[Q] General questions about windows mobile - General Questions and Answers

I am not a windows mobile user but I have some general questions about windows mobile in general.
Is there 'fragmentation' in the windows mobile space like that of android ? (different phones running different versions). If so may i know what these version numbers are.
Thanks alot.

Yes and with winmo its not as stable. There might be some fragmentation with android buts all three newer android phones are at least running android 2.1. You'll find with android things are only going up with android. Meego is also another one that is going to be good once it gets out on some decent handsets.

What are the version numbers currently in the handsets in the market?
Are they all compatible with each other? (application written for the older version will also work on the newer version)

Never gonna happen.
You'd have to be a heathen for even suggesting such a thing
Of course it's possible, but you won't find any developer who will port it. If you really want to have Android and WM on your phone buy an HD2

Dear all,
I know that's possible to install Android on many WM phones, however I'd like to know about reverse operation. Recently there are many android phones with strong hardware in market, so it would be interesting to see how wm works on these phones. although I think most of the time new versions of microsoft software looses many basic needs and get worse than before, I still prefer WM to android. I have checked Desire HD, but its UI, i.e. android was too confusing to me!
I don't know, I know a lot of people who used wm and android and they think Android is much easier to use and provides more (including me). On the other hand I understand what you would like to know. I have a Spica and I'm curious about how it would work with WM as the older phones have weaker hardware then mine and Android is a bit laggy sometimes, but I would NEVER change my os to WM (and while developers think like me we won't have WM on Android phones).

Android

Anyway to get android in these phones?

Why not just buy an Android phone? Plus the new ones have better hardware than the WP7 phones. That's an odd request.
The straight answer to your question is you can't do it.
Answer: no
Take your Windows Phone 7, put it up for sale...
Get a Android phone and go to the Android fourms.
If there was a way to dual boot with Android, I'm sure by a simple search you would find it. Assuming that you didn't do that (there was a post about this subject just yesterday)
That sucks. Why is it the hd2 can, yet wp7 cant? I understand there on different operating systems, but developers cant make a duel booting device like the hd2?
Wasnt the hd7 tinkered with to run android awhile back?
Sorry i dont browse this section of XDA.

The HD2 was a winmo 6.5 device, the hacking community already had years of experience with that OS. WP7 isn't a year old yet, that's pretty easy to understand.
Like DavidinCT says, sell your phone, buy Android and use their forums.

The HD2 was based on a completely different Windows Mobile 6.5. WP7 is still yet to receive a HSPL bootloader that allow custom roms to be installed or a MAGLDR-like system for dualboot, while HSPL for Windows Mobile was achieved long ago. The HD7 android is still in a pre-alpha stage and the average modder on XDA would probably brick his device trying to flash it. Seriously, if a dual boot was released, it would be all over these forums. I know it may be hard, but next time, scroll up, find the white textbox with a large yellow magnifying glass, type in Android on WP7, and watch the magic happen.
Back then, when hd2 just came out...there werent really that much smartphones with 4.3in screens and 1ghz android phones...so there was a lot of interest on developing android for the hd2...but you got plenty of android phone now with that kind of hardware and better...like everyone else said...sell the winmo phone and buy an android phone...

The best Smartphone OS

For my opinion is the best OS for a smartphone: Android free to mod, open source. Not iphone (too narrow), not windows whatelse, ugly tiles ...
I vote for WP. The most responsive of all because all grafics takes place in GPU.
I vote for android os you can thansfer files on pc even without itunes

+1 on Android for sure!
Windows is pretty horrible for phones and Iphone's are way too restrictive. Android is my vote.
Android is the best, but phone is very important to update android version. Some phones are new, but after 6 months they do not give a support for os.
Hmmm, good question. The iOS is a decent OS since it is all optimized but you do not have the freedom to modify it and all. The Android is a more tech-savvy OS. It has the most freedom to modify and customize with ROMs, launchers, etc.
Android, hands down... anybody that says IOS is a better OS has no idea what they're talking about... here, show the Isheep this, maybe it'll spark a light at the end of the tunnel for them... I myself had no idea ios was this bad until I read this article...

In terms of speed then the QNX (Micro kernel) platform from which BlackBerry 10 is built is unrivaled by Android or iOS6 (Monolithic Kernel). The closest architecture is Windows NT which is a hybrid platform. The drawback is the lack of applications on BB10 though the compatibility layer which allows Android apps to run may strengthen it's base and buy time for developers to develop more native apps.
There is more than one Os (Android) HAHA LOL..... Think Ubuntu phone is going to be dubbed the new king in the near future.....
The best OS can be seen via my avatar.
But truth be told the OS is yet to be created by Google.
I've only used android. There is a lot to like. WP8 seems to catch my eye and has some nice features but haven't used it.
Android all way easy to mod and change. Alot of good apps and easy to transfer files to or from the device without having to use a specific program.

Obviously Android is the best. It is open source and the best to mod. For all the common people the important thing is a great number of apps and you can only choose beetween Android and iOS, but Android devices are cheaper than an iPhone and they are more customizable.
Android hands down!

Droid ever
AW: The best Smartphone OS
Android. Even if your phone doesn't get updatet officially there is still a chance of a nice custom mod.
I have to say, as a noob I am hughly suprised of the large variety of OSs for one device.

Does Android have future?

I just bought the HTC Desire X, but I know nothing about Android. And I am wondering, is it good to start learning about Android operating system? Does it have future, or it is like wm, which will "die" in the future? What is your opinion?
And if I will decide to start learning Android, it is necessary to have linux (Ubuntu - Debian etc) on my desktop or I can work on windows 7 - 8?
Thank you.
Android is like herpes. It's for life!

WM never really hit the mainstream; mostly people who needed the functions of using the computer away from home, to check emails or are just plain geeky.
Android however, is in the hands of even the most technologically illiterate people, it has spread that much. There's a huge chance that android will last for the next few years, provided there is no new competition that takes over. It's going to take something huge to replace the OS that powers most of the world's handsets. Perhaps a revolutionary phone product or even more competition from alternative OSes.
Years ago, the same was thought about Symbian. People thought that it could last for a very long time, it seemed to be the ideal phone OS until the iPhone came by and changed how people used their phones. Now, despite a quick struggle in the touchscreen era with Symbian s60v5 and Symbian Belle, Symbian is pretty much dying.
I hope in fact I'm sure the android IS the future...
Developers keeps Android alive
Yes I think. It would be growing thanks to its open platform.
For the next 10 years or so
Cos it's based on Linux

I think Google will keep Android relevant for years into the future. Firefox and Ubuntu are trying to come up with open source mobile OS's as well but they will have a lot of catching up to do to get to where Android is now as far as market share and apps. WM died because Microsoft let it become outdated. It had basically the same UI for years and didn't adapt in time to newer hardware like capacitive screens, plus it was terribly insecure. Some people complain about android, but its very secure compared to WM where any app basically had admin (the windows equivalent of superuser) privileges.
No other mobile os can beat android and it may become like java in the future....

I think that there is a better chance that the apple IOS will be dead long before Android.

Since Android is based on Linux and it's open source, it will not go away anytime soon.

[Q] best Windows phone to run Android ROM?

I had a great experience installing an Android ROM on an HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile several years ago. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for newer Windows phones that also have good Android ROMs available?
I would like to upgrade to a newer phone from my HD2 and can't help but notice that the Windows phones are always available VERY cheaply on Craigslist. All those Microsoft subsidies make these phones very attractive for the money. I just don't want to run Windows on them.
So, which Windows phone should I buy with the express intent of replacing the built-in OS with an Android ROM?
As far as I know there aren't any windows phone devices with Android roms.

There are certainly ROMs available for some Windows phones. I have successfully installed an Android ROM on my HTC HD2 which was sold as a Windows phone. I personally wiped out Windows mobile when I installed the Android ROM. So I know that such things are possible.
The question is for which additional Windows phones are Android ROMs available?
The HD2 was windows mobile which is an entirely different thing than windows phone which you asked about. What kind of device you want Android on? Windows mobile: there a few phones with possibilities of Android with the HD2 having the best hardware. Windows phone: not possible at this moment.

Why buy a windows phone to put android on it anyway? Now I getctge nokia lumina that's things hot lol but just get a android phone

The HD2 is the best phone that can run Android when it wasn't meant to. It was shipped with Windows Mobile which is entirely different to WP. WP is very nice and if it had a better app selection I would seriously consider making a switch, but WinMo was atrocious for non-power users. If price is what you're concerned about then just buy a N4 which is pretty much a great phone (depending on what categories you look at) for an amazing price.
