Newer kernels dont require this as cwm is built directly into the kernel..

I just got done reading this thread about not using Rom Manager EVER on the SGS4g, so I went ahead and used it and my phone boot loops now....what gives? I figured that it may work with a vibrant ROM as I heard it works on the regular galaxy s, so I Odin back to stock, reinstalled Rom manager and flashed cm7 for the vibrant...now my phone won't even boot...what gives? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's almost like Rom manager doesn't work on this phone or something. Someone should make a step by step guide for flashing this phone...you know, like an SGS4G Bible.

That would be freaking awesome if this helps.... however people would have to read BEFORE using their "knowledge" of all things android.

That's something I've been seeing WAY too much these days!
EDIT: I just noticed I have 69 thanks. ;D
Yeah stickies. Bet it still gets asked twenty times a week though.
What consequences will have installing Rom Manager?
What if I installed it but didn't use it?
I'm experiencing a lot of crashes and reboots and maybe I've finally found the reason.

If you installed it and didn't use it, no problem.
If you used it to 'install', then you earned a one way trip to using Odin to get everything back.
Raver, if you don't mind could you please make the title have capital letters and not lowercase like it does. There is no reason for it other than everytime I open the forum, it bugs me. Also, what is up with the "bold" html command ""?
I wonder what goes through other peoples heads when they decide hey I'm going to root my phone and install a custom Rom. I mean the first thing I did was a Google search on how to root SGS4G. That lead me to XDA. Then I found the actual SGS4G forum and began searching for guides. This was the same process for my MT3G and my G1. I don't understand why people would just grab Rom manager and assume it's a cure all. Boggles the mind.

that works out fine if the first thing you get led to is xda, but if you are unlucky like me then you end up at joe schmoe's tech blog or something similar and they tell you that any android phone can be "hacked" with superoneclick and rom manager. thats where the true issue lies, imo: that not the sites state the same info and most of that is wrong.
Thanks raver!

+1 Sure there were multiple sites related to the subject, which is why you take a little bit of time to examine more than one. I know I didn't just click the first option and run with it.
This post got me thinking. We have the SGS4G Bible but apparently it can be a little overwhelming and too much information for some people to digest before they start modding their phones.
Keeping the biblical theme maybe a simplified "SGS4G TEN COMMANDMENTS" that contain the ten most common questions and answers, noob mistakes, and does and don'ts in one place. Simple, easy to read, and easy to refer people to. For example...
Commandment 1: DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER...EVER!
Commandment 2: DO NOT FLASH VIBRANT ROMS....EVER! - THE SGS4G IS NOT A VIBRANT!
etc, etc....you get the idea.
Any thoughts?

I dont know if this will work for sure but I dont see why it wouldn't. and as always the safety message. you will void the warrenty and you could possible brick your phone. flash at your own risk and enjoy

here is my way of rooting it. i suggest you follow the "optional" steps, if possible. they arent necessary, but just in case you need to revert. ive tested this (made it just today) and it does not leave CWM installed. for now, if you need that after, youll have to figure it out yourself. if you do, can you tell me how? id like to add it to the end of the guide. lol. im still a noob. anyways, just follow the steps (noob-friendly if you dont know what youre doing) and you should be fine. pm me if you have any probs. ill have a pure recovery update (no root, CWM, busybox... nothing. just like a factory reset of the stock rom without root.) and a rooted version of that up soon, so if anyone needs that, its all good. just make sure you back it up first, please.

Hi, this is a really noobish question but i'm a bit curious. I have a g2x that is rooted, 2.2.2 froyo and i want to update it to the newest android version. Does that mean i must unroot my phone and then update it? Or is there a way to do it without unrooting?? Thanks!!
Search for how to flash clockworkmod recovery on the g2x. Follow those steps and then you can use it to flash any rom you want that is compatible with the g2x. Unrooting beforehand isn't necessary. If you flash a custom rom with an updated android version, it will already have root access. So no need to even reroot. Look around in the forums on your own for a while, there is plenty of information here.

Most of you're questions can easily be answered, by doing alot of reading, and searching through the forums,
(however)
There is a 'sea' of information in the forums.
So much so that it can be overwhelming To someone who has never flashed or modded their phones.
"So yes do alot of reading and research"
( but remember)
We are here to help each other,
So before you just go off and do it Willy-nilly, if you have any questions, ask and we can help you through the process.
And if your a visual person you can find alot of info on YouTube and such.

Hey guys.
Sorry for asking this, but Ive looked everywhere and tried 2 different kernels flashing with both heimdall 1.3.1 and 1.3.2, as well as odin 1.85, and I just cant seem to find the right kernel that will flash properly through either flash tool. All I want is to be able to put a new rom on this cappy I JUST picked up.
I have a motorola atrix and a samsung s2 skyrocket, and change roms like theyre underwear, lol. But with no official CWM that can be easily flashed through rom manager, Im having trouble figuring out how to get CWM on this thing. Im not a noob, troll, or whatever else people hate, lol. Its just that there arent any new threads in the cappy section about this, and all the instructions Ive found are at least a year old, and havent worked for me.
I just need to be pointed or guided in the right direction so I can start having fun with this bad boy!!
Thanks guys!!

I had problems too, i just figured everything out and this worked for me.
To do this successfully, you need to be running gingerbread on your cappy.
1.) go to goo.gl/4vmPj
2.) read EVERYTHING and make sure you understand it.
3.) Download the Odin and Kernel they provide. I suggest the kernel v.7.05 that it recommends too because other versions gave me problems this version worked the best for me.
4.) follow all the steps there, it will give you cwm recovery AND root.
5.) Now you can flash any rom from the captivate android development section like normal but this first time when going from stock to a custom rom, DO NOT wipe data/factory rest in cwm!!
6.) Enjoy :good:
Appreciate the help fellas!
I followed your link anwarkhan and corn kernel worked perfect! Just complete my first backup of stock, so now its time to play!! lol
But my ACTUAL problem turned out to be odin not recognizing the device. I didnt realize it wasnt seeing it.
Turns out I just needed to update the samsung drivers on my computer. I thought I had done that through heimdall, but aparantly not.
Just went in and manually updated them and voila!
Thanks again guys
Yeah, Heimdall installs it's own drivers, and those specific drivers are only installed to the one usb port that u r connected to with ur phone at the time of the install.
Odin uses the drivers from samsung.

Awesome!! Thanks again!!
Quick question.
Why are you not supposed to do a factory reset when coming from stock?? Just a little curious.
Sent from my SGH-I896 using xda app-developers app
Not sure why that was posted. Because when flashing a Developer's Rom it will be a full wipe rom anyway, usually.
And ur apps and other stuff u should have backed up before flashing.

That's what i figured. Anyway, I'm happy to report that i am now running aocp 4.2 jb, rooted and recovery'd, lol. Thanks for the helpful hints fellas. Let the games begin!!!

No problem, I'm glad everything is now working for you. && you aren't supposed to do a factory reset when coming from stock because if you do, when you flash the rom and kernel and reboot, your cappy will directly boot into recovery and recovery only and wont boot into the rom. That's the problem I had a few days ago which took me a while to figure out.
Hey out there
I was looking for a way to dump my tabs stock firmware, apon looking through all the forums I got lost.
I know there are already leaks of the stock os, but I wanted a learning experienc.
Im already rooted with the ofical cwm recovery, so if theres a good samaritan willing to drop some knowledge on me im all ears.
Thanks
