Cruz Reader Hacking - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Cruz Reader useful apps: Version 0.01, please check out:
This is *nix archive with a script that installs some well known apps on the Cruz Reader!
It may be that rooting the device is needed before, maybe not, have only tried with a rooted reader...
(want to go to the Market anyone?)
To give the due credit: This was inspired and uses parts of the RPMscript archive for the ePad zt-180...

Cruz ereader needs Android market
Just bought the Cruz ereader. Are you able to get Android market on it? I downloaded the Flash APK and installed flash 10.1. Everything installs fine but flash doesnt work. Is there a work around? If you having trouble using youtube try downloading the youtube apk from Velocity Micro Cruz support site. With a few tweaks this can be a good device. Specifically flash, android marketplace and overclocking.

Market, Maps and Gmail on the cruz

Yes, you can install Market with the pushgoog.sh script. Thi should work on machines with android sdk, and as available from the download link in the slatedroid post that is referenced in post #1 above.
The pushgoog.sh script should work on linux and Mac machines as it is, for windows boxes the script can be easily changed into a batch file (pushgoog.bat or so).

script, rooting and all that stuff is foreign to me. I'm a newbie when it concerns computer stuff. I was hoping had an APK file ready to download/install.

It is now somewhat easier, since all is needed to install Market on the Cruz using Windows XP is available through two downloads linked here

(copy the link and remove the spaces)
but still no apk, sorry.

I just got a Cruz Reader. It is very slow and unresponcive. I flashed the Macho Rom. Market works and Gapps work. If someone could develope a dounut rom based on something like ZXdonut. It would be perfect for this device. It would make this device usable. Right now is so slow and makes me think of G1 running Froyo.

Velocity micro cruz reader??
Yeah I ordered one last week can wait to root it and I wonder if there will be any chance of 2.1 or 2.2 coming to this reader???

I just picked up one last night from BestBuy for $99, and I used a modified ROM from user PandaBomb over at SlateDroid that roots the device upon flashing the ROM. I'm happy with the device...for simple web browsing and twitter/facebook updates it'll be fine. I installed Pulse to have a Flipboard-like app and I'm happy with my e-reader . Here is the link to the forum over at SlateDroid that will guide you: http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?topic=12820.0

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out, as I just picked up the Cruz Reader at Best Buy as well! It's a neat little device to be sure, but I was upset when I discovered that there was no pre-installed Android Market app installed... (And the Cruzmarket is a bit it a huge let-down for me)!
I thought I read something about one it the (hack/mods/???) not working with the R103, but the 101 & 102? I'm new to Android hacking, but have messed around with a few other devices in the past (moto razr, Dash 3G, etc), but don't want to brick this thing on my first try!
Anyone else have any recommendationsof what to do with this little device?

Hey methusalen, check out http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?board=126.0 . we have a buzzing little community over there working on various scripts, roots, and roms; it makes the Cruz eReader r101,r102,r103 very awesome! just read up and PM me if you have any Q's

yeah the slatedroid forum has some good stuff....but it's kind of dead...no one really is developing any further or anything..so if there is someone out there who is developing and whatnot...please pop in over there and help some people out...
i'm a completely amateur developer and i've done very little...so i could use some back up people

trying to recover a cruz reader r101
i have a cruz reader that i have been playing with the past few Sundays. though it is currently stuck in a boot loop AKA its bricked. i found what looks like a good way to get ADB access[/URL] were i hope to finely get it back working.
no recovery loader to use
works best on at 800mhz with android 2.1
has issues with hidden SSIDs
ill let you know how it plays out next week.
will post links when i can

I am stuck too! I downloaded the ROM update and updated the Cruze. Then I downlaoded the java SE SDK and the Android SDK and the ADB drivers. The write up said to install java SE on root of your harddrive at C:android-sdk I did not have that file on my laptop so I created and installed there. Then the write up said to install the android SDK there and the ADB drivers as well. So I extracted those two files to C:android-sdk-windows. then it said to open the SDK manager from that file and so I opened it and then it said to plug Cruz in via usb. I have done this but it seems everything is being installed on laptop not Cruz! HELP PLEASE

any news on updates 2.1 for the cruz reader?

Android Market - I used the JGM ROM, rooted and had blank Market. Acessing market via laptop showed my Cruz listed, but no serial number. Gave up, but then by luck a week later, I went to the Market on my laptop, found an App and selected, and selected my Cruz as the device to download it to. 2 hours later, sure enough the Market was working, and that select app downloaded.
It almost seems like you have to prime the market first for the Cruz via a computer...

hey guys how are you all? okay, so i need some help, im a complete noob when it comes to android and the process of rooting?:/ ive had iphones since the 3g all the way through to the i4 and ive not had any problems learning about jailbreaking or how its done and infact jailbroke all of my iphones, but long story short i just got the optimus 3d today..or yesterday now should i say..i think ive figured out android to a certain degree, some things are still a mystery to me though, such as how i back up my contacts to my pc and how i get the first (far left) page to actually be the first page instead of it always returning to the middle page and havin to scroll either way?!? but thats for a different post, my question here is howdo i root my optimus 3d? i have an acer laptop running windows ultimate x64 if thats important, the o3d is on tmobile uk although i believe its unlocked(theres no tmobile branding or custom tmobile firmware to my knowledge), its running android 2.2 froyo, version 10b-jun-16-2011. a simple quick walkthrough of all the programs needed and the method to root it is what im after,id so very much appreciate it,thank you in advance. Hi Rob, firstly welcome to Android, be patient, root will arrive shortly.
However, unless you need to do some SERIOUS hacking you probably do not need root to do stuff in Android you needed to jailbreak the iPhone for. ie, just put mp3 files on you device's mSD card and they will play, same with videos, same with games. You don't need to bypass the market (as in itunes) you just need to alter you settings to accept none market stuff. A couple of clicks and your done!

thanks for the welcome. so this might be another stupid question, but what is the 'root'? what does rooting actually do and is it a necessary requirement, i wont be using any custom software or writing any of my own programs, im happy with the way it is id just like to get the odd paid app for free from time to time unless theres a reason to root to get free apps or whatever(i dont always pirate i usually stick with free apps unless theres a major diff between the paid and free versions, for example just this afternoon i paid for perfectlockapp from the marketplace). also off topic but the phone has 8gb internal sd, around 900mb internal memory and ive got an 8gb external sd card. all the apps ive installed were saved onto the internal memory but i figured out how to transfer them to internal sd,but the internal sd has a capacity of only 5.93gb useable.how do i get the apps to goto onto the external sd card or cant i do this?if i cant, what is the external card for? cheers guys.rob

Need extra info
I to am trying to root a P920, I've been reading through this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
and it talks constantly about putting the phone in debug mode.
How do I do that?
Second I'm supposed to get the right drivers for the phone, but I don't understand where.
I have the android SDK installed with all the optional bits and Eclipse integration. I've also just downloaded super one click from the other thread.
Thanks
you find the drivers in LGE folder in the internal memory of your 3D phone or search for this LGUnitedMobileDriver_S498MA22_WHQL_ML_Ver_2.2.exe
for debug mode--->settings-application-developer-debug
Nic you're a star. I just figured out the debugging thing, so was on my way back to post that I found it, but had no clue about the drivers
Cheers
Ian
Right, I seem to have rooted my phone
Here is some additional information in case it helps.
Previously I downloaded the Android SDK and Eclipse plug in. The eclipse plug in isn't required for this, the details are above.
I put it in debug mode as detailed above.
I downloaded the file SuperOneClickv1.9.5-ShortFuse.zip from the link in my post above.
Now here's the useful bit. I couldn't get my PC to recognise my phone, it complained it couldn't load the drivers. So I went to:
edit: ok I can't post external links yet, on lg.com there's a mobile support section and a support tool.
and downloaded the support tool. This allowed me to download and install the LG P920 drivers. Once this was done I reconnected my phone to the PC and ran SuperOneClick.exe then clicked on Root.
The dos box flashed up about a dozen times, and I was about to disable debug when it said "Success!"
I'm new to all of this so sorry for being a noob.
Once I root the phone. Does this automatically imply I also unlocked it? If not how do you unlock the phone? I know there's some way to unlock them without needing to use unlock codes.
The carrier I want to use (MTS) is so puny they have a terrible phone selection. I'm thinking about rooting and having the LG Optimus 3D and rooting it. I had a friend who's done such to a HTC Desire, but it seems every phone is done very differently.
Edit: Okay, I I found the topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406 about unlocking the phone which I think makes sense but it's still difficult to follow and it seems a handful of people are having issues with it.
I can't post on that topic as I'm too new. I'm looking forward to getting this phone, rooting, and doing that unlock though once I know for sure that I'll be able to do it.

[Q] [ANDROID] ROOT HELP: Motorola Backflip with MAC OSX

Hello All:
I have had lots of fun learning from you guys and lurking. I have modified my homescreen and love running Go Launcher EX on my backflip. But now, I need more!
I have tried, without success, to root my Motorola Backflip on Mac. So I've come to the experts. I know its not the best android phone, but it's what I have until I am eligible for upgrade.
I have searched and found similar threads with no answers. Perhaps they were overlooked. I cannot use unrevoked because I own a Backflip.
Is there anyone here who has done it and can help? I would like to root, overclock and perhaps whatever the most stable Cyanogen rom is?
It is currently running the Motorola provided 2.1 upgrade with a few apps.
I am on Mac OSX 10.5
MB300
BLUR Version: 3.0.1390
Firmware. 2.1 -update1
Kernel: 2.6.29
Build number ERD70
I have downloaded ADB / SDK for Mac as well.
Thank you all, Any help is appreciated.
Surely one of the XDA geniuses has a solution to this...right?
Hey, I have neither the phone or a Mac but since I'm prepping to upgrade my friend's backflip from 1.5(!) to whatever the most stable rom is, this caught my attention.
I don't have any direct experience to offer you, but I have thought of a workaround to at least get you on a similar page as everyone else.
Your issue is that you have a Mac combined with a very unpopular phone so you really can't find simple easy solution to rooting and Rom(ing) your phone so I'm thinking that if you can switch your platform to something with universal instructions you can then go to the basics of using ADB to root your phone as I'm sure that there are guides for that.
So I'm thinking that you would use Ubuntu or an Ubuntu deriviative (as there are a few guides about achieving root and ADB through Ubuntu) and then find instructions for rooting your phone through ADB. It's a little bit of a workaround, but it's not as complicated as it sounds.
Best thing about this method is that you don't have to change anything to your computer as you can use a live CD or a Live USB to run Ubuntu from and then when you're done remove the disc or USB and reboot your computer and you're right back to your normal Mac experience.
First thing you'll need is to find an Ubuntu version that you want to use. I'd recommend 10.10 as 11.04 has some bugs from what I hear and instead of using Vanilla Ubuntu, use one of the skinned versions that come with lots of the visual and effective tasks already implemented (Sort of like HTC Sense over stock Android 1.6) I use Pinguy OS, click here for the review or a really popular version is Linux Mint.
Once that's done, look up instructions for using a Live CD on a Mac. Here's a Set
(You only need to do Step 2 & 3 once you download Linux Mint or Pinguy OS)
Now once you finally have Ubuntu/Pinguy/Linux Mint running,
review this Thread here on getting ADB set up for Ubuntu.
After that, you should be able to find instructions for rooting the Backflip using ADB and then you can play with Rom's to your hearts content.
Okay, I know this looks complicated but it's really pretty simple, it's more reading than actual work.
Read and learn about Ubuntu/Pinguy OS/Linux Mint
Download Version of your choice to a USB or a DVD
Boot into a Live version
Follow ADB in Ubuntu instructions to install it
Find out how to root your phone
Root Phone
Download Rom to root of card and install, enjoy and have fun.
Just remember that do all of your reading before you start, don't get confused about the different versions of Ubuntu because Ubuntu is just the basic not quite as pretty while Pinguy OS and Linux Mint are Ubuntu with some nice gloss and etc...and finally remember that nothing gets saved on your Live USB or Live CD so once you restart the computer, it's all gone so make sure you are rooted and satisfied before you exit the Session.
Once you get all the reading done and comprehended, it's probably not more than 15 minutes of work, if I wasn't in the process of moving, I'd follow the directions as best as I could to see how it works, but I probably won't be stable until next weekend at the earliest.
Good luck.
I thought about doind somethign like that but its just seemed like a REALLY roundabout way of doing something that looks so simple.
I will hold out for a more simple solution but if nothing comes up I guess that may be my only option...
Thanks
Sorry I couldn't come up with something that was more direct, but that was the only way I could think of to help you.
Why don't you try here? This Site is much more active for the Backflip and maybe you can get some better assistance.
i have a moto backflip rooted and running cyanogenMod 6 and it was a pain in the ass to root and have the rom put on. if you google "update motorola backflip 2.2" you should see something with the name "tech geek guy". he gives u step by step procedure to loading the rom. since we have a moto backflip, we cant use the z4root since the backflip doesnt allow outside market apps to be installed. but once u have this rom on your device, u can install outside apps. anyways. u have to use the one click method or watever its called. i used a pc and not a mac so this is as much info as i can give u. sorry.

[Q] Can you download APPs from Android Market with the Google Android Emulator ?

Got my first smartphone as a gift (!!), and it has Android Market! Solved!
Hello,
I'm using a rooted Creative ZEN Touch 2, powered by Android 2.2.1.
Unfortunately, it doesn't support Android Market.
I've tried using MarketEnabler, and download the Market APK files, but it still won't boot, I get a white screen, and then the Market immediately close.
So I've thought of using the Google Android Emulator; I don't have the Java Developpement Kit now, so before installing it, I want to be sure if this work:
Using the emulator, will I be able to download APPs from the Market directly to my PC, so that I could put the APK file on my device?
I'm getting tired of searching for APK files manually all the time.
Thanks you very much! If anyone know any tips that could make the market works on the ZEN Touch 2, please let me know!
*I know there's a way to make it work on the Creative ZiiO, but that sound complicated, and probably won't work with my device.*

Polaroid 9 inch tablet

i picked up the polaroid 9 inch internet tablet (pmid920 model number) for $88 bucks today from menards that came with a keyboard and the case and the tablet. I dinked around with it for a bit doesn't seem to bad besides not having the android market, im ok with the tablet seems decent for the price and the basic needs i will be using it for. But when searching the internet I can't find a single review or a guide to root it or any custom roms. Has anyone else purchased this tablet on black friday? or heard good or bad things? Any help how i could get root and flash a rom or atleast get play market? Thanks guys.
specs:
android 4.2
1.6 Ghz Dual-Core
Ram: 1gb/DDR3
Res:1024x600
Int Mem: *gb
Ext Mem: Micro Sd
I picked one up as well and also have been un able to find any info on how to root it or install Google play.
polaroid pmid920
I also got one today but im hesitant to open it without reading a good review. How is the performance? Is it sluggish or does it respond well? I also just bought a sansung galaxy tab 3 7.0 and im disappointed because of how slow it is. Can anyone confirm the response of this tablet? I want to be sure thid time before I regret openning the bix. I searched for other sites and it doesnt seem to be one of the recognized models by android. Thats probably why theres no google play.does it allow installation of apps from other sources? Thanks for any review ir response!
I got a similar deal yesterday; Insignia Flex 8
Having the same problem with rooting. Seems like not many people try with these budget tablets.
What chip is it running?
I wonder if it's similar to the flex and maybe the same method will work for both?

Try su in a terminal and make sure it works. Though I think you should be good root checker reports ok.
Root files
I take no credit for these programs and files
I used the modded usb windows drivers in file below to install
the drivers for the PMID920
I used Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v32 to root the device
selecting option one, and following the on screen instructions
it did not take the first time around, I tried every selection I could
I even un rooted via all methods, but every time it said success
I would check with root check pro and after about the 8th time the damn thing worked.
Try selection ( 1 new ) from the get go, maybe you wont have an issue like me
it kept looking for an ric file, but it would not create it, it seems to have worked
after I created the file.
Now we need recovery, google play, 4.4 kitkat, just messing !
Please post your results.
Edit; got gapps installed, this things turning out to be alright.
needs gps though !

Have you found any custom roms with Google play and the stock apps that work on it?

Yeah, well, I just installed DPInst in the folder. Was there something else I should do?
Google play works
Google play works great with the stock ROM!
1 root device as above.
2 download JB gapps, unzip it on your PC and copy the system folder over to this device sdcard/download folder
3 find and install root explorer, copy apk to device and install, run it and click parent folder until you are in root directory
now click read write, instead of read only on the top left to give it permission to write files, navigate to sdcard/download where
the JB gapps system folder was copied, click copy with root explorer as paste it in your root directory where the system folder is,
it will ask you if you want to merge the folder click yes and let it finish, once done reboot your tablet and you will be prompted
to set up a Google account.
You now have Google play, Google tts, calander, voice search, gmail and a brand new toy!

What device are you trying to root the tablet from,
From a windows device you download and extract the USB driver files
you may need to run the driver setup as administrator, after install check
and see if you have adb device in control panel, system manager, it should not
have an exclamation sign on it, if you need lead device to driver folder.
Also try another USB port, and try to unplug the device and plug it back in when the program is looking for it.
Im returning mine, as i found at walmart they had a 10.1" tablet for $99 that had good reviews on amazon. This tablet seemed to be hit or miss for the 7 inch version after finding reviews on amazon. awesome that it was found how to find root, i just couldn't stand the screen as it seemed u had to be straight on with it or it was hard to see. for a extra $11 i figured i'd return in to menards and go with the 10.1" tablet. Here is the link for it.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/TRIO-Stealth-G2-10.1-Tablet-Dual-Core-with-16GB-Memory/26973760
any info on this one?
Is there any dedicated sites for tablets? as xda seems clearly for mobile devices..

Help please
I'm trying everything I have seen here but my 920 won't root, I get a deameon started message sometimes but nothing happens. I'm using a windows 7 machine, installed usb driver and still nothing. I've installed craynogen mod on a tab 2 10.1 and then this little tablet stumps me. Anything would be helpful. If you need more info just pm me.Thanks

I got this tablet just last night. I truthfully wouldn't mind if it couldn't access the market, except that the stock youtube player on the device doesn't seem to be able to play playlists, just single videos, it won't auto-play any playlists.
I've downloaded the android market (Gapps-2.3.4.zip) on the device and installed it, but whenever I try to open the market, it asks me to add an account, and clicking yes just closes back to the main screen.
I tried Lionideas (sp?) steps, downloading both the root by recovery and usb driver. I installed dpinst-32bit.exe, as well as running adb.exe (wasn't sure if both were necessary, or if any further steps are necessary.)
After that, I enabled USB debugging on the device (there's a notification on the top status bar that it's running), connected it to my PC, and ran the runme.bat file. Selecting option one, it tells me to connect a device with usb-debugging enabled, and halts there...as far as I can tell I've followed the steps, can anyone enlighten me?

[Q] Can not install on USB Storage or SD Card problem.

I have a Nextbook 7, September 2013 model which has a AMLogic chip inside it, not sure which one, which has a stock rom, but is rooted using motochopper. I have on my computer Android Ultimate Toolbox Pro, which I downloaded either off here or off a google search result. The message Can not install on USB Storage or SD Card is coming up whenever I install certain games on Google Play. If I install them from LEGALLY OBTAINED apk files, it just says App Not Installed. I have tried the smdl2tmp.asec fix, but according to the logcat which I just made with Android Ultimate Toolbox, smdl2tmp.asec can't be made. I have got certain apps to install by decrypting the apk, editing the AndroidManifest.xml to say internalOnly, signed it with a pre-made keystore thing, and they work, except for Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing. The game runs fine, but I can't sign on to Google Play Games using this app, as the certificate doesn't match. (I Think.) If someone could help me, that would be great. I also attached the logcat I made to this post. I'm on Windows XP at the moment, but I have XUbuntu on a seperate HDD in my computer, with dsixda's Android Kitchen. Thank you in Advance.
