Vibrant gets JI5 update through Kies! - Captivate General

So the Vibrant is getting an update to JI5 through Kies. They say it's a GPS fix. I wonder if it's the same kind of 'GPS fix' that we got, or it's the GPS FIX that we want to get...

GPS fixes only last a couple days.

I've seen alot of post about fixes and people whose phones work when they get them. If you read all the threads, you will find that many people test there GPS and it works. I was one of those. However, with a couple hours of GPS use every day for a couple days it stops working. Then you can reset the phone, or clear the GPS data or make some other changes and it will work again... for a couple more days.
The fix I want to see, is where it fixes the GPS and it stays fixed for days, and then weeks and then months of actual GPS use.
I suspect every Captivate has this problem. I have yet to hear someone post that they have used their gps, driving miles every day with it, and it works fine after a week. Is there anyone who is really using their GPS, say 30 miles a day and it's still working properly after a week? Without resets or fiddling with the setting?
C
(I want a Captivate again, but will wait until the GPS is really fixed...)
I justed posted my fix in the sticky and been testing for a couple of days now... Consistent results.... Key is the accuracy number and using GPS Test App from the Market
Slider, I don't see many confirmations of your "fix". And tell, me how many hours have you navigated in your car with this? Sadly... without a bit more data I don't yet believe your claim. Its easy for the GPS to look like it works OK for a couple minutes. Try driving with it for 30 minutes a day...
GPS is broken regardless of what settings you change or apps you install. The only fix will be a firmware update from samsung. Unless its a hardware problem, which it still can be. There is no such thing as a Captivate with working GPS.
Why does this firmware fix have to come from Samsung? Why couldnt it come from any developer? Samsung released the full Captivate source code back on 7/30. I wouldve assumed by now, this GPS issue wouldve been fixed...

I agree completely. No one has really shown that the GPS actually works for more than a couple days of solid navigation use.

Source code does not contain chip firmware.

Why is it up to xda minds to fix Samsung's $%&* up? I have a feeling that xda dev's aren't pressing the captivate for development because of these out of the box problems Samsung released with the phone.
It's a lot harder to create custom roms, let alone create a custom rom and fix a phone-wide issue.
Chat with Samsung
The usual line from Samsung. Interesting claims for a fix on the Epic / Fascinate. Will be curious how that really turns out. I could happily buy one of those if those GPS work...

Visitor: When will Samsung release an update to fix the GPS problems with the Captivate?
Dan: Hi, Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: Hi Dan. When will Samsung release an update to fix the GPS problems with the Captivate?
Dan: I understand that you need to have information about GPS issue on Captivate.
Dan: I will provide you with information on my end.
Dan: Samsung Mobile is aware that under certain conditions, the GPS on our U.S. Galaxy S devices may not be meeting performance expectations. We are diligently evaluating the situation and will provide an update as soon as possible.
Visitor: Hmmm...
Visitor: How about the new Epic... will it be fixed on that phone at release?
Dan: I am positive that we will not have issue with GPS on Epic.
Visitor: I returned my Captivate, and am thinking that maybe the GPS will work better on the Epic or Fascinate, since they are newer... Can you confirm that these will be "fixed"?
Dan: Unfortunately we cannot confirm that issue will be fixed without release of product .
Dan: However as devices are being released we should not have any issue on the phones.
Visitor: Ok, I'll wait and see what people say on the various forums.
Dan: Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
Dan: Thank you for all the cooperation and understanding in the chat session.

The code drop didn't contain the chip firmware etc - nothing I could put my hands on so I could see what the hell the driver was doing. It is hard enough to just find the data on what chip it is using (it seems to be a new Broadcom chip, which makes me hope that there is just a bug in the driver - Broadcom wouldn't release a non-working chip would they? ).
-Atin
The GPS chip is Broadcom BCM4751. According to what I read, Broadcom is working on or already had a driver fix. It's on Samsung's plate to test and release the fix now.

Conversation with Tech Support

Hope this helps ease some concerns:
Alice : Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Michael Vazquez: I was trying to download the OTA update and the process works out fine until it reboots and tries to apply the update
Michael Vazquez: It fails at 50%
Alice : I understand your concern.
Alice : Please allow me to explain this for you.
Michael Vazquez: Okay
Alice : There is no official release of the update over Samsung website and the update Over the air may corrupt the handset software.
Alice : Please do not update the software update OTA.
Michael Vazquez: Can we update via USB?
Alice : Once the update is released for download over the website, you can download the same update via USB..
Michael Vazquez: When will the update be released?
Alice : I apologize; There is no specific ETA mentioned for the release of the software at this moment, once the release is official you can find it on Samsung website.
Michael Vazquez: Okay, thanks.

Stella: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Keith: hello
Keith: i heard of the captivate update via ota
Keith: when i go to do a manual software update
Keith: my phone goes to make a connection and then stops saying there was a communication error
Keith: and cannot connect to att servers
Keith: I have driven around to 5 different cell towers in a 20 mile radius and i continue to get the same message
Stella: I request you not to update the phone manually.
Keith: I need this update badly to fix the poor gps
Stella: The update has not been officially released.
Keith: ok
Keith: so what can you do for me?
Stella: You will get the notification over the air if it is released.
Keith: I have a friend who received the notification
Keith: and he was able to update
Keith: there is also an ATT bulletin on their website saying the update is available
Keith: i can get you the link
Stella: Did he get the notification on the phone?
Keith: yes
Keith: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/solutionDisplay.jsp?solutionId=KB110797
Keith: read the bottom
Stella: Thank you.
Stella: However, did you get the notification on your phone?
Keith: i did not get a notification
Keith: but i should be able to at least check for a software upgrade? it won't even let me do that
Keith: the direct message is the following
Stella: That is the reason, I request you not to manually update the phone.
Stella: I understand.
Keith: the red and white arrow comes up
Keith: and then it says
Keith: "communication failed"
Keith: "unable to communicate with the AT&T server
Stella: I understand.
Keith: regardless of the update... why can't my phone connect?
Stella: Thank you for the information.
Stella: However, please do not update the phone as you haven't received the notification on your phonne.
Keith: is there something i can do about my gps performance?
Stella: phone*
Stella: Are you getting any error messages when connecting to GPS?
Keith: gps takes minutes to get a lock and then it has me 500 yards from where i should be
Keith: it is very inaccurate even with the network assitance on
Stella: Is the phone charged to full?
Keith: yes and it is plugged in my car
Stella: Did you try to connect in the clear sky view?
Keith: and has a brodit mount, which is in my windshield with a direct shot to the sky
Keith: i have tried it at my local park where there is no trees... there it has me jumping around all over the place
Stella: I am sorry to know that.
Keith: I am on the road 60% of the time and rely on the gps.
Keith: i end up using the directions feature in google maps to get me where i am going because the gps is so poor.
Stella: From the Home screen, touch Application>> Settings >> Location
Stella: and security.
Stella: Touch Use GPS satellites to disable and tap on it again to enable the GPS satellite.
Keith: I have tried that and it doesn't help
Keith: it is rumored that this "update" is supposed to make the gps more responsive
Keith: and accurate
Stella: Once remove and reinsert the battery after that and then check for the result.
Stella: Once remove and reinsert the battery after that and then check for the result.
Keith: have tried that as well
Keith: it is consistently not accurate
Keith: I am thinking of returning the phone and going with another android phone
Stella: Samsung continues to listen to customer feedback on GPS performance expectations on launched Galaxy S devices. We are currently testing software updates, which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks.
Keith: next few week? you got 9 days until october
Stella: I understand your concern.
Stella: However, There is no specific ETA mentioned for the release of the software at this moment.
Stella: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Keith: i will not update the phone if it does become available. I am not sure how an "unreleased update" got through the cracks
Keith: and makes me question samsung, which isn't good because all my televisions and appliances are samsung
Keith: if and when i do get an update, i will come back here to see if it is "official"
Keith: thanks for your help
Wow krad, that conversation looked like they were pressing buttons for canned responses, not actually typing to you.
Thanks to both of you for sharing, eases my mind. I'll wait till I get a notice and go from there.
From the phone on an app
What I don't understand is why If we are prompted to receive the update ota we aren't supposed to update?? And if there really wasn't an official update why in the world engadget claims to have received word that the official gps fix began rollout today from both samsung and att... This is getting stupid...

LOL I got the same "Alice". Basically told me the same thing about there not being an official update. I had asked then why I could use the update option in the phone and receive this fictitious update but it fail. She just repeated her canned response.
Their "support" sucks ass.
Ok stupid question for the next person who plays support roulette. How are US customers to install over USB since Kies is officially not released for the US?
why shouldnt I update OTA? I already did... but why would they say not to
Okay, I just got off the phone with Samsung Tech Support. I explained to the girl that I downloaded the update but it failed and then later it wouldn't download at all. Long story short, she told me Samsung hasn't released any firmware for the Captivate and anything I got must have been from AT&T and not Samsung. This conversation occured about 10 minutes after I spoke to AT&T and they told me that Samsung handles the updates. This whole situation is like a joke.

"GPS + other improvements for Samsung ATT Captivate are HERE! Today - next few weeks OTA notification will be sent to customers! #GalaxyS"
from samsung mobile usa's twitter http://twitter.com/samsungmobileus
out of curiosity, how many people actually got notifications today legitimately? Did everyone move the date up to force the install? I doubt thats the case but this might explain why they are either playing dumb, or have no clue?? Just a thought

When I turned on my phone this morning, it automatically told me an update was available. I did not have any problems, just a long wait at 50% and another long wait at the Galaxy S screen when it was rebooting. The wait was long enough I started getting worried.

Yeah same thing here. It was around 2 mins for the 50% and around 1 min at the Galaxy S screen. Not a long time by real world standards but when you are thinking your phone is in the process of bricking it seems like an eternity.
@krad the reason your getting communication error because your task killer it's killen device management icon with two arrow red and blue reboot your phone and make sure your nothing its killed.

Any non-contract phones ?
Guys I have been following XDA for a long time, never had a chance to post. I have a non-contract ATT Captivate without ATT 3G service. I have asked Samsung about how I should upgrade to JH7 and they have no clue. Can I update to this on Wifi ? or is a 3G service mandatory ?
Is anyone here in a case like me ? Please help guys

This is not the reason. I just checked the logs using Dalvik Debug Monitor
When you manually check for an update it looks like the phone sets up a special APN for checking updates...and you see the 3G/E icon start showing data activity. Using HTTPS, its attempts to connect to a server which I assume stores the update. The HTTP response code that is returned is 403, which is means the connection was "Forbidden". This is the reason for the communication error.
I assume, the connection is "Forbidden" because your SIM/IMEI number has not been provisioned for the update yet.
Also there is another way to reset the update timer. When you run a manual check for the update, it saves the current time stamp to /dbdata/databases/com.wssyncmldm/wssdmdatabase.db. The manual update process will not run if you are within the 24 hour window of this timestamp. If you delete this file and reboot your phone, your timer is reset.
Strange. There is nothing in my /dbdata/ folder at all.

Strange, I do not even have a dbdata folder. Where are you seeing that?
I actually got the notification tried to update and couldnt connect to the server + it started doing the update automatically. No taskiller
Sorry, I should mention you must be rooted. Also, I used adb to gain visibility into these folders. For some reason, I wasn't able to using Astro...it just showed an empty /dbdata/ directory.

few quick questions..[ROM Q's/Stock]

Ok i got my Captivate.. 3 days after release... ordered it the night it went on sale on AT&T website and got it that tuesday.. ANYWAYS i played with it a bunch and played with the the GPS setting tring to get it to work better... not much luck.. or i ran the OCLF root/lagfix. It was doing fine never had any of the shut down problems that poeple have talked about.. then the FOTA patch was coming out and i wanted to get it so i undid the lag fix so that wouldnt be a problem then ran ODIN3 to get back to stock unrooted state so i could update (this was before anyone knew if there would be any issues with updating while rooted).. only after i did the odin3 did i find out THAT would prevent be from doing the FOTA update
So now i'm sitting on my Captivate with ODIN3 stock.. unrooted and all...
SO here my questions... LOL
Cognition thats it add to the phone? i havent been able to find a list of things that are different..
having done the odin3 1clk (not the full wipe) can i still use teh OCLF to root without any issues?
Reinstalling apps isnt that big of a deal.. appbrain has them all listed so i can just reinstall from there no problem..
Also i live in a EDGE only area so the HSUPA part of Cognition is worthless to me..

GB OTA in Arizona

Has anyone in Arizona received the GB OTA update yet? I used the LG tool, but my wife's has still not updated. Same goes for a few friends with the G2x.
Yes i live in phoenix and i got the OTA GB update on 7/27/2011
I did a manual check for updates and i got it.
not even sure if they are still rolling them out, cause of all the complaints and issues still. do this *#*#2432546#*#* that will check you in for the update, and you can go see if it's starting to download or not through the settings.
Thanks guys I'll try that.
EDIT: ok it checked me in, but I didn't notice anything else (although it told me that I had some apps that needed to be updated). Where do I find out in settings if it is downloading? I went to the about phone >software update and it is giving me the conection failed message. I used to get "upto date already".
Are you on a good connection or wifi? Can't remember if wifi messes with it or not haven't done an ota update since the g1... try on 4g no wifi.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I have tried both, but mainly 4g.

version 2.3.6 help

Ok guys so you all know about 2.3.6, well I have been manually checking everyday for about a month and still don't have it, does anyone have any advice for me?
ATT pulled the OTA 2.3.6 update two weeks after making it available OTA.... speculation being it was only provided for a select IMEI range. That said, you can peruse the I727 Development section for either the stock 2.3.6 tar or custom 2.3.6 ROM... but you'll have to flash it via ODIN or CWM Recovery.
There has also been speculation that the update was pulled because it was causing problems on some people's phones. I heard the claim that it was only for select phones (by IMEI number), that needed the update, but that explanation also said it only affected 3,000 phones--seemed to me that it was available to everyone who tried to get it when it was available.
I think it's more likely that there are issues with the 2.3.6 update (I experienced problems with bluetooth and a few other issues after the update, which may or may not have been the cause).
My advice is to stick with a 2.3.5 rom--there really wasn't much different with the 2.3.6 update and if there are potential issues with it you might as well stick with 2.3.5 roms (I've been digging NexusMod personally: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426590 )
I downloaded and applied the 2.3.6 update to my SGS2 Skyrocket. Haven't noticed any real difference, except for a bug in screen dimming, usually with low battery levels (which I cannot recall if it existed prior to the update or not).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
Umm, I have 2.3.6 and am having issues w/ reliably reconnecting w/ my Jabra Cruiser2 (BT speakerphone) in my car. I was thinking this is a Jabra issue, and not Samsung.
Can someone confirm if 2.3.6 is truly causing BT connection issues?
I see no need for it.
