There is NO option to install applications from untrusted sources. This means anything on your SD card, downloaded from the web or over your wifi at home WILL NOT WORK. Naturally, you also cannot use the "su" command in terminal.
Therefore, you need to use ADB push in order to get anything done.
Here is an ADB guide Motorola Backflip for AT&T.
[ADB Setup Shortcut/Send to] Motorola Backflip
Once you have all that figured out, you can ROOT using [APP] z4root.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Just run the SuperOneClick rooting tool. Click root. Wait till its done. Click Enable Non-Market apps. Restart Phone. Install apps from the SD card.
You dont get actual root but you can install any app you want no hassle.

This is confirmed. I ran SuperOneClick. It ran all the way through with no errors like I got root and then I clicked Allow Non Market Apps. After disconnecting and rebooting, of course I truly did not have root, but I tried installing a non market apk file from my sd card and it worked!! It did not add the option to the settings menu, but nonetheless it is enabled. This should work great for the Amazon Appstore now. Thanks for the heads up!!
Confirmed x2 - this was all I was looking for ATM.. Didn't think about using the ol SuperOneClick
SOC will give you temp root until you reboot.
All you need is temp root to enable Non-market apps...I suggested this to people a month or so ago.
Glad to see it show up again. Its a super-easy solution for those not wanting full root, but still wanting sideloading.
It's even easier to do than the Sideloading wonder machine...
Works great. I still think its time for me to go all the way.
Gives temp root? Sweet all I need

THANK YOU just what I needed, sideloading on the go..!!! WORKS..

At first Amazon store was cool getting a couple free apps. Then I realized they don't transfer over and you have to continue using amazon store to update them. Kinda sucks just to save a couple bucks.

I have read all this stuff about ADB but I'm not totally sure what that is. I was great with other ways of rooting before this phone but Z4 made that easy I only need root to remove bloatware and really need free wireless tether working as it was on my DX with Froyo. Has root and tht wireless tether been confirmed as working for sure? Anyone have the files needed to root and maybe a step by step to describe it all. I dont even know where to look for this ADB thing. And if successful what tether app would I need. I am new here but I'm tired of looking.
Thanks
Rob
To get adb working you have to download android sdk, to use adb you'll have to change a path in environmental variables( search Google or YouTube for how to) check out 4shared.com forZ4root.apk. or a simple search for rooting Samsung charge, the info is out there and are the videos. Searching is key!! Good luck

Hello i recently bought a motorola defy mini 600mhz 512mb ram 150mb internal storage and a 16gb sd card.
I have a couple of apps and the internal storage is already full, this is my first android phone and i have heard of rooting but it hasnt been discovered for my phone.
Is it possible to set the sd card memory to be seen as internal memory?
And is it possible to install a new android version?
Thank you

same siatuacion here
What can we defy mini users do?
Only wait for the root method to be discovered?
Sent from my XT320 using XDA
i think so
Setting sd as internel memory is commonly referred to as "partitioning", where a part of the sd is used as internel mem...
However, for that, you require root access, and a kernel that supports init.d scripts...

How can i know when rooting becomes availible for the defy mini?
Sent from my XT320 using XDA
That is a difficult question to answer...
Does your device have a forum on xda? (Check in the legacy and low activity sub-forum)
If it has, things get a little easier since people can then come together and experiment with different methods...
I'm guessing it does not, so the next thing left is trial and error...
If you are willing to risk your warranty and a possible bricked device, you can try a few of the popular gb methods (I'm assuming your phone is on gb), like gingerbreak, superoneclick, or unviersal root tool etc...
HOWEVER, do this at your own risk, as you cannot hold anyone else responsible for any damages...
Also, from what I've heard, motorola phones usually have a locked bootloader...and unfortunately, I have no experience with such devices (as mine does not have a locked bootloader)...messing around with the bootloaders increases chances of bricking...

I doubt if SuperOneClick does the job. Rooting your phone is easy as 123 with that tool, but on some phones it turns out to nothing. I guess they already tried it.
It didn't work on my poor Mini...
It would be the best if you wait for an official method.
Sent from my GT-S5570 using XDA
Yeah i have already used it but it didnt work.
I hope the official method comes out soon because its quite long since the release of the phone.
Sent from my XT320 using XDA
Official method?
A phone gets root as people try to root it...there's nothing that the manufacturer does!
Its all trial and error...or some people study the source and find out ways to root!

Oh well by official method i was refering to a real coder or developer would find a way to root it.

I mean a method that is tested by some pro people that know how to root it.
By the way, you might want to read this thread.

That seems intresting but where do I get a rooted gingerbread userdata partition image (aka CG37) from?
I will try that method out and if it works or not I will report back.

So.. did someone managed to finally root the Defy Mini? How can a phone this cheap be so hard to root?
The processor in this phone can run from 600 to 800Mhz (as Qualcomm says), but it is blocked to 600 on the official room. This cpu should run fine at 900-1000Mhz. Also we would get even better performance if we manage to put a stock android on it and get rid of Motorola bloatware.
Din pacate inca nimica.
Unfortunatly nothing yet.
hey i dont know whether this works or not but i found a flashable zip to root....
www . mediafire . com/?6a863tfqb9pc2d9(note der r some space in links bcoz my links are not visible without space...so remove spaces in link and go to link)
flash this file in recovery and see whether this file roots motorola defy mini or not....
pls reply what happens...
i am just helping you all to get your phone rooted pls dont insult me if it doesnt root

I feel like i've been searching all morning for a way to use .ttf files for system font.s. I absolutely do not want to root my phone, so I'm wondering how I can get this font from dafont on my phone called cafe & brewery...I usually use the flipfonts on the google market that are $0.99 but I wish I could just use my own. Can anyone help me out? I apologize if this is posted in the wrong section.

I tried using z4root. I don't think it works with the samsung stratosphere. & I know this board is the galaxy 3, but from what I heard they're practically the same phones. There's no easy way to root a stratosphere, & even though I'm pretty decent with technology surrounding computers and blackberry's, I am relatively new to android software. :/

Download SuperOneClick v1.9.5.0, enable "USB debugging" option under "Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging" on your phone, connect it to PC and click the big ROOT button and you're one of the happy ROOTed users out there in XDA
z4ROOT works for this phone also, but only on 2.1 (Eclair). For 2.2, use the method described above. HAPPY WARRANTY VOIDING
buh.....you can flash any custom kernel with adb root and push fonts to your system without rooting it...
