After the phone rebooted and failed when i click "Software Update" i get "no firmware" and it won't let me retry. Also should we even be trying to update from what I'm reading this update was not approved or released by Samsung.
. .
Yeah that doesn't work after every reboot i get "The Update was not completed. No update is applied to your phone". You hit "ok" go to Software Update and "no firmware" and i did change the date. So from this stand point i have no way to even check for a update.
I beleive what is happening is that the phone some how tries to "resume" the update when you click the 'software update' button. I get the "failed update no update" message every time i reboot my phone, and i have the 'no firmware' error. I restored a backup from yesterday, the failed update message went away and i could get to the check updates screen but it would fail to connect to the servers (and still threw me in to a 24h wait ((has anyone found the file/setting that has that info in it?))) so i restored the backup i did before i restored, and i got the failed update error once. but not anymore, and i am now able to check for updates and download it.. (still fails on prepairing) ((keep in mind this latest restore was earlier giving me the 'no firmware' error))
sorry for the runon.. im way too tired to care right now... blasted phone is tickin me off LOL its 1/2 updated and im not sure if its working 100% anymore
Same issue
I have the same issue. I updated my phone before going to bed, and I do not remember if it was successful or not. It looks like it was, from my build# and the fact that I have QuickOffice app now. I originally received the text that an update was available.
Since the update, every time I restart my phone (10+ times) it says "Congratulations! New software update for phone now installed. Phone is now ready for use".
However I just get the "No Firmware" when I try to update, where previously it would only allow me to check every 24 hours.

For this particular situation the only thing I've found in my research is to do a factory reset, which "solved" the message reappearing every time the phone boots and allows you to check for new firmware.
I was having the exact same issue and was able to use the Kies Mini to update. Super easy and worked perfectly! There is a sticky about how to do it in the main part of this forum

Did you try this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8394579&postcount=4 ?
It clears the log that doesn't let you try again for 24hrs, so this may also fix your problem. It's worth a try, anyway.

Ok, when I get home from work I'll try Kies. With all the issues reported with it, I was going to wait and see if they released an updated version.

Yeah this is not a problem with the whole "only able to check for updates once a day" thing. This is one of the many problems from the OTA attempt at an update.

I flashed to the leaked Froyo instead of messing with it anymore.

Don't know what went wrong, but every time I try to update to 2.3.6 I get an error image and then it reboots. Done this 5 times and its driving me crazy

Are you rooted? If so what modifications have you done?
Have you uninstalled any of the stock bloatware, even if it was uninstallable without root? The update requires all bloatware to be installed.

Seriously people, search before you post!! We have covered this at least 10 times!Anyways, If you have deleted any of the AT&T bloatware the update will fail. It is STRONGLY recommend that you flash the fkz's to get back to stock before you apply the update, especially if you have rooted and performed any mods. Just be sure to re-root and apply the 4ever root mod to keep root over the OTA.
Or just wait for lfaber to make something awesome with it!
Thanks, I just now stumbled on the other thread's also saying the same thing my bad. And also another question why is the bloatware so important?

It's not that it's important... it's that the update file is filled with a bunch of patches, some of which are for the bloatware, and so if the bloatware isn't there the patches don't install and the update won't begin (it checks everything at first.)
Oh ok thanks
It's not working for me too . I removed alot of the bloatware yes any solution beside restoring fxz ?

Sadly not...
you can just wait for custom ROMs to be based off of 2.3.6 and flash them... this update really isn't very major.
How can I tell if it's even trying to update. I manually started the update about 4 hours ago, but it doesn't look like anything is downloading. When I click on system update again, it says an update is currently being downloaded, but according to 3G watchdog, my wi-fi usage isn't changing. If I turn off wi-fi, it says the download will resume when wi-fi is back on, but the percentage is at 0%, and when I turn wi-fi back on, it stays at 0%.
If it's going to error out, does it not say something? I'm not getting any indication that it failed. Is there not a progress bar in notifications or anything? At first, I figured the server was just busy, but after 4 hours, something should have downloaded by now, right?

A reboot can't hurt.
Ok i had issues upgrading to 2.3.6 tonight.. I realized i had stupidly uninstalled YahooContacts.apk and FMRadioService.apk... As we know Titanium can't restore these. However what I did do was this:
open /cache/recover/last_log in a text viewer
scroll to the bottom, it will tell you what is causing the installer to fail.
Mine i could clearly see it couldn't find FMRadioService.apk I took the .gz file from the titanium backup directory, un-gzipped it, renamed the .apk to FMRadioService.apk and placed it in /system/app I then re-tried the update, it failed again, repeated with YahooContacts.apk
and viola... all was well..
-t
I tried that. The progress bar that was stuck at 0% went away after reboot, but it's still not downloading anything, as far as I can tell. That's why I was wondering if there is any kind of progress bar normally.
I'm thinking that, since I'm at work, our wi-fi is blocking it. I can't get it to download over 3G, so I guess I'll wait until the morning, when I'm home.
BTW, if your phone dies ("Battery Low - Cannot program" message) while trying a rollback to 2.3.5 try the following procedure. It's risky but I was able to bring my Atrix 2 to live:

My phone dosent want to update because at one point I was using TB and removed chrome from my phone and installed the app version from play store. Now when I go to update, it reboots into recovery, begins installing, then fails. When I check to see wy its not updating, it gives me a long string of numbers and letters and says .. chrome.apk .. and then it says update aborted.... so I was wondering if anyone knew a way I can fix this because I have a backup of chrome when it was a system app but when I install it, it still does the same thing.

Try rebooting after you're done and see if it did update. A few people have reported that the update said it failed, but when they rebooted the update actually did work. If that fails, then you can just update through RSD.

Yea, I've tried to update it tons of times and it keeps failing because of chrome not being a system apk. I did try the option on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33028928 but, realizing I was on 4.1.2, it failed again and since not using a nexus 7, I'm not sure it will work anyway. I could go with RSD but I was hoping there might be another way to fix it without wiping all the data.
I used SHIELD RAM to reflash back to stock (was previously rooted on KitKat) which went fine but I can't convince the Shield to get any updates, it just says "Your system is up to date".
I tried doing a factory reset from Recovery Mode but still nothing. I wondered if something had gone wrong so I ran RAM again and did another full restore but am still having the same problem. Help?
I did reset erase all data in options and that appeared to fix the problem for me. What happened was the OTA update wouldn't download

Thanks eikast, I've just tried that too but the problem remains. If I go to Settings -> About Shield -> System Updates -> Check Now it simply says "Your system is up to date" even though it's running 4.3 (build no JSS15J.01.00.14422.0068)

I'm in the UK. I managed to get some help from Josh at Nvidia and he reset the OTA flag their end and the update popped up instantly. It seems Nvidia add devices which have had the update (or think have had it) to a 'group' which can then prevent those devices seeing it again.

This has happened to me quite a few times... simply use it a few days, it will eventually tell you to update. Other than that, I've never gotten it to manually see the update.
Clearing the data for Google services worked for me.

flash current kdz and then you can update
worked amazingly well lol
I flashed the latest firmware with ODIN (N915TUVS2DPG2_N915TTMB2DPG2_TMB.zip). Rooted and working well. Began getting a firmware update message to install the same firmware. Asked to install now or later. Actually tried to install it and it just failed and went back to normal. A couple days later it would pop up again.
Using titanium, I froze the following:
Security policy updates 4.1.46
Software update 1.5.04
Software update 3.1.12
I then wiped my cache only in TWRP. I no longer get the firmware download message, however I get one minor notification that shows up when I go to the phones "settings". Notification says "Software updates. Tap here to update the firmware to the latest version and use the latest features." If you tap it, it does nothing. I can close it but it will show up again. It also shows up under "About" in the device settings. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything so far. Just a minor annoyance. Not clear why it is happening at all.
I am on the T-mobile version of firmware. Anyone else experiencing this? Thank you.

Could be because Samsung likes rat ware.
The security could be getting used to aid in O/S updates.
Given that you've frozen them and they could be tied together .............

I have noticed that things "frozen" by Ti backup still can have an effect.
Example I run Nova Launcher and lock down Samsung's launcher.
I then start having weird problems including restarts.
Since I'm rooted, I back up the system and remove the Samsung launcher.
Much better.
