Keyboard Stopping Unexpectedly - G1 Android Development

I just freshly installed CyanogenMod-6 with gapps-mdpi-tiny-20100917-signed.zip but on first boot I come to the Android setup screen and it keeps saying that the keyboard process has stopped unexpectedly. I've tried reflashing the ROM and reinstalling the Google Apps file but it keeps happening. Anyone have any ideas?

try flashing a different ROM and seeing if the keyboard works

I got a mt3g and it happens on a lot of roms

OK I've got Chromatic installed now and it's still doing the same thing. The keyboard worked fine before the new ROM was installed. Should I maybe try the non-Tiny version of the Google Apps file?

Like 99.99% of ROMs floating around the forums these days, Chromatic is themed CM6 with a new name, so it's not actually a different ROM.

Oooooh I see. Can anyone suggest (and possibly link) another ROM that I can try that isn't CM6?

It actually *says* that the keyboard process has stopped? That's unusual. Typical behavior of the keyboard is for it to simply VANISH.
The problem with CM6 is that it is a RAM HOG. You can mitigate the problem by giving yourself 48-ish MB of compcache. The default 24 is not nearly enough. What is really needed though, is for CM to actually work on getting the RAM consumption down. There's no reason it should eat up that much.

I made two statements, which one are you agreeing with? That the keyboard should simply vanish? Or that CM should work on reducing RAM consumption?

[ROM] MghtyMax 1.9 Hero

After messing around with about 5 or so different ROMs i found, what i think to be the fastest Hero ROM ever.
http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=918
It runs really well, and is very snappy.
For myt3g, it needs the blurry fix, which he provides also... but after that... no bugs whatsoever. I am running this on a class4 sandisk 4gb flash, with 512 ext4 and 192 swap. awesome!
32A Or 32B ??
32B, since its for the MT3G/G1
32B. i am loving it!
Did he fix the boot screen so it doesn't scream Mightmax at you? I can't have that screaming at me at a client meeting
Faster than MLIGN-HeroV2.5.5?
Yes, better without screaming MightyMax! on boot

For my work well on a Vodafone 32b, only many app crash without apparent reason, any solution for it?
-CarMode
-FonMaps
-Buka
-SU File Manager & Terminal
And many others apps can't work on this ROM
Can you solve this feature?
And one more question, is possible base this ROM on Android 1.6? I think it can work more fast with Donut, because it is more optimized for 32b devices.
Wow!!!
I was a little skeptical about trying a ROM from a dev from another site, but man I'm glad I did. This thing is incredible! I've only been using it for about 5 hours but I think this just shut the Hero ROM game down! I made a 192MB swap partition with 80 swappiness, and clocked the CPU to 384-528. No force closes, no reboots, apps spring open, the desktop screens scroll fluidly, apps pop open immediately, very fast keyboard, so far this seems fast as vanilla Android! So far my only complaint is there is no weather on the flip clock for some reason. I have been using "Weather Widget - Donate" from the Market instead. Oh, and the Mighty Max audio clip during start up is a little annoying, but definitely not a deal breaker. Try it, trust me!
How fast? Good enough??
Personally I don't think talking about the word fast any more an issue for 32A Magic. I have been trying most of 32B Hero ROMs and there is noting significant I say about them on my 32A. Every Hero ROM looks frikin fast to me now.
I believe is that how much of battery would run along on a single charge that what we should address on Hero ROMS now. Drizzy's Blur 1.5.7 Hero ROM last long fine. After all its CyanogenMod 4.1.999 is that I can say the best.

Well I can say that with 32B devices performance typically varies greatly with different ROMs. So far I'm loving this on my 32B sapphire. Enjoy that extra RAM, show off .

This ROM is posted here on xda in the dream forum -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=570700
I flashed it last night - 32b - and I have to say, I'm impressed and surprised. This one is running really smooth - and very responsive. "Best" one I've tried yet.
Where is this guy, and why is he not active in XDA?!
This is BY FAR the best Hero ROM i have ever tried... WOW!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING! (I could kiss you! haha)
MightyMax, I could kiss you too!
One question: Has anyone tried straining from the default swap settings, maybe enabling CC and backing_swap? If so, please post your results.
Personally I find this ROM flying, and even Benchmark Pi is FASTER than with CyanogenMod, but I am wondering what we could get by playing around with CompCache... In the meantime, I'm going to try and tweak it, and be sure to post results back here.

Well as pbaird mentioned in the post before yours he is active on XDA, in the Dream section. He goes by the name of mghtyred. After scanning through that thread I know he dropped Compache because it was causing problems. LS has always seemed faster to me anyway.
touchflo crashes all the time for me when i press the home button coming from an app, anyone else get this? i was thinking of extending the linux swap but i cant because im not an admin on my computer...anyone got any performance hints?

Live Wallpapers running on CDMA Hero

Review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIL7tXnlEKU
- courtesy of kenfly
update: thanks to chuckhriczko we have an update.zip. googlebits included, livewallpapers are running, except for nexus ones, this is working on the AOSP 2.0.1 build, includes the new music app, youtube, new 3d gallery, its slow and glitchy but it does load,launcher2 is installed but just gives a black screen and force closes, most likely due to lack of openGL but the still wallpapers from it work!!!and updated host scripts to block ads.
Wipe, flash and enjoy.
http://www.4shared.com/file/199173614/387bc31a/aosp-lwp-signed.html
Update:
i have the nexus LWP to sit on loading, no longer force closes, i have the nexus themed launcher installed, flan clock app, gumbo kernal installed, protected apps showing in market, will upload new version once i get super users to work right
Awesome! Can't wait for a release.
so.. opengl is working? on 2.1? at least it was my understanding that is what was needed..

Nice, but i tried AOP 2.0.1 and its too glitchy plus i hate the keyboard
That is sweet I would deal with vanilla Android (i like sence) to be able to use that.
Keep up the good work.
So when we get updated to Eclair sometime in the not to distant future this will be a feature that we can use?

Very cool! I am looking forward to trying this out.
Awesome. We all will be looking forward to it. I do need to ask, is it possible to get this on the Hero 2.1 build that's floating around or are the files that need to be modified hacked to hell by HTC in those roms?
Is the camera and gps working on this build????
How is it that someone who can figure out how to get that running on his Hero has no idea how to get a camera to focus on something?
Does the Google Voice app work correctly on 2.0.1? That's the one issue that's prevented me from using the 2.1 ROM on a daily basis.

[Q] Animation Lag

I've been searching around to see if anyone else is experiencing this but it doesn't seem like it. I'm coming from a vibrant, and all the animations + menu scrolling just seem a heck of a lot snappier on the vibrant. I'm guessing it's most likely because of the Sense crap but I just wanted some closure. Also, installing a custom non sense rom should make it better right?!

Hi,
You are right about the Sense crap, and there is probably also the bloatware all seeming to hold it back.
Installing a custom ROM will improve this, and then there are kernels designed to reduce the lag even further.

I wouldn't accept it. Sense has no lag on mine so either your carrier borks the ROM they install on their sensations or there's a hardware issue.
Compare it with others from the same carrier.

[Q] Best Running JB ROM Available.

Question of Curiosity, And of course, Preference
Im Considering Changing up roms Eventually, I use my phone quite frequently,
Tubing, Browsing the Web. and Music, Occasionally ill get my self addicted to a game i have an extended battery of course.
I do happen to text more frequently then others
i would like to know what the forum users of XDA Choose as their roms of their picking
I personally am having great expectations of JellyBelly
Hopefully v4 won't disappoint your great expectations
I'm sure jellbelly will meet or exceed expectations. I have been trying all the JB builds in this forum and it is the smoothest running so far. I have had issues with them all locking up sometimes but this one does it the least and is the only one that hasn't forced a battery pull.

I've Used, JellyBelly for a bit it still has the keyboard issue where if you hit the cap button once it will lock into All CAPS For the whole message and you have to toggle it many times to get it to unlock from caps or you just have to Hold the Shift ( Cap ) Button to Cap a letter and let it go.
I've also ran into a few problems . with the FN some Options such as the _ Underscore will not appear in some log in Selection boxes. i have to manually go to my soft touch keyboard and key it in by long pressing the Symbol.
None the less dont get me wrong its a great rom hands down. I would like to see those little kinks worked out.
Sorry man, but that's the way the keyboard is on JB, you gotta hold the shift or fn key down like on the computer.

It has been that way for me on every JB ROM, with random times that it works correctly... IDK. Either way, I will probably not be doing any more work on JB until it is less buggy. It's just a headache when bugs pop up out of nowhere, some of the weird bugs aren't ROM specific either. Sorry guys, but it kinda takes the fun out of it when you are constantly fixing bugs. I may do one more update, but I don't know when that will be. For now I'll let the devs that are more talented than me see if they can work out some kinks, my main objective with JellyBelly was to reduce the lag so JB was more usable.

I first tried out kushdeck's CM10 for the evoSHIFT! but found that very unstable. Constantly hangs and the phone would reboot.
Using bilgerryan's JellyBelly-CM10 v4 and it does still hang for a minute at times in the same places as kushdeck's. Primarily happens throughout settings such as viewing APPS then selecting something also SystemUI hangs.

I tried V6 just now, unfortunately I am not able to post in the thread as my account has less than 10 posts but I have run into a few issues with it thus far. The animations and scrolling are very choppy, this may be related to the "screen flickering" problems listed so i'll have to check the build.prop and make sure everything is as it is supposed to be there. As well, i've ran into a bug where upon backing out of the camera (which I use frequently), all icons and widgets vanish until phone reboot. That's quite a big problem! It's a fast ROM no doubt, and probably the best JB based ROM we have ATM.

I did! Extra carefully making sure to wipe everything as usual - this is my second or third ROM flash and only the first time I've seen something like this. After the phone reboot I tried to force the camera bug again so I could screenshot it for bilgerryan but it hasn't shown back up yet. Will be continuing to test, really loving this room so far I just wish it was as smooth as the one I was using previously (RemICS-UX ReVamped).
I guess it could be a bad dl. You might try down loading again over WiFi or hard line then reflashing.

Will give it a shot after I set aside some time and check the build.prop gpu tweak you mentioned in the topic, even though that may be outdated and no longer needed by v6. I did however have the camera back-out glitch happen again. When leaving the camera, no icons or widgets render. I was able to fix it this time by reopening the camera from the lock screen and backing out, but still very irritating and interesting behavior.

Yeah it should not be needed in v6.. What are your CPU settings? If you haven't overclocked it you might wanna set it at 1.2 or 1.3 GHz. I haven't been able to reproduce the camera thing you are talking about. Chad might be right. Looks like a bad download.

[Q] Apps "refresh" when docking/undocking

I've searched the web about this, but found only one other post about it with no replies.
When you guys dock or undock your tablet, while running an app, does the app "refresh" or something like that?
Mine does it all the time, and it's quite annoying, because some of the apps close completely, making me lose all the work i've done. Currently i'm on 4.2.2, but it also happened on the stock firmware.
Any ideas, or i have to live with it?
BTW, it doesn't happen on Ubuntu, so i don't think it's a hardware problem
Which ROM? I do not experience this anymore on Liquidsmooth, but it used to be a horrible cancerous problem for me.
I do not know what might have fixed it, but it was annoying when on a bumpy bus or plane ride.
Generally the app shouldn't lose any progress though, try recent apps to reload from where you were?
Just had a thought too: it might be the default asus keyboard? I had this issue with the asus keyboard but don't remember having it with thumbkeyboard, maybe that fixed it?
Just food for thought.

I'm using the no-name CM10.1.
What do you mean by default asus keyboard? The touch one or the original dock?
I am using the TeamEOS 4 ROM and it does refresh the app when docking/undocking.
I think the only ROM this did NOT happen on was the Megatron ROM. Every other ROM (including Stock, ARHD and Revolver) it does refresh the app, so be sure you have saved your progress before docking/undocking.
