cant boot into recovery - Captivate General

i jsut bought my captivate last night and trying to boot into recovery but no go. im assuming i have a "bad" model and hoping i can swap it later today. just wondering what is the best way to get them to swap me to get the bootloader version... im planning on going and saying ima dev and need this feature and every phone they give me i will try to run bootloader mode and see if it works. i mean recovery mode lol. so i hope i will leave with a captivate that can go into recovery mode!! any suggestions?

I've seen many posts here about people with a "hardware locked" boot loader/recovery/whatever. It inclined me to check and my Captivate has this issue as well :/
I'm not worried enough to go swap mine out right away, but I am worried for the future (I plan on flashing CM6.x whenever it's available for our phone) in case something may go wrong.

RC30 T-Mobile Update

First off.... We don't have any way to get root on any phone that has the official RC30 update.
Second is there any way to emulate RC30 so that we can try to hack it (without loading the t-mobile update on my phone)?
Third for the HW people is there any JTAG on this thing? I don't want to take mine apart but if there is some way to get JTAG we should be able to mod anything
and last but not least is there anyone that has an RC30 phone that T-Mobile won't take back and you can't sell on ebay (like a broken screen or something)?
I am glad I got root on mine in time but I think we need to try to help the people that didn't get it in time... and once the RC19 phones run out all new phones will have RC30+ and our community will be limited to the people that got their phones at RC19.
this post needs a BUMP
For this phone to reach its maximum potential, it will either need a) tmo/google to create everything (yeah right), or b) everyone to be on a rooted device.
In its current state, its not worth the money. In fact, the only reason i bought one was because i knew i had to buy one quick otherwise risk not having root. Of course, i also understood that its highly probable that we will get root on tmo RC30 phones, but i wasn't willing to risk it.
what about the boot loader? can we get into the phone via the boot loader and flash it?
bumped for those of us that have the official ota 30. I am very new to linux so I am trying to learn on the fly. I do not want to brick my phone though. So any of you linux gods, please help us lay people out!
I was hoping to brainstorm but I haven't heard any more ideas or anyone that can tell me one way or another what ideas have been tried and failed.
So if you have the ota RC-30 update you basically can't do anything to modify your phone yet right,I just want a way to get rid of the market cache or put it on my sd card, Im up to 16 mb of market cache and it keeps growing by the day and my phones internal memory is down to 15 mb,is there anyone who can help with this.
Already talked about in other forums...(market cache) it will go away once you have litlle space left. Bump
oh, I didn't know that, thanks for the info
hey all, im getting my hands on a rc30 non-rooted phone and i would be more than happy to hack on it if you all give me direction. maybe we can find a way to get root for all the poor people who got the ota.
pm me if you want me to try anything on it.
wish i could help, but i have no clue abut phone hacking.....
im a super motor head thats builds cars and has a fetish for technology.
root for us would be great.........RC30 ota victim here.
fortunately i got root on my personal g1....im always glued to xda developers, but ive got a second one that is for us to test on and no worries if it gets bricked....
yeah nobody has any clue at t-mobile how to downgrade from rc30. in fact most of them don't even understand hot to manually upgrade/downgrade the firmware on the g1. I called google, they just gave me google.com/support (no live support reps, and the site is no help at all), htc's #'s are tech support=888.356.2375, and hotline=866.449.8358, i'm calling them 2morrow. I just ran Zenmap it says port 8081 is open that's it, I ran intensive portscan, it also says blackice-icecap is running on that port.
I'm very interested in what you find out. I accidently upgraded my rooted phone (fat fingers!) to RC30.
so has anyone figured out how to use the bootloader for an SD update?
Is there any way to get chroot to work and mount the Filesystem RW from the update screen and add an SU program?
what is under that small void sticker under the back cover (WARNING if you remove that sticker I am betting your warranty is bad)?
are there any other key combinations that would get us into a better debug mode?
Bump, so at least we have it up for a little while longer...

I'm assuming you're referring to booting into recovery mode. You would need a shell (either on the device directly or via adb). Recovery mode does not provide that.
You could try to figure out a way to exploit the recovery binary, but there aren't many ways in... just pressing keys (and those are pretty constrained in prompt_and_wait() in recovery.c).
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/recovery.git;a=tree
I had wondered if there's something to be done with the recovery/command or recovery/intent files but the filesystem permissions have them locked up fairly tight despite the fact that while in recovery mode they are set 777 (again, doing anything would probably require a shell).
recovery.c:
Code:
86 // Use generous permissions, the system (init.rc) will reset them.
hey all, got an RC30 non Rooted G1 in hand, with my computer ready. Anything you all want me to try?
im sure it sounds a bit much. but what about somehow emulating the OTA update process from a PC?
anyone baller enuff to figure that out lol.
or maybe this phone has a setup similar to the PSP. remember how you could hard mod the battery to get debug mode?
Any ideas what is under that Void sticker?
is there any way to use USB while in recovery mode or boot loader mode?
I just got my G1 on Sunday. It's still rc29. What should I be looking for? So I shouldn't update to RC30 then? Thanks!

[Q] Kyocera Zio Semi-bricked

Hey guys I was messing around with my Zio m6000 which I got recently but was unable to find software recovery mode even though I tried all possible button combos. (FYI I have up down volume rockers a send key a camera key and an on off /cancel button) my home button is screen/software touch Dependant.
I recently rooted it and decided I would make a backup image. I used clockworks free app to try to create a backup image. I selected a phone model close to my phone specs because my phone model is new it didn't have it as a choice. the phone rebooted.
That is it. There is no recovery image yet and I am unable to get passed the kyocera boot screen.
I can access 2 things:
1. is a blue screen which says "Modem download mode !!" when I plug that in via usb it says on my pc "kyocera Diagnostics interface (COM9)"
2. fastboot mode.
I have done a couple google searches but to no avail. I am wondering if there is some way to load recovery mode or to perform a factory reset Via USB or SD card or using some SDK commands?...
help me out here guys

Are you kidding? I sure hope you're kidding. You're not supposed to Flash a ClockWork Recovery Image to your phone if it isn't meant for your phone... come on. That's basic. But on the good side, I'm sure if you FastBoot Flash something you should be able to get it to load. You gots the uhm, BootLoader working?
BTW - How is that phone? I was considering it, but it looks kinda crappy (no offense?)
I cant seem to get to a boot loader. The last time I tried it via some software it factory reset my phone. The only thing I can think of is that they have tried to make it hard for modders. not to say its impossible but just hard.
in my defence about the backup, First off I was just trying to back up my phone.. I had good intentions. 2ndly I didn't think the profile mattered because I thought I was just going to make an image of MY phone by doing it.
This good news you speak of, I hope we can get to it without a boot loader :I
The phone is decent however it can be a bit sluggish at times and the CDMA network only works in the carrier browser and not for apps ect. The GPS works well and is solid. Battery life is decent when im not using it otherwise I can use the web on the phone via Wifi for about 3 hours before it goes dead Disappointing.
Thanks for the reply and please if anyone has any ideas let me know.
Pathoz
Hmm, care to share the details on how you can root the Zio?
Sure anyone who can help me fix my phone will find out.
::Bump:: Im still needing some help on this guys. Help me out please?

Well guys at the end of my rope here with my phone so I gave it to my gf to play with the buttons for a bit.... she actually figured out how to get it to boot! up button and power button loaded a blue screen that flickered and and went to the carrier screen and booted... all my settings are saved phone is still rooted Woot!
I have actually been looking how to get into recovery mode JUST because I didn't have anything to do and was searching for Zio stuff, and it brought me here lol.
Power + Up...
At least you posted this on the forum.
I'm really hoping that more people pick up the Zio.
I would hate to be the only one interested in tinkering with the phone.
Just a case of being a little too late lol.
Glad you found the fix though.
Good Luck
If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to backup your phone?
I am pretty new to the Android scene (Not new to phone hacking but I'm new to Android) and I know that some applications will work and some wont.
I want to make a proper backup before I start messing around with things I know nothing about.
Okay a little clarification / interesting news...
1. Power + up button worked 1 time to let me boot my phone... I tried to restart my phone to test and see if I could still use my phone and it will not get past the Kyocera screen again.
2. Power + up does not boot the phone to any type of menu or recovery mode it only downloads modem data over the air,
so guess what?
3. After using power + up I apparently switched my phone to some type of Verizon pre paid phone which could not call out or receive calls. Wifi still worked and all my apps / data was still there.
4. I am going to have to replace my phone and not make the same mistake again.
5. I have documented this whole process and will be releasing a guide after I can get my new phone going. A guide to rooting and backing it up after I successfully back it up.
6. The program that I used was clockworks recovery free but the problem is they do not have the Kyocera Zio m6000 phone model! DO NOT USE CLOCKWORKS RECOVERY UNTILL HE HAS YOUR PHONE MODEL! You will be right where I am.
I’m going to try a couple more things before I break down and get a new phone...
I will keep you all posted.

Yeah man, those recovery images are phone specific apparently so I would imagine it could do some bad things to let one rip. Maybe shoot [email protected] an email?
I did the same thing, I figured out the way to boot it up but now I am on a verizon network, like the op. I am going to call Cricket customer support and see what they can do.
EDIT: Here is the fix
Go to Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks and choose home only. Now exit and open the Dialer and press*228 send and let the phone program.
EDIT 2 : Ok well this gets the phone working but does not restore Mobile Web/Data services. Returned phone to cricket and had it replaced free of charge
I am facing the EXACT same issue. I cant get it to boot for the life of me. Its stuck with Kyocera/Modem mode/ or fast boot and thats it. It's just driving me insane. Clockworks free did this to me too
This phone is OVER!
so after having many problems with this phone and the many replacements I just got the HUAWEI Ascend! Its tons better! many of the problems i had with Zio are totally solved by swapping it to the Ascend. I recommend to anyone thinking about Zio, Save your money and buy an Ascend!
Dont even buy the replacement phone for the zio if you have the chance! A replacement costs 80 bucks if you upgrade to the Ascend its $120. Well worth the money in my case.

[Q] Accidentally flash nVidia Tegra2 Devkit over gTab

Hi All,
I have a G Tablet and have gotten myself into a right mess.
I had bricked the device to a point where the logo splash screen would appear, but it wouldn't progress any further. I couldn't get into CW restore or anything.
I got the unit into APX mode, installed the driver and managed to get a connection.
Then I accidentally ran the "nvflash_1gb_lcd.bat" file.
Now the unit doesn't want to even go into APX mode, so I can't reflash the unit with a different boot/restore/system img set.
Is there any way that I can get back from this?
If so, how do I go about it?
Mark
Take it back
Return it and tell them its defective.... they will have to replace it. I mean especially if you show them it won't turn on properly.

Are you serious? You screw things up and then hand the mess over to someone else? And some people wonder why return polices at certain places are so crappy for the rest of us.
To the OP, please don't do what alynch75 suggested. I would help you if I knew how but unfortunately, I don't. Hopefully, this bump will get your thread some more attention from people who potentially do know what to do.
If you can get it back into APX mode (and you should be able to), then try bekit's nvflash image:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
If you cannot get it into APX mode, then you might be SOOL.

Nah, I wouldn't do this even if I was in the US. I am in Australia.
We'll see how we go.
M
Not to worry. Did you get clockwork recovery installed? Go to WWW.droidpirate.com and go to g tablet section. You,LLC find all the files you need there. Had the same issue today and got it resolved following the tutorials there! If not maybe we can setup a remote session and get it resolve. Send me a pm and we can go from there. Don,t lose heart, your device is not bricked!
come on i dind't know he screwed it up. I thought this was something that the device was supposed to be able to do. I am new to android... give me a break .. i didn't mean any harm....

Noob Help Please!!

So yeah I dont really know crap about most things, so I need help to prevent me from having to buy a new phone.
So a few days back my XT907M got the new 4.4.2 update. It worked fine for a couple days then it went into a boot loop. It had done this a few weeks before the update but it snapped out of it somehow.
It will not let me go into recovery mode, but I could get it to go into fastboot, so I did some googling and decided to try my hand at reflashing it. I had trouble getting my PC to verify a connection to the phone. I tried getting different drivers, but again i dont know what the hell im doing so i had not luck.
I took the phone to a place called World of Wireless here in Minneapolis to see if they could fix it. They told me that they went in and deleted two bad lines of code, but since the new fastboot files arent available for 4.4.2 that there was nothing they could do because the phone will not let them go backwards.
is there anything I can do, or am I just going to have to buy a new phone?
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

Blocked By FRP Cannot Restore Using Odin

OK ready for the story?
I have a Note 5 just being used to game since I upgraded to the S7 Edge, damn locked bootloader. I wanted to sell the Note 5 since cash is tight and I figured I can take the family out to eat a nice dinner and put the rest in the bank.
BOOM!!! Device is sold on Offer Up!
They want to meet at T-Mobile so they can active blah blah blah. They want to make sure everything is cool with the device. I get it. So I meet them there, show them the phone is nice and clean no scratches, I take care of my phones people, love it give me the money BAM off I go happy to have money sad to see her go. C'mon she didnt have a locked bootloader, grrrrr S7E, damn u Sammy!!!
Anyways
I AM AT THE MOFO BANK LINE
Ring Ring Ring
"Um hello?"
"Yeah, the T-Mobile guy did a factory reset and now its saying that it's blocked by some custom Binary FRP or something like that"
(My Mind and Thoughts) ==> "ARE YOU F---- KIDDING ME?!?!? THE T-MOBILE DID NOT! NO WAY!"
Yes it was rooted with a custom ROM. I decided instead of unrooting let me just slap on a stock rooted rom and wipe and off it goes. Maybe they will notice and enjoy or maybe they wont. Oh and I left TWRP just in case.
This guy decides to go to the settings and uncheck OEM unlock.
WHY THE BLEEP WOULD MAKE HIM DO THIS? WHY IS HE SUCK A PRRRRRRIIIICCCCCCCCKKKKKK!
So of course Im like no worries Im a good guy im not gonna screw this people. Easy fix. Download mode and odin that bad girl....................
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!
I met them at the store at 2PM with my laptop. Let them follow me to my castle and go here around 5:05PM EASTERN STANDARD FREAKING TIME....
I've tried 2 computers and I can't get anything to write using ODIN. Just fails every times.
Now the Binary and System were both showing custom before trying ODIN
Now the Binary Shows Official Sammy but the System is still showing custom.
Recovery is gone. Only download mode works and when I do try to boot it tells me that blue message with Samsung Smart switch emergency blah to get to live etc....
Can anyone help me with this please.
Oh they were here for 3 more hours, I felt bad, gave them the money back, they still want it and want me to call them or text them 2morow if I get it back up.
AHHHHH so frustrated.
Thank you for reading my rant and plead for help.
I just tried COKC and this is the error I get.
Downloading DPD1 to see if it takes that.
I've tried:
DQA2
DPK6
COKC
just giving an update to see if anyone has a tip or solution to help me and others that may have the same issue as me.

Try to remember the firmware you had on it originally. That's the way I was able to get into mine. I had to download 3 or 4 official firmware's to get it. Good luck ?

Sorry for quoting you. I didn't realize it until I hit submit
Ok I was able to get it back up and running but not quite like I wanted it to be.
Here is what I did. I flashed the Engineering Bootloader and then I was able to wipe and get back into the device,
I did have to use a box called Z3x that I have owned for a while. Google the use of the box for more information.
I used it to remove the FRP and bypass the activation screen. But the issue is that I still cannot load any stock firmware on to the device.
It fails with every software I have tried. The other weird part is the Modem and Baseband are two completely different viersions.
I am attaching the image of what my current system looks like.
In case anyone needs the N920T Engineering Bootloader here it is on my drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-TF42CgnkiWSlF5Y0lvS054WG8/view?usp=drivesdk
roketteere--I am in the same boat. Was running stock 7.0 Nougat with TWRP. Accidentally/stupidly disabled "developer mode" and that locked my device ...
Did you ever get a ROM to work?
