I'd like to do the following:
1: I'd like to have custom email, sms, etc icons that show how many messages I have. As you can imagine there would be many other uses for this.
2. I'd like to have custom shortcuts that perform system functions (turning on GPS, Wifi, etc) and reflect the on/off state of the function it represents.
Anyone know of an existing way to do this?
Thanks!!
1. There are applications on the market for this. You would just need to unpack it and add your own image, that would disable updates though and you would have to repeat the process for each update.
2. Power control widget?
1. Any idea what these apps are called?
2. I hate the look of most power control widgets... are any of them skinnable?
Use Weather and Toggle Widgets. The "Donate" version supports skinning.

I'm waiting to see how Samsung Froyo runs before I go and install any custom roms.

So i have been working on something for awhile it started on paper and Made an example in Photoshop. the Idea is you open the notification bar and you swipe left and right to move through open applications and swipe up to end them Check out attachment.
PS: I am not a programmer so I cant make this happen I just thought of it..
BTW: can you control applications from the notification bar?? if not then this is worthless...
That would be really, really good. And I like your mock-up concept as well.
Sort of like the new Dolphin HD tab browser.
You should suggest this to one of the Launcher devs.
good..because the notification bar is always on top..will be great for multitasking.
That's why I tried to do in TaskOS ( free on the Market.)
I do not use the notification bar, but a long press on the search button ( if your device doesn't have one, in the settings you can choose camera button and will try to add more)
The screenshot should be working in some custom realease of CyanogenMod..

Putting something like this in place of long pressing the home button would be the best way I would think.
I like the idea *!*!
possible? Maybe. I think of the interaction of seepu+ as an interaction example, but I don't even wasn't to think about the memory that would suck up.
Do you plan on having all the apps in memory up there? Cause that's gonnna be alot of swiping to find what you need.
Also you already have the hold down home button. That's accessible even with the notification bar hidden (various browsers, apps hide the not. bar).
I really don't get the desire to have thumbnails on handhelds for what the activity is doing. 1) they will always bee too small to use by glancin 2) you know what your switching to, before you even bring up the recent apps function. 3) There is very little "visual" activities done on a phone that warrant a "preview" in order to choose which you want to pick.
All of you could also try Power Strip and Quick Desk for great multitasking usage with the search and homescreen buttons
ITS a CONCEPT not going to happen by me...
yes, multitaslk view is more important
i like your idea of thumbnail view of each programs running in the background. it allows us to look through all running programs, instead of small icons
If it is possible, it can be shown either using the search or home button
Good concept, but I'd be thinking of using the icon of the software instead of screen preview. Better for privacy...

yes I think this is the ****! we don't need the system programs that are running, just the user programs...

The system can't differentiate between what programs the user launched and which were launched into memory automatically.

Well, it can eliminate system programs, and widgets, and programs with no launcher icon, and services, and...
so Anyone interested in making my concept a reality??

What is your problem with the apps that we send you? They do exactly what you want exept they are not in task bar ( because we cannot "draw" into the taskbar)
TaskOS
Power Strip
Quick desk
The "screenshot" will be available in some custom ROMS:

i have zero problems with whats available im just trying to do something different and i saw that thread i know all about it...
EDIT: in fact im a huge fan of TaskOS i use it all the time!
I'm looking for info on how to get into modifying ROM's. I can do the basic stuff like replacing system apps, kernel, modem so far.
Looked at this thread but it wasn't that informative and apparent not entirely correct ether. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885048
Things I'm looking for/to-do:
-List of apk's that are absolute necessary to have all ASOP functions work. OR a list of everything that can be removed and have all ASOP functions work.
-Change the time on MMS from received to sent.
-Change system settings defaults
-Faster pull down/up notification bar animation
Things I would like to do but not sure are possible (where should I look to try):
-Change functionality of button/button long press. ie. use google's gesture search when long pressing menu instead of default search.
-When using the "back" button to exit an app auto kill it. Do not kill/act normal if exiting app using "home" button.
-Remove app icons from notification bar that are running in foreground. ie. tasker
-Block apps from running on startup/in background. Yes I'm aware of autorun manager
-Disable lockscreen toggle, possibly add to lock screen chooser? yes I know there is the app no lock.
-If a text message fails to send keep retrying till it does send. (This really bothers me, my old "dumb" sony ericsson did exactly that)
I would like to minimize the use of apps that change functionality as much as possible and would like to make the modifications directly to the ROM.
Question, when using an apk that is modified like the themed black market apk, I assume it does not get updates through the market?
Is it possible to put widgets on the lock screen without the use of widget locker?
I'm guessing there are threads for these, if someone could point me to them I would appreciate it, if not I'll probably find them eventually
Accurate battery mod
Extended power menu options
Lock Screen Chooser
I plan on starting on already made roms from xda to start with.
I would greatly appreciate any info or direction.
Thanks
Did you happen to look at the sticky on "how to create ROMS" located at the top of this forum?
I did, and I did forget about it. It does help a bit, now I can decompile apk's.
Could someone point me to the file in the mms.apk that would contain the value to change the received to sent?
In general there is tons of files in the rom's and apk's, how does one go about locating the files that contain the info that one would like to change?

That's the fun part.
I use the blind squirrel method myself.
Sent from my Captivate.
lol, at 1,250 files for one apk..... how many blind squirrels does it take?
So far I've found something different between a "stock" mms.apk and a mms.apk that displays the sent time.
Code:
Stock mms.apk:
<string name="sent_on">%s</string>
Sent mms.apk:
<string name="sent_on">Sent: %s</string>
Though assume this just means one has the "sent" prefix and one doesn't...

i will agree with this....
Hey Guy's,
I'm currently on WolfBreaks GingerBread 2.3.3 Build v3.7.0, and i'm wondering if there are any compatible Notification bar power control widget mods that i can apply to this rom? His ROM is nearly perfect in my opinion, the only real thing i'm missing is the convenience of being able to turn things on or off from status bar like bluetooth, gps, etc.. like i did with Cyanogen based mods in the past.
This comes in super handy especially when my phone is docked in car mode. Saves me the trouble of having to fiddle with backing out of an app to turn these features on or off while driving.
I am aware that there are apps on the market that already provide this functionality like the Widgetsoid app, however what i'm looking for is a more elagent tightly integrated mod that fits in with the overall theme and does not look like a widget was simply placed on the pull down tray.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Also, my apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, i did search but could not find an answer to my question before posting.
I should also clarify what i mean by "tightly integrated", apps like Widgetsoid only "link" to a separate pop-up menu where the control is turned on or off. So it takes several clicks and various screens to turn something on or off. What i want is to be able to turn the various different options on or off with a single click right from the Notification bar, like you find in the Cynaogen mods.

Dude, I use widgetsoid2 since forever and no pop up windows to Turn things on or off........ even with apn.......but its not in the notification window....
Skeb, that's the problem though. When you do place Widgetsoid in the notification bar, it no longer works with a single click. I already have widgets placed on my desktop for for turning various things on or off, and they do work with a single click. However when driving with google navigation turned on for example, i want to be able to do the same by swiping down the notification tray to enable bluetooth with a single click, without having to go to the desktop to use the widget, then go back to navigation.
Try it yourself, when you place any of these widgets on your notifcation tray it will no longer work with a single click, it instead brings up a seperate pop up window.
It's not exactly a deal breaker, but if i can get the same functionality that i had using Cyanogen mod's, then i would be really happy!
Agreed, I would love that feature too!
To those who care about this feature. I just wanted to post an update that WolfBreaks's GB rom will now be introducing Cyanogen style status bar control widgets in his v4.0 rom which will be released very shortly. I also noticed that EWJet CM7 port also includes this. Nice to know i did not have to wait long to see this feature!

There is no such thing as "EWJet CM7 port",
it's still stock SE ROM, tweaked!
Just to clear out the confusion!
But yes, statubar toggles are finally here for stock ROMs!
You can use widgetsoid, its an app that adds this functionality

walidhiphop thanks, you would think people could take a second to read when the thread is still just a single page long. Not that i'm trying to diss anyone for trying to help and provide advise, but it doesn't take much effort to read a page of text either.
i wan a status bar with a feature that can adjust the screen off time..
Just a poke to let you know about this very useful app for our beloved ChaCha.
The widget shorcuts bar to control wifi, bluetooth, gps, sync and brightness takes a full line on the desktop.
Also, there are missing some icons like network mode and network data ones.
Enter 'Notification Toggle', an app that creates one or two extra lines in the notifications/status unfolded bar, and allows to put there those icons and many more, preset and even custom.
Some switches require root access, like GPS/NFC on/off, and direct reboot or power off.
It takes a bit of trial and test to make it work the way you like, but it really worths it.
The app itself is free, but donations are accepted by the author.
I removed the standard widget and started using this.
This guy (or people) also have another apps and surely you will find some or all of them useful, too.

Hi everyone, just got my XZ yesterday & liking it so far, though I do miss some aspects that I loved from my Z3 & so have a few questions regarding a few things..
1) I miss small apps as I used to use the calculator from there a lot - is there another way I can access this without having to come out of tabs etc?
2) Permanent Google Search bar on every window - loved this feature on the Z3 - again is there no option for this or do I have to add a widget to each pane now as an alternative? (Which I'm not too fond of..)
3) I have restored everything from my old calendar on the Z3 to the XZ now, but one thing that's bugging me is that I cannot find a way to change colours of my past events? (Sounds petty but quite important to me). Not sure if I can add colours to new events as haven't tested yet but it's so annoying as everything is green, and I'm quite OCD and like to have colour co-ordination with my events etc lol..
4) No vibrate/no sound option anymore or is this the same as the 'Do not disturb' feature? Not keen on this either as I can't adjust stuff like having vibrate on when this feature is being used...
Think that's it for now...
Thanks for any help, always appreciated!
To answer your second question: Do not disturb = No Vibration and no Sound. You can set priorities for Apps though.
For question #1, if you're in Nougat you can use the multi-window support.

Open an app then long press the recent apps button until the recent apps are shown an the bottom. Select the app you want to open as the second active app. Should you want to change app, simply press the recent apps button again then choose from the recent apps. If you want to end it, drag down the black bar or long press the recent apps button.
P.S. I hope I made myself clear.???
