[Q] Rookie at rooting looking for help..... - General Questions and Answers

Hey XDA, I have just scored my first smartphone, a Samsung Epic 4G, and I am trying to root so it can reach its full potential. I have downloaded and installed the drivers, as well as Noobnl's one-click file, everytime I run the batch file it tells me device not found. I uninstalled drivers and tried again with no luck. I saw a video that said something about having the android-sdk, do I need this and if so where can I find it. I know there are a lot of threads addressing this and believe me I have gone thru them and am still having no luck, your help would be appreciated

[Q] Samsung Captivate on Windows 7 Laptop

Hey guys, new to the forum here, and I really want to root my phone but I've been having some issues.
I tried the galaxy s captivate one-click root program, but it seems my computer isn't recognizing my phone correctly, therefore causing an error in the program.
I have downloaded all of the samsung drivers for my computer and followed the steps exactly for the one click root, all with no luck.
If somebody could help me out, that would be great.
Search the forums for z4root, you can root your device from within android using the app.
For anymore questions on adb or connecting to your pc, please read my adb for dummies guide(link is in my sig).

Hey, i have windows 7 and a captivate. I have mine rooted.
I used this page for detailed instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
If you have problems, post again on this and i will try to help out. This is the method i used, and it was simple. It is the "one click root". Just follow the instructions and you will have an AWESOME phone in no time.
But, one word of advice. Your phone may go slow after the root for about 10 minutes. Just bare with it, it will get faster and awesome. It has a lot to reload back up, and you will find the "super user" app on your phone afterward
Thanks guys,
I ended up having to sideload the z4root app, but from there it was a breeze. now i just need to do some research on which ROM i want.

[Q] couple questions reguarding droid roms and other mess ups

First off, I am not new to forums..this is just the first time I have had enough difficulty and problems to actually post on a site, so I knew that xda would be the best site to post on.
My first question is this..I am currently running a rooted droid with cynoagenmods cm 7. Everything was running smoothly until I tried installing an update( update number 11 to be exact). I used rom manager to do it, the update downloaded just fine, but when I chose the option boot into recovery and install update nothing happened. I tried flashing a different rom amd no luck. Searched around awhile and couldn't find it, so any help would be appreciated.
While I'm here, one forum I read told me to delete all my super user data..pretty elementary but how do I grant su permission for rom manager? If possible id like to do it through terminal terminal emulator.
Id really appreciate any replies..I'm pretty new to rooting and downloading roms so thank you to anyone thatt helps out!

[Q] Frozen on "running psneuter"

Greetings!
I'm new to all this so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place. Please forgive me if I am.
I've spent the last hour searching all over these forums and the web in general for the answer to my question, but I haven't seen a resolution.
I have now tried the SuperOneClick root for my Nexus One about a dozen times, and it keeps freezing on "Running psneuter..." and never ever goes any further.
I have tried this on two different computers, I installed the USB drivers from the Android SDK, and I have USB debugging turned on. I've followed those instructions for what happens when you get in the loop, even though they don't seem to apply to this exact situation.
There have been a few other threads here that seem to be about this topic, but they simply die out with no apparent resolution.
Please help! I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Any ideas? I'd really like to root my phone, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...
Yeah, USB debugging on is fine..
Have you tried the gingerbreak APK?

I apologize for being such a noob to all this, but I'm not familiar with what that was. All anyone talks about in the "blogosphere" is SuperOneClick.
Does the gingerbreak APK simply root the phone and not mod it? For the moment I really just need to root. Eventually I want to MOD too, but first I want to get Titanium Backup Pro on there so I can save some game data before I MOD.
Again, sorry for being such a newbie. I haven't done rooting/modding since my G1 about 18 months ago, and things have changed since that...
I have to admit, I'm surprised how many posts I've seen with the exact problem I'm having, yet nobody has responded with an answer to this issue. There are dozens of comments on the Shortfuse site from other people who are stuck at "Running psneuter," and there are no fixes or even responses, really.
There seem to be many smart people on these forums, so it's strange that this hasn't been worked out or even addressed...
Exact same problem as above.. Locks at "running psneuter"
Pulling the usb then goes to ***IF IT KEEPS LOOPING.. Etc *** and then killing ADP server..
Nexus one
2.3.4
GRJ22
From what little I've been able to get out of others here, it seems that the problem is there's no exploit for 2.3.4 yet.
However, I found a guide to rooting here: http://goo.gl/oCWvR
It requires you to have an unlocked bootloader, a process that basically wipes your phone, so be aware of that. But I'm all rooted now so it's definitely possible to do.
Good luck!
I used the exact same guide.. went to post it to a thread here but as I have low post count I cant post links..
Bootloader was already unlocked.
Heh, well, once you get to SIX posts like I have, you're clearly a big-shot poster But yeah, that's a very good guide.
In the end, though, it wasn't what did it for me. I was still having issues with it, but it got fastboot on my system and got me started. I then followed the instructions on Cyanogen's site and put a different recovery on there in order to get CM7 installed on my phone.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy 551 Problem

Hello. I’m having an issue with my wife’s Samsung galaxy 551. I rooted the phone for her then she installed titanium back up and started deleting stuff she thought she didn’t need. I first noticed problems when she tried to download and install from the market. It would say, “Failed to install” Now I downloaded ODIN and all the firmware to flash the phone back to stock. When I hit start I get the error “Cannot open USB code 32” I’ve tried everything and can’t get this to work. I’m using original USB cable, rebooted, killed kies, ran as administrator. I can’t get in to flash. Is there anything I’m missing? Help greatly appretiated.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Make sure Kies isn't running in the background. I had a issue like that once and the solution was to kill Kies process (it usually starts with windows automatically)
Samsung Galaxy S2 Rooting?
Hey,
sorry i am new to all this....I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 and was wondering what "Rooting" actually ment, is it like Jailbreaking?
And is there anyway i can unlock the phone to any network for free (or cheap)?
Thanks,
Shaun
Rooting means unlocking superuser rights for the linux behind the Android. By rooting you can install all types of apps that increase the performance of your device but also brick it. With root you have full access to your device system files in other words.

[Q] Problem with my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay, so I got the GS3, rooted it, and everything was going great. Granted, I'm a noob when it comes to android and all their fun little gadgets, I kept the stock ROM on my phone... than T-Mobile sent out the update for the phones, I didn't unroot my phone before the update. I updated my phone and it is now NOT rooted. I have tried to root my phone again, but have been unsuccessful. My phone now says its modified, and I can't check for updates... the app called Triangle Away no longer works, and I can't get my phone to say normal status. My phone is still NOT rooted, however, it says modified. How can I root my phone now that the update has come out and has been installed on my phone that originally was rooted? I don't have a backup of my stock ROM when it was rooted because the update deleted my backup that I originally had. I have a 2003 DELL Latitude C610 with Windows XP Professional installed on it, and was wondering if my laptop was compatible with rooting my phone? The first time I rooted my phone, I had to use a friend of mines laptop because I could not root it on my laptop.Thank you for reading, PLEASE HELP!
My advice would be to flash the stock ROM that you updated to, with an insecure kernel that allows root. You will also need a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM (find them in the first forum link below).
You should check out the T-Mobile Galaxy S III Android Development forum for a bunch of ROM options. Here is a thread within the forum mentioned above that details all of the information you will need, along with the ROM download links and plenty of instruction.
If you are looking to stay stock, I would suggest flashing the pre-rooted T999_UVDLJA ROM, located in that forum. Since you lost root you should just use the Odin method to get your new ROM loaded. Once you are up and running, I would suggest getting a custom recovery on there ASAP for backups/restorations etc.

Okay, I will try your suggested methods and get back to you when I can.. thank you for your help
Okay, so I tried to flash the stock rooted ROM onto my phone, but the Odin program keeps getting stuck at "Get pit for mapping".. now I tried it on my friends laptop when I first wanted to root my phone and it worked, however, my friend isn't exactly willing to help me at the moment. Any suggestions? I have used multiple different cables and the cable I used on my friends laptop is the same one I'm trying to use on my laptop.. could it be my laptop that's causing the problem?
Hmm sounds like it might be related to your laptop since it worked before with your friend's box... Try setting Odin to Windows XP Compatibility mode with admin access. Unplug all usb ports except for your mouse/keyboard and try again. Hopefully that will let you get Odin past the "Get pit for mapping" issue.
Looks like this "Get pit for mapping" issue has been run across before, try reading up on it here if the above method still won't work.
Yeah, I couldn't manage to get it to work with my laptop.. I got it rooted with a different one though and made a nandroid as to prevent any problems on the future... Thanks for the help you had given
