I just bought this item from ebay. Very happy with the quality of product but the only problem i'm having is that if i try and call somebody while it is in the holder i can hear the person through car radio fine but the phone mic does not work... Is there away around this?

Hi All,
Before the site went down someone had asked if it had an external mic.. which is does not. The only thing i can think of if somebody would be kind enough to help me out so everytime i plug the Diamond into the car kit i run a program which changes the registry to allow mic to be enabled while in cradle. As i do not have those skills was wondering if somebody could help me out. Willing to donate to anyone that help me.

So that thingy you got there acts like a headset?
I guess it's possible to find the registrykey for enabling phone mic while headset is active...
yes that is right...... all it does is just transfer the sound via FM transmitter to radio in car. all i need help with registry keys. a program like diamond tweak would be cool where you could just enable and disable.
i am also interested about this product. Could you please tell me if the car charger charges the phone's battery or the transmitter's (if it has one)?And a second one:can i use the transmitter without the charger connected?

The charger that comes with it doesn't look like it'll work with the Diamond, based off of these pictures (non-usb). And does any1 know of an American/English site I could buy it from?
I've just ordered one. I expect it doesn't just power the FM transmitter but also the Diamond. I am hoping to get around the microphone issue by using bluepower to enable my bluetooth connection when it is charging and then using a bluetooth headset. I don't really want to use this FM transmitter/charger as a hands free device, but just keep using my bluetooth headset instead.
I will report back it this all works when I get it!
Ok, the thing finally arrived.... After 20 minutes of playing around with it, it is already broken.... Here's the story:
It arrived with no instructions (not that any are needed) and appeared to be of poor quality manufacture. Not like the Brodit one which I intended to replace with it.
My Diamond didn't slide in very well at all. It took a lot of fiddling to get the male charger into the female diamond mini USB. They weren't lined up very well. I expect that as the Diamond is far superior in quality, it is not the Diamond that is at fault but the charger/transmitter.
Once connected, the music quality was very good at times. I compared this to my ipod (which is connected directly to the car arial) by playing the same song on both. The music quality from the Diamond was actually better, so the FM transmitter was working well indeed.
However, there are intermittent "noises". I don't really know how to describe these as it was not typical interference, but kind of basey crackling. This was very intermittent though and this could be caused by being tested in London where there are hardly any frequencies free. I contined my test on various frequencies even when not moving the car and this noise was there on all of them....
I think this would have been enough to make this device annoying enough to be binned in itself.
A third attempt at inserting my Diamond in the cradle was much easier. Well, that's what I thought.... The male USB in the FM transmitter had actually broken now. It had slid back into it's casing. The only way to retrieve it would be to break the damn thing open. Enough was enough. I had finished my experimenting with this thing.
To make matters worse, the thick film on the home/back/talk/end part of my Diamond is now peeling off. I assume my struggling to get it in this FM transmitter cradle had snagged it. That's a real bugger because I guess that as it has now started to peel off, it will continue to snag on everything and eventually tear off completely. I'm not sure how this will affect it's functionality, but it certainly won't help. I expect the capacitive sensor in sensor scroll will no longer work once it has peeled off fully..... Probably time for a Diamond 2!!!
To conclude, my advice is not to buy this product as it (1) may harm your Diamond; (2) waste £20odd; and (3) cause frustration with the "noise".
The good points with this though, if you do decide to go ahead, are that you can use a bluetooth headset (with Bluepower). So if a phone call should come in whilst you are listening to music, you can simply take the call through the bluetooth headset and the music is automatically turned off. The microphone on the headset is used....

Good Looking man, preciate that review. I think i'm just gonna stick with a simple cassette adaptor to play music through the car. That way you don't have to worry about the static noise.
That's unfortuante that it's not the best build quality. How snug is the fit? I have a Sprint Touch Diamond so I might have to get the Touch Pro version to ensure it fits, but it might not be snug enough. More importantly, I'd rather get the phone's mic working with it and just activate the mic when in handsfree mode.
I live in Australia and on the first moderately hot day the whole thing pretty much fell apart, turns out they have used cheap hot glue to join every piece.
First the pole going into the suction cap fell out while i was driving, so i repaired it with decent glue. Then, later the mirco USB plug sticking out of the base disappeared inside, and after i pulled the holder apart i found it was also held there with the same crappy glue.
Anyway i would not recommend buying this car kit but if anyone could work out how to enable the microphone it would be much appreciated

anyone else have this problem? have anyone try with the oem samsung headset? we r stuck to use with the oem 1?
same here ... i think we need an option to say use headphones instead of headset which it is looking for .
The galaxy s seems to have a non standard alignment (probably because it isnt standardised) If i listent to music through headphones that have a mic on it doesn't sound right because i believe its playing through the wrong channels (trying to play sound through the mic probably!).
I think you're screwed, use a bluetooth headset instead.
I'm having the same problem. I couldn't understand why it wouldn't put voice calls through my own earphones (obviously without microphone). So I bought a Griffin Smarttalk adapter hoping this would sort it and I still have no luck. Even though this adds the three contacts to the headphone jack, still no calls will come through my earphones. Very frustrating. Whether or not this is a non-standard alignment, it should be fixable with software as the phone is able to play media through standard earphones. Why can't something so simple just work.

the samsung headphone jack layout is four pole t/r/r/s left right mic ground i think
it will not recognize an aftermarket headset with iphone jack config where the ground and mic is reversed or t/r/r/s left right ground mic
the samsung pin layout is similar to nokia's
i had a problem with my triplefi10vi too
so i got my old nokia 5310 headset adapter with mic and used it.
the layout is SGS<-nokia adaptor wiith mic<-triplefi10 standard cable without mic<-triplefi10
worked perfect
i can control the playback and answer call with the nokia phone adapter and it all gets routed to my triplefi10 iems
Yikes, your solution sounds like a Rube Goldberg contraption. An adapter to an adapter to the headsets.
This really sucks. Would have been a deal breaker for me had I known about it before buying the Galaxy S without option to return unless defective.
I wish some of the 100's of glowing reviews on the internet about this phone had caught this. All my headsets work with iPhones, Nexus One, EVO 4G, iPods, my MacBook Pro, etc...the Samsung's the only one with issues. Ugh.

and then just cut into it and cross the appropriate wires to give the proper t/r/r/s wiring. I think I'll run over to Best Buy and see if I can find something similar and give it a try.
I successfully made an adapter by taking a short 4-pole extension cord for iPhones and then cross-wired the mic and ground wires. On the iphone it's t/r/r/s (L/R/G/M) and on the Samsung it's t/r/r/s (L/R/M/G) - on the adapter I cut the cord open, then soldered the G->M and M->G.
Works great. Music volume perfect, headset works for mic and headphones in phone calls, and the mic switch answers/hangs-up the phone as well as pause/play music player.
I'm happily using my Etymotics HF2s on the Samsung with full functionality as I type this.
This is the kind of stuff I wish the industry would standardize on. iPhones, Nexus One, EVO 4G all wired the same, but apparently Nokia and Samsung wired the same different way. Silliness.

While I agree with you, honestly, the way I read this is you mean that Samsung and Nokia have it wrong. Which, on the surface, I just flatly disagree with. Now, anyone with facts can set me right, if Apple's interface is better from a quality standpoint then so-beit.
BUT...and this assume's I read your comment right, sense you essentially mean that since the iPhone, N1 & Evo 4G, then the two biggest cell phone manufacturers in the world have it wrong...Please keep in mind Apple is the new comer and that HTC, while having a long history with OEM builds that got rebranded, doesn't really have a long, storied history.
NO, what he is saying is that he wishes that all manufacturers would adopt the same pin-out. This would benefit everyone as then we could use any headset that we preferred especially as the Samsung is an in-ear type and they don't make and ear-bud type for the SGS which I would prefer. The SGS supplied headset would have been a deal breaker for me too if it was advertised prior to purchase.

Correct, that was my only point as it was written. I don't care who is right or wrong, I just want my aftermarket parts on something this ubiquitous to be interchangeable.
Buying a cheap cable and rewiring it isn't a big deal for me, but for most consumers it's probably never going to happen. There must be some third party adapter that works for exactly this, but I didn't find any with some quick searches that I was sure would work.

Wow, I really don't want to get into a pissing contest debate over who has it right and who has it wrong. That's really the only thing you took away from my post?
My background, as indicated in the signature below is mostly Apple and HTC products, so of course from my point of view, that's the "correct" way. LOL.
Seriously, my only real point, as said above is that I wish this were industry standardized. There's probably some secret agenda out there to sell more headsets by not making them not easily swapped between other products. I can imagine most normal consumers whose Etymotics or Bose or whatever didn't work from one phone to another just buying a new pair that did. Lots more sales for the manufacturers that way.
Since we're Android users in this forum, if I were going to debate who has it right or wrong OFFICIALLY for Android, I'd point out that the HTC/Google Nexus One is the officially anointed chosen phone from Google, and the official "reference phone" to show manufacturers what Google thinks is the right way to do an Android device. Since the Nexus One has the t/r/r/s of L/R/G/M format, it is the official Google way to design an Android phone.
In reality, Google probably didn't pay that much attention to that kind of thing, or if they did, they chose to go with the iPhone pattern as part of some strategy. Apple probably went opposite the industry norm for the reason of just being jack-asses with their i/o ports and because Steve didn't want you using anything but Apple headsets.
That said, and five minutes wasted arguing a point I don't really care about, I'll let you say you won the debate and I'll acknowledge that Apple/HTC/Google as the newcomers must be wrong with their design.
It still doesn't change the fact that I wish this were standardized across the industry, whatever the standard is, which was all I said originally. Note that my original post that you quoted said:

Big difference in the meaning of those two statements.

that sounds like my old Treo 650 / 600
If you use Bluetooth, you wont have that problem
Don't forget htc only recently started to use standard 35mm jacks, before it was 25mm and mini usb. God how that annoyed winmo users like me

The explains the plethora of 3.5 to 2.5 adapters on the Amazon market.
i really hated those 2.5mm plugs it was always annoying, i still have about 5 of those adapters at home that i don't use

How about using just an ordinary stereo headset like I do on all of my Nokias an iPhones?
Samsung should recognize it doesn't have a microphone and use the built in one, like all other phones in the world.
I can'd say it's a deal breaker but is pain in ass.
I can only hope it is software related and can be fixed in the future.

apparently something happened to my earphones. I'm guessing my roomies messed with it and busted it. I can see that there's a hole in the right earphone now.
I'm in search of an earphone which is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S. Sure I can get loads of better ones off play/Amazon. but I wanted to get the one which is compatible with my phone.
can anyone suggest me some in-ear earphones with volume adjuster or perhaps link me to original one?

As I have said in the first thread, I'm using a Nokia AD-54 with my own pair of headphones. IMO thats the best way to get highest quality. Because you can connect any high quality 3.5mm headphone.
P.S: For me Samsung's bundled pair sounds pretty bad, any $30 aftermarket head/earphone will sound way better.

the thing that nothers me is the polarity (mic/spk/gnd/gnd) thing, I wonder how many headphones/earphones support that..
I dont want to invest into something that doesnt work with my phone..

-Every normal Headphone does Work (without Heaset functionality, understandable)
-iPhone-compatible Headsets do not work on the Galaxy
Oh and in a Review about the Galaxy someone used several Headphones, all of them are working. For Example there were Sennheiser CX300.

Link to Sennheiser site is broken. I'm not sure about the other one either. Some say Sennheiser MM50 works, but I havent tried.
As for using a regular 3.5mm ear/headphone for music, everything works. I am using several different standard 3.5mm earphones and headphones, but remember, when you receive a call you have to disconnect the headphone to talk, built in mic disables as soon as you plug in the headphone. Its annoying, thats why I use the Nokia AD-54 adapter and a Bluetooth clip when walking outside.

If you do a Google search for Urbanears, they do a range of headphones that will work as hands free with the SGS. I have some of the over the head ones and there pritty good. They come with a variaty of headphone jack addapters for diferent phones and have an inline mic.

I use these earphones and I can say that they are the best!! Great sound quality... Extreme bass clarity
Apologise for resurrecting this thread, but I want to confirm that the Nokia Adaptor provided with the Urbanears range of headsets do indeed work with the Samsung Galaxy S.
I ordered a pair of Medis, but when the headset first arrived the Nokia adaptor was faulty, I emailed them that the adaptor wasn't working, and they responded asking for my address so they could send out a free replacement (they did not ask for any kind of proof of purchase). When the new adaptor arrived, it worked like a charm, media button and mic became functional.

To operate the headphones you should turn off the microphone of the iPhone, because in the Galaxy S the pins are reversed.
A test when you insert the earphones, hold the microphone, you will hear the difference.!

Hey is it possible to get the adapter separately? I'm using the KVconnections one with my NuForce Ne-7m and the plug doesn't fit my cases (had to enlarge the holes in a couple already - don't want to have to do it with the rest).

That's not a hole dear. There is one upper layer of some kind of fabric thats been removed or got removed. Go to any samsung service senter they will replace it free of cost if in warranty your phone within three days.
Same happened with me but my left earphone of headphone wasn't working and this time they replaced it with the better one.. M njoying.

Urbanears don't appear to sell the nokia adaptor seperately, but you could always try emailing them.
I bought my Urbanears (black set of Medis) from a third-party site, but when I contacted Urbanears directly specifying that the adaptor that came with my Urbanears did not function, they simply asked for my address and sent a replacement adaptor out to me, they didn't verify that I actually owned a pair of their headphones. Theoretically, you could send them an email pretending to be someone with the same problem, though it would of course be harmful to their business if abused.
Just a quick question: i noticed, that if i am using the stock headset with an old ipod touch, i always have to press the button to get all the sound. Is there any way to avoid this?

Surely there are adaptors availably which are sold separately? I use a Sennheiser BT headset at the moment (MM200) but would like a pair of wired, good in-ear earphones so I have one less battery to worry about plus the sound quality is better. But the one thing I love about BT is the remote control buttons and there are very few options available for Samsung compatible wired earphones.
Can anyone recommend a good adaptor?

Yes - use a rubber band to keep the button pressed
I use this adapter to make my NuForce NE-7Ms work with the SGS: http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm. In theory you should use this one since you're doing the reverse: http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r2m-r3f.htm, but they should be the same. As I said earlier, it works well but is bulky and doesn't fit my cases without modding
I can confirm two headsets working (tested) with I9000. The first one is Sennheiser MM-50 Nokia (the Nokia part is important, as they do also them for IPhone), second are the Stock Nokia's E52 ones.
After ripping my original headset I'had bought the Sennheiser's headset and must say I am quite pleased with them.

I mean there is no way to plug in my earphones and control calls/music... Exept of soldering iron... it's sad.
I'm looking to replace these stock earbuds.... they sound ok but the build quality is horrible and after 5 months of fairly heavy use the connector is already starting to separate.
Any suggestions? I want something with the same "stuff in" type feel, but something that's actually a decent price. I'm seeing a lot of $100+ klipsch and Skull Candy / Beatz or whatever the **** they're called.
Not interested in either of those gimmicky brands (dr. dre beatz or skull candy) but I could justify splurging on a Klipsch set if it was worth it.... looking for something a bit cheaper though lol

I have both, and found them via head-fi.org forums.
Both of these earbud headsets puts the stock one to shame. I prefer these over bluetooth headsets due to radiation emitted via Bluetooth as well as the phone by itself. Only disadvantage of these earbud/headphones is no active noise cancellation. (eg. a Bluetooth Plantronics Voyager Pro's noise canellation is a LOT better, especially in a car, bus or noisy environment, unfortunately not sure if the bluetooth signal itself is bad (long term) since it's right next to your skull.
If you want DECENT headphones (Good sound, Good build quality), you're gonna have to get a DECENT brand. Right now, beats are the best you can get (opinion), and skull candy's are DECENT, and not too bad of a price. Look on amazon, i got some 80$ skull candy's for 15 dollars and they're AMAZING

I don't know about any with a microphone, but get some Klipsch's! I own a pair of S4's, and they are the best earbuds I've ever had.
I don't think you will regret buying these things, and I will honestly say your music will come alive with these things.
I do believe they have a model of the S4's which has a microphone, but i'm not sure if they would work with the Epic, call them up and find out.
oh, I got my S4's around 60 bucks when they were on sale from vanns or something

sounds like it... they're supposed to come with earphones with a built in mic.
I also got those pair of Klipsch Image S4 headphones too.
Theyre awesome! It is worth investing in them.

If you use an iPhone headset on our phone, sound will work, but mic will not.

I thought there is a driver on the Epic that detects the headset and configures what signal to send to the corresponding section of the plug.

I'm not so sure this is exactly right... I have an old iphone 3g and an epic 4g, and I have a mic that works on both of them...
Don't bother with the Klipsch s4i, the mic doesnt work on both of my android phones, but the promedia version works fine with my epic/evo. They are around $40 online from tiger direct. I ended up with a pair of Mee m6 with mic. $20 and sound pretty damn good. Built cheap, costs only a little! People on the other end say the mic is crystal clear.

I just tested again with my wife's iPhone 3GS Original headset (has mic, remote, and volume controls). The headset works fine, but the mic, volume, and remote do not work. I did pretty extensive research on it, and found pinouts for both around the web, which my diagram is based on. Perhaps as bighuta says they're supposed to detect but mine doesn't detect properly? Are you *sure* the mic works? Maybe we have different models and bighuta is right about detection, but the particular model of headset my wife's iphone came with (having volume controls) messes with the detection?

They definitely work with regular headsets (no mic) but that's to be expected if you consider that the connector for ground is in the same spot regardless of whether there is a mic or not... the detector would detect if there's a dead short between mic/ground, and if so, assume it doesn't have a mic. I am not aware of them being able to detect a mic/ground swap, however, and have a functioning mic--and my own testing appears to confirm that it does not (or at least can't detect and work with an iPhone 3gs headset).

Assuming I'm correct (which there appears to be some controversy over) then a connector that swaps the ground/mic pins (shaft and ring2) would allow a galaxy s headset to work for an iphone OR an iphone headset to work with a galaxy s (the same connector would work for either task). Unfortunately that item you linked is unclear as to what it does... whether it actually swaps R2 and shaft or if it's just a TRS (3 pin) to TRRS (4 pin) converter (almost entirely unnecessary, and certainly won't solve your issue).
I did find a converter in my searching but it was $15, way more than I'd pay for something so simple. If you do have a headset that doesn't work though, it might be worth doing that or building your own connector... if you're handy with a soldering iron and can find a TRRS male and female plug, that would be trivial to construct.
Sorry I couldn't offer more assistance.
I tried using a simple pair of earphones with mic designed for the iphone and they worked beautifully.
I also tried using regular headphones without a mic and using the default phone mic to talk and guess what? It worked!! Guess they finally fixed it in froyo.

Just because I had some anyway I really like the Sony Ericsson headsets. Great sound, some have the music controls, most have a mic and can be picked up quite cheap.
The SE stereo bluetooth headsets work well too. The only issue is that song info may not be available if you go for a headset with display.

I am using Jabra street bluetooth headset..if you like using Bluetooth then I recommend it.. good voice clarity and good backup also. Once I charge it fully I can listen to songs 8 hrs continuously

So true... One of the reason I'm very interested in the Sensation with it's "Hi-Fi audio"
I have the AH-C560R from Denon, the remote is useless (not working even on Gingerbread which was suppose to fix that...), the sound quality is really bad for me due to the DHD audio output (this thing is a joke, really !!!)
If you have experience in soldering you can do it like me:
1. take an old SonyEricsson Headset with the good inEar Phones (W810i)
2. take the stock Headset from the DHD
3. Open the 3 buttons on den DHD headset with a flat screwdriver or your fingernails
4. Desolder the old phones and remove they
5. cutt off the 3.5mm Phonejack from the SE Phones
6. solder the SE Phones to the DHD remote
7. fix all with a few drops of hot glue
8. putt the buttons back on the remote
Enjoy a new soundexperience

You seriously think it has a crappy audio output? I mean i agree on the speaker part but the headphone jack isn't bad by a long shot. Atleast not compared to my previous two phones (Xperia X1, HTC Hero).

I am using the sennheiser cx 400 II, these work awesome however no headset control. It get's bothersome when riding my bike but i just cant manage to find a good pair without paying to much.
am using SONY MDR-XB40EX, good sound and bass but no remote...
What about the jabra rhythm headphones ? They tell they are compatible with dhd and they have mic, call/play/pause and skip tracks buttons ! Exactly like the stocks one. They cost 30$ on ebay !

but i got Sony MW600 bluetooth headset, and its great, got 12hr music time, volume controls, pause play skip back and forward and answer hangup controls. also its got a buit in fm radio transmitter, and they have a great in ear buds in 3 diferent sizes also u can actually connect any 3.5mm headphones into it
maybe worth checking out
I use westone 3 in ear headphones, they don't have a mic but whenever someone calls me i just bring my phone closer to my mouth lol
I don't think the sound from the Desire HD through headphones is that bad, it's probably on a par with my old Nokia N96. Still, if you're into high quality audio you shouldn't really be using a mobile phone for your music!

Got myself Phonak Audeo PFE 112s recently for just under 100GBP, must say the audio output on DHD is not that bad, it's not as good as an iPod touch but still really decent, especially if you use an equaliser such as powerAMP player.
But anyway would recommend the Phonak's to everyone, really good sound quality and they come with a mic and a single button that works with my DHD.
Having gone through quite a bit of experimentation on this, this is the optimal setup for me...
Sony Ericsson MW600 the three remote buttons all work well, but don't use the heat set provided, go for the...
Klipsch Image S4, very good, comfortable in the ear, though not noise canceling they do cut out a lot of external noise.
Finally PowerAmp, you won't get a better music player for the DHD that accommodates Bluetooth Stereo. Has it's only Equaliser and if you use the headset wired direct to the phone it will also allow you to use the Dolby and SRS effects for your DHD.

Agreed, I originally had a pair of Sennie CX300 II but I snapped the cable when it got caught on a door handle and thus ruined the headphones so I've gone and replaced them with a pair of CX500. Whilst they don't have a remote I think they offer the best sound quality, and best noise cancellation, for the price you pay.
