Did anyone notice the apps Shazam and Where are gone from Market downloads? Those are the best free apps out there and it is completely gone. I feel so lost now.

Just search google for the apk and sideload it...
Edit, Shazam is back not sure whats going on with Where.
Edit2, Where? must not be available on Rogers either. I use Poynt. It's just as useful to me.
WHERE isn't available from an AT&T connection, as they have their own WHERE on their Android phones.
How it's filtered I don't know.
thanks guys. I have t-mobile but Shazam and Where is still missing from Market. It must be a carrier thing but I thought we all share the same android Market. I even tried a search for Poynt and that wasn't in Market either. I do have the apk for Shazam and I tried to install it but It failed (the same install worked last time). So I think these two great apps are gone for good from T-mobile.
I can find Shazam here in the UK.
try sound hound. blows shazaam out the water
I just checked my market (Motorola Droid running CM v6.0.0) and both Where and Shazam both show up. So it must be a carrier thing, not an Android Market thing.
Such a shame but thanks for recommending Sound Hound. It works great. One down and one to go.

I'm pretty sure you can get poynt from the website (but it just may email you a link to the market I'm not sure).
http://poynt.com/android.html
yes, it's just a link to the market and it's not available off the market. But thanks anyways.
Have you tried the market enabler? I was told something about changing regions but I've never installed it. Might be worth a try if you have a free minute.
nope no different. anyone know of an app that will replace "Where"?
bump 10chars
Every phone "shares the same Market" as you said, but we're not allowed to walk down the same aisles. Developers can filter their app to not be visible by certain carriers or in certain countries, so you may not see it on T-Mobile but somebody on Verizon might.
As for Where, there are a million of those location awareness apps that can replace it. They may not be as good or to your preference, but Poynt, Yelp, Geodelic, etc. might do the core features.

IMO, Google Places and GasBuddy replaces WHERE. If you really want the food etc type stuff, add Yelp too.
Or download the WHERE apk I suppose. It's around.
I have a nexus one running cm6 on T-Mobile USA and both of the apps show up on the market just did a quick search to make sure
The PayPal Mobile app disappeared for me from Verizon's market after I upgraded my Droid X to 2.2. Apparently it's still visible to 2.1 users, presumably since Verizon has been so slow about officially pushing out Froyo. I finally tracked down the APK and all is well.
The geographic/version limitations of the market are silly in the 'big picture' but I guess they make sense from a business standpoint for the carriers and everyone else getting a piece of the pie

I have the same specs as well but it still isn't visible in market. So I guess it's area specific? I'll give those other apps a try. Thanks guys. It's just more convenient when you have just one app that can complete multiple functions instead of having two or three apps.

Where did you find the PayPal apk? I've been trying to find it and get it from PayPal for quite some time now...
EDIT: Never mind. I was able to find the apk from Android Freeware.
They replaced Shazam for Shazam Encore now, so now its no longer unlimited tagging its replaced to 5 tags a month now. You have to buy it to get ad free and also get it unlimited tags

Pure vanilla Android.
There's a bunch of stuff preinstalled on it, but it's all Google stuff; I don't think there's any third-party apps.

I'm curious as to what you consider Google bloatware, because the Nexus S is about as plain as you can get. Most of the time bloatware is stuff added by OEMs, such as the preinstalled demo games on the MT4G. Mind elaborating?
I can't speak for JC, but in my mind, anything that comes preinstalled on a device which I neither want nor need is bloatware. This, of course, makes the entire concept subjective, but in general with things like Android, I think less is more, since you can download nearly all of these things from the Market anyway. The consumer-side justification of "bloatware" (revenue for the provider, of course, being the primary, producer-side justification) is to present the user with access to a service they might otherwise not know to look for. ("Oh, hey, my phone can play TV/can display YouTube/has internet radio/whatever!"). For most of us though, particularly anyone savvy enough to be on XDA in the first place, most of it ends up falling into one of three categories:
-Don't care about
-Use a different app for
-Would have downloaded if it wasn't included.
In any case, I've observed that what most people have the biggest issue with isn't that stuff may come preinstalled on their phone, it's that you can't get rid of it, and if you do, you may well open yourself to a world of trouble should you ever wish to install an OTA update.
I would consider it plain android, as the "bloatware" on it is really only google apps, which come with all android phones. It doesn't have bloatware from a third party though like some of the other android phones. Either way, bloatware can be removed off any rooted phone with titanium backup

Fair enough points.
Unfortunately, we still run into that last issue even on the Nexus S. Folks were unable to update via the stock 2.3.1 OTA if they had modified system files, such replacing the stock Mms.apk or Gmail.apk with the black/custom ones from the Themes & Apps section or deleting any of their relevant .odexs. Even placing the missing files back on the system partition didn't seem to work, at least for me. It was a very curious update.

True, but it does still support up to 7.2Mbps down which you'll only get in a t-mobile 4g area.
I was just in Orlando and i was getting around 5-6Mbps on my N1 and in a Nexus S i was testing at best buy and it was pretty damn fast. puts my DSL connection at home to shame.

I don't think Google has an office app for Android. Every device has launched with some kind of partnered 3rd party, either ThinkFree, or Quickoffice. At least, I think those are the two they've used.
If they didn't, you wouldn't be able to read any kind of text document on your phone and that's just kind of a silly thing to not be able to do, imo.
EDIT: And on that note, Google should probably make a office app! lol
Who really cares whats installed or not, EVERYTHING can be uninstalled.
after using ThinkFREE for a while on the Galaxy S, i can say it's really good
way better than the Docs To Go and/or QuickOffice which i'm using on the XT720
but truth is... you don't need any of those with Google Office online, it's so much easier to keep things and work with documents using Google Office Online

Google JUST released it a few minutes ago, it's in the market now, update your Maps.
To go 3D mode, use two fingers and swipe down. It'll "tilt" the map. If you're in an area that has the 3D vector maps, you'll see it (try San Francisco).
You can also then use two fingers and rotate the map.

Mine says t-mobile as well.
I had AT&T SIM in when I got my phone, and it said Downloads and had WIFI Tether (root app) available for download.
After I signed up for T-Mobile and used that SIM, the tab turned into T-Mobile, and no WIFI Tether in the market (there's another thread listing some apps missing from T-Mobile market)
It's all very odd. Ever since I had my N1, the third tab was ALWAYS Downloads. Then, I manually upgraded to the new Market. (2.2.6) When going to Market on the Nexus S, the third tab is T-Mobile. I really hope when switching to the newer Market that it goes away.

Yeah, I noticed that there were some apps missing from the Market as well, but this may be because of the transition from 2.2 to 2.3. Back in the day when we were moving from 2.1 to 2.2 there was a whole to-do about some apps not showing in the market and it had to do with developers not checking some options/settings to do with security or something in their app(s).
I suppose it's the price we pay for being on the bleeding edge. I did notice that apps that were sitting on my SD card on my Nexus One were not transferred over and I'll need to redownload them.
OT: How would I got about transferring settings, save games, etc. onto my Nexus S? This is the one thing that irks me about resetting a phone/moving to a new phone. Apps are transferred but settings/saves are not.

That's lame. I hope Google continues to make phones with a fixed amount of storage so that they can backup everything to the cloud. Due to them knowing what's on the phone, they can then restore the apps and saves for us.

I saw somebody mention that Zinio is included in the 3.1 update. Is this correct?
I had previously installed it with directions here, but it's a little funky. First, it gave me about eleven sample magazine issues. The size of the magazines on the library screen seems to be a little off and the app is otherwise quirky.
Everyone experiencing this, or was it because I had the other version installed? Any way to fix this?
Thanks!
As of today, Zinio is up on the market. Should be able to grab it on 3.0.

Cool, I'll just remove it and reinstall just to make sure everything is okay.
It keeps freezing on me when I try to open a Magazine for more info. Cant delete it as well since it came with 3.1. Going to try to install it from the app store as it keeps telling me to update it.
I kind of wish all of these free applications weren't pushed out to us. Especially since you can find most of these apps on the Market if you want them anyway. I have no use for Zinio and don't feel like rooting just to remove it. Though, compared to my DX, I definitely can't complain about bloatware. And, to be honest, most of the "bloat" added by ASUS has proved to be quite useful
Updated the version from market and it's works!
Free magazines.............hmmm....not bad!
Keep it up Asus...I love your bloat wares
First....free newspapers and now free magazines....hahaha....iPad 2 Killer!
Can anybody confirm that the preinstalled version includes the free magazine subscription offer detailed in Zinio's press release?
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...roid-market-for-tablet-devices-122859609.html
If not, might be worth trying to install the app first, then let it upgrade when Asus' update hits for the US market...
The free newspapers thing is a total waste of time for me -- seven free issues is next to nothing. A free two year subscription to one of 25 magazine (or is it all 25? The press release isn't clear) seems quite worthwhile though.

And suddenly the lightbulb came on. Of course you're right, the way it was phrased just threw me off. It's one issue of each magazine listed. (Well, they've actually listed 25 magazines as included, and per your own experience there are only 23 available, but near enough the same thing.)
...which to me is a complete waste of time, and makes me again wish Asus would stop jamming this bloat down our throats. Like the newspapers, it is one more thing I'll never use, and one more icon obscuring the apps I actually do want to use. (Not to mention wasting space and resources on my tablet.)
Thus far the only thing I've found worthwhile among Asus' preinstalled apps is Splashtop Remote Desktop, and that can currently be bought standalone for just 99 cents.
I really wish Asus would give us a version without all the bloatware installed, and just let us buy our own apps. Saving a few cents on the one app I do use isn't worth it to me to have all the other junk I'll never touch on there too...
Probably because Zinio pays them per install or account created from one of their devices...
(I'm guessing.)

Yup, that's usually the case with this kind of bloat -- the manufacturer gets paid to put it all on there, in the hopes that it'll lead to you paying the software company to use the product that's stuck on your machine.
I doubt they're getting paid much to stick all the junk on, though, and I'd happily pay $10-15 to have it all taken back off.

As for splashtop our version can be set to the ASIs resolution of 1280x800 whereas the market version only goes to 1024x768. So I don't consider any of it bloatware but rather good apps I would have purchased anyway.

Good luck! It now includes a FREE service and premium for $2.99
Just tried it and the basic service and it's really fast, i might prefer it to google nav
EDIT: Added apk, hope it helps!
EDIT 2: Found this on Captivate Apps Section, so please don't think I am taking any credit.
Apparently: "if you go to the Telenav OTA site at ota.telenav.com/tn and click T-Mobile as your carrier, then click the Vibrant 4G, it is completely compatible"
"Also, unlike Google Nav, TeleNav will continue to work without a tower signal, it will just tell you to turn without the street name"
Good luck. I have a myTouch 4G running CM7 nightlies and was able to find it on market and it works so good luck!

I still don't know why Google complies with these "requests", they should just tell the carriers to pack sand and release the apps (or features) anyways.
I literally just did a hangout on the way home yesterday over mobile data. Is this an updated version of Google+? Maybe I won't update.
Nevermind- just followed the links and saw that this is the *new* hangout app which is going to replace Talk apparently. What I'm not clear about is whether this replaces the Talk apk or the Google+ current apk?
Did some more reading. So this is in fact a Talk replacement. From the Play Store:
First, title is Hangouts (replaced Talk)
and then
NOTE: If you aren't yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store "Open" button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!
So they will push this out to all. Not really a big deal since you couldn't video with talk right now anyway. But from an integration perspective it sucks. I'm wondering why AT&T would block this and still allow the google+ app to do hangouts over their network. They must assume that many more would use this over the Google+ app.
It also notes that there will be no "invisible" mode. Kinda stupid to take that away. I use it all the time. I hope they don't force the updates.

I still don't know why Google complies with these "requests", they should just tell the carriers to pack sand and release the apps (or features) anyways.

ATT is the client here...i dont agree with their policies but it is in their full right to make those demands. Imagine if you have kids, and you dont want your kids to go on X and Y sites, well you can ask the provider to block those websites. The kids might not agree with their parents but the fact is, it is their rights. And before the trolls come in and start saying that this and that doesnt hold up in my story, please, shhhhush, it's an analogy of principale and not a fact.
Does anyone know how to force the Hangouts update? I still have Talk and I can't figure out how to update to Hangouts. I can't from play via browser or the play app.
I found a APK online and when I try to install, it says "did not update" or something. I checked "install from other sources", but it didn't help.
anyone have any idea how to force the update without root.

I could see that argument maybe if you are talking about subsidized phones which (again arguably) are leased from the carrier, but the same restrictions apply if you have bought your phone outright.
In this instance (or in the case of Wallet) Google is a 3rd party software developer, to try for a similar analogy it's if my kids teacher told the grocery store not to sell me certain foods because they don't want my kid eating them.

If you are rooted just downnload Titanium Backup and Uninstall the Talk App, then download Hangouts from Play Store, that's what I did last night, if you are not rooted then I still don't know how to do it.

I tried exactly that, even rebooted after uninstalling Talk but before installing hangouts but I was still not able to start a video chat over cellular.

yes, but an outright phone is still "renting" service from ATT regardless. Its like when you buy or rent a modem from an internet company, or a car, or anything else for that matter, if the provider said no, then you wont get your candy. in any case, we have already determined that ATT are aholes, they block so much good stuff for their clients, i'm speaking about tethering, facetime and other, i dont know why US carriers are like that but here in canada, we dont have all those restrictions, and we are just north of you, we technically can share line and service...

How do you guys even bother with such a crappy cell phone provider? Blocking boot-loaders, and blocking google hangout now? What the hell?
I am with Telus in Canada and they allow eveything.

Couldn't we just follow the instructions from said site and that would enable us access?

You can force the update by installing through the Play Store on a browser instead of the Play Store app.
