[Q] appstosd 1.6 - General Questions and Answers

i am currently trying to create an app for android 1.6 and i am new to creating applications so be gentle lol. a major problem for those on 1.6 still like people with a G1 have very limited space available for apps, i see that apps to sd in 2.1 could be very useful if it were an app in its self as opossed to being a part of the os. cyanogen and their team of wizards have created a custom rom but what if you are new to this and flashing is either to hard or to risky for someone to perform? as i said i am new to this and could use a bit of help. i want to remove appstosd portion of a custom rom and use it as an app in itself. is that possible? someone please contact me about this if your interested in helping me develop something like this. we can share ideas via email and possibly work together to make those with outdated phones a bit happier with there less fortunate hardware.

Not exactly sure this is what you're looking for, but I came across this tut about enabling move to SD using the android SDK by editing the manifest xml file.
Sadly, I cannot post links, so you have to google "mobile.tutsplus move sd".
First result should be it.

ok it says that is supports all android versions from 1.5 to 2.2 but it only mentions 2.2 and says it must be 2.2 which is pointless cause 2.2 already has this feature standard. any other ideas my friend? i may have read it wrong, as i said i am new to this and dont fully understand everything yet. i appreciate your responce on this matter.

new Droid Sans for dev phone and other dev apks

First, the new Droid Sans for the dev phone works great! If you haven't seen it, check the market!
That program, and some of the other apks, such as the one for flash seem to get a ton of really stupid comments in the market. Also, the market now seems to be too big, with not enough sub-categories to find things easily.
IMO, there should at least be a category for advanced users and developers only. (Maybe even one which you would have to sign in to visit, with a big disclaimer saying something like "These programs will not run on most G1s. They are programs for rooted or (don't know if Google will like the rooted part), developer's phones. Many of them are apk's for developers to make it easier for them to write better apps for you, rather than stand-alone-apps. If you are a developer, or an advanced user, please sign up to download the apps."
Is there a place to suggest improvements to the market to Google?
(Maybe I just am feeling nasty after looking at all those grade school comments in the market).

tbh i think that if you had a moderator (obviously not just the one ) who
monitored the market and removed stupid comments and who could even issue 24 hour bans or something it would improve things tenfold.
and about the rooted section, google wouldn't like it but what can they do? no matter what they release people will find a way to get root access again google might as well just release cupcake with root access already enabled.
If Google released cupcake with root access, there would be an awful lot of happy G1 users!
I see you have RC30, do you have auto rotate with your pictures? Now that I've got the new Droid Sans, everything except pictures seems to auto rotate. (although I've only tried one photo so far, I need to check others).
which app is for flash?
would u send me code for how to use different font in android
installed this app- this rocks.

Action Script Reference. It doesn't do Flash, it's a help for Flash and Flex developers. (I added that in case there are any non developers reading this who think they are going to have Flash by downloading it).

JF RC33 or LucidREM No Multi-Touch request

"RC33JF" vs. cupcake - does cupcake have multitouch built in?
I expect some are going to jump on me for asking a dumb question, but a search on this site, which I consider the finest knowledge base around on this topic, yielded mostly conversations around the fact that cupcake will support multitouch, but they don't mention if it is turned on out of the box. In other words, would we need Luke/JF's patch work as we did with RC30 for multitouch to work, or would it just work as it should.
With RC33 out and my confidence in JF that there will be a "RC33JF out within a week" and what appears to be a MUCH more usable cupcake image (as of 2/2, anyway), I am thinking hard about if I'd give up RC33 and Maps, Gmail, etc. and just use AndNav, K9, etc. and APK repositories to survive to get my A2DP bluetooth and full time virtual keyboard, and cupcake is looking more and more promising...
first off, multitouch only works in the browser. Im not sure if the current browser would work with the cupcake firmware. If it does then you could just push it to the phone using adb.
JF or LucidREM can one of you please please please make this image without the multi-touch hack in it. You don't know how much i would appreciate it and probably others. Its too weird to have it throughout the OS and there aren't any apps that can utilize it.
I have no use for the multi and don't like the quirky issues that come with it.
Again please please please and thank you! Your work IS appreciated greatly!
you are incorrect multi-touch effects apps other than the browser in 1.41
It may cause problems but it doesnt work properly. The app would have to be coded to work with the hack. I dont know of any apps that have been coded to work with this hack.
It's off by default. Just go into your browser settings and uncheck what you checked in the first place.
I don't know much about it (multi-touch) but if it's built into the OS and (allegedly?) leads to some quirks here and there (does it?) I don't understand how you can turn it off from the browser...
I'm sure there are a lot of us who don't care about multi-touch at this point, so I would agree with the OP that it would be nice to have the option of a modified RC33 *without* multi-touch.
I would like to add my request as well.
Its off by default in the browser but the kernel is still hacked to sense multi-touch which causes issues with certain apps. This is because the hack uses an existing field to sense the 2nd finger. So apps that actually use that field for legitimate purposes don't work correctly.
Pls add me to the requests for a no-multi-touch version.
It is my understanding that you can turn auto rotate on and off in the browser, but not multi-touch.
there are the highest chances that multi-touch wont be included in cupcake..that is in the original unmodified update..

Which apps are having issues? Somebody mentioned Steamy Windows in another thread... what other apps are having issues. I like the auto-rotate/multi-touch functionality in that order.

I was having issues where my home screen would skip back and forth. I also had issues clicking the proper menu options/icons.
So yeah count my vote in too.

OMG, how many threads are you going to post this in? I've counted about 4. If your steamy windows app doesn't work on JF v1.41, go back to non-rooted. I took a look at your past 15 posts, and it all relates to the multi-touch. Version 1.31 didn't have it, you could use that...
/rant
Honestly, beggars can't be choosers.
If JF chooses to not implement this, I think it'd be a step back. You are all welcome to go back to 1.31 or even use the nonrooted version... or better yet, come out with your own version of root.
But, ultimately it's up to JF, and I really hope he doesn't waste his time making two separate versions of 1.33. Ofc, if you really want him to listen to you, don't be a beggar, and be a supporter.

If JF doesn't do it, someone else probably will... which is perfectly fine. Nobody is knocking JF if he won't do this.
I think people are just asking (kindly, I don't see anyone being a jerk about it honestly) for a "vanilla" RC33... As in, exactly as it came from Google except WITH root access added back in. No extra stuff, no recompiled kernel, no extra modules, nothing but root access added back in.
All of my posts are about it because it is the biggest issue with people in the 1.41 build.
The stock RAW image viewer does not work properly either...or cracked screen app....just becasue the apps that take advantage of the second field arent great right now doesnt mean that this isn't an issue. It could end up being a big issue since most dev's don't develop for hacked ROMS.
And for your info I have been running 1.31 for the past few days. I just don't want to see this hack pigeon hole users into not being able to use certain apps. I would like to be able to take advantage of future releases without having multi-touch.
Currently it is only a benefit in the browser and the stock zoom works much smoother, and in the rest of the OS it is a bother.
I will continue to voice my concern and it appears that quite a few others have the same concern.

Feel free to ask all you want. I think it might fall on deaf ears. The point I was trying to make, is that it's not necessary to post in 4-5 different threads. I think one thread would be sufficient enough...
I agree with justanothercrowd. I'm all for the multi-touch hack, but the fact that its using an existing documented field is an issue.
I believe if you search the threads JF has already answered this question or it has been at least brought up. The only problem that was really brought to light was the steamy app. Really I think this would be a huge hassle for JF who works for free to have to update two versions every time an update is to come out maybe a simple setting to turn it off would be easier and more likely.
a setting would be great. and im more than willing to contribute $$$ for the extra time spent. i would recompile my own but im not that savvy with the android platform yet.
any feedback jf?

Quick install maybe?

I know its still kinda soon and all but do you think that there will be something along the lines of this quick install for the pre for the evo soon?? I used to have it for my pre and I liked it a lot. I just think its an easier way to out themes and tweaks on your phone. Lets get some devs on this
AS far as I know, It does not exist, but it would be awesome.
I mean, I understand the ROM approach, and all is good, but is a little bit too much.... For instance, right now I have OMJ's rom that gives me anything I need, but, let's say, I want to add something.. like to edit the hosts file to avoid ads, I only have 2 options, either load another rom (and again wipe everything, restore from a backup, and manually tweak the data that was not backed up, like some edits inside contacts, quick dial, etc), or manually tweak the hosts file, but there is no software to help automate any tweaks like Quick Install.... (or patches or anything like that)

This is why we should make this a sticky and get people to make this happen. It would be so convenient and easy for the people that dont know what to do when it comes to the ROMs.
agreeeed! quickinstall and preware...aww man bring back the memories....
Can someone explain to me what this quick install thing is? Maybe I or one of my co devs can help make it happen
im quoting from the pre wiki:
Preware is a package management application for the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi. Preware allows the user to install any package from any of the open standard package repositories on preware.org (or any other location that hosts an open standard package repository). Preware relies on a custom written service developed from community research which allows the mojo app to talk to the built-in ipkg tool.
This application was the result of extensive community-based design in IPKG Service and Preware Design.
For application management, Preware can access more applications, and has more features, than any other on-device package installer.
And since it is open source, and has a completely open development process supported by a team of world-class WebOS Internals developers, it will continue to get better much faster than any other package management application.
Preware is the open application installer that has been written specifically to support a homebrew ecosystem where any developer can upload any application to any submission site, and that application can then be installed by any user. Developers no longer need to upload their applications to multiple submission sites, and users are no longer excluded from accessing applications from any open standard package repository.
quickinstall is essentially the same thing but all actions done via your computer
the homebrew community for the pre was INCREDIBLE, im hoping with the growing number of users here that hopefully it will be just a good here!
Well first, the dev community here is much better. Trust me. It takes a little to get off our feet because WebOS and Android are completely different and HTC tries to block us at every move. The Evo community is moving faster than any other XDA Android community has. Don't doubt our devs
I knew what Preware was. I didn't realize quick install was the same thing. Ok so basically you want a repository consisting of what? Roms?
roms, patches, tweaks, themes, hell even some apps on the low low haha
haha i still have my pre and follow the updates on preware using wifi.
i think if devs use rom manager that would be great...and i am sure all devs will get on that soon enough
haha yea i have noticed work on the EVO moved alot faster than any of the other android phones...
thanks for your responses chuck, ill be getting more involved here and always let me know if there is anything i can do to help.

why is that? i only ask because with the pre, palm was a really big supporter of the dev community...it just seems counter productive for htc to try and block users efforts to make the phones even more desirable and customizable...i know thats what drew so many people to the pre...also one of the reasons i loved it
Are you referring to something like metamorph maybe used it on my hero a lot
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
ahh yea i guess in a way rom manager and meta pretty much do what preware does
i guess maybe we were trying to see if it could all be consolidated to one place [make it evo specific] and have a few more features and options??
for example: there is not flash for the camcorder...perhaps a patch to change that? or like when the light senor detects a face the phone is in earpiece, when you move your face away it automatically goes to speakerphone [i use these two examples because they are somewhat recent developments on the pre] but now that I have an idea of what kinda tweaks are possible i think we could probably move really quickly
havent played with metamorph yet but i will def check it out tonight]
EDIT #1: upon future researching metamorph it seems even more like preware than i thought, BUT the OP was talking about quickinstall...i am cool with either haha thanks for the replies
EDIT #2: i just tried to install and i guess its not ready for us yet...ill be patiently waiting i guess hah

[Q] G Tablet Ginger 2.3.4 com.android.future.usb PLEASE

Hi everyone, For the last two weeks I have been trying to develop my own custom Gingerbread + custom view sonic kernel.
Today I finally have them packaged into a update.zip file but it wont install due to status 6. Sadly I really have no clue if thats the last part I need to over come before I can install, or perhaps there is more than just that issue since the only tutorial I could find were dated / incorrect / incomplete / or written by someone who ate pain chips as a child.
So Really all I want is Gingerbread with com.android.future.usb.Accessory / Manager
AND (this is important also)
I also need the Viewsonic kernel to support the Prolific driver 2303 (this is in the menuconfig so it should be easy to add).
In addition, if anyone could please point me to resources when I can accurately learn how to build the OS / Kernel / update.zip file that would be wonderful. My head hurts so badly from reading all these broken english posts where the scrip examples are riddled with typos.
Oh also two weeks ago was the first time I ever saw Ubuntu (thats what im currently working on as well).
Thank you and sorry for the aggravated post but I seriously need help, my job is in the balance. Thanks Again
Anyone know of a rom that has these features already in them? Or perhaps a good couple of tutorials that will allow me to create my own? I dont want anything fancy just plain vanilla.

this is the thread i used to get me started compiling a module for pershoots kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916198
obviously run your own menuconfig somewhere in there (i think its in one of the steps) and turn on whatever you want. Also save the modules that you create as the default pershoot ones wont insert into your custom module at that point
[edit] there is a thread in the gtablet devel section for pershoots latest (i think 2.6.32.42) that may have this already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903505 [/edit]
Thanks for the links. I was able to pull the config file from Ginger 2.3.4 and it seems to have the required driver for the prolific usb to serial converter, although when I write a usb detection program and attempt to load it onto the tablet, well I get a missing shared library com.android.future.usb.
So now thats kind of odd because its 2.3.4 and Google specifically says it supports the library I need. So I guess what Im asking is there any Ginger or even honeycomb OS for the Gtablet that supports this?
Once again Thanks for a point in the correct direction.
Is there anyone I can communicate with directly in creating this? Ill be more than willing to donate my work so that it could be built upon. I just can not believe that this has not been added in yet.
Ive pushed android.hardware.usb.accessory.xml to /etc/permissions
and ive pushed the com.android.future.usb.accessory.jar to /system.framework
This seems to do absolutely nothing. Does anyone have a version with the USB accessory working for the G tablet? Or could anyone Communicate with me directly perhaps by IM? Thank you very much again.
So after some tweeking I can now get my program that requires com.android.future.usb.accessory although thats all it does. It wont detect the USB or use any USB features. Im sure im programing it wrong, although It detects USB drives and keyboards and such it will not detect my USB to serial Prolific cable.
Im trying to compile the kernel and install it but really, nothing works... Im typing commands I dont know what they mean, and i get responses like "Permission denied" so I use sudo on the command and get "not a valid command". So I didnt have permission at first, then once I did it wasnt a valid command? No wonder why ****ty old windows stomped ubuntu into the ground... I feel windows phone will destroy google if its this hard to develop a single app that I have on the IPHONE / WINDOWS PHONE / WINDOWS 7 but cant get it on android... WTF
Im just wondering how you successfully compile Gingerbread 2.3.4 and Leave out part of the MAJOR update. Why not just use 2.3.3?
Anyway Ive personally fixed that, although when i pull the kernel it shows the prolific driver is installed but there is no detection when I plug the cable in.. Nothing nadda. just like the replies to this post. Im guessing people dont have any problems at all with all the really bad tutorials out there and the lack of support even on this, a developer site, I cant even ask questions to the developers because I dont even have 10 posts yet. Also it just seems like the only thing people on this site is Over Clocking. It done matter if its a peice of ****, as long as its over clocked, Or some of the roms I installed and they are SO bad, but man they are over clocked... Or the roms that say they are 2.3.4 and happen to be 2.3.3. Or the ones that just wont install. How has android made it this far, its actually pretty bad, but then again im sure Im the only human with these problems, because I really cant find anything on the Internet after a good long while. I tough myself enough law to win a law suit against a company with high priced lawyers in less time than this is taking... And im no good at law at all.

Are ICS Google apps possible on our roms?

I've been browsing the other device forums and seeing some success with modifying the ICS gmail for use on devices that don't yet have ICS running. Is this possible for the MT4GS? The new Gmail app in ICS is a huge improvement. Same with the Google Calendar. The new Google music isn't linked to ICS so we have that. Wondering if there is a way to get some of the other Google goodness til we have full ICS. Anyone working on this for our phone or know anything related?
Doubt it but it would be awesome. At least to be able to take the GMAIL app its a definitely must, but I can wait for now.

Absolutely it's possible.
The only issue is how much work has to be done to make it compatible - on that score some people would say it isn't, because they don't/can't do the work necessary to make it happen.
I haven't had the time to look closely enough at the ICS stuff to tell ya for sure, but even if it came down to basically re-writing the whole app to include the new changes in a gingerbread installation it would work.
(I did download ICS source from google a bit ago, but haven't had time to comb through it much at all)
Anything using stuff like Face Recognition or any of the new technologies would most likely be off limits without re-writes to other parts of your ROM.
It's nowhere near drag-and-drop if that's what you're asking, but the right attitude and investment of time can get it all worked out.
Thanks for the replies! I'm only a beginner developer (thx to your tutorials actually Blue6IX) so I'm looking into it to see how things work and just poke around. My goal is stability. I LOVE the work that has been done on ICS but it still doesn't run too many different apps that I (and presumably others) have already bought on the market while GB runs them all flawlessly of course. Seems like it might at this point be easier to make google apps run on GB than make an assortment of apps from different developers run on ICS.

That would be pretty awesome.
I've been wrapping up all the stock apps we have from the 1.28.531.9 and 1.55.531.3 update for our phone, and turning them into flashable zips.
What you might want to keep in mind for after the app is compiled and working (right - easier said then done) is to download a couple of said zips to see how I did it - then you could just use them as a template for the new ICS apps you make. I also have a tutorial on edify scripting and a thread with a whole mess of scripting tips in it, so I can link them later if you want.
Get yourself a linux install if you don't already have it and download the ICS source code, then start the trail and error of compiling the apps to work. I'd start with something simple you can compare with, like maybe:
Stock ICS calculator, and compare it to the stock Gingerbread calculator. I'll be posting the stock gingerbread calc in a flashable zip within the next few hours as I get more of the zips I already made linked to the thread.
If you can make the calc work, then you have a winner, and an easy step on the learning process of making it happen, then the rest of the ICS apps from source become easier.
Just a thought
I'll help when I can, but i've got a lot on my plate - I think this is a great project for someone to tackle though!
