooting with an image, using recovery mode, backing up, wiping all the cache, and installing a rooted EVO ROM.
I canceled the upgrade Sprint tried to push to my phone. My question is, if I accept that upgrade or they eventually force it upon me, will that root method remain intact? My understanding of the unrevoked method is that you must run it every time the phone is restarted, and it is still restricted in some senses.
Feel free to educate me in anything I've said incorrectly.
I was wondering about that myself. I've been waiting to root mine until Froyo gets pushed. But I'm having terrible battery life and it pisses me off that things like the MP3 Store keeps launching itself and I can't uninstall it.
That said, is there an easy way to just switch to root and accomplish this? I don't mind root being temporary... I do mind puting a custom ROM on it just to get root access.
well i know on a g1 that once a custom recovery is installed root stays.
so i assume if someone makes a decent recovery image for the evo than you get your results.
i found a decent method here at xda under the evo's android development section, that includes a custom recovery
I tried searching and did not really find any answers that worked so I am asking for assistance.
I recently used Odin to move to 2.2 (/showthread.php?t=797282) and that went well. The only issue now is that I am trying to root, and cannot get that to work. I would like to use Cognition with all the nice tweaks.
I have tried to use the one click root /showthread.php?t=761751) which is what I used when I first got my captivate. Each time that I run this it gives me a error about a esignature failure and so it will not allow the fix to happen.
I then tried to use Odin 2.1 stock recovery (/showthread.php?t=731989) but I cannot get it to boot into the same recovery that I used to get it to 2.2. I hold the volume keys (up and down like before) and no pure recovery. I hold the volume+power and I get the option to reinstall as when I am rooting, and get the same errors.
I have tried to follow the directions here:/showthread.php?t=734163 to go back to stock, but I am sure that I am missing something.
I have tried removing the update.zip from the internal card (using Root Explorer) file from the device, rebooting, and then running the root attempt again.
I have Clockwork Rom Premium but cannot use it as it will not work without root.
I am at a loss, and would really appreciate the communities support. I am sorry if I missed something one searching, and feel free to point me to a thread I missed. I really just want to get the phone back to 2.1 and I can root and then put Cognition on it, or just 2.1 and I can root it and wait for ATT for the OTA to 2.2.
Thank you in advance for assistance.
ps.. sorry for the /showthread= links. System would not let me post full urls.
RESOLVED!
UPDATE:::
I was able to get the 2.1 stock Odin to work and now I am on 2.1 with Root again.
Just so you know, at the moment clockwork recovery doesnt work wit 2.2. If you wanted to get to clockwork while using a 2.2 rom you have to make sure the clockwork update.zip is on your sdcard then use odin to flash a 2.1 kernel. Kind of a pain but it works.

Just so you know the issue with using the update.zip or clockworkmod is the phone, when in 2.2, requires a signed update.zip; the old update.zip and the one that clockworkmod uses is not signed for 2.2; so you cannot root or modify with any of the update.zip methods. There is a longer process to root a 2.2, but if you are going to cog 2.2, you don't need to worry about it.
just installed gingerbread on my htc desire hd. and now my root has gone. i know VISIONary wont work on this yet so is there any other way to gain root access??
Hard to say. Sometimes official updates are designed by the carrier along with the manufacturer to disable any root access. If it was an update that required a wipe first, then definitely root will be lost.
Sometimes it's better to find a ROM that has a great reputation for frequent updates and stick with them, however, if you've lost root thanks to the latest update then you may be waiting a while for someone to figure out how to root this latest update to your phone unless you made sure to get something on there like RA that will let you wipe the phone and restore from a previous nandroid backup.
Gingerbreak...
hey could u please explain to me how u installed the gingerbread on ur htc desire hd...i have an unrooted one so idk if its possible to install the new gingerbread RUU but my downgrading process keeps failing (CID Error). I've got my phone running on 1.84.720.3...if you could please help me I would really appreciate it.
However, I've read around the forum and people are claiming that you can reroot your phone with Gingerbreak. Im not sure exactly how..im really new to this but im sure you can find out how to use gingerbreak by searching for it...

you mean the CID on making a gold card. how are you making the gold card?? with hex editing or with a software that does it for you?? i found i had the same problem so i used a hex editor, then worked first time. whats your email, i will send you all the links i used
finally got it to work. Now officially running gingerbread have u tried to gingerbreak? Also is there anyway to restore the applications from the SD card to the phone without the apk file?
well im not quite sure about the apps as i havent really messed around with it myself yet :/ i have tried doing the gingerbreak but came across a few problems, but i will carry on and keep trying how did you manage to sort your CID issue??
Yeah finally got the goldcard to work haven't tried to gingerbreak yet...not sure if its worth rooting since I already have gingerbread with sense running...any reason I should root?

Hi, i got my first android and i´m VERY happy with it.
Although, i still want to make two things to make it better. Eliminate bloatware and update to gingerbread.
My confusion is that, to eliminate bloat i know i must ROOT, but should i root BEFORE updating or AFTER updating?
I have another doubt, will rooting affect functions of my phone like serving as a AP (access point) or any other???
Note: i do have the SGH-T959V (T-mobile´s) BUT it is unlocked and as i live abroad i´m using it with another telco. (Will rooting or updatind affect my conectivity to my other telco?)
THANKS in advance
Xavier
You need to first root in order to install a custom recovery, then the root should persist across different ROMs you flash.
I only encountered one ROM where I lost root after flashing, but I think that is rare.
Can ROOT be undone???
After the device has been rooted, if somethings comes out wrong, can i UNROOT it? and leave the phone as brand new???
Thanks
Yes, but I don't know how for the SGS4G.
For my Huawei U8100 it was as simple as reflashing the stock ROM, but for the SGS4G I don't think it is that easy. The closest thing to a stock ROM I found was a rooted stock ROM.
flash a stock rom with odin and use superoneclick root to unroot the phone. simple at that.
Subject pretty much says it all.. I'm familiar with various flashing, rooting, and recovery methods, but I haven't found a way to get back to the original bootloaders after I've loaded the newer ones for GB..
any thoughts?
I haven't heard of anyone going back to the froyo bootloader is there a reason that you want to. Bootloaders are something most don't like to mess with

well, to be honest I may be barking up the wrong tree..
Over the last few days I've been playing with various custom ROMs, as well as flashing back to stock repeatedly. In the course of all of this experimentation a couple of strange issues have arisen..
First, after running CM7 for a few hours I flashed back to Froyo/stock. At that point my phone decided that GMT was the only time worth displaying, despite my location clearly not being Western Europe... Additionally, I'm now completely unable to gain root on the stock froyo ROM. SOC will complete successfully, and says I have root, but nothing requiring root works. SuperUser is installed, but never prompts for permission. I get 'permission denied' when I try SU in a terminal..
So, the only thing I can think of that hasn't been reverted back are the bootloaders.. I'm curious if there's a compatibility issue between froyo and GB, and wanted to test that theory.
I'm not sure what's going on with your root maybe try doing a factory reset once you get back to stock just know that it will delete your SD cards ext. And internal I have been on gb bootloaders since they came out and have went to stock many times and have never had that problem

sounds like a corrupt su binary sometimes happens when soc fails and sometimes happens when you update the binary and the kernel init.rc script overwrites it with the old binary again( thats the trouble with voodoo kernels now that there are su updates). once the binary is corrupt it can be a pain to fix even if you are shell rooted in the kernel because for some reason even after deletion of the file it doesnt always get removed. i had this trouble with my infuse and a vm intercept and in bouth cases only a reflash fixed it. I don't know about the clock. try flashing stock again and root. also why root the stock Rom anyway? are you gonna run it that way? if not use Odin to flash the defuse or community kernel. that would actually root the phone but technically you don't need to be rooted in the first place to flash a rom just need cwm and a kernel that has a non secure shell.
about the bootloaders there should be no reason to revert, if you want to reset the counter just flash param.ifs from the unbrick package. but if you must then the bootloaders were dumped by a long gone dev names lost1 but nobody tested them. good luck if you try it!
I wouldn't mess with it. You can really mess up your phone.

I managed to get things back to "normal" today. The time still isn't quite right when running Froyo ROMs, but at least I was able to get root back and flashed to UCKL2 w/ root and fixed video.
As far as messing up my phone.. well, that's what insurance is for. ;-)
