I've got an idea, how about having a TTS service for a ringtone?
So for example if 'John Doe' calls you, the phone will vibrate and say, "hey, you've got a call from John Doe." or better is that we can customize our own text for each contact we have.
If we got a nice TTS voice, it's gonna seem like the phone is talking like a high tech AI XD
any opinion on this??
Hey,
I wrote namebuzz, which will use TTS as a ringtone.

However, I'll take your custom speech idea on board if that's OK. On holiday for two weeks, but will take a look when I get back!
Cheers!

TiKL for Android is a Push to Talk app that uses Voip. Just found this today on the market and have been playing around with it with some friends. Has great potential! I cant post links yet, (if someone could help me out and post one) just do a search for TiKL in the market.
Great app love it has g great potential. Love waking my wife up in the mornings with it. Needs a contacts widget so all you have to so is click on their person to chirp them

Ok
someone please explain to me the usefulness of push to talk. I really never got it, and seriously want to understand how it is used and why it's different than calling someone? And I'm not being sarcastic. REALLY I AM NOT!
Is it just a "doesn't cost minutes" thing? Just a real world scenario where you would use this instead of calling would be great.
We run UPS and Generator tests at my job and there are like 5 of us that need to stay in constant contact with each other while the tests are going on. Some of us are on the first floor of the building, some are on the fourth floor and its way easier to just push to talk rather than dialing every time.

i have had this app for about 2 weeks now and i must say i like it alot..great potential and yet easy to use..i can see this app being around for quite some time with the amount of downloads and 4-5 star ratings from tons of users that have downloaded so far...
two things it needs
1. widget
2. some type of contact list instead of the pop down menu
thanks OP!!!!!!!!!
any way for me and my buddy to communicate with push to talk? he is on WM and IM on android.
Not at the moment. TiKL is only for android.
great app but kills my battery!
this is a nice app, and i dont want to scare anyone away from it but one time a friend of mine was still transmitting to me long after he stopped pressing the button and had put his phone down with the screen off. He wasent able to stop transmitting until after using a task kill

Havn't had that problem yet. It is still in beta remember.
I am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids in both ears and when I choose the HAC mode under Calls in settings, it mutes the audio on both incoming and
outgoing calls. You don't even hear the phone ring but when the call is answered you can't hear the person you called and they can't hear you. With HAC off
the phone works but I can barely hear it with out my aids even with the volume full up. Any one using HAC?

My dad wears hearing aids in both ears, and he recently got an inspire. I'll check with him tomorrow and see what his experience has been.
I know many people consider the volume level of the phone to be too low, I personally don't have any issue with it, but I don't get/make a lot of calls.
My Dad hasn't complained about it so far, and believe me, the guy isn't shy about returning things he isn't happy with, but I'll check with him anyway, and post again later in the day on Monday.

Thanks Scott, if you and your dad don't mind checking it (HAC on and Off)
while making a call it would be great to know what he thinks.

I'll see what I can do. I don't know if he even knows about the HAC mode. I know I didn't until your post.
I won't see him until later today, just doing my morning xda check-in, atm.

Well, he was in a hurry, but I managed to talk a litte bit about it.
I asked him if he knew about the HAC setting, and as I thought, he didnt, so I asked him how the phone was performing in terms of using it with hearing aids, and he actually said it's loud, and that he doesn't even need to use the external speaker, which surprised me.
That explains why I hadn't heard any complaints coming from him, or questions about the HAC mode.
When I briefly glanced at the setting on my phone, it's description does indeed say something like "boosts volume of incoming calls."
If I get the chance again I'll see if he can actually turn the setting on and give him a test call, as you suggested. Like I said, he was in a hurry to get to a dinner engagement.
May not be today, but if you subscribe to this thread, and then check it occasionally, I'll post back when I'm able to get an answer for you.

Thanks Scott, I really appreciate your efforts. By your dad saying that it was loud, they might have turned it on at the store for him, that would be good to know. The HTC support tech told me they have not had any complaints about the HAC, but I have had two phones in two days with the same problem.
capman231
That's something I didn't check. I will take a look at his phone, next time I see him.
I'll keep you posted. Having a dad with impaired hearing, and hoping I don't follow suit later in life, I can sympathize, and won't forget about you...

Thanks for the info gtg465x. Wonder if HTC is aware of this? I have been talking with them and I must say their tech support people are real nice and helpful. They actually speak english with out an accent which makes it easy if your hearing impaired like me. I was surprised that the techs I have been talking to are in Knoxville TN, only 2 hrs from me.
Is there anything you can tell me specifically about this problem that I can pass on to them?

Well on my phone I could hear the other party but they couldn't hear me. All they heard was an echo of themselves. Speakerphone mode worked fine though.
Well that got cleared up, thanks to gtg465x.
Just to follow-up on my previous post, HAC was not enabled on my dad's phone.
And its a darn fine thing, evidently, or else that new phone of his would've been back to Costco in a heartbeat.

Thanks gtg465x, what you describe is what mine does most of the time, but a couple of times when the HTC tech called my phone I couldn't hear him and he couldn't hear me but on several other calls it did exactly what you described.
Thanks to you and also to Scott for all of your input, I really appreciate it.

Any WP7 users out there Hunters? I am a starting developer and one of my ideas is to create a hunting app, IE: Turkey Calls and when to use them. Something like that.
Ideas? Thoughts?
Hmm, interesting idea (but sorry, I'm not a hunter). BTW, are you sure the WP7 speakerphone is loud enough for this purpose? (I have no idea at all how loud are turkey calls)
Usually they are used to help remind the hunter of how he should sound when he is using the calls, I dont think the speaker on the phone will be loud enough at all.
Like it. We could really use something good with solunar tables also. There isn't a decent tide application out either that I have found.

that's what I was thinking too. As soon as I can learn the language, I will start to develop the app.
For some reason Navigation speaks in 2 different voices, sometimes within the same direction. For example, "Turn left in a quater mile' 'onto Main St' would be two different voices, like one is the typical Google voice and one is the Samsung voice. It's not the end of the world, but it is strange. And people in the car have a good chuckle - especially iPhone owners.
I went into languages and input and saw nothing there that would be the cause. And I haven't installed any 3rd party navigation or voice apps. Any ideas? Thanks
I have the same thing with google nav, I'll have a Womans voice then a mans with an American accent right after
No idea why???

This happened to me yesterday....was especially strange having two different voices split the task of yelling at you. LOL
Both my SGS3 and my husband's Galaxy Nexus do this. We haven't figured out why.
Just got back from the beach, and mine did this all the way down and back. 2 different female voices.
Was mildly annoying, but they got me where I needed to be.

Well at least it's not just me I guess. Surprised that it's not just me at the same time. Very odd.
we all have it. I do as well. no rhyme or reason.

Wahaha yesss exactly! I was just on a trip from New Jersey to Maine, and my GS3 and my bf's HTC Evo 3D both had the split-personality navigation voices lol. It would go from the normal perky sounding voice to the older-been-smoking-too-many-years voice... Multiple Personality Disorder, I tell ya!!!
Strange my old Incredible running ICS never had this issue.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Mine does this aswell. Seemed to happen alittle while back. I think they added a more natural sounding voice into the app that sounds great...but its not full baked and old robot woman comes back from time to time.
Its typical google quirk in action...It makes me laugh.
I have noticed this as well (before GPS stopped working on my phone). I was having the original robot woman voice, and other times a young energetic natural sounding one at others. It seemed to happen when switching from one road to the next but other times it was random.
The new voice sounds similar to the Google Now voice, so maybe they are slowly changing things over to the Now voice but bits at a time as things are completed. Either way, at least she will finish what sh is saying BEFORE i have to make the turn now!
Sometimes my goes from regular voice to extremely slow. This usually gets fixed if I exit navigation and turn off/on data before turning it back on again.

Just to close this out, after an update to GMaps the problem stopped. Though now there is a slight delay between "in a quarter mile" and "make a right at..." no big deal though

sometimes happens to me, I hear totally two different voices when I'm using my GPS, and I don't really care but I wonder why lol
Can I just say that I love a couple of the Samsung Apps? Sure S Finder is pointless (to me) and S Voice needs to get WAY better for me to use it, the voice is far too robotic (unless people know something I'm doing wrong? High quality voices?) and it lacks some grammar understanding. But S Health, S Note and a couple others are actually damn good. To date I haven't found an app that is as accurate as S Health is for mo I to ring my activity. It does struggle when GPS is weak to maintain an accurate speed (I walk faster than 2 S Health, we both know this, haha), but my word is it good..just could it stop using the really awful robotic Samsung voice? S Note is another good one, it does things incredibly well, scrapbook isn't bad, I use it from time to time, and the camera app is closing in on the LG idea. Though LG still has far better manual control, and it STAYS IN MANUAL MODE IF YOU PUT IT THERE...SAMSUNG..I WANT RAW, NOT JPG. I digress, I still love some of their apps. They really have come a long way!
There are higher quality voices, but I still prefer to use Google Now, but definitely agree with S Health and S Note. Can't find anything like em on the store

I've migrated to S Voice because Google Now is no longer working correctly for me. Anytime I tell it to call or text someone, it pulls up a freaking search page.

Yeah..I'm going to give S-Voice a try, Google Now has decided it wants to never let me use "ok google". I can set it up a million times and it just never works. Sad, I'll miss that. It was working two days ago too, it's confusing. Also! So Voice can READ MY MESSAGES TO ME, haha.
