Today I received the update from AT&T for my Captivate that supposedly "fixes" the various GPS problems. However I cannot get my phone to lock at all. I am outside where I should have no problem seeing the satellites. One thing to note is that I did use the Lbstestmode settings suggested in several different forums a while back. Is it possible that I need to change something to get back to where it was in the beginning?
I downloaded "GPS Test" and the GPS on button in the corner always shows yellow no matter what I do. I made sure my phone is set to "Use GPS satellites".
Is there anything else I shoudl try?

Hi I have a problem with my GPS and I blame it all on TomTom, not sure what has gone wrong...
I decided to try the TomTom software I got with the phone, since Google Maps felt somewhat limited. I installed it, downloaded the free city map and started the program.
It told me it couldn't find the GPS and after trying a few different settings I got it to work. But it didn't get a signal, so I decided to test Google Maps and see if it worked there. It didn't and same with WiFiFoFum, in WiFoFum it just says reconnecting.
I checked the assisted GPS software to see if I needed to update the data there to help the GPS along. There should have been downloaded data there, but there wasn't. When trying to update two things happen.
1) Connection failed
2) Download starts, reaches 100% and says "connection failed"
Since all this happen after I installed TomTom, I have now removed that software and re-booted my phone. Didn't help so I have been trying a few settings to see if I could solve the problem. I haven't managed so now I turn to this community.
So is there anyone who can help me out. The GPS is quite useful so I hate that I can't use it...
Thanks in advance!
Usually a soft reset will solve the problem.
Just to remind you that it can take more than 30 minutes (first time) before Tomtom get a fix.
Strange that it didn't work well for you, mine worked right away, but I didn't care for it...
On my Nexus One, when I was inside and couldn't get GPS lock, and also out of range of WiFi networks, Google Maps would still get a rough location based off the cell tower. It was good enough for the weather widget to get my current location and to use Google Maps to find stuff around me.
Now, on my Inspire (rooted with the Desired HD Euro rom), I can't do that. If I can't get GPS lock, and WiFi is off or I'm out of range, it just says my location is temporarily unavailable. It's not locating me from the cell tower like my N1 is. I have the option checked in the location settings to use networks, but it's still not working. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks.
I've found that it works on EDGE but not 3G, anyone else noticing this?
same
Somehow you fixed my problem on my HTC Inspire 4g, W Absolution 3.7 ROM.
I turned off 3g and went to EDGE, pressed the locate button on Google Maps..and TADA! I was pinpointed in seconds. After I turned back on 3g and it seems to work now. THANKS!
I have a TMobile LG MyTouch 4g, E-379. I had originally had CyanogenMod 7 on it, but had GPS issues of not connecting, losing signal, etc. Tonight I found a fix for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12976312&postcount=1579
I applied this fix, and received 2 errors during the 2 similar "If" steps, saying that there is no space left on the device. I rebooted the device, and the GPS was automatically turned on. I noticed I also had no service. I waited a couple minutes, and nothing. I've tried turning airplane mode on and off, trying to scan for networks, and turning on 2G only, to no avail.
I went into recovery and recovered the image I backed up before this fix. Still no service, and GPS was still on automatically. I went back and recovered an image from March, still the same. I got desperate and ended up installing stable CyanogenMod 9 (which I'm enjoying so far) but still the same issue is occurring.
What in the world did I do, and what can I do to fix it? Google and searching the forums have brought me nothing, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I put it back to the stock ROM and noticed an icon at the top indicating a SIM card error. I dragged down the menu, and in big letters, it says "SECURITY ERROR"
Hrm. Anyone? I'd hate to have to warrant this out.
since installing cm10 i have had the wrong location for everything. i have recently upgraded all my routers/bridges to dd-wrt, and normally i would assume it is an isp/wifi/google issue. the problem is that my phone has the correct location when connecting to the same network. if i go outside, turn off network location and hook up with gps only then my location goes back to accurate in some apps. others apparently remember the network info.. did tons of searches with no help. really stuck on this one
Hi,
I have one of the S3's released from day one. After one of the last OTA updates I have not been able to keep a good GPS signal, and sometimes it takes a long time to get a lock. I've tried everything, GPS Status app, cleared Google cache, new roms nothing seems to fix it. I have read some people saying its a hardware issue. Does anyone have any experiences with this before I try and get a replacement? Thanks!
pretty much the same here. original pre-order lot.
both mine and my wife's S3 GPS are completely dead. no locks at all. no software things ive tried seem to work...
noticed right before OTA JB update. we have completely different phone use habits.
Simple mechanical GPS fix involving tightening the back frame of the phone
Hi,
I have a simple GPS fix that worked for me. I'd like to mention that the solution may not work for all but it did work for me after I tried just about every fix possible. For example I flashed back to stock, performed numerous battery pulls, used many of the AGPS patches, made numerous edits to the gps.conf file, reprovisioned my phone, checked different ROMs, uninstalled/reinstalled Google Maps, cleared data for Google Maps and Google Service Framework, and so on.
I tried all of the above methods because my GPS would take forever to get a fix both indoors and outdoors (I know it usually takes longer to get a fix indoors), wouldn't hold the fix while navigating and my GPS apps kept stating "Searching for GPS", would see 20+ satellites but would never lock on to them...man it was really frustrating. I just about gave up.
However, as I was trying to follow another procedure to fix my GPS which required me to pull my battery I noticed that when I removed my back cover that the back frame that has all the screws was slightly loose on the left side. Once I tightened them all up my GPS worked immediately! I've tested for a day and I consistently got a lock on the satellites in about 2-15 seconds depending on my location. My navigation also worked and wouldn't cut in and out.
Like I said it may not work for everyone but I would recommend that if you have a GS3 definitely check the back frame of your phone and make sure everything is secure. I've tried my GPS on the stock and CM 10 stable ROMs and I have achieved GPS locks consistently.
I hope this helps. Maybe this has already been shared but I figured I would post in case some of you haven't seen it yet.
Cheers.
