Hi,
in case you have few minutes of free time I would appreciate if you could have a look at my app (Painting, free in Android Market) and report back how it behaves on your device (2.2 required) ...
Painting is a paint app with aim to provide a virtual color book for kids (e.g. you draw the contour, your kids color it). I plan to include some templates later on together with a browser or random pick from templates available.

Nice app. I always liked playing around with paint. Nothing like photoshop... but that's besides the point. lol
One thing I noticed just real quick. When you select the "draw" button and start to draw, then switch to the "paint brush" mode, draw with that... but if you want to go back to just the regular "draw" mode... you have to go through the whole cycle again to get to the "draw" mode. It would be nice to have a drop down menu or something so that you could just click, then select what you want. Instead of having to cycle through all the options.

Thanks for the feedback - I think I will separate "Draw/Move mode" buton from "Pencil, PaintBucket" button hence it will be more intuitive and faster to switch as indeed those two methods are used most often one after another.

Nice changes. Just installed the update. I like that the buttons are seperated now.
One other (minor) suggestion... is changing the order of the buttons. Having the pencil and then the fill bucket... and then the brush 3-4 buttons down, is a bit annoying.
If you could (and want to), I would adjust the order of the buttons to a more logical order (pencil, brush, fill, eraser, undo/redo, etc.).

Making use of the Grav Sensor

I grabbed the most recent version of the API that's been floating around for hooking into the HTC grav sensor and created a little etch-a-sketch style program using a tweaked version of it. I was hoping to get a little feedback on the changes I made and how I'm using it in this application.
I tried to fully explain what I did in a blog post I made about it, but have also linked to the source files (VS 2008) and the exe/dll for the phone if anyone's willing to take a look at it in any of the mediums and give me some feedback on the way I went with it.

Any comments, criticisms or suggestions at all?
I can't draw with a pen and paper, but....
Some thoughts:
Perhaps add a pen-up / pen-down feature. I did notice that you can tap on the screen even if tilt is enabled to reposition the cursor, however maybe link it to a hard button so you can do this without touching the screen? Make the cursor flash or something while in pen-up mode.
Another thing that would be cool is when the tilt is enabled, perhaps have an overlay or small area that would have a "direction/speed" indicator - this would give the user an idea of how far they have the screen tilted etc. Doesn't have to be large at all, in fact. Maybe a little picture of two moving etch-a-sketch knobs
Would there be a way to "flash" where the cursor is at? For instance, if I draw with the color red - and I draw into an existing set of pixels that are red, I can lose track of the cursor. Perhaps outline the edge of the painting cursor with the cursor's complimentary color so it will show up even if you're drawing over other colors.
Also, you can draw off the bottom of the screen (in my limited testing.) The cursor keeps drawing in the direction you're tilting, but the menu at the bottom obscures the painting. Perhaps limit the drawing screen to the visible canvas?
Other than these suggestions, this app uses the input well - I could generally move the fuze and have the drawing accurately reflect using the g-sensor. Very nice!

LectureNotes app

I'm curious about peoples' opinions of the app "LectureNotes" by Acadoid Developer and how it stacks up against the other main players in the active digitizer game. I've only been using my TPT for a few days' worth of note taking and haven't settled on a specific app yet, so I would like to hear thoughts on how you chose your primary note taking app.
i use ezpdf reader usually and just annotate my notes onto the pdf lecture slides.
if i need free form writing, i use free-note as it has keyboard + pen input
or quill if i just need pen input.
personally i haven't tried lecture notes, but it seems like MyScript Notes Mobile preloaded with the TPT

I've been using TPT for about 2 weeks now, and like the OP, I haven't really quite settled on a specific handwriting app..
Key uses for me are:
- taking notes during meetings
- something to help me in my Japanese language study
- some silly doodling/sketching fun
Some apps I've tried:
- Notesmobile
- Antipaper
- Writepad stylus
- Lecture notes
- Asus' supernotes
- Freenote
- Quill
For lecture notes specifically, I like that I can choose checkered pattern for the background and set the pattern size, as that is perfect for writing in Japanese.
But I found that it lags quite a bit when writing, and there isn't an easy way for me to scroll between pages.
So I haven't really been using it much in the past week.
For the moment, I've sort of settled with using a mix of Writepad, Supernote and Antipaper. Sadly, neither Supernote nor Antipaper has stylus only option
Still waiting for the one app that can do it all!
Might never come, but I can always hope, can't I?
I use Lecture Notes and have more or less canned every other note software. Lecture Notes just has way more features that I need. It can export in many ways. It can backup all my notes to dropbox, great support for inserting images and easy to change color, pen thickness etc.
Only think missing is better organization of the notebooks themselves. When that's here, it will be perfect.
It's also by far the most stable of Quill, Notes mobil and asus supernotes.
Personally, I have tried a lot of handwriting notes apps until I cam to this one. At that time this one worked the best overall in my opinion. When I first started using it didn't have everything it has now. But it was already robust and never crashed. I had one issue after a full system crash and reboot that wiped out the content of one notebook. But I simply loaded my backup from the day before without issue and kept rolling.
I have about 15 different notebooks on there now and I use them daily for work notes as I am walk around the office working on equipment or meeting notes.
It doesn't have the handwriting recognition features you find in other apps but I think that is what keyboard are for and I wouldn't write a document up that way anyway.
My good things list.
First, The developer is always adding things per user requests. Options for everything you can think of.
Second, it is being developed directly on the TPT and it seems to be one of the only ones able to be truly palm rejection friendly by only allowing the app to pull input from the pen (Option can be disabled for those that don't have a pen).
Third, and again the endless options... every type of custom settings, scrolling options (one finger, two finger, scroll bars and bar thickness), export options, backup options, sharing options, zoom options, page size - color - patterns, simple drawing tools, cut paste - copy paste, and on and on... every time I turn on the tablet it seems there is anther update to this app.
The dev listens to the feedback and finds ways of making the ideas work. I have submitted several ideas that have become reality.
It isn't free... but I would buy it a second and third time if I could just to support the dev team.
I see a brighter and brighter future of this app.

Note that I uploaded v1.12.2 today with a couple of minor additions, the most important one probably being the possibility to choose the directory where the app stores your notebooks.

I am using the trial version, but i am already convinced of buying the full version. I have a suggestion to make :
The software really needs a laso eraser it will make it more feature-full

LectureNotes has a `lasso´ eraser, moving the eraser in a closed path so that start and end point are close deletes the interior.

Perfect, i just tried the laso eraser and it works like a charm, so i bought the software .
I have another suggestion : The software lacks the ability to draw basic shapes (rectangles, circles, lines...), and from my humble point of view, basic shapes are very important for fast and accurate drawing when taking notes.

The app contains simple drawing primitives, they are part of the pencil toolbox (as long as you do not disable this in the settings). Choose `Show pencil toolbox´ in the pencil menu to get the toolbox displayed, click-and-hold to move it around. A single click on one of the standard or custom pencils chooses the pencil and a double-click on one of the custom pencils opens the `Custom pencil settings´ dialog; a click on one of the drawing tools activates the drawing tool, another click inactivates it.

OK, so far this is the best note taking application for android platform, it works exactly the way it should. But the UI is a bit ugly frankly you should work it more. A software like yours deserve a sexy fantastic UI :
- Attractive icons cause the actual ones looks dead to me, note Books icons for example looks horrible
- The ability to go forward and back in pages using forward and back buttons (more convenient sometimes instead of just scrolling or doing a notebook overview and select the page from there)
- Notebook overview should have an icon in the top tools bar for easy access
One last thing, when you use palm heuristic there is no way to zoom but using the zoom function in the menu witch have a fixed zoom ratio, i suggest to add a zoom slider in the top tools bar where you can specify how much you want to zoom when using (or not) palm heuristic.

Many thanks for your kind comments. I certainly agree that the icons can be improved, but I am not an artist and I do my best.
The app allows to go forward and backward page-wise by using `One page forward` or `One page backward´ in the hand menu; alternatively, to move quickly through your notebook without changing mode or switching to notebook overview, switch on `Permanently display scroll bars´ in the settings and drag on the scroll bars (the bar thickness can be increased in the settings).
`Notebook overview´ is just two clicks away in all modes (one click on main menu and one click on the item), I do not think that it is worthwhile to add an extra icon.
When using the heuristic palm rejection, one or two fingers gestures for scrolling and zooming are restricted to the hand mode, but being in this mode you can scroll and zoom continuously. Besides that, there is a zoom slider at the left side, you can change zoom by dragging it (the bar thickness can also be increased in the settings).

The major new feature is to allow folders of notebooks (and folders of folders of notebooks, etc.), but I also added LectureNotes as an image receiver (so that the app shows up when you share an image) and fixed a bug that could cause the app to crash when using a template for a new notebook.
To allow folders affects all parts of the app (notebooks board, notebook content view, notebook overview, notebook index, notebooks board index, ...). I carefully double- and triple-checked all features and things should work as before. Please drop an email to me in case you noticed something unexpected and I will do my very best to fix it quickly.

This is a wonderful feature Markus that I didn't realize I needed until just recently. Love it I like the idea of changing the icon on the folders so they stand out more. I also love the new storage location setting, it eases my mind to know it is on my external_sd.
Also, I dunno if I am just being dense, but I cannot seem to figure out the navigation menu when enabled in settings. Within settings, under Settings > Menu > Enable app's launcher icon menu and it says it provides a navigation menu at the app's launcher icon. I've always assumed this was an extra navigation menu in the top left corner, but cannot seem to ever be able to use it.
Any thoughts?

In case you switch on the menu at the app's launcher icon, you should see a menu when clicking on the icon in the left upper corner (in difference to the case when this option is off, then you get a message that there is no functionality assigned, with the exception of notebook content view where the changed pages are flushed to the file system). What happens in your case? Does the icon highlight when you click on it?

It doesn't seem to do anything when I click on it, with either my finger or with the pen. And it doesn't seem to matter if I have it enabled or not. Neither scenario causes the icon to do anything. It doesn't highlight or say/do anything. It also does not matter what screen I am at, the icon never does anything. Whether I am within a notebook, folder or at the notebooks board screen. Odd.
Would this have anything to do with that I am running ICS?

[GAME][4.0+] Shape Rotate

Hi guys
I am a software engineering student, eager xda reader and in my (little) free time i like to mess around with my android phone. So i developed a little game over the last half year. It's called Shape Rotate.
I wanted to do a simple but new game, not another flappy bird clone. So finally i put the first version online in the playstore yesterday, here is a short description:
In my game you always see two equal shapes, in random rotations. Your task is to rotate the outer shape so that it is equally aligned to the inner one - once they are aligned equally tap the screen anywhere to get the next one. That sounds easy, but since time is not on your side (you gain some extra time every time you get the two shapes aligned identically) it gets really tricky once the shapes are not that obvious any more. The goal is to survive as long as you can.
It would be really great if you check it out, i would really appreciate feedback (or, even better: positive reviews )

It is of course free (no in-app purchases or what-so-ever), and i plan to add a lot more different shapes in the future! I attached some screenshots of the app, and i also added a demo video in the playstore description.
Great game. Has great potential to be a time waster. There does seem to be some lag between the shape changes that can prematurely end your game. Get that timing down and you've hit a home run.
As for some suggestions to add. Maybe have levels to unlock similar to an angry birds setup. In level one hand similar shapes with minimal colors, next thing to unlock, add another shape or two with an additional color. Thus making each level progressively harder.

I tested it on several devices from an I9000 to my Nexus 4. The only lag i found was that on older devices it takes some time to start the game, but once it displays the first shape i haven't found any lag :s
Yes i already thought about such a thing - creating different "shape packages" and unlocking them time after time. That is definitely a good suggestion for the future and i will soon start working on this. This now is just a first version where i wanted to check out how the game mechanics work and how people react to it.

I'm running on an N4 with KK 4.4.4 and hellscore b47, most kernel settings default.
To be sure I'm understood, I solve one shape and before the transition to the next set of shapes, there is a noticeable pause.
This is a good concept. There’s a lag also when rotating the outer shapes. Though this might be because of my slow samsung galaxy tab.
Overall, this is a good gameplay.

hm, well it could be that what you think is a lag is actually my poor description and/or implementation?
The playing mechanics should be: you rotate the outer shape so that it is correctly aligned. IF it is so, then you tap anywhere on the screen to "submit" it. if it is correct you get the next shapes.
(The reason why it cannot "auto submit" the moment it is correctly aligned is because then it would be trivial, you would just rotate it until it snaps in - thats why you need that extra "next shape please"-tap)
The possible rotation is actually split into 12 different angles, so there are 11 different angles with which shapes can appear.
The best way to control it is to drag with a finger on the border of the screen (or use two fingers as in normal rotation gestures). you have to drag the finger a bit until the shape snaps in to the next one.
so could it be that it's because i didn't explain the intended controls enough? If so, do you have any suggestions to improve that, or how to better explain the way to play it?

I may not have read it if you wrote it. When initially testing something like this I go for intuitive. The extra tap isn't.
What about doing the the auto next based on a touch release. You know when the shape is being rotated, the screen is being touched. Can you detect when a finger is removed? There would be no more rotation and wouldn't allow just spinning randomly to get it to snap as you describe.

Looking it up it's called a touch event using MotionEvent class with ACTION_DOWN and ACTION_UP

That is actually a quite interesting suggestion! I tried it out, and it feels kind of nice. it also makes the game easier, maybe i have to reconsider the additional time gain... I created a debug build, would be nice if you would download and try it and tell me what you think ( you have to deinstall the appstore version first, since this one is signed with my local debug key)
It now checks the correct alignment each time you lift your finger from the screen.
Edit: i think that is a gamebreaker because it makes the game way to easy. you just have to swipe very quickly on the border, and due to the "auto" check you always get the alignment correct very quickly.
another version would be this one. here it is also checked on touchUp but if the alignment is wrong it jumps back in the initial state. that makes it even a bit harder, but also requires more focus and looking.
what do you think?
OK, going to leave this one up to you. I didn't catch a difference between the two in how they play. The first one appears to be snappier and jerky, as opposed to the second one being smoother and slower.
Either way, you nailed what I was saying. What do you think? I think this is far more intuitive. Now you just need to figure out the levels of difficulty.
The ultimate would be to have the shapes and colors auto generated with random attributes. You would not have to map anything out, the app would automagically create them.
Ok i found some issues that caused the touch input to be way to sensitive or way to unresponsive - that fixed i got some feedback that the overall control is way better now (especially on high res devices).

I still like the idea, but it brings some new issues that i need to figure out. Once you got the current control mechanism people don't think to much about it - so i'm not quite sure if it is really that much benefit. I will test that out over the next iterations and try gathering more feedback (about the current control and about how much people think it's good/bad).

That is the second big point on my todo list. but i don't really know how to start.
The best way that comes to my mind is to define different "base shapes" that are then just colored randomly. but that again would require alot of different base shapes to keep up a good variety?
at the moment i add hand drawn shapes with each update (around 170 now and using .gif its not that of a size problem anymore)

Gear Watch Designer - Cool!!

Just tried this and, while there are some tricks, it works pretty good. I know have a watch face with just about everything I want on it that looks like I want it to look. Took some experimentation but that was fun. If you know what you want and can't find it anywhere else, give this a try. And I still haven't figured out all it can do. Working on that.
Just designed a watch face that shows an analog between 0500 and 1000 then a digital for the night. Day shows battery %, day/date, and steps. Lots of fun!
AND!! Here's Here's how I got the Layer effect - two watchfaces for different times of the day - using GWD. Tricky but not hard:
- Select a Background from the menu on the left. It appears in the work area.
- Select the one entry you have under Timeline in the bottom left of the space showing your Backgrounds. Then go to Properties in the upper right and rename it Layer 1. Not necessary but I found this easier to work with. Everything you put on this layer will appear above this label.
- Select what components you want on this layer. I wanted a Night and Day face so I use Layer 1 as my night and put a digital face on it. Add complications as needed. They will all appear above the Layer 1 label on your Timeline block on the lower left. When done you will select the time frame they will NOT be visible. For me that's from 6 am to 10 pm.
- To highlight the chosen INVISIBLE times, select a start time from the light grey area on right. Say I want my digital watch to NOT show from 6 am - 10 pm (time shows in the scale on top of the grey area). - -- Put your cursor over the 6am block on any of the visible lines and hold the left button on your mouse down. Scroll around to select the time you want Layer 1 to be invisible. They will appear in green when selected. Now hold the right button down over one of the green squares and select Remove from the menu. This is tricky because the program doesn't always work right. You may need to try several times to get it the way you want it. Play with it. This will Remove that time frame from when this particular face will be visible. You can move the veritcle line on the Timeline around to make your face viable. Now start your second layer.
- Select another Background and label it Layer 2. It will appear over Layer 1 and hide what you have place on there but there will be a white outline for the items you've put on layer one, so keep that in mind. - Now put your desired items on this face as you did Layer 1. I chose an analog face.
- Once you've done that select the time this face will be INVISIBLE as you did Layer 1. I wanted this to be invisible during the times Layer 1 WAS visible so I selected 10 pm - 6 am and Removed that.
Another thing you can do is use the same background for each layer. Simply do NOT select the Layer 1 label on the timeline and it will appear all the time. Only the components will change.
- When this is done test it using the Run button on the task bar at the top of the screen. This brings up a test area that shows your face. Under Condition there is a sliding time adjustment so you can see what appears as what times. Use this to make sure everything shows when it should according to time.
- Satisfied? The build your face using the Build button on the task bar (2 down from Run), save, and you are good to go.
The program will ask you if you want to Save or get a certificate and such. I you don't want to put it on the Market don't worry about it. You can now load directly from the program to your watch. Or you can upload it to the Market to sell or share.

Great idea! While it's mostly pretty intuitive I did struggle on some of the things I wanted to do.
I once made a cool complicated animation, with many objects appearing and disappearing during the different time periods and battery levels.
But it was so big, that editing it was going extra slow....
I guess, for more complicated watch faces, GWD is not enough. For some crazy animated, complicated watch faces the native app is better.

I guess, for more complicated watch faces, GWD is not enough. For some crazy animated, complicated watch faces the native app is better.

No idea. It's my first time doing any of this. All I wanted was a couple of useful watch faces and I got that. I think anything more complicated will have to wait a bit in my case.

[APP] Jotter - The Most Practical Note Taking App

Instantly jot down stuff by doodling on your lock screen without even looking!

Jotter works like a real-life notepad where you can instantly ‘jot’ down anything by doodling with your fingers. It sits on the top of your lock screen so when you press the power button, you can take notes right then and there! No need to browse the app drawer and no need to carefully type using little keyboard. Just scribble on the screen and double-tap to save it. This can even be done without looking!
You can personalize the Jotter notepad by changing the pen color and the ‘slide to unlock’ bar color. This means that you can even take ‘secret notes’ by setting these colors to completely black. This way, you can jot down anything in front of anyone and nobody will notice what you have been jotting.
Jotter can be used in many situations. Some example use-cases are listed below:
• You are talking with someone and want to note down an important date or information without disturbing the conversation flow.
• You are on the go and see something which you need to write down for reminder.
• You are at workplace and have to note a non-permanent, unpreserved piece of information e.g. a code, number, etc.
• Someone is dictating you his phone number or address.
• You meet someone and want to write down his name.
• You hear a unique word or phrase or product name and want to jot it down.
How to use it:
When you enable the app using the Switch, then every time you try to unlock your device using the power button, Jotter will appear on top of your lock screen.
You can write notes there with your finger. Press twice (double tap) on a written note to save it. To view saved notes, slide up the screen from the ‘Slide to unlock’ bar present at the bottom of the screen. You can dismiss the Jotter notepad by using the ‘Slide to unlock’ bar.
In order to have a completely ‘secret’ and inconspicuous notepad, you can customize the colors to black or other dark colors. (Remember that the ‘Slide to unlock’ bar will still be there but will become invisible so do it with caution).
Note: This is not a replacement for your lock screen and will sit on top of your default lock screen.

I really urge the xda users to try out this app because this is not like other conventional notepads. I have based the development of this app on my actual real life scenarios and I personally find it helpful at my workplace.
