better headset than default (or usb->minijack converter)

Hi,
The sound in the headset that comes with the Trinity is quite bad and I really want to get a better one. Does anyone know if there is anyone making good headsets (prefferrably in-ear earbuds) or alternatively a plug converter such that I can use my normal headset with the usb plug on the trinity.

the mini usb to 3.5mm converter just have a problem doesn't support microphone function...
need to remove every time you receive a call...

the oem headset's sound quality is really bad, but i recognized that you can turn music much louder than older devices like my old wallaby

on expansys search for ORA usb to jack converter. there's a version that has a microphone.

I don't know if it's going to work or not, I'll post and let everybody know when I recieve it. The reason I opted for a 2.5mm headset is because I have like 3 of them lying around because my old phone used a 2.5mm and I didn't want them to go to waste.. if it doesn't work or if the sound quailty sucks I'll give a motorola mini usb headset a try.

I can tell ya ahead of time that this will not work. The moto pinouts are different from the HTC proprietary pinouts. You need to get one made for HTC phones.

why not just cut off the unwanted earpiece....
anyone managed to open the mic box on the stock headset? does it just have snap locks or is glued? I would break it open, but the operative word would probably be Break. I was considering just changing the ear phones over to some expensive ones to improve sound quality without losing the mic and usb connection.

edit: no glue, just snap locks. Push in on the walls of the mic box on the large bit, (the bit with the button in it). slide ya fingernail into the gap an prise the top small piece off. Caution the small top piece has small pins in it so pull it straight up and not to the side.
remove old earpieces and solder new ones on, its even got L- L+ R- R+ labelled for ya.
I havent actually progressed to the attaching of new phones yet, will pick some up over the weekend mebbe.

Earplugs with mic+controls

I've been looking online for earplugs with controls to answer calls and to skip tracks in the music player. Most of the ones I've been have only been for the iPhone or iPod, does anyone know if these will work?

It's surprisingly quite small and compact, button and mic are good quality. I have headphones which came with a short cord + extension (Denon AH-C751), so using this makes the cord length just right.
The smarttalk got a lot of bad reviews because the edges of the plastic parts would damage the cable over time, but the version I got has rubber sheaths where the cable connects with the plastic - it seems Griffin listened to feedback on that one. Still, I can't vouch for the reliability, but so far so good.

Not op, but I have an issue with them.
The mic is already screwed up and one of the casings is about to fall apart.
I am willing to spend around 80 € on a pair of headphones with controls plus a microphone. Like OP said most of the ones available are for the iPhone but I heard somewhere with some application installed you could use those for an Android powered phone as well?
The Griffon solution is really not that sexy, I would love a complete solution instead.

so just to get this right you use this griffin adapter with your htc desire to:
1 - answer calls
2 - hands free and speak through microfone
3 - cycle through music tracks and pause music

I read somewhere else that iPhone headphones with built in controls work fine on the Desire.
As I already own a pair of Klipsch S4 cans which are fantastic I looked on eBay for an iPhone adaptor that plugs inline with the headphones. Cost less than a fiver delivered.

Double tap the button to skip a track. I thought 3x click skipped backwards, but it doesn't work, at least not with cyanogen mod 6. Long press also takes me to the music app when phone is unlocked, but this might be a CM thing as well. I
Never tried to take a call with the button, but there's no reason it wouldn't work if @MARK's earphones can.
Also, djtosh, sorry about not replying - I haven't been checking this part of the forum. It's been answered anyways:

I don't know how you feel about using wireless bluetooth options, but I searched long and hard some time ago looking for exactly the same thing and found nothing with the right functionality - ie. that worked on par with the factory earphones.

I like them because I can use whatever quality earphones I want, they sync via bluetooth and the remote control part therefore just clips onto you wherever you like (shirt collar for use of mic for instance).
Has play, pause, skip forward and back tracks, fast forward and rewind, and volume control. Also has the hang up / call button and mute mic function. The display should have theoretically have shown song title but it doesn't. Works great with doubletwist and default music player in android.
Tons of battery life and uses same charging connector as Desire.

Replacement Earbuds (with microphone)

I'm looking to replace these stock earbuds.... they sound ok but the build quality is horrible and after 5 months of fairly heavy use the connector is already starting to separate.
Any suggestions? I want something with the same "stuff in" type feel, but something that's actually a decent price. I'm seeing a lot of $100+ klipsch and Skull Candy / Beatz or whatever the **** they're called.
Not interested in either of those gimmicky brands (dr. dre beatz or skull candy) but I could justify splurging on a Klipsch set if it was worth it.... looking for something a bit cheaper though lol

2 days later.... I'm starting to get the impression I'm the only one who ever used the stock earbuds.

I have both, and found them via head-fi.org forums.
Both of these earbud headsets puts the stock one to shame. I prefer these over bluetooth headsets due to radiation emitted via Bluetooth as well as the phone by itself. Only disadvantage of these earbud/headphones is no active noise cancellation. (eg. a Bluetooth Plantronics Voyager Pro's noise canellation is a LOT better, especially in a car, bus or noisy environment, unfortunately not sure if the bluetooth signal itself is bad (long term) since it's right next to your skull.

If you want DECENT headphones (Good sound, Good build quality), you're gonna have to get a DECENT brand. Right now, beats are the best you can get (opinion), and skull candy's are DECENT, and not too bad of a price. Look on amazon, i got some 80$ skull candy's for 15 dollars and they're AMAZING

I don't know about any with a microphone, but get some Klipsch's! I own a pair of S4's, and they are the best earbuds I've ever had.
I don't think you will regret buying these things, and I will honestly say your music will come alive with these things.
I do believe they have a model of the S4's which has a microphone, but i'm not sure if they would work with the Epic, call them up and find out.
oh, I got my S4's around 60 bucks when they were on sale from vanns or something

sounds like it... they're supposed to come with earphones with a built in mic.

I also got those pair of Klipsch Image S4 headphones too.

What you may not know is that they are not all the same. This kind of connector is called a TRRS connector (tip ring ring shaft or something like that, as opposed to the TRS headset only connectors that have been around forever).
Our phone is arranged as such:
Tip = L
R1 = R
R2 = Mic
S = Ground
an iPhone (and many, many other phones) is:
Tip = L
R1 = R
R2 = Ground
S = Mic
There are adapters if you must have one that is incompatible, but they're a pain in the ass to find and the only ones I've found have been overpriced ($10).
If you use an iPhone headset on our phone, sound will work, but mic will not.

Are there any small adapters that can make it work?

I thought there is a driver on the Epic that detects the headset and configures what signal to send to the corresponding section of the plug.

I'm not so sure this is exactly right... I have an old iphone 3g and an epic 4g, and I have a mic that works on both of them...

Don't bother with the Klipsch s4i, the mic doesnt work on both of my android phones, but the promedia version works fine with my epic/evo. They are around $40 online from tiger direct. I ended up with a pair of Mee m6 with mic. $20 and sound pretty damn good. Built cheap, costs only a little! People on the other end say the mic is crystal clear.

I just tested again with my wife's iPhone 3GS Original headset (has mic, remote, and volume controls). The headset works fine, but the mic, volume, and remote do not work. I did pretty extensive research on it, and found pinouts for both around the web, which my diagram is based on. Perhaps as bighuta says they're supposed to detect but mine doesn't detect properly? Are you *sure* the mic works? Maybe we have different models and bighuta is right about detection, but the particular model of headset my wife's iphone came with (having volume controls) messes with the detection?

They definitely work with regular headsets (no mic) but that's to be expected if you consider that the connector for ground is in the same spot regardless of whether there is a mic or not... the detector would detect if there's a dead short between mic/ground, and if so, assume it doesn't have a mic. I am not aware of them being able to detect a mic/ground swap, however, and have a functioning mic--and my own testing appears to confirm that it does not (or at least can't detect and work with an iPhone 3gs headset).

Assuming I'm correct (which there appears to be some controversy over) then a connector that swaps the ground/mic pins (shaft and ring2) would allow a galaxy s headset to work for an iphone OR an iphone headset to work with a galaxy s (the same connector would work for either task). Unfortunately that item you linked is unclear as to what it does... whether it actually swaps R2 and shaft or if it's just a TRS (3 pin) to TRRS (4 pin) converter (almost entirely unnecessary, and certainly won't solve your issue).
I did find a converter in my searching but it was $15, way more than I'd pay for something so simple. If you do have a headset that doesn't work though, it might be worth doing that or building your own connector... if you're handy with a soldering iron and can find a TRRS male and female plug, that would be trivial to construct.
Sorry I couldn't offer more assistance.

I tried using a simple pair of earphones with mic designed for the iphone and they worked beautifully.
I also tried using regular headphones without a mic and using the default phone mic to talk and guess what? It worked!! Guess they finally fixed it in froyo.

Can anyone let me know which headsets work with the Nexus 4? I have a few sets from a nokia and htch but each give me a different problem.
Either the microphone on the lead does not work or the volume is quiet coming out of the headphones.
So if anyone has a good experience with a specific set please let me know.

I use Klipsch S4(II) in-ear headphones, specifically their Android variant. Mic just has the one button (seeing as Android doesn't seem to support 3 button mics).
Sound quality from ear phones is great, same for the mic, I regularly use it for calls.
I've had problems where other mics on earphones wouldn't work properly with my N4, mainly that I'd sound very quiet/far away to the other person on the other end of the call. Something about low input gain from the mic. Haven't had that problem with these though. At least not as badly though. Look around there just now, seen it's still an issue with N5 apparently...

Your description is exactly what I have been facing. Looking at those headphones they are pretty expensive. I'll wait and see if anyone suggests something cheaper that will work also.

Wow so these things really work? You don't sound far away when using them in a call? Can't go wrong with these if they work well!

Well, I didn't use them too much but the people i talked to when using them did not complain about anything

How's the sound quality, compared to other, more expensive, well known brands?

A lot of Philips headphones work. Apple, Sony (when it was Ericsson, don't know about now), nokia and some other brands I don't know use other wiring for their headphone jack. 3 rings on the pin, every pin has an other use

I am using the samsung S2 headset and it is very good with nexus 4

I'm using Urbanears Medis Plus. They come with a textile cable, in different colors and three different ear pieces, so that they fit perfectly, very good for sports. Sound quality is good, microphone works and they've got a button to play/pause or skip tracks

I suspect I'll eventually just keep them with me more often and charge them more regularly - but we're not there yet.
I found these JBL ones through HTC that have some potential. I usually like JBL stuff and these are the style that I like (with the little wing to keep it in place). They're marked down a LOT right now to $80 at HTC.com (from $200, also seen them at $150). I just placed an order to give them a try - can't really be sure they're 100% compatible yet, but I think they're worth a shot. I also haven't really found them sold at any other reputable places online (there's also an Apple Lightning version too).

The JBL's you bought from HTC should work. I know the HTC USonic earbuds won't, though, which is a bummer. They sound great on my U11. Can't comment on any other USB-C earbuds yet.

Ya, I remember reading somewhere that HTC's stuff isn't necessarily compatible with other USB C phones - which is dumb.

I just ordered those from HTC as well...seriously hope they're compatible, but I guess we'll see. I'd really prefer to never pull this dongle out of the box haha, but at this point I'm just happy to have that box in my possession after that whole launch/shipping fiasco
I tried pumping 1More for some info to see if they had any plans of make the quad driver (or even the triple driver) earbuds with USB C, since they already make it with that dopey lightning connection...and the response I received was that they may look into if some bigger companies begin using USB C...guess Google and others aren't quite big enough for them

Headphones are here! As mentioned, yes, they do work fine. I'd give them a 6/10, I guess.
I didn't even realize these are active noise canceling too. That's really not something I even care about but I guess nice to have? Generally I find that most in-ear buds cancel enough noise on their own for my needs. The ANC just isn't really something I'd seek out and pay extra for.
Anyway - I like the headphones. The buds are BIG compared to others I've had. Like I think I already mentioned, I like the wings with any of my in-ear buds to fit better and stay in place. And just like any others, these come with various sizes of both the in-ear portion and the wings.
Sound isn't bad. There's a JBL app for them where you can setup your own EQ and control the noise cancelation (you can also do that from the inline remote). I don't really notice a difference in the settings, but maybe I'll play with that more next time I'm flying (later this year). Since they are active noise canceling, they will draw power from your phone (and there's a permission popup when you first connect them).
Biggest complaint is that they are not loud enough. I wish it had maybe 2 or 3 more clicks of volume than it does. Maybe I won't care as much with the noise canceling, but I don't want to feel like I have to max them every time.

These may have compatibility problems like the HTCs though. I have a set of regular Xiaomi in-ear buds and really like them (comfort and sound quality). I'd like to believe these would be similar.

I've tried two different USB-C audio dongles from Amazon, neither worked. So far the only converter to work is the one that shipped with the phone. It will be good to see more headphone options.

That's unfortunate for those going the dongle route.
Were the ones you tried random "off" brand dongles that were just cheap? Or were they any sort of reputable brand?

Joseche and iTParts are the brands. I bought two of each and tested them all. They claim Moto Z support. Since it was Amazon, I send them back, no harm but I haven't found a dongle that works, other then the one that shipped with the phone.

I found an extra charger and adapter on eBay.

Same experience here. I emailed Essential to purchase more adapters (I like to keep them around the house, in the car, on my keychain, etc.) and they informed me that they do not sell them at this time. Bummer, so I went to Amazon and bought two of the Motorola-branded ones and of course, they don't work.
I think if I understand correctly, it has to do with Legacy USB audio. Some adapters have the DAC/amp in the dongle (which is what we apparently need on the Essential) and some route legacy audio through the USB-C port (like Motorola). So now I don't know where to turn.
Has anyone tried the HTC headphone adapter? If their USB-C headphones work on the Essential, then perhaps their dongle does as well. I guess it's worth another $20 gamble to see. Maybe it will even improve the audio

Reason is the dongle that comes with the PH1 has a build in DAC, when you plugged it in after the latest software update for the phone, you got a message to update the software for the dongle.

I've tried the HTC MAX320, no luck.

I used the ones included with the LeEco Le Pro 3 and they worked fine

Has anyone tried the Libratone Q Adapt USB-C Earphones sold by google they are also $150

I just purchased the Fiio BRT1 bluetooth adapter which has a high quality DAC in it (AK4376). Might be the way to go to charge and use headphones at same time without the dual-dongle approach. It should come today. Initial reviews for it seem positive. I have other AK-series DACs on other devices and really like them, so hopefully Fiio implements it well in this unit.
I think the best route though is to get a USB portable DAC/Amp unit and a usb-c otg cable for best sound quality -then you can use whatever headphones you want.
