[Q] Please assist: How do I install recovery after rooting with AndRoot?? - Hero CDMA Android Development

I used AndRoot to root the .6 official. I have SU on my device.
How do I install the custom recovery? Im being told permission denied. At which point do I begin the process now, at flash_image?
Thank you thank you

Try this, get terminal emulator from market. Find Amon RA 1.7 and download it, move it to root of SD card. Open terminal, type su (return) then type "flash_image recovery /sdcard/RA-Darchstar.img" without parenthesis and hit return. Cursor should pause for a sec then drop down with # behind it and your done. Install quickboot from market and hit recovery, BAM!!!!_

i appreciate it but id prefer to do this on my pc via command prompt.
how can I install a custom recovery, so that i can install a rom?

at this point i cant even get access to delete apps. as far as i can tell all that happened was that SU was installed. i have none of the abilities that I had before. any help is super appreciated.

Then get Rom manager from market and let it do it for you. Open app and tap on flash clockwork recovery.

ok, i just did that. told me it flashed the recovery.
thats it? this will now allow me to access /system/app and delete files? im gonna try the hold home and power now to check out the clockword recovery.

I really appreciate your help. I am in /system/app now and am gonna delete the crap outta this stuff...
thank you thank you
one last question: can I now delete those apps i installed from the market?

If you are not gonna change recoveries then I would keep the app, it does a lot of diff options. Be carefully what you get rid of in system/app. You can get rid of fieldtrial.apk, fieldtest.apk, and GSD.apk which are extras you don't need. One last thing, read this forum inside and out, get to know the wiki and search bar; they are your friends.

Rom manager doesn't have permission?

I've done the simple root with NAND setup without hiccup but when trying to backup with ROM manager it says it doesn't have permission.
I have a terminal app and it goes from $ to # when I type su
is there anything I can type in terminal to see if my NAND is actually unlocked?
I also cannot get clockwork to install but titanium has busybox installed.

seems like you have partial root.
do you have "superuser.apk" installed?
try "adb shell" should give you # automatically.
if not, try the root and nanlock again.

I do have # automatically in adb shell, I'll edit this post in a second when I look for superuser
I do not have superuser.apk
Is there anything I can type in terminal and screenshot that will tell you anything?
did some research and downloaded the busybox standalone app from the marketplace.
It says that I am rooted and I installed the busybox.
No changes. only thing i can think is that my NAND is still locked? any way to check this?

do you have a custom recovery?
try this SUPERUSER app
you have to flash it via recovery.
http://bit.ly/su222ef
if you want to check nand..
try this command.
"adb remount"
from command prompt.
if it fails, you dont have nand.
if it completes succesfully you have nand access.
I don't have a custom recovery, can't get any to work or I'm just not doing it right... I'm coming from Windows mobile...
Here's a screen cap of what you requested except on the phone and not adb, don't think it matters for this simple test.
EDIT: Thank you very much for your help with this.
I had the same problem. I re-rooted using OTA SimpleRoot and also tried unrevoked and still had errors trying to flash Clockworkmod recovery. I went into Menu>Settings and clicked on Advanced Mode and it worked.
Will try to help whrn I get to san antonio

Thanks a lot for this! I spent all day trying to figure this out. It seems unless Advanced Mode is enabled this doesn't work. FWIW I'm using DC 3.2.3. Once I enabled Advanced Mode I was able to flash to the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery!
Thanks for this post!

try this one.. taken from a zip in the first post on the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735596
version 2.2.1 gmail.apk
You may need to push through ADB as it was taken from a flashable package.
Edit: I can confirm this works. Just installed it on my phone. Rebooted and got the "whats new" screen when first opening gmail. Also reply button is at the top along with all other changes.
To install, copy over to /system/app with root explorer or push through ADB with "adb push Gmail.apk /system/app"
Verified also working on other phones. Also, if you are on an odex'd rom, make sure you delete original .apk and .odex files.
works good on Fresh 3.1.0.1, thanks!
I am running BS 1.4 and I can't get it to work. I was an idiot and overwrote the original gmail.apk. Do yall have the original froyo gmail.apk.
Thanks ahead.
Never mind I got it to work and I love it.
Thanks superevilllama!!!
I can install the APK onto my phone but I wouldn't mind waiting for the official release of the app.
Does anyone know how it will become available? Is it through an OTA or will it be in the Market?
What else has changed besides the snapping to top reply button bar?

If I would have posted that, I probably would have searched the marketplace first to find out that no you cannot, at least not yet.
I think google may be moving everything towards being able to update individual gapps through the marketplace, but not quite yet. Plus I am not sure whether this has been officially released.
Can anyone explain how to install this via terminal emulator?
I've tried "cp" and I've tried "install" - always get the "File exists" error.
Am I using the wrong command? Can't use adb since I'm not at my computer for a while.

Try just cut and paste with root explorer and reboot. A whole lot easier.
Either way you have to mount /system/app as RW before it will let you modifiy it.

To root before or after OTA?

Hey everyone. Just got the Samsung Nexus S... and I've got a question.
I've read on these forums that the OTA makes it so you have to flash CWM recovery everytime you want to reboot into recovery to flash a ROM and that it's more difficult to root.
Should I flash the OTA then root or root prior to OTA?
Thanks in advance.

You should get the OTA before you root and it is very easy to make the root stick. I did it with root explorer but I heard you can do it without it.

Which method did you use to root. And how did you manage to use root explore to get root access when root explorer needs root access first in order to operate? Thanks for your response.

No after you root you can use root explorer to make the recovery stick and there are like 5 guides on how to root on every OS in the android development sub-section. (They are stickied)

Thanks again for your response and for the clarification about using root explorer. I have read the stickies regarding rooting the phone, and because there are a few, I was wondering which method you used. I've read that superboot is the easiest and that you can rename a particular system file so the recovery sticks. Thanks again for your response.

Get the OTA.
Apply it.
Boot up to make sure everything is ok. Then boot to bootloader
fastboot oem unlock, confirm it, wipes everything including your internal sd.
flash clockwork mod recovery.
go to clockwork mod recovery from bootloader menu.
mount "internal sd" copy the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip you downloaded (from the guide) to your internal sd.
unmount internal sd.
mount /system
flash the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file.
reboot phone as normal.
login to your gmail account. go to market, download a rooted app like titanium backup free version, and also download rom manager, and buy/get root explorer.
install all those make sure super user is granted and works.
use root explorer to rename/delete the file in: /etc/recovery.sh file or whatever it's actually called.
go to rom manager, and flash the latest clockworkmod recovery (3.0.0.5)
turn off phone and boot to recovery and make sure it's clockwork mod 3.0.0.5, if it is, you're set.
Very helpful post, nxt. Thank you very much.

Yes, you need to have the Android SDK properly installed and you're able to do a 'fastboot devices' command properly and your Serial number comes up.

Root and then Unroot For Secure Email

This may seem like a basic question to you guys.
I work in an industry where our emails our monitored.
We now have the ability to get emails on android phones instead of only being able to use blackberry.
The email is transmitted securely by an app called GOOD.
GOOD will not work on rooted phones.
Can I root & remove bloatware & then unroot ? Or does it all come back?
I assume the phone has to be rooted to run a custom ROM?
Apologies if these are basic questions
Check out this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
The steps to follow would be to:
1) Install clockworkmod recovery using the one-click recovery flasher that tga gunmann has posted in the development section.
2) Download the 2 zips that jboxer posted in the thread I linked to above and save them to the sdcard on your phone
3) Using clockworkmod recovery flash the root zip and then reboot into Android.
4) Use Root Explorer or some other file explorer with root access and get rid of whatever bloatware you don't want.
5) Reboot into clockworkmod recovery and flash the unroot zip.
6) Reboot phone
That will allow you root access to make any system changes and then unroot the phone to remove su privileges.
Yes u can root and remove bloat with titanium back up then unroot and then the bloat will still be gone. Also I believe u can unroot certain roms. Not sure

I am about to get good next week hopefully , will post back.
I wonder why it wouldn't work on rooted phone's though?
It detects the presence of the su binary among other things and refuses to run.

[Q] TWLauncher

So I accidentally deleted my TWLauncher without replacing it. I turned off my phone and turned it back on to see if it went through the booting system. But the booting system animation stopped right at the "Samsung" title leaving me unable to access the contents of my Galaxy S 4G. Is this a brick? How can you help me fix this problem? Thanks

You can flash a launcher. If on ICS, you can flash TWRP which has a flile explorer you can copy over a launcher with. You can copy one over with ADB.

By you giving a lot more info
You flash TWRP via CWM - TWRP is an alternative to CWM and is touch based. Put a launcher on your SD card, reboot into TWRP same as you would CWM, go into the file explorer, copy the launcher apk and paste it in your system/apps directory.

oh sorry. well uh cant access anything but download mode and system recovery. and i dont have CWM recovery and i have a stock rom. i just need to get a new launcher. how can i do that without accessing anything on my phone?
You can turn you phone on. Let it boot and leave it... even if seeing force close prompts. And try going on your computer and logging in the Playstore and install a third party launcher from your computer.
I'd leave to phone sitting for a bit to give it time to try and install.
Background: I deleted my only launcher once but was still able to access some apps. Example - long pressing search soft key with Super Manager installed - it would prompt to choose Volume Controls or Super Manager. Or long pressing the home soft key pops up recent apps.
Your phone should still be working, it just does not have a GUI interface or desktop for you to see.
Give it a shot.
-----
Or you can flash one of bhundven's Kernel One-Clicks, then flash a launcher or TWRP.

thanks for your suggestions. yes i have tried installing launchers but for some reason (i waited 10 minutes for this) it doesnt go to my phone. i remember freezing the launcher maybe deleted it but when i long press any buttons or the screen nothing neccessarily happens. also im afraid i dont know what super manager is. maybe you have a signed launcher app? i dont have cwm, adb, or anything else. so maybe a signed launcher so that i can flash it?
If you don't have cwm, how are you going to flash?
All stock apps are stickied in the themes ands apps section.
Load a one click on to computer and reflash Rom?
Load the android sdk tools onto your computer and "adb push" it into place?

I am starting to think you aren't reading what I am saying.
AntonX Kernel One-Click Download
If you want to keep your ROM and data intact, go to the link above and download [AntonX: Basic with a Twist SGS4G KJ6 1.1.0]. Use the guide in the second link in my signature to flash it. That WILL GIVE YOU CWM without changing your ROM.
If you are on GB - download the attached zip and flash it in CWM.
I am now bowing out of helping further in this thread. Good luck!
