I recieved this email from Samsung USA Support in regard to my questions on the GPS fix and the FROYO 2.2 update yesterday 9/14/2010: GPS fix soon... nada on the FROYO
Dear Gary,
Samsung continues to listen to customer feedback on GPS performance expectations on launched Galaxy S devices. We are currently testing software updates which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available this September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, we are unable to speculate when/if this software FROYO 2.2 might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.
Should you desire additional assistance resolving this, we invite you to call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357 between the hours 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.
We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Sincerely,
Technical Support

That makes me really sad
To be honest though, i'm pretty happy with the phone as is. Froyo is more a topping for me than the ice cream.
Samsung general support
that's it, that's exactly why i'm not buying anything else (phone) from Samsung. their software support is terrible, they give you a super phone and after that they forget about you. Once I bought their flagship of that time - innov8, and I was glad I got rid of it, their firmware support afterwards was miserable.
Hopefully the Galaxy S firmware and kernel will work on our phones.
I don't think we can really "rely" on any of the manufacturers to push these updates with any speed. For me, and I think for a lot of people, one of the main reasons I went with the Capy and the Android platform, was because of the great Devs here, and their ability to get things out faster, and without all of the restrictions found in the mfg's updates.
In my opinion, we can't take what they said too seriously regarding Froyo. We all know they will release Froyo.
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with Eclair, and aside from the ability to load apps onto SD, I doubt there will be any noticeable difference between 2.1 and 2.2
just my 2 cents
Edit; Maybe the "IF" means that Samsung will pass over Froyo and is developing Gingerbread instead. Would you dump a ton of money into an OS that will be "obsolete" within the next few months? I wouldn't

What is so bad about your captivate software besides the GPS issues, I must ask?
I have been using the original JF6 firmware since launch and have not had any other problems rather than a browser hiccup here and there.
As soon as your rooted and have enabled side-loading your good to go.
I really havent had the urge to flash other ROMs because I am getting everything I want out of this one. (And that is coming from someone that used to flash winmo roms every other week)
I think the phone itself is great and really have no problems with it. The GPS I can live with until the update, though it does bum me out. However, I got this phone for two reasons.. 1) to sync with Linux (my default desktop operating system) and 2) because it said it was compatible with my enterprise email.. the latter is false. Until Froyo (apparently) I'm locked out of my calendar. That's a huge problem for me and borderline false advertising if you ask me. I'll be patient through Sept to see if they deliver since that date keeps getting thrown out. I hope they don't disappoint!

I have no problem sync calendar with my coporate exchange server. The only sync problem I have is sync with Hotmail contacts (doesn't sync) but Microsoft does say it is a known issue for Android 2.1.
I don't think samsung will poss over group for gingerbread. for one it has been promised after froyo was passed up on, was it the moment?
also I know a samsung engineer, he works with the cdma phones and doesn't know the schedule for the cappy and vibrant but quoted that they are working around the clock to get the froyo updates released and there wouldn't be an unusually long wait. he also says that he can't give information that's not officially released so I'm not gonna bug him any more on that.

Froyo is really important to me. Google likes to make a lot of their new cool stuff (Voice Actions and Chrome-to-Phone, for example) for 2.2 only. I bought this phone so I could be on the cutting edge of geekdom (subject to the limitation that I'm stuck with AT&T). I won't be happy until I can play with all the latest toys.

You mean besides the huge speed increase?
The people who have actually tested and benchmarked 2.2 paint a very different picture than your assumptions. The speed improvements are very significant, which will go a long way to addressing the Captivate's other big issue (besides the faulty GPS): lag.

I'm not saying that 2.2 is not faster than 2.1, my assumption, is, put a Captivate running 2.1 and one running(when it's available) 2.2, and I suspect that most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference performance wise.
I dont put alot of faith in benchmarks. Just for example, I ran Quadrant on my Cappy, pulled a 866, installed the lag fix, I'm now running over 2000, I cant see ANY difference at all, everything opens just as quickly as it did before the lag fix
2.2 In general is faster... but not the sami betas... they r slower as they have not gotten jit working.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
That's also my observation. Benchmark scores often mean nothing and very misleading. I have a Moto Droid before I got my captivate. After I upgraded the Moto Droid to 2.2 (a couple of weeks ago), I see absolutely no difference performance wise. My friend is also using Moto Droid and said the same thing.

Anyone still on 2.1 is officially obsolete. Google has released a ton of new features for froyo and gingerbread users. Including google instant, new gmail app, and other things.
Which leaves 2.1 users with old software never to be upgraded again.
I still haven't flashed (due to warranty issues) but even if I did I would be upset because it still is based on buggy pre-release software.
Based on the epic 4g leak the froyo should be version 2.2.1 so new roms would be 2.2.1 instead of buggy 2.2
Why doesn't samsung care about their customers!
Yea, I share your sentiments. I tried most of the 2.2 leak ROMs, but most had troubles. The list of apps that don't work on 2.1 and below is growing. I wonder if Google Maps 5 will be the same way.
I really thinking about just buying an unlocked nexus s but then i realize its still samsung!!!
I returned a samsung tv i bought for my family for christmas because they suck so much ;D
The more I read about this (and the GPS malfunction), the more I think that when my Captivate arrives tomorrow I may just take it into an AT$T store and demand a refund and contract cancellation.
What we need is a Samsung Customer Service number we can start calling to voice our opinions. Any have a good Samsung number for this or a similar purpose?
Yes more than half of android devices are "obsolete"...
Return it? Because your too lazy to flash your phone with functional software instead of the junk Samsung and att gave us? I've been rocking the beta cm 6.1 for quite awhile and blows the doors off any 2.1 variant that was out there.....and as far as voiding your warranty its almost impossible to brick these phones so its completely easy to flash back to an out of the box state. So quit whining. This is what makes android so great. Take a phone with amazing hardware with crappy software and put amazing software on it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-GT-I9000 using XDA App
For one, I'm not lazy or whining. I shouldn't have to flash my phone to get basic functionality out of it. The GPS should work without my having to invest in searching through a myriad of unauthorized solutions and risk not only voiding my warranty, but bricking my phone. If I wanted to put this much effort into making a phone work I would have stuck with WinMo 6.5 and my Tilt 2, which I know inside and out already. I moved to Android hoping I'd no longer have to spend so much time dicking around with my phone just to get things to work. You know, the whole "Droid Does" marketing ploy? The main reason I agreed to buy this phone was because I read on several different sites where Samsung said they were definitely going to update it to Froyo. I understand that their timetable may be off, but they should at least keep their promise. Is that too much to ask or expect?
Samsung promised Froyo by the end of the year for the US Market. They still have a 20 days. Their stance has not changed, so I don't see what anyone has to complain about.
As for GPS mine works as good as the one on my Bravo - my Tracks, Turn by Turn are the same. If your GPS has problems, take it back. If you try multiple phones and still have a problem, then make them switch you to another phone.
everyone knows they won't make the end of december date
It's not that I don't want to try custom ROMs. However, all the custom ROMs are built on leaked (and often buggy) Froyo ROMs. The sooner AT&T releases an official release Froyo ROM, the sooner we can get a stable (or more stable) custom Froyo ROM....hopefully they release the source code too. There's code in the custom ROMs that comes from all sorts of other ROMs lol
Ditto^^^ Well, according to Mr. Smalls, we're just lazy, whiny jerks with no valid excuse for not wanting to use a custom ROM on our phones.

Am I correct that you don't even have your device as you're typing that?! Try it first..a lot of the stuff you read isn't what you will experience. I.E.: my gps has worked a charm since I picked mine up in mid October..it's an excellent device. I've had a Samsung DLP for more than 2 years and it works flawlessly. People like to rant..find out for yourself for chrissake. It's nice to be happy with a cell device for the first time in awhile for me..only complaint is att dragging heels on 2.2. I'm too busy and old (55) to have the energy to do all that stuff that many do..but it's also nice to know that if I get tired of waiting and get a wild hair, I'll root and flash when I'm good and ready. Meantime I think the Captivate is a great companion
From what I've heard, I think that it might be the carriers that are delaying the update. Don't know if this is true or not but I kinda doubt this is Samsung's fault.
@fldude, Thanks for the encouragement. I used to love fiddling with my WinMo phones and I enjoyed modding my Tilt 2 to where it runs great and does (almost) all I ask of it. I'd still be using it if WinMo wasn't a dead platform and the thing wasn't so laggy. That saidI was hoping the switch to Android would mean I finallly would have a phone that I could tinker with if I wanted to, but didn't HAVE to, like WinMo. I guess reading through these forums exposes one mostly to the negative since most people only post when having problems. I brushed most of it aside, but the GPS issue really stood out because I use GPS-enabled apps a lot and it works so well on my Tilt 2. I can't wait for the Cap to get here tomorrow so I can start playing with it. Thanks to running XDAndroid on my Tilt 2 I already have some idea of what to expect and how to use it.
I will say this, reading about rooting and flashing of Android, kernel this and apk that is a lot more intimidating than working with WinMo. I never hesitated to edit my registry, but modding Android sounds pretty scary.
By the way, does fl mean you're a fellow H-D rider?

Also Frustrated
I have been following the forums regarding the so called Froyo release and I have to say that I am rather frustrated as well. I actually called AT&T last week to complain about the delay with Froyo with Gingerbread's release within a few weeks. Not to mention Honeycomb on the horizon.
In speaking with one of the techs he also shared his frustrations and was hoping that it would be released in early January. I told him that it was understood that it would be release at the end of the year and he confirmed that same understanding. However his sources revealed that it is now for early January. Let's hope this is true, but as you all know we have been given so many empty promises.
Furthermore,I read an article that Samsung is undecided whether to release Gingerbread for the Galaxy devices. For a product that has been so popular and successful, what are they thinking? Or maybe they are not!!
Either way my fingers and toes are crossed for Froyo for now...
Samsung posted this updated installation guide on their website this morning. IMHO if it's going to happen in December it's going to be this week. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I897
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...2349485/ATT_I897_Captivate_Kiesmini_Guide.pdf
I think they just added the instructions for recovery mode. Seeing as how "Some of" the Canadian Vibrants are reporting corrupt storage issues after trying to upgrade via kies mini.
With all of the gingerbread action in the past week, I don't know why anyone would even bat an eye at an official froyo release. If you aren't running a 2.2 rom based on the leaked versions yet, you are severely limiting the speed and "snappiness" of your device. In short, while you guys wait for Sammy to roll out their "official" 2.2 update, we'll be running GB.

JH7 w/ Voodoo is faster than any ROM based on a leaked Froyo build (from my experiences). I haven't tried the i9000 based ROMs however.

I too use my phone for work. And I also cannot have any "hiccups". I can be without it long enough to flash a ROM and then re-setup the stuff I need. That process takes less than 30 minutes nowadays.
If you stick to a true Cappy ROM (not an i9000-based one), then you won't experience hiccups...at least I don't. Battery life is a slight issue, but really, when are completely without the means to charge up some?
I've flashed maybe half a dozen times since I can't afford a bricked phone. I'm picky about flashing. But I'm also very picky about having a phone that is quite impressive hardware-wise, but almost completely crippled by the lackluster software. While Froyo isn't the most awesome thing ever, it is a major improvement over Eclair.

Though Im not gonna think twice about flashing 2.3... Can't wait for a working version.

thats understandable but i would say in my experience there are less hiccups with most custom 2.2 roms than there are with either stock 2.1 rom.
Not to mention on the business front Exchange is much more stable and functional for me on the 2.2 roms vs. 2.1 stock.
Axura, Assonance, Chronos all very stable.
I thought the hold up was the carriers on the update. But I think Samsung has been really slow in the release of 2.2. Samsung not AT&T has been the problem all along. Don't you think one of the carriers would have tried to be the first to have their device on 2.2 to sale through the holidays.
more speculation here, but I suspect there has been some back and forth between samsung and att. Like att put it through their testing procees. (we know it is pretty extensive) and asked for a change or two. 'caus I'm pretty convinced that samsung just checks that the phone powers up and gets signal with no care as to the quality of signals it is receiving... I am certainly intrigued to see what they come out with after "working" on it for so long.

The carriers don't care that much... OS version as a selling point matters ZERO to most users unless it brings some major feature. Most feature improvements are minor and don't affect most users - they are not hackers or flashers. For every one person visiting phone Forums, there are 10 others that own the phone and just use it.
2.2 has been out for Galaxy S and Armani - so it is really done for the hardware - we haven't seen any Froyo leaks in a while either - the hold up is the carriers - Samsung was probably late getting it to them, and now they have to give it their blessing.
The Vibrant Froyo was released recently but pulled as it corrupted internal storage. So T-Mo was first, and i guess AT&T will be second.
I also think this updated doc is relevant to the Froyo release - we didn't see this doc with the previous Kies Mini update and there was no Emergency recovery option - they are definitely getting ready to push something new.

No...certainly not AT&T...they always push the I-phone harder than their Android phones...Can't say for any others selling Galaxy phones though..
Seriously...I use my phone for my work and business as well, and there are quite a few stable 2.2 roms out to use.Hiccups...are always possible...but most times..it's because of a bad install that causes more headaches than anything else..or something left over on the system too. No way in hell would I wait on either Samsung or AT&T for another bloat filled update. Not to mention...all of the bricked phones that happened with Kies last time around...Your much safer getting your upgrade longing filled here..than any OTA update....at least if you get it from here you will get help fixing it...Good luck doing that with AT&T or Samsung...you'll be out a phone for a few days or weeks..

Samsung knows exactly how long carriers need to validate and test the firmware. If they intent to release the Froyo on schedule, they should have pushed the update earlier. After all, carriers test updates from all manufacturers like Motorola and HTC, not just Samsung. If Motorola and HTC can release Froyo, and subsequent patches, in time for their phones, there is no reason Samsung can't if it is capable of.
This just tells you how somethings never change when it comes to firmware update from Samsung.

I think you may have answered your own question. It's likely that Samsung put their development resources in the Galaxy Tab and let the phones wait. They already have our money.
I'm surprised there is no official GB considering EP1W is supposed to be "official"
EP1W has been around for quite a while (even before we got our hands on the leak). If it is indeed the official version, I'm surprised it hasn't been pushed to our phones already.
ya it does seam kinda odd. kinda makes me think that the "official" leak isn't so official. rather an almost final official build.
It's AN official build, but we won't know if it's THE official build until things start rolling out OTA.
Even if it is the official build, they tend to go through massive amounts of testing before they become available as final internally, and then the OTA process starts.

Yeah I am gonna guess that this is not the final version. The thing that I wonder is just how much is gonna change. i didnt have the leak on my phone for long, but it was really good. The radios I have had on since they were ripped individually and they are really good (disclaimer: my radios were good before now the signal is stronger)
Verizon and Samsung are probably doing extensive testing on the build because they don't want to pull a fascinate again. It cost Samsung millions.

^ This.
My guess is that it's being tested. First, it gets Samsung's approval. Next, it gets Verizon's approval. Finally, it's scheduled for OTA and rolled out.
Both Samsung and Verizon are notoriously slow to move these processes along. But, having said that, Verizon does have the most reliable network in the USA and I think some of that has to do with their scheduling of roll-outs.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the latest iPhone 5 rumors are saying that October 4 is launch date. Verizon has to assume a big spike in network traffic as a result. It's very possible that they're holding OTAs until after they see how the network handles a true iPhone boom (since their launch of the iPhone 4 wasn't exactly a boom to the network).
I still think it is before the i5 rollout, but it is looking more and more that my prediction will fall short
So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?

The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Um I did? - and even the XDA board didn't give me the topic yet so meh.
And someone has this starting to run on the Fascinate?? The Captivate is THE phone that seems to get the most love besides the Vibrant for this range of devices.
And I don't care how we get it... as long as someone is able to wedge it into the phone.
You know, it's open source.
Any of you asking for it can take a crack at it
I am seriously inexperienced, but this might be a good start to a programming career..

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps
leaked from my FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.

That's a bit harsh don't you think? The Cappy dev's are some of the best ROM developers for that era of android phones.

not mention i've seen them pretty active in the galaxy nexus forums... might be because they have different priorities right now? once they figure out the newest phone they'll be able to come back and help us?
If you actually go poke around the Fascinate forum there's one guy who claims he has it running but hasn't offered any sort of proof. I think he's just looking for attention, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

If he does have it running, it's the SDK release and it will be slow as molasses.
