ACtivesync deleted (most) all my contacts - General Questions and Answers

I knew this was gonna happen when i started....i HATE activesync
I had to sync my phone with all my contacts stored on a new computer that had none of the data - i ASSUMED activesync would ask me - like it sometimes does - if i wanted to delete the items on my phone, combine them etc - we've all seen that message right?
well it did not ask, it just synced. it did something weird though - it did not delete ALL my contacts, just MOST. it left like 15 contacts for some random reason.
now before you ask, yes i did do a PIM backup before i synced just cause i was afraid of this happening, but it's not loading any contacts, and more over i think something is wrong with the program/file. when i was backing up it hung forever on outlook, and i thought it was b/c or the email mssgs it was trying to get. so i stopped the backup and unchecked "messages" to be backed up. it did the backup and saved the file. but now when i use the file to restore it's not bringing back the contacts, and i can in the log it says "0 files found" when it gets to the contacts portion of the restore.
Thankfully i still have my sms message log and can retrieve most of my phone numbers thru my text messages, but that is a huge pain and i still will have lost a good number of my numbers.
Any thoughts on:
A. what is going on with my PIM backup restore and why it is not bringing back the contacts?
B. Why would activesync have done this weird sync...if it had left me no contacts i'd understand better what had just taken place but it left me with a few of my contacts and did not delete them all
C. NEXT TIME, HOW DO I SYNC A FRESH SYNC AND GUARANTEE IT WILL HAPPEN THE SAFE WAY WHERE I TRANSFER FROM MY PHONE TO MY COMPUTER AND NOT LOSE EVERYTHING??

Pim bkup saves it as an XML file and can be opened in word and retrieve some names and numbers. I hate ASync as well. I just use mass storage function on device now.
good day.

IPM.Root

How do I get rid of IPM.Root from my inbox? since it appeared I can't find my e-mail.
What in the world is IPM.ROOT?
First, I found a solution for SPB backup users. Make a backup. Hard reset. Perform a partial restore, restoring everything except email. Then rebuild the email from scratch, which for me is just creating a POP3 account.
This gets me up and running pretty quickly, although of course losing any emails, text messages, etc. I had saved. But does anyone know what is causing it? This morning my text message folder was gone, replaced with IPM.ROOT, and there were two outboxes in my POP3 account. It is the second time it has happened to me. Clearly my email had gotten corrupted, but how?
Is there a trick to recreate the folders?
One possibility -- I sync with two computers and yesterday had erased one connection, reinstalled activesync, and created a new connection. That could have been the time the email folder was corrupted.
Does anyone know of another way than having to hard reset the device??

Deleting an email account problems...

So, I recently needed to wipe my Kaiser, but of course did a backup using sprite backup first to take my data with me. Now in a way the most important bit of data I needed to get out of the back up were the SMS (I use Gmail so I planned to just have it resync through IMAP), and other than that, my My Docs and Personal Databases I've been reinstalling everything. However, I've hit a problem with my emails...
My texts have been restored perfectly, however my gmail account is not listed. Initially I though that that was fine, however it turns out that the phone still thinks that the account is set up, even though it's not listed in the Accounts page. Furthermore, SPB Mobile Shell lists it as an available account in the messaging tab, though clicking on it only takes me back to the Account Chooser.
What I want to do is delete all the existing email settings that are hiding on the phone and then re-download my email from Gmail, however I don't know where the account data and settings are stored. I tried deleting the contents of \windows\messaging\ but that didn't seem to change anything...
Any suggestions?

Locating the contact db file in WM 6.1 (contacts, calendar, phone all broken)

My problem is very similar to the one described here, However I don't want to fix it, I just want to TRY and retrieve my contacts!!!!
I am looking for the contact data files in WM 6.1 (in other words, the outlook data files that are probably hidden).
Backstory: The resident idiot here (ME) neglected to sync his phone and back things up for, oh, about 3 months. (yes, you know what comes next, and I fully deserve it!).
The phone has now stopped working... Specifically, the Phone application, contacts application, and calendar application. The rest of WM is working fine, except that there is something causing it to run sluggish. AND the phone will not sync. It will connect, but it refuses to sync. Nothing was done to cause this failure, other than waking up one morning.
SOMETHING is corrupted, but I don't think its the actual data file (logic for that is below), SO before I hit the hard reset.... I thought I might try to back it up manually..... what do I have to lose?
A few more specifics:
1. Samsung i770 running WM 6.1 (but I think more of a WM specific issue than a i770 issue). Activesync 4.5 will connect, but it will not sync contacts.
2. When the phone booted for the first 20 or so times after the problem appeared, an error message would across the screen as soon as the desktop was loaded, but far too fast to make out any of the words.
3. Trying to load contacts, calendar, or the phone application produces absolutely no result. No error message, to hung process, nothing.
4. The messaging application works fine, BUT any attempt to load a contact from within fails. Again, no error message, just... nothing happens, it's like you never clicked it....
5. The radio antenna in the top bar says that it has no service.
6. NOW the error message is no longer flashing by the screen when you boot the phone, but all other symptoms remain.
7. Despite the fact that the radio icon and status indicator claims there is no signal, I can send and receive text messages (I just have to enter the number manually).
8. Once, very recently, without doing anything, an error message appeared and STAYED on the screen. Shape of the text looks about right for the message that previously has been flashing by on the screen, I think they are one in the same.
"Shortcut Target"
"error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename."
ANY THOUGHTS? Primarily I'm looking for the contacts data file (I don't care about the calendar, but its probably in the same spot) to TRY back it up before I hard reset the phone.... BUT if anyone has any ideas about a cause or temporary fix to the problems, I'm all ears!!!!!!
I'd highly recommend trying Microsoft MyPhone, just to see if that can access your contacts. It may be that the contacts DB itself is knackered, in which case you obviously can't get anything back.
Worth a try

Good luck!

Click to collapse
Indeed it was worth a try. Connected via Wifi to install (can't use data plan, that requires "dialing" an internet connection, which must use the phone app).
Synced documents, txt messages, photos, and then said "Synchonization Successful". WOOHOO! all done.... OR NOT! checked online, NO contacts information. No Calendar information. Apparently MyPhone takes the stance of "if it won't work, just ignore it and report success".
Thanks, A very good thing to try, but no go
Unfortunately, I can think of a number of different ways that WM could be programed, each pointing to a different culprit for the problem. If it's straight DB access for each program, then the only conclusion is that the DB is knackered. But if there's a some kind of access control program that handles those things, maybe its just the program that's no good (hence the message that it couldn't load the target shortcut when the phone boots up).
Anyone have any ideas where to find the DB itself? I can always try the traditional (and very bad idea) of a file swap.....
Looks like this mystery will go unsolved... last chance to figure out where to find the contacts db file is. I'll probably be wiping it tomorrow, can't live without the phone much longer. Thanks for the suggestions so far!
Search for PIMBackup, that will enable you to save all your PIM related stuff and then restore it once you have a working device.
Edit
Forgot to say this doesn't require you to install anything, just save the EXE to your memory card and then use File Manager to run it on the PPC.
"Connecting to outlook...."
"Could not connect to Outlook."
Beautiful suggestion, I really thought I had the answer there... Thank you!
Seems to be that poutlook.exe is knackered, but that really would not explain why the Phone (cprog.exe) won't load...
PIM Backup log history is mostly what could be expected:
appointments failed - cant connect to outlook
call logs worked
contacts failed - cant connect to outlook
messages worked - "connected to outlook" (but thats a different db and a different connection app, tmail.exe)
speed dials worked
tasks failed - cant connect to outlook
So it comes down to this: PIM.vol is knackered, OR poutlook.exe is dead, and I'm not sure which. Anyone have WM 6.1 and feel like emailing me a copy of poutlook.exe? (powderkeg500 ~a~t~ gmail ^d0t^ com !)... I'm sure the versions may be a bit different... but *shrug* maybe it will work?.....
Does anyone know if I can simply copy PIM.vol to my computer, reload the device, and then copy PIM.vol back to the phone? If the answer is absolutely yes, then I can simply try that. But if the answer is no... I could be shooting myself in the foot
i think copying PIM.vol off and then back on might work, but i seem to recall it may require Total Commnader to get it back on as it's locked by the OS on startup - deemed a system level file i think.
i remember doing this once myself but can't remember that far back now.
Sorry for not sounding more positive. You might like to look at alol.net.br as they offer a free Exchange acount you access OTA and so your contacts would always be backed up in future.

Google Contacts-> Need Data connection?

I find that there are SIM Contacts, Phone Contacts, and Google Contacts. My plan is that my official contacts are Google Contacts.
Do I need to have a data connection to see them? I don't want to count on a data connection being always there. Not quite sure how to proceed on this.
I find that not all of my Google contacts are on the phone if I select "Google contacts" only for contacts. I don't see a 'Sync' opton either.
Any thoughts?
on my current android device all of my google contacts sync and stay on my device. Mine is set up differently as I only have one set of contacts, but you shouldnt need a data connection once they've all synced unless you make changes.
Thanks.
So what are the thoughts about the fact that I have (maybe only 1) contact/s that are in my Google contacts, but not on the phone.
[edit]
I clicked the search, and found the contact. But the contact is no in my list. Only contacts I have displaying are Google Contacts. Maybe one thing I might need to do to be sure I don't get it all confused, is delete them from SIM and phone. But not sure how to do that, and be sure I don't delete from Google Contacts.
[EDIT2]
Well not having any luck. I tried adding another account (my wife's), but that won't work. Because there is no selection to synch calendar only. You must sync email. Don't want her email.
Looks like I need to hard reset the phone So, my next order of business is to figure out how to backup everything, so I don't have to do all the config again. Of course, what I don't know is if the restore will just bring the problem back, assumint the hard rest fixes my isse. I'll create a new post on backup topic.

where are my contacts after restoring with TB

Made a TB backup of everything before I flashed to Cog. Now I cant restore contacts. Am i missing something?
Did you sync your contacts with the AT&T address book online, that is where I store mine before I flash and then I just log on to my account from my pc and sync, then from the phone I click on contacts click the menu button then choose more then settings, then sync with the AT&T address book.
Also did you click on batch in TIBU and then choose your contacts from TIBU, I am not sure about it though.
Never synced with att. I did try to restore contact batch from TB but no luck. Guess I learned my lesson and will be manually adding my contacts. Will sync for sure after that
Why not sync your contacts with GMail or Hotmail? Store all your contacts locally is a disaster waiting to happen.
Reboot
When this first happened to me, I was rather upset. But I found that after I do the TB restore I then reboot my phone, all my contacts and groups are there. So try a reboot...
I also believe that the contacts are in one of the two System Data files (set filter to 'contact'). One is red, the other green. So make sure you backup all system data, and during the restore, if you decide to NOT restore all system data (many say you should not restore system data if changing ROMs, but I've never had a problem), then make sure you do restore those two files. Then reboot.
On a side note, the AT&T contact sync does not support groups. So the contacts will be backed up, but all dumped into one of the three default groups.
