GMAIL update - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

New app in the market: GMAIL.
This update separates gmail from the Android OS, allowing you to receive updates to it via the Market.

Are there any significant differences between the gmail that comes with the rom, and the one from the market...I would assume the answer is no as of the time being...let us know.

Edit: I installed it but have none of the plusses I heard about :-(

Does Froyo for captivate fix unparsed URLs

I have two froyo questions to see if the community can answer them before I try to set back to factory and upgrade.
1. URL Parsing
In J6 touchwiz could not parse this url into a hyperlink from email nor from calendar entry.
https://companyx.webex.com/xyz/j.php?ED=156264002&UID=479348601&RT=NCM0
Any idea if froyo can parse this (r-click, copy link location, send to yourself that url in an email to check)
2. edit email replies
In J6 when replying to email I could not edit the original email any idea if this is now possible in froyo?
anyone? I'm hoping I'm not the only one that wishes this was fixed.

I think it fixed it email, but not calendar. People were installing stock 2.2 calendar and that fixed it.

Thanks alphadog.
I am bumping this post again because it is driving me INSANE that Samsung can't parse url's and I can't believe more people aren't being driven equally nuts by this. I get webex meeting requests in my calendars constantly and cannot click on them....
I feel your frustration - I want the phone numbers for con calls.
My temporary workaround is Gemini calendar - it has a widget and an alternate the calendar. The alternate calendar parses everything. I don't like the alternate calendar as much, but i do like the widget - so i can click on it and bring up the event and click a link.
I did report the calendar issue to Samsung when the captivate first came out, and actually had a support person log it. So maybe 2.2 will fix it. If not, I will install the stock 2.2 calendar.
I seriously thought I was the only person experiencing this. I'm on 2.2 and still having the problem in email app. The urls look broken up for the most part right?

The problem we are discussing is the URLs, phone number, address not being "clickable" like in other places. Touching a URL should launch a browser; touching a phone number should launch the dialer, etc.
Since 2.2 is a beta, it is hard to say what it is supposed to do.

Did you go into settings and tell it which items to parse? It works 100% for me. I can click on everything - phone, email, www and map links.
Happy to provide screen shots if you can't find settings.
Thanks ... you have just saved me a lot of frustration every week.
This is amazing on several levels.
One) that it seems so very easy to fix.
Two) that in all the other email and calendar programs I tired including touchdown, it is not fixed, not in the calendar nor in email.
Three ) Given number one, that it just seems so very very odd to me that there are so many thousands of these phones out there and not more people are complaining on xda-developers in particular of this completely messed up feature. I feel like a lone voice prehaps.
I wonder if this is purely a messed up thing on Captivate and not on the other galaxy variants?

It is broken on others as well - I tried the i9000 2.1 ROM months ago -when i first go the phone - hoping it was a captivate bug.
I think that that most people buying the phone are not using it for business - so calendar items don't contain much data, and they don't miss the functionality.
The iPhone was missing this until version 3.x - so it took apple almost 2 years to add it as a function. I am surprised Samsung overlooked it. But, if 2.2 comes out and it is missing, i will install the stock Froyo calendar and be all set.
BTW - it is an easy fix - but for some reason they did what apple did - although the calendar data is available - they treat the location and body fields like untouchable text - you can't even copy what is there. It is just a matter of telling the calendar app, that these fields are readable and to parse for phone, url, email.
I hope you send a bug report to their customer service email or something. The more people that complain the more likely they fix it.
I would hope that they have 1000's of reports of this already.
But assuming they don't or don't have enough to form a critical mass where the bug gets fixed, I am willing to add another.
What is the procedure for submitting a bug report to Samsung or do I submit it to AT&T?

I have not found a formal method. I emailed their "contact us" link on their web page, and posted to their twitter and facebook accounts.
Like i said before, it took 2 years for apple to fix it - even others at work that were iPhone users didn't mind it as much. It just depends what you are fixitated on. GPS works OK for me - not perfect, but not a show stopper. Others feel differently.

[Q] Replace htc email app with standard android version?

The email app installed on the HTC One S is horrible compared to the standard android app when using it for activesync/exchange.
It doesn't display email properly and doesn't have message advance and back icons. You have to open the menu to get to them.
Does anyone know of a way to replace it?
You could just install a different email app. I hear good things about K-9 Mail (have not tried personally).
I actually think the standard android email app is pretty bad for Exchange, since its meeting invites do not show time or place directly.
I've used k-9 for imap connections, but it won't do an activesync connection to sync my contacts and calendar, unless there's a new version that does that.
I switched back to "Enhanced Email".
I couldn't find a way to change the ringtone in the one that came with the phone.
I also didn't like that you couldn't move back and forth through the messages like mentioned above.
I see Enhanced Email is $9.99 in Google Play.
I got it for free when it was the app of the day for Amazon.
I didn't know there were any alternatives other than Touchdown.
I'll give it a try.
Thanks.
I fully agree with you.
I already complained a month ago to htc for the lack of html support for example.
They escalated it to their technical support with no answer yet.

What are you talking about? HTC email app has the html support. Its like basic feature!
At least my exchange server, the original ics one showed html while the htc one option is grayed out and not working.

I have three different activesync acounts on my htc one, and none of them display hmtl.
Also, the attachment don't display from the mail client. You have to download them and open them directly from a viewer app.
Weird. It works on my exchange activesync account. See attached.
Attachments work fine too.

When I had my Desire, I installed one of the ICS beta version (AOSP) and on that native ICS email client with the same exchange server, html support worked great.

Its definitely a bug in your email app since it works for me and other android phones. I would suggest removing the account and adding back if you havent tried that already. I would also factory reset and see if it fixes. if nothing, the only option is to get a replacement.

Thanks for the Info and efforts.
I did several factory resets with no change.
I also already had the firmware updated with no change.
I asked htc support about that and they escalated it still with no answer for more than a month.
Yet, when I enter an account which is not my exchange server like Gmail and such, I do get html support. That's why I figured the issue is related top my exchange server version...

Just out of curiosity, what is the version of the Mail app on your phone? Maybe this is not an issue in all T-Mobile US phones because of different version.

Stock email app NOT gmail

Anyone know how to get the old stock email app working on pixel? I've installed an old apk but as soon as I try and open it, it says to use Gmail and points me that way. Makes me feel like I'm using an iPhone.

Wow. Thats too bad. Guess I'll have to wait for a custom rom to use it again. Its still in Cyanogenmod builds, maybe its in gapps. Anyhow, I really liked keeping it separate from gmail.
Yeah. You may be able to build it from source from CM but sounds like a pain.

Why not just download another email app. Like Outlook, that one works well with all email accounts.
I'd strongly recommend K9 as an email app. Been using that since my G1 and it's still outstanding!
K9 or blue mail works great, I've used k9 for a long time, just switched over to blue, very hard to decide which one is the keeper ?

These guys are not actually correct.
The "stock" email program STILL EXISTS, and in fact, is actually INSTALLED on Pixel devices from factory!
BUT, google has merged its UI into the GMAIL program.
So you have two options if you want to use the "stock" email program;
1) Set up your IMAP email account through the GMAIL program,
2) DISABLE the gmail program, and guess what happens? The "email" program launcher icon shows up in your launcher!
HOWEVER, it really is a much better idea to use k9mail instead. It is far more feature rich.

Neat, I didn't know that! Still gonna use K9 myself but that's pretty cool!
Aquamail would be my recommendation for a mail app. Easily the best and easiest to use of the six or eight that I tried...

That's a good find but unfortunately doesn't work for me. My mail server wont play nice with the Gmail app so I can't even get it configured. I still tried to disable Gmail but didn't see the stock email app. I then installed a stock email apk and it installed but still gives me the same screen saying that Gmail is the new everything app

Aquamail Pro is nice, arguably better than K9, although it was just acquired by MobiSystems so who knows how future updates are going to look. Large companies acquiring small, indie developer projects does not usually end well for the app.
Security-wise, Aquamail, K9 and Nine are about the only third-party apps I'd consider.
I know this thread is now almost 2 months old.
what I"m looking for is a mail app to keep my gmail separate from my 2 exchange emails - and it MUST integrate with a calendar widget.
I haven't found one that works best. I liked the old "Mail" app - I could left swipe to delete, right to options - all your reply, reply-all, forward options right at the top of each message, rather than the options dots.
Outlook won't get sucked into my Google Calendar.

Aquamail - I tried just about every top email app. Also needed it to support Calendar, works perfect. I use the paid version and can't imagine a more customizable Android email client. Absolutely outstanding. Extremely reliable too.
Use Nine for Exchange. I've been using it for years, best Android email client.

Yeah, definitely for Exchange. I still prefer K9 for IMAP (easy to have lots of aliases) but Nine is definitely where it's at for Exchange. Great integration to Calendar and more!
It seems that only the Lollipop branch of the stock email app 7.0-x is merged into Gmail. Earlier versions of the stock email app, targeted for KitKat like email app 6.3-x, are still working. I am on CM 11 and the fresh installed email app 6.3-1218562 seems functional and wants to be configured with an email account.
However, regarding security concerns it may be still better to use an alternative mail client like K9. I ask me now how that one performs on low-level phones with weak hardware. All these super-rich features of that nice K9 mailing app needs surely hardware power. I noticed a similar behavior also on more recent Gmail versions. These are far more hardware hungry then older ones. That's the reason why I like the stock email app, - it seems lightweight and fast.

Latest Chrome Update breaks Stock Email Reply Function

Try to reply to an email and "Mail has stopped working"
Uninstall Chrome updates and you can magically reply again
Based on my mere seconds of Googling it appears a bug have been reintroduced with Android System Webview (which is now integrated into Chrome and is no longer a standalone app)
Great work Google you f***in retards
Go to Playstore. Uninstall both Gmail and Chrome browser. Reinstall both again. I hope this works.

Reported to HTC.
Now wait and see what happens
I've hit the same issue. Funny how it works, just when I'm traveling overseas and really need it more than usual. I'm trying to fix but not certain how to uninstall the Chrome update. Info I have basically seems to need to back out all upgrades.
Can we assume they will put out a fix for this?
Thanks for the info greatly received as my HTC U11 just packed up on emails. Did as you advised and back up and running, why do they mess with something that was working and never test it properly before releasing updates?
I have the same problem. I uninstalled Chrome updates and now HTC mail works again. However now Amazon Shopping and Underground doesn't work, requires update to System Webview which is now embedded in Chrome. So how can I revert Chrome to its previous update, since removing updates reverts it to HTC stock version?
HTC mail working well here, and Gmail too.
I don't have problems with Google Chrome! Is working well! Anyway, i don't use Chrome,. I'm using Samsung Internet Browser app with Adblock Plus for Samsung Internet Browse Safe on my HTC U11, because it's much, much faster than Chrome! My second browser is Firefox with sync Windows 10 bookmarks.
I had the same problem the other day on my u11 removed the latest chrome update. Worked fine for a day now I can't send and email or reply
I ran into the same issue. I uninstalled the Chrome update and am able to use the stock email app.
HTC reported it back to Google.
And Google likely will fix it in the next Chrome update
Android mail crashes with March 2018 Chrome release
After a week or two of not being able to reply or forward I uninstalled Chrome updates and low an behold mail worked.
Next day it stopped again so I disabled automatic updates and re-uninstalled Chrome updates and yes mail worked again.
Shame I cannot figure out what chrome version this is or even release date.
Looks like it is broken again? Cannot forward or reply to emails, but composing fresh to the same address results in a successful send. Otherwise it just errors out and says "unable to send messages"

Yes these are the versions I have as well. Noticed Android Webview is still at 61.x.x.x with Chrome installed, discovered I can disable chrome and enter the Beta program to get to Webview 66.x.x.x and the problem still exists. Replied and forwarded emails fail immediately, and will not send, but composing a new email works fine. Also tried setting up the gmail app to send/receive my POP3 emails and it had the exact same problem.... Sent and replied emails showed Failed when attempting to send
