Android Help- syncing and apps - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Couple of questions so please bear with me. I was an avid winmo user and now, I've delved into the Android realm and am completely lost. I know this has likely been addressed elsewhere but hoping you could direct me in the right direction:
1) For office documents with full editing capablity, which one? docstogo vs quickoffice? Hear mixed reviews about both. Any input? I don't mind buying an app, just want one that is fully functional and easy to use.
2) How do I sync my documents with my windows 7 computer? for example. If I have documents on my computer (.docx, .pptx. .pdf) that I want on my phone, how do I have a sync. For example, in winmo if you edit your doc on your phone, it will save the edits to the pc when synced via activesync. Is there a way I can do that on android?
3) Also, along the same lines, how do I sync any documents? Such as photos taken on my phone, how do I automatically have these things synced to my computer when I plug it in?
Again, I know a lot of these questions are super NOOB but bare with me since I've just switched OS's here and am a little insecure.

advice please: XDA Orbit / Graphite / Outlook / Gmail / CrossOver Office / HEADACHE!

Hi all, I’d like some advice please.
I am still fairly new to all this so please treat me as a noob.
This weekend I removed all traces of Windows from my two computers at home. It is now entirely Linux powered 
It is also upgrade time for me with my phone network (02 in the UK) and I’d like to get a phone that syncs up to one contacts list and does email. Wifi is a must, so I was thinking of the 02 xda Orbit, or maybe the Graphite (when it comes out)
I have also recently set up a gmail account. Busy time!
So now I am not sure what the next step is.
If I ran CrossOver office, would I be able to sync contacts/tasks/mails with (either) devices?
Should I just use gmail on the phone? (Trying to get my PST files into Gmail is proving a *massive* headache though!) and it looks like then the phone would have two contact lists? One for email and one for the phone.
Is there a better solution? I am quite happy to run thunderbird/evolution/something else on the computer, and or phone.
Nothing is set in stone here. I am completely flexible.
I am keen to hear whatever you recommend is the best solution.
Thanks in advance,
John
As ActiveSync would require direct access to the USB or Bluetooth, i doubt it unless the APIs are there (not to sure with CrossOver, but its not done for Wine).
Syncing in Linux with WM5 is a pain, at best you'll have to hand compile Synce and the OpenSync plugin, then setup OpenSync and Evolution. I currently export my info to vcal/vcf, do some script fu on them and bluetooth over to my mobile and use SkTools to remove any dupes.
Another option is to have QEMU running with Windows and ActiveSync on, then forward the USB device onto QEMU to use. I had this half working last night but the XP install i've got has issues with loading new drivers, i'll try again tonight
Thanks for that response - very very helpful.
I thought about the idea of using a host operating system, but I was concerned about processor speed and system load.
This would be for a laptop that is a few years old, and a mail client is the sort of thing I'd always have running. I am very keen to hear the results of your XP tests. If QEMU works, it may be the solution.
If not, I guess the alternatives are using a java gmail app on the phone and manually keeping the contacts inline.
Or wait to see what happens with this OpenMoko project.
I custom patched QEMU 0.8.2 with the USB Multi-interface mod (needed to pickup a HTC device) and tried to set it up, Devices is detected in WinXP but then errors like a hardware issue. It'd possibly work with VMWare as you can specifically assign a device to the VM but i dont think QEMU is up to the job quite yet.
Thanks for the update. I'll keep hacking, and if I have any success, I'll post about it here.
cheers

Financial Management Software?

So, I have been managing my bank account the old fashioned way (paper and pen- specifically, the little book that comes with your checks).
Anyone know of a good software to do it? I know there are a bunch out there, but I was hoping to get a good recommendation for one.
I need one that runs on Windows Vista, and preferably has a Windows Mobile client so I can enter stuff on my phone, and sync it up at the end of the day (and my wife too).
Anyone know of anything like this?
I am using Quicken for PC and inesoft cash organizer for PPC.
There's several very nice packages for PC. If you need to sync then you need MS Money or Quicken. I prefer Money simply because it's much cheaper, both are about the same in functionality. If you don't need to sync than there's more available, some of them cross platform (MoneyDance and GnuCash). GnuCash is also open source and free.
If you want to sync with Windows Mobile, the two top WM apps are either CashOrganizer or SPB Finance. Both are very powerful but neither is perfect. CO has a much more reliable sync engine (in my experience - YMMV) but it doesn't sync investments in any way, shape or form. SPBF syncs them one way (you can see them on PDA but not edit) but I could never make it work 100% (not just investments - I would an notification about 60-90 "unresolved" transactions that just wouldn't go away). I have a 14 year old file that's been migrated from Quicken to Money so that probably complicated things & threw SPB sync engine off. If you start from scratch it may not be a problem. If you don't need investments both are very powerful. There's also some other apps but none as powerful and these two. OTOH your requirements may be different than mine.

Android installation compared to WM

I have some specific questions about Android compared to WM or WP7, whatever. I have been a WM user for quite a long time until WM 6.5 bur never had experience with Android.
I have the following questions:
1) Does Android maintain registry like Windows? In other words, will install/uninstall of test software cause the device to become slower over time or unstable and require hard reset and start from clean?
2) Being a systems engineer, I was able to install several tools including network diagnostic ools on WM. Will I be able to do the same with Android? Better or worse?
3) Can I find similar applications for GPS like those I had on WM? In specific, can I use for example, MLS destinator with Android?
4) Generally, which device is more flexible with applications? (I know that WP7 doesn't have any yet but over time, it will) so, based on that concept, will both devices have the asme capability of handling the same applications or maybe one will be more for games applications and the other for business apps?
1) Uninstall removes everything. You can also selectively wipe data associated to individual apps.
2,3) Maybe you should figure out what you need and ask specific questions Android comes with online maps/navigation and offline apps are for sale on the market.
4) As all first-generation Microsoft products, WP7 will flop. In a few years after pouring countless millions from the OS monopoly it'll be usable...
Moved to General.
Completely agree with Volker. I've used both WinMo and Android, and I'm not going back. I personally feel that Android is much more flexible, especially so because of the open architecture. For the most part, the apps you see in the market will work with most of the modern Android phones. The market itself is a great feature and it's a shame that WinMo didn't really have it. It makes searching for apps really easy, rather than having them floating all over the place and really requiring some searching every now and then for what you might want.
I'm sure you can find equivalent apps to the ones you're looking for, but if you could be a little more specific I'm sure people here would be better able to help you.
And I think WP7 has already been declared a flop in many circles. That's the way it is with their mobile platform, they were too little too late with just not enough put into it to outshine either iOS or Android.
Thanks, I have another concern.
I am a heavy Microsoft Office user. I want all my Outlook calendar, contacts, emails to be in Sync with my phone all the time.
Also, I use Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents a lot on the phone. Will I be able to sync between phone and PC and also compose/modify on the phone? In other words can I have MS Office mobile on Android?
If yes, have you used it? is it reliable/user-friendly?

The default mail program in Froyo will sync mail and contacts with exchange (dun't know 'bout calendar), though I prefer Touchdown from the market (all 3). And OfficeSuite will handle your office needs. Both work fantastic IMHO.
Anyway ,I like WM,may be I have used..

Sync multiple protocol chatlogs Phone/PC

Hi this may be my first post here, don't know, so hi everybody
Currently I have Pidgin IM running on my PC with multiple different IM protocols, all set up nicely.
I currently haven't thought much of it, but recently I had the desire to sync my chatlogs to a IM software on my Android Phone.
I have drop box running on my Phone and PC and I already created a Symbolic Link from my Pidgin chatlogs to my Dropbox, but I don't even know whether or how I could go on from this approach, since it's just HTML chatlogs from Pidgin in there now. Not to mention, this is not really appropriate because of sync delay...and what if my PC is broken (no IM)?
It would be awesome if there was some sort of central IM service on the Internet that could integrate everything IM into one central HUB.
I already thought of settings up 2 seperate IM clients for phone and PC and I did actually do this in the past. But the big problem is then I have some chatlogs split between phone and PC (except for some protocols, e.g. Gtalk which have them server-side). So this has to be done better. It just sucks, kind of.
Would be real cool if someone could help me make an elegant solution and I'm sure a lot of people have this annoyance bugging them, not just me

Non-Android question

Sorry to post this here but I didn't see a forum for this question. My sister is a 3rd grade teacher and she has been thinking of getting a laptop. She specifically wants a Chromebook because they are cheap(and she IS a teacher). The only reason I am hesitant is because she has to use Excel and Word at home doing grades and other teacher-type stuff. I know that I read somewhere that OpenOffice will read and edit MS Office files, I was wondering if anyone knows how reliable they are in this? I know that with other applications sometimes there can be glitches and inconsistencies when opening documents across different apps. I figure someone on this forum is bound to have a Chromebook
Open office works great. if she's passing documents back and forth she'll want to make sure she saves them in an office format. Open office has its own format but you can over ride that.

OpenOffice is great, but there is also the good ol' Google Docs/Google Drive, which can read and edit word and excel files and is basically a full feature suite.
So in your opinions would she be perfectly fine with a Chromebook, or better off spending another $100 or so and getting a really cheap W8 laptop?
I love Chromebooks. BUT I use a laptop because there is no equivalent to MS Office. Open Office is definitely not a real substitute. That is the only reason I still run Windows 7 instead of Ubuntu full time.
edit: BTW, there is a Chromebook forum on XDA. You might receive more/better responses there. FWIW I sold my Chromebook because I found it redundant with my Ultrabook and Nexus 10. When I start my job in September, they will provide me with a work laptop with Windows. At that point, I'll probably buy a Chromebook Pixel as my primary device and use my work laptop when I need access to MS Office. But I just cannot live without MS Office.
