[Q] Need help regarding battery issue Samsung GT i5801 galaxy 3 - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have been using samsung galaxy 3 for last 3 weeks. As a newbie as a android user I am really confused about battery back up I am getting. I am generally getting 1-1.5 days back up, with moderate use of, 5-10 shorter phone calls, 3-4 hours of surfing, GPS always off, background data/auto sync off and switching it on only I connect to APN. More over I feel that I am not getting the proper battery indicator reading also. It shows battery is almost over and shuts off, and when I switching it on it shows 30% is still remaining. This is utterly confusing. I dont know anything about rooting phones and all. So anyone there to help this layman?? Please. Thanx in advance.

the battery of our phone lasts that much only even mine lasted for 1.5 days
lot of reviews say that our battery lasts only 2days with normal use

yea... battery lasts for a day or 2 only.. android uses much power.. so its normal..

battery LIFE!!
Yeah battery lasts 1.5 days for heavy usage..
you can boost performance by installing juice defender like apps from market.
also by underclocking and undervolt you can save some power.
for battery calibration follow this, it helped me to boost my battery life as it eliminates the so called memory effect.

This is my moderate use. Few web here and there facebook, some calls/texts and instant messaging for a good 3hrs
I am running cog 2.2b5
Just wanted to compare battery life and post the rom you are running too
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
my battery life sucks. i get about 10% per hour....
What Rom are you using?
yeah my batt isn't too great either. 2 days on Cog V5 now. Each day has been roughly 10hrs with about 4.2hrs use. Each day I ended with maybe 1-2% left.
Is this normal? Froyo didn't help a bit. In fact it may have made it slightly worse.
When I flashed b5 ... it was great. Then I found my gps sucks on it so I flashed again and I found that the battery drains like water 1% every 5 mins! ( Idk what's going there) Then, I flashed again and the above post is my result and my gps still sucks. So maybe if you flash it again it might help. I re partitioned in odin as well.
I am using Froyo (JI6) with lagfix and I get a consistatnt 12+ hours of moderate use. I usually charge my phone every three days.
Cog 2.1.7
I have to charge my phone every night. I have used multiple roms from cog 2.1 and even cog 2.2 as well as stock and it all seems the same.
There is no way that is an accurate picture... there is no way you made phone calls or used the facebook app without it showing up in usage.... u may have gotten 40% out of 12hrs but you did nothing with your phone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
all my calls are usually short and yes i used facebook app and facebook browser as well.

I use tons of apps on my phone and the only things the show up in my battery usage are: Display, cell standby, phone idle and voice calls.
you need to recalibrate your batteries or flash from 100% as DesignGears had mentioned earlier.
i now flash from 100% batt life when upgrading to new ROMs. or do a search for battery calibration.
Not sure how to do a screen shot but Im running 2.2 beta 5 and I thought battery life sucked but it was because I was checking it constantly and playing with GPS.
Today, after recalibrating battery stats two nights ago I have dropped 3% in 3 hrs of standby and very, very light use.
Also, to recalibrate battery stats I downloaded terminal emulator and did the following
su
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin
I had drained it fully down to 1-2%, did the above commands, plugged it in and charged to 100%. You must be rooted to do it this way I would think since Im using su for superuser.
Yea, I recalibrate the battery on my 2nd flash. the first flash my battery was draining literally 1% per minute. So I reflashed (I thought something went wrong on my 1st flash) and recalibrated now it's normal again.
gocats7: Yup cog comes rooted
Cognition is awesome. With all the features built in, the att crapware stripped out I dont see myself ever running a stock ROM again. In regards to battery though, I think its at least as good as stock if not better. I havent had 2.2 beta 5 loaded long enough to really tell.
I've never had poor battery life. I did have that "new phone syndrome" when I got it and had to charge it a lot. But now I'm going around a day and a half on a charge with moderate use. I use wifi everywhere I can and try to minimize the time the screen stays on.

Have you found that wifi has been helping your battery life? When I have mine on I lose battery at ~5-10% an hour. With it off I lose 1-2% an hour. I have to switch it off nightly so that I don't have to charge my phone again in the morning.
Just the thread I was looking for...
I just recently bought a captivate that had the battery problems it seems so many are having with random shutdowns etc. I would get maybe 12 hours before getting the recharge notice. And that is with very little use. So, along with the advice from these forums, I had it replaced within my 30 days and immediately noticed a difference in the way the phone felt(if that even makes sense). It seemed like the screws were tighter, it was cleaner and it way out performed my previous captivate. Had me thinking I was given a display model or something.
So, to keep it short....I just plugged in after (for me) a very impressive 64 hour strech with moderate useage, some gaming and movie watching. Could not be happier with this phone right now. I cannot for the life of me figure out how such an impressive spec'd phone can use so very little power while locked. It makes me feel like a proud parent...lol.

I have actually found my battery lasts longer with wifi on. I only turn it off when I leave the house. For me the wifi seems to be a lot more power/data efficient then my data connection. I can use the phone all day on wifi and still have 20% left at the end of the day whereas when I've been out all day long using data I can barely make it home without it *****ing at me to charge the phone.

I have had the best battery life yet with Cog 2.2 Beta 5.5 and migrating my Exchange server to Google Apps Premium so I do not need to use stock corporate email app anymore. I am pretty happy with this so far although I have only used the new beta for a day so far.
As a bonus, I am even using Live Wallpaper.
27hr, just dropped below 30%. Love it

What kind of battery life are you getting?

I am getting absolutely horrible battery life on my MT4G. I took it off the charger at 9:30am, I have since made one 5 min phone call and sent maybe 5 texts, and checked a couple emails that i just deleted, other then that screen has been off the whole time, its now 4:40 and im at 35% battery. On my Vibrant with this sort of use I would still be in the 70s.
Under accounts and sync:
facebook updating every hr (just changed it to every 4 hrs)
google syncing just gmail, no contacts or calender
news every 4 hrs
stocks not syncing
t-mobile syncing (tried turning off but it just turns itself on again)
qik video chat syncing
weather every 3 hrs
yahoo syncing
Are you on wifi or 3g? Brightness? Screen timeout? I have an N1 and the battery life is pretty poor so I'm just curious apples to apples in terms of what else you have turned on.

I leave 3g on but i always left it on on the vibrant as well, brightness is at 20%, screen times out within a couple seconds
wifi, gps and bluetooth off
I get great battery life. Then again I am coming from a Vibrant, my battery was horrible on that device. I take it off the charger at around 8 am and by 6 pm I still have 50%

ever thought about turning off 4G? You don't alway have to have it on.
I get around 12-15 hours with heavy usage. My G2 usually gets 15-24 hours.
I saw this article the other day. I was thinking about trying it tomorrow.
http://androidspin.com/2010/11/06/double-your-battery-life-on-htc-droid-incredible-sprint-evo-google-nexus-one-and-possibly-others/
Don't bother with that battery charger hack, it's not going to do anything but waste your time...
I just installed SetCPU on my phone just for fun and have found that it recognizes a few lower clock cycles...I added a profile to lower the CPU when the screen is off otherwise at 1024-245 On Demand and I'm still plugging away at 20% battery when I would normaly be on the charger by now...could be a fluke, but so far so good...I'll keep this for a few days to see how it does.
oh, one other note, my battery life has continued to improve with every charge...the first few days I couldn't get through a full day and now I have battrey to spare...just had to get it conditioned with a few charges I guess.
I let the phone completely die last night and then charged it and at midnight I unplugged it. At 8:30 this morning when I left for work it was at 94% which was great but from 8:30 until now it has dropped to 83% and ive had one 3 min phone call and deleted some text messages, no browsing web, no listening to music, nothing. It seems like the phone will go through the 100-95% slowly but after that its in a marathon to get to 0%
I don't know how you guys are getting so many hours daily on heavy use. I get 7-8 hours on heavy texting, some web browsing and about an hour plus on the phone almost every night. 9 hours would stretch it and it would be on 10%.
I have my brightness all the way down and all the way down is just 11. Screen times out in 2 minutes and I have power saving on. I did the battery thing 3 times where I would let it go down to less then 14% or so then charge it fully without taking it off charge. Hopefully it improves as days go by, I'm just tired of carrying my charger to work.
myTouch4G (Glacier)
Down to 69% now at 11:15, have made no phone calls or texts since then, have just downloaded opera mobile but havent even played with it...lol this is riduculous
I can recommend that you guys take a look at what might be pinging the CPU. Watchdog (Lite) is great for this task. You can have it alert you when an app exceeds a preset threshold for CPU usage. Some apps just go rogue on you like Palin from time to time.
I've also noticed that there's wide variability in terms of how apps go into either idle or background states. Some apps will go into idle only if you hit the back key to go back to the home screen and will enter a background state (more active) if you hit the home instead. I've also noticed that the free, ad-supported apps require more CPU time. That's right. Hitting Google's ad servers, at least for some apps, and scrolling those ads, requires more CPU time than other apps, which do the same. I don't know whether to fault the devs in this case when coding for the ad retrievals or not. Just some things to consider.
I just got mine. I came from a Blackberry 8900 and an old 2g iPhone. Battery life on both of those was significantly better. I could talk for 8 hours a day on the BB and it would last until midnight-1am or so. The iPhone would only last until 10pm.
Using the MT4G, my battery life is REALLY bad compared to these other two devices. I can get about 5.5 hours of continuous talk time, tested yesterday on a conference call for work. But even with only calling for about an hour and some basic email checking, I can't go past 6pm without putting the phone on the charger.
Wifi is off, screen at 50%. Someone please make a big fat 2800mah battery for this thing. I use this thing for work, and I make over 4000 mins a month of phone calls. It's really annoying to have to plug it in whenever I have the chance.
im getting roughly about 15-17 hours and im using it (camera, blogging, facebook uploading)
this destroys the EVO i had
Heavy usage, I'll get around there, 7-8 hours...regular usage gets me around 20 hours..I'm using setcpu w/ profiles..

did you have similar battery problems with your old phone while at work?
i notice my nexus 1's battery is significantly worse when i'm at work since getting a signal is a bit spotty (35th floor) so it keeps searching around. when i'm at home the battery lasts literally twice as long while idle.

Yes definitely right about that. I have better battery usage when I'm off work. My department at work is in the basement. So the signal switches on and off the whole time I'm there.

I think I only brought my G2 into work a couple times so cant really comment on that but in the 3 months ive owned the vibrant, if i used the phone a lot during the day....i mean play games, texts, web, etc..id leave with percentage in the 50s, normally in the 70s, at 4 today i was in the 30s with the mytouch with barely doing anything, since i want it to last until the night i just threw it on the charger. it shows I have full signal (4th floor by window)
My wife just got an mt4g (I have a nexus one). I've noticed that her battery life seems to be just over half what mine is, and I actually use mine more!
When I looked at her Battery Usage display, Android OS was near the top with almost 2h CPU time after being unplugged for 6h. For comparison, on my nexus one, CPU time for Android OS is 4m13s after almost 8h.
Any good way to break that number down more and find out the source of this crazy battery usage?

Mine is more like 7%/hr, which is totally unacceptable, I have all sync turned off, except exchange... with my HD2 running Froyo, I could do 2%/hr with the same settings.... I am still trying to figure out what's draining my battery...
I have also noticed high data usage.. I've tracked it down to T-mobile's AppPack. I've never used the program but it's constantly draining away my data... Is there a way for me to remove the app or disable it?
Thanks!
Get Watchdog from the Amazon appstore to find out what's draining your battery. I believe it costs, but it is a thoroughly useful app
Don't think we can remove carrier apps until we have root...that said, you could try adb pull, but I'm not sure whether it will have any effect. May need root for ab pull, in which case we can't get rid of carrier apps :/ sorry

On my hd2, it was like 1% on idle on android, here it seems to be more , like 3-4% on idle.

its funny how some people report 0% battery drain in 9 hours and other get 3-4% drain per hour.....
please post how many charge cycles you went through, its important.
I am personally using HD2 and battery live is amazing. and its only 1250
this has the best battery life ive ever saw. I'm in 0ma all the time the phone yesterday lasted from 530 am til 7 pm at night with a lot of text and playing games like homerunbattle 3d. If you play that game you know how much of a battery hog it is. Best battery life. Battery was soo good i barely charged it went to work with a 40% battery and it easily made it through a day with moderate texting all day!!
Gotta say... coming from a TBolt this thing is like sex in a tin can.
Idle is 1-2%/hr probably. I would get 10%+ on my TBolt at times... if not more. It was bad.

Just wondering, when you go into battery stats and extend the graph, does your phone stay awake when the screen is off?...
Mine seems to be awake all the time even though the screen is off.
I got Watchdog yesterday, I didn't notice any apps with high CPU usage...
Me too.. I lost about 8%/hour in 2g standby mode... Totally unacceptable comparing to my previous galaxy s...
Hope next FW update will improve it ..

today is the first time I'm having issues. Only 4 hours since charge & down to 40%. The Awake time shows as 99% of Up Time. Is that normal??? Also, anytime I look at the task manager it shows wifi calling running even though I have it shut off
I've got an Asian model sensation (ie. 3g and not 4G model ) and I find my battery isn't really calibrated properly so its hard to comment on average percentage drop per hour. I've recharged my battery 3 times already and i find the battery stays at 100 percent for around 30 minutes of constant on web browsing, then it will drop at a rate of 10 percent every half an hour with constant use and will fluctuate.
To report on a rough usage breakdown, with all background syncing disabled, I managed to get 10 hours standby before my phone dropped below 10 percent. This was with 5 hours of screen being constantly on doing mainly web browsing on 3g and one 15 minute phone call using my wireless Bluetooth handsfree.
I can report the battery life with constant usage is better than what i got with ny hd2. Running android ROM, it used to do around 3 hours of constant web browsing before the battery will fall under 15 percent. In standby my hd2 used to drop around 1% per hour, which was quite excellent.

Those are the stuff I'm talking about, it appears that one of the settings and/or app is constantly using the processor, which causes the phone to stay awake even when the screen is off... I just haven't figured out which app is causing the problem.. I am suspecting it is one of the Tmo apps.
I'm looking at a full battery life of 11 hours, 49 minutes with moderate usage (some calls, decent amount of texting, some games). I use the app/widget "Battery Left" to do its own independent assessment of battery usage and life.
So far the battery reminds me of my early days with my Nexus One -- before I had it rooted and optimized and undervolted. Once rooted and optimized, I saw a good 50% increase (at least in battery life).
If you'd like some relief right now (before we get it rooted), I recommend Juice Defender on the market. It turns off data (among other things) every now and then to save battery, and with this I can squeeze out 18+ hours with moderate usage.
how are you checking the percentage? when I looked in the settings menu, all I see is a long green battery bar, no actual numbers. Or are you all estimating from that?
I don't monitor my standby time, but I'm sitting at what looks like 40% after 13 hours of fairly moderate usage during the day, I'm impressed.
Ive been getting about 9 hours out of a full charge. Had to put my phone on the charger today at around 4 o clock because it was dead. I dont have much more info other than that. I will keep an eye on my processes over the next few days. I have only 3-4 cycles on the battery though.
To check the percentage of the battery life u have to download some battery widget in the market.. I.e smart battery monitor or battery percentage s.th like that...
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
You can also check battery level by opening Phone and dialing *#*#4636#*#* and then select Battery information.
I'm using Juice Defender and I have to say it really does the job : my Sensation lasts More than one day and a half (30min calling a day, texting, Android Market, Angry Birds...). Without the app running it would last a day (Angry Birds drains...).
Juice Defender says it is increasing battery to 1,53% and it is very close from reality.
I've been owning the phone from 24th of May.

I am running on roughly 7 hours at 78% of battery left. Been using the Internet a lot (Facebook, some Drop Box upload/download) and the Wifi is on all the time when the tab is not locked/standby. I played a little bit of a basic game as well (Free Flow), so it isn't graphically intense. I am by no means the most experienced here, but in my opinion, that sounds like some decent, if not very good, battery usage..

I used mine on Friday for 10hrs,tons of browsing,I turned the screen on and off many, many times, video calls for roughly 10mins,music,games for 45mins and at the end of all this I still had a 42% left.
The device is the P3100 wifi+3g it is rooted; I was only using wifi,so no 3G at all, I also had the tab on airplane mode with wifi constantly running,so no 911 calls.
I am running the latest stock rom,it is rooted and bloatware free,I also limit the background processes down to none,1 or 2 max.
So far I am very happy with my tab, although wifi is still spotty.

Yes, my screen is usually on about 6 to 7 hrs. And my battery life is about 15 to 24 hours.
I wonder those said their battery can stay for more than 1 day, how long was their screen on?
My guess is although the battery can stay long time but the screen on is only about 6 to 7 hours.
If yours only 5 hours maybe the gsm signal was not good. Try to change to 2g only. Or change other provider.
Hey thanks for the reply i use 2g sim only and I'm 24x7 online in 2g gprs i guess the gprs can also consume that much battery I guess I'm i right????

I am sure there are people who use the tabs for different things,if you are studying or reading a lot you will be able to see how long it lasts on, for users like me that turn it on and off pretty often the battery lasts maybe longer. I use it a lot for hours and hours, but it is never on for more than 1hr.

I felt that having Sim card inside the 3100 drains the battery pretty fast. I was not using much of 3G/GPRS connection. So after removing the Sim, I found battery usage reduced drastically. Overnight, the battery used to drain by 7 to 8% in standby mode with Sim card inside.
I don't understand, how people can comfortable use tablet with screen brightness at 0% or even 20%... it's mystical to me..If you buying tablet, you want to get good screen quality, good battery life (even at 50-70% brightness), smooth performance and so on...I have 2 tablets, ipad 2 and Samsung 3110. I really love my samsung, but battery life totally suck on it, when you compared to ipad...
Not a good comparison, iPad has a bigger battery

Nexus 5 battery drain - new battery, new ROM, still persists

My beloved red Nexus 5 starts acting up... the battery drains extremely fast. Some weeks ago, I could barely make it to 2pm without having to recharge after unplugging. So I got a new battery (directly from LG, so definitely a genuine part) which improved the situation, but didn't completely solve the problem. Additionally, I flashed a CM 13 CAF ROM (using myfluxi's kernel) onto the N5 - I enjoy it so far, but there was actually no further change converning battery life.
Right now, the phone is at 10% after being unplugged in the morning at 9am. Wifi, bluetooth, GPS and mobile data were constantly on, cell signal was mostly perfect, wifi was connected for about 3h, bluetooth was always connected to my Moto 360. Screen on-time is about 2h and I listened to music using GPM for about 2h. The battery settings do not indicate any app using up too much battery power - it shows the display at 15%, cell standby at 10% and then several apps.
What do you think - a Nexus 5 with a new battery should make it through a day, shouldn't it?
I remember my first Nexus 5, back in the days with a G watch, making it through a day without any problem with 15-20% left when I plugged it in before going to bed... because of that, I start to think if there might be a bad electronics part, like the display backlight or something on the mainboard, using up too much power without being noticed by the OS. Is that possible?
Thank you very much for your advice!

Read and post in the battery life troubleshooting thread stickied to the top of this forum, it will help logically determine what is using your battery.
You have a lot running at once, so difficult at the moment to solve your issue. It's better to turn things on/off one by one to make logical conclusions whether it has any noticeable effect.
The best logical way to conclude if it is a hardware problem is to go fully sock no additional apps no root etc, see if it 'drains' by itself
If not hardware, then 99% of the time it is a bad app(s) keeping your phone awake
This is likely not the case, but have you checked the CPU settings? I've only encountered such a drain while using performance governor together with overclocking.
Same here
I have the same problem and I have been banging my head about it, I don't really use my phone for anything much else than a phone and I kept having at least 3 days of using it with no problems.
Now the phone barely lasts 2 days and even switches off in the middle of the night...

In the OP's case, his drain is likely caused by having GPS on all the time. That will absolutely devour battery life, so he could save himself some grief by turning it off until he than your phone turns off occasionally. First guess would be the power button going bad; that is generally the reason for needs it.
For you, who knows? You've not given any information, otherthat type of behavior

Yes, sorry about that I was a bit annoyed at the phone. I found and fixed the problem. Go to settings > apps > disable google fit > click yes when it gives you some notifications about how you'll lose data or stuff like that > and click force stop at the end for good measure.
I am in my second day now of battery life at 59% with a looooooooot of talking today , I mean more than usual so it is definitely a fix for me. Hope it helps
Take care gents

Again same problem
Hi all,
Unfortunately I have better battery life but I am again losing a lot of battery.
I have a screenshot but I am unable to upload it sorry about that.
I use my phone mainly for calls roughly about 15 mins per day at the most in total ( not a lot at all I know) and I also have my bluetooth on at all times cause I have LG G Watch.
thing is that I have never had problems with the battery before. When I say before back in the day I still had my LG G Watch ( I have it for about 6-7 months) . Problem with the battery started roughly around 1 month.
Location is off, wi-fi is on on very rare occasions throughout the day when I need to check my e-mail and mobile data is the same. Navigation is used only if needed.
The real problem is that before I knew what was draining my batter now I have 79% of battery usage and I have 5 apps listed that drained each 1%
Android System 1%
Phone Idle 1%
Screen 1%
Google play services 1%
Android OS 1%
Where are the other 15 % ??
It is weird I really took pride in that phone and his battery life, I know that it is mainly because I don't use it as a regular used do i.e. gaming, facebook etc, but I still want to charge less than 1 time per 2 days or less
Thanks in advance
Regards
