Which Smart Phone? - General Topics

Hey guys, my first thread here.
I live in Canada, so I don't get much of smartphone selections up here.
Here's several phone that I think I will like, and I want you guys to help me decide.
Phones I think I would like, and some basic understanding from me of the pros and cons(I love the HTC Droid Incredible the best, too bad we dont have it up here :[ ):
HTC Desire
Pro:
Sense UI
No Cons
Galaxy S Vibrant [This actually should be a i9000, they call it vibrant up here]
Pro:
Super AMOLED Screen (Although I know that the iPhone 4 screen is brighter)
4" Display
Cons:
Lagging Issues
No Flash on camera
a lot of little software issues
Plasticy(a case or skin can cover that)
UPDATE: Galaxy S Captivate is coming to us this September, Same Pros and Cons except it doesnt have as much software issues?
iPhone 4
Pros:
Better Music Player
Great Support (Obviously a very popular phone)
Definitly a lot of better apps, for now
Cons:
No Adobe Flash
Blocking Signals, although I know from friends that it is not a big issue at all
if you got a good point that another phone might be better, i might change my mind

iphone, generally garbage, if you have any self respect dont get it
Sense UI sucks, everyone with a good phone like that flashes cyanogen or something like that
and galaxy S feels plasticky

HTC Desire vs Samsung Galaxy S

Since my polaris is broken, i have to get myself a new phone...
I'm thinking about getting HTC Desire or the Samsung Galaxy S...
Which one do you guys think is best?
HTC all the way!!
The Galaxy S has better specs but it lacks the build quality and software of HTC...So for me it's a no-go anymore!
I've been thinking about these two as well. For me, although the Galaxy S would be great, the lack of software support historically from Samsung, as well as a less certain level dev support for custom roms(the desire has strong dev support), the Desire seems like a slightly better choise. Also, since it and the Nexus One are so similar, any future updates (eg 3.0) are likely to be ported fairly fast, even if HTC decides not to.
I've recently changed from a Polaris to a Desire and the difference is amazing, it's like how I always wanted the Polaris to work but 100 times better! Some people say the HTC implementation of Android makes the transition more intuitive from WM6.1/6.5 to Android. In terms of Galaxy S, the specs seem better but not sure how this translates to real life.
For Games/Entertainment and embarrassing because it looks like iPhone:
Samsung Galaxy S
Or if you want hate Gameloft, UV/OC your CPU until MADNESS, overclock the adreno so it can run Crysis 2, "P0WNING NOKIA" by installing MeeGo, to love, hate, and love the opticall trackball, for a phone that will last 4 years through upgrading...
iHTC NDesire EVO S 4G Streak
Ok j/king it's the desire.
If I'd go back in past, I'd tell myself to wait and buy the Galaxy S. Someone, tell me why is my HTC Desire better then Galaxy S, WHY

It isn't.
If you want a phone, get the Xperia X10. You may regret it, you may love it.
But you'd know one thing, you were the ONE that didn't chose the HTC or the Samsung.
The Desire is better in my opinion, just go test it and you will love it
Ok man don't listing to these guys, especially these haters, let your mind or hearth choose. This is just the wrong place to ask...
Wow okay the suggestions here have been pretty bad (not all though) so let's break this down step by step.
The screen:
The Galaxy S wins for the display department no matter which way you look at it. It has a 4 inch SUPER amoled display while the Desire only has a 3.7 inch amoled display. In addition, the Galaxy S also sports the new MaxTouch sensor, which allows for a more responsive touchscreen and none of the "glitches" that the Desire, the N1, and all other previous HTC devices have.
Speeds:
Both devices are quick. The Desire has slightly more ram to compensate for Sense. It also has more support for overclocking and undervolting which could potentially make it a faster PHONE.
However as a gaming device, the Galaxy S wins hands down because of the hummingbird processor's gpu. You'll get 2x the frames as on the Desire.
This one is left up to personal preference
Form factors:
I think we can all admit that the Galaxy S looks... very iPhoneish. The Galaxy S is also the bigger device (taller and wider), however it is slightly thinner. You porbably won't notice the 2mm difference in thickness.
Also, the Galaxy S is missing a trackball/trackpad which could be a big influential factor in your decision. If you absolutely need a trackpad, go with the Desire.
Again, this is left up to personal preference
Development:
For now, the Desire wins hands down. Samsung is really marketing the Galaxy S hardcore so in the future, you may have equally good dev support for the Galaxy S, however for now, the Desire trumps the Galaxy in ROMs and customizability.

I'll agree!Although I already posted my opinion...
Anyway, what I did was go to a shop that has both available for testing and see for myself. The Desire met my needs.Plus I felt like the Galaxy S was like a fake as it was too light...But that's me!What you do is up to your judgement and your awareness of what is good!
Hm yh, maybe i'll just head to a shop and test em out... Galaxy S seems to be better looking, HTC seems to be better dev...
Of course
That´s the best solution!!!
Meanwhile here full comparative specs
Anyone else has an idea...?
I used to have a Polaris. And liked the customizability of HTC, but i don't know if i should go with latest hardware or better customizability....
GRR, one thing that makes me on my desire is that I really thought I'll be able to play cool 3d games, watch HD video, listen to great music through fancy music player and shoot cool photos and videos on it just after I get it. But this all is on Galaxy S and that makes me unhappy.
I must wait so long to get this all, that it just annoys me. If you want, you can get the Galaxy S. And I don't reccomend the desire, the samsung is someway better. A whole lot. Except the touchwiz...
I just came home from a shop with a 2hours old galaxy (was thinking of desire or galaxy, but desire seemed to be sold out everywhere I went so the choice was rather easy for me.) I won't try to tell you which phone to buy, I will just say some first impressions of the galaxy.
-------
there are a few things i've found that i dislike with the galaxy so far, no sense (had htc magic before and sense was great there, the samsung ui over android is a bit "boring" but does what it's supposed to).
Another thing is that the "pin" for hanging your phone from a string (ex. to have it around your neck) seems to be a little bit too fragile and doesnt "hook" onto the string like with other models (htc magic etc.) I won't risk dropping my phone.
The size of galaxy is a little bit to much for me but since its 10mm thick it still fits good inside pockets. (Also because of the low weight)
And of course as everybody knows it looks alot like iphone (Which i count as something negative)
++++++
And now to the fun part, hd-video on the frak'n great 4inch screen
Looks great and the playback is rather smooth (equal to mini-laptops a few months/year old). The brightness of the screen is amazing, can read messages etc clearly in the sun with sunglasses on, which was rather impossible with htc magic and diamond. This is a big + for me.
Another good thing is the speed in apps (ex. internet browser) which spanks my old htc magic and htc diamond back to the stoneages.
Havent tried out gaming yet though, so won't comment that (check benchmarks for different comparisons)
This test is great if you know swedish, otherwise there is a ****load of pretty pictures and comparison charts (benchmarks etc) to look at. (WWW).swedroid.se/samsung-galaxy-s
sorry i can't link it, can't create links when a "new" user.
Im kinda leaning towards the samsung as opposed to a desire. Although i dont think the resale value of samsung is so great. Ive had samsung fones for a while now and ive never really had a problem with them. However theres something about HTC that jus speaks like it was made for modifying. Tbh now im stuck between HD2, I9000 (Galaxy), or Desire. I guess to me it will really come down to the 3D Capability. At the moment Orb is trying to convince me to stick with windows mobile lets see how it goes if i dont stick with it (tbh WP7 doesnt look so amazing) then for me its all about specifications and the fact that the desire has an LED flash makes me ecstatic but the Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy is soooo freaking NICE its really down to preference. I feel the 3D processor speed is gonna really help me make my decision. Even if im not such a gamer on Mobile I still like having the ability to do those extra special things that other peoples fones cant do. EVEN IF its only rarely.
Maybe this will help you decide
http://www.gadgetvenue.com/samsung-galaxy-htc-desire-quake-2-07065608/
I think i may have found a winner despite not having an LED Flash
Yh i know about the gaming performance etc.
But wasn't the desire getting updated so it could make HD videos in a later release?
The problem imo with samsung is that it isn't as customizable as HTC devices. Just because there are so many cooks and hackers for HTC devices...
I don't even know if the Galaxy S will get the Android 2.2 update? Probably later than the Desire (i guess).
And why would you play games on a phone btw? (and how? bluetooth controller?). I have a netbook and a gaming-pc. So why should i play games, hmm. Ok, maybe i'll just try gaming a few times, when i'm really bored, but hmm...
It's still a hard decision, it's like: hardware vs customizability (+ quicker updates)
it wasnt the gaming i was highlighting but just its graphics capabilities in general. I pretty much have one attitude for these kind of decisions...
"I might not need the feature but glad it has it"
im always happy knowing that the phone wont become obsolete so quickly cos of its extra features
I doubt very much that I will actually play Quake on the phone but knowing the option is there to push the phones graphic ability to maybe dev a nice app or something is always nice. Also im a student so ... you know... gaming in class?

Samsung Captivate vs HTC Desire ... help me decide

Hey guys,
As the battery on my HTC Diamond is dying, I'm in the market for a new phone, and I am down to either htc Desire or Samsung Captivate ...
Why HTC Desire?
- Love HTC phones, my last 4 phones were all HTC's
- Love Sense, hate TouchWhiz
- Slightly smaller, so it would fit a little better in jeans pocket
- Availability of development and cooked ROMs
- Captivate seems to be somewhat buggy? With self shutdown problems, GPS can't lock and alarm won't pop up / go off ... little quirks.
Why Captivate?
- S-AMOLED screen is the best screen available now
- Hummingbird > Snapdragon
- 4.0" screen is better than 3.7"
- Have concern about Desire's battery life ... vastly disappointed with Diamond's battery though I know 1400mAh > 900, but many people still complain about Desire's battery life
- Captivate seems to be better at video playback, smoother, more vivid colour
- Captivate seems to be snappier with web browsing
What do you guys think? Anything else I should know about these phones?
Like I said, the biggest appeal of the Desire is Sense ... I think it's a great UI and I'm almost temped to pick the phone just for its UI. That said, I have concern about Desire's battery life. The Captivate's S-AMOLED screen is also something you fall in love with.
Any suggestion or advices is welcome!
Motorola Atrix.

what ever you do, if you want your phone to run the latest software, have a gps working, lagless UI, do not, I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG PHONE
get a desire or wait for the motorola atrix
If you do buy the Captivate, make sure you get the newest hardware build which is 1012 I believe?
Either way it has the gps, shutdown issues fixed.
I've never heard about the alarm issue.
I don't recommend samsung smartphones. worst manufacturer when it comes to upgrading latest android updates.

Thanks guys ... from the sound of it, despite superior hardware the Captivate is pretty buggy and there are plenty of small little quirks? (I don't call occasional self power-down as "small" quick neither)

Before you make a final decision, I suggest you ask this exact same question (if you havent already) on the HTC Desire forums and see what they say. Right now, many people on the captivate forums are frustrated with the lack of official updates, gps issues, shutdown issues, etc and will point out the negative aspects of this device. People who are frustrated tend to speak "louder" than people who are happy, its just human nature.
See what responses you get from the HTC Desire forums, research what people have been saying about it, go to the store and play with both, then make a decision.
I too am frustrated with the Captivate at times and even my girlfriends HTC Aria looks better and better.

But looks like the GPS and shutdown issues are fixed in newer captivates.
But wait for 2 months. Couple better phones are "currently" set to be released by end of first quarter.
Thanks! Yes, I do have a similar thread over at the Desire forum (nobody's posted to it yet ... either it means there's no serious issue or it's a phone people have kindda lost interest in? )
I do believe in general, htc phones are free of major problems. I'm on my 4th htc phone and I've been pretty happy with each of them ... except maybe the battery life.
It's just Galaxy S has a GREAT screen (I think it's the best screen available today, bar none) that I started considering it.
If you are planing on flashing roms I think the better hardware wins in the long run.
I agree I would check out the Moto forums sense some think the 1.2ghz Processor is worth moto putting in a locked bootloader so might be a long while till you see any roms for it if at all
I agree better hardware wins in the long run, and I do plan to flash with cooked ROMs ... that said, I do want a phone that's reasonably bug-free in the meantime. I don't know when Samsung can iron out its problems, and that also has an impact on cooked ROM's.
I think the new dual core processors are interesting, but my budget won't allow me to get one of the newest phones. I think given my budget, my best choices are the Desire and the Captivate.

To tell the truth the Desire HD is my next device unless HTC comes out with something before I get the cash together. When it comes to PPC I have learned that now that while hardware is great samsung just doesnt have the CS that I would like and Motorola tries everything they can to lock up the bootloader to prevent custom roms.
I am somewhat of a noob when it comes to flashing roms. I do work in IT though and love messing around with gadgets. I just want to say I love my captivate. The gps does take a while to lock, but once it locks it works fine. I have no shutdown issues. I'm running Perception 10.1 with the Firebird 2 kernel and it rocks. Videos do look crisp on this phone as well. I have no experience with the Desire, but I bought a refurb Captivate and I am very happy with it.

Isn't Nexus S already out since last November?
Love my Captivate
Well, i have the Captivate since October and I guess I have been one of the lucky ones because it works great for me. Shortly after I got the phone an update came out and fixed the GPS issue. I use it quite a lot and I have not rooted or updated the ROM a of yet. I have been waiting for Froyo as we all have but the phone does everything i want it to do and more.
I also came from the HTC world, my last phone was an HTC Fuze. I am so glad that I got this phone. Battery life is rather low but overall I just keep a charger around with me and in the car. My phone does a lot. I use it every other day as a GPS when I bike ride 5-10 miles a day. When in the car I stream music with either Pandora or Audiogalaxy. I send text and email messages regularly. Browse the Web and read my Kindle books as well as my Bible.
Just remember if you are going to use the phone a lot you are going to need to have the ability to charge it more often.
It is rather frustrating that AT&T has not released FROYO and that the battery life is not as good as some other phones but for me the pluses out way the minuses.
My brother owned an iPhone 4 an after seeing how my phone worked and looked he bought a Captivate for about $275. He was tired of the dropped calls and smaller screen and just overall functionality. He has been using the iPhone type phones for about 3 years. He has only had it for about 3 days and is loving it!!!
So whether you should buy the Captivate or not you really need to make the choice yourself. Every phone is going to have an issue one way or another. The question is can you live with those issues. Change is always hard and uncomfortable. But in the end you have to make that decision.
Someone suggested that you may want to hold off as the newer phones are on the horizon. That may not be a bad idea. In the end, remember, it is just a phone!!! Most of the heavy lifting is going to be done on your PC!!!
Good luck!!!
I'd say go captivate.
I have the i896 and the gps works perfectly, locks on in about ten seconds or less. I haven't had any problems with random shut downs or my alarm. As for the updates, as long as you are capable of rooting and installing custom roms you'll have 'updates' asap.
Regarding the screen it's absolutely no comparison; I'd say that's enough to buy the phone.
Again, there's no comparison between the hummingbird and the last gen snapdragon, especially with custom roms/kernals this phone demolishes the desire. Me and a friends have done some speed tests with my captivate with phoenix rom, and desire with a custom rom (can't remember the name, wasn't oc though) and in about every test we did the captivate was the winner.
My major complaint with this phone is the build quality, it feels kind of flimsy, especially compared to htc.

Opinions Needed. Sgs II or HTC Sensation?

I just wanted to get an opinion before i jump and get a new phone. I like both the galaxy s 2 and the htc sensation (now that it will be coming to Bell Mobility meaning AT&T HSPA Bands). I'm just want to know the positives and negatives of each device. I want honest opinions.
I'd pick the SGSII. I think it'll have better capabilities in the future when it comes to modding.

From my play time with a Sensation, there is no other choice. . It's that good. Sense 3.0 is just superb. And the build quality, style and design of the Sensation pushes it over the top. The SGS2 may be a nice phone, but it just can't even approach the Sensation...in my opinion.
Another great point.
I had the same problem choosing between these two phones. My previous HTC phones had superb build quality and I still think HTC makes incredible devices but after reading some reviews I decided on the Galaxy S II. The screen is undeniably amazing, and even though it has a slightly lower resolution it honestly doesn't matter, the display is that good. Its very fast, thin, and has surprisingly good build quality for a Samsung phone (no creaks at all, like my Desire Z). I haven't been able to slow it down yet, and that's a first for any android phone I have had or tried. At the time hearing about the locked bootloader on the Sensation defiantly made a difference for me coming from the **** that was the Atrix, but HTC has resolved this issue now (I think). As far as Sense 3.0 or TouchWiz 4.0 go I await the day CM7 nighties start releasing so I dont have to deal with stupid manufacturer "improvements" to android. You will have to make the decision yourself, but I can tell you for sure if you get the Galaxy S II you wont be disappointed.
HTC all the way. But I a HTC fan not

Have you seen the GS2's screen next to the sensation? Samsung is infinitely better.

I think Samsung Galaxy S II
SII - Brilliant screen and no doubt about that, very good performance and pretty good battery life too. GPS problems seems to be exist in this one too, but when is comes to performance, no compromises, always a better phone, unless you are hooked up to HTC Sense UI
HTC Sensation - super LCD lacks that brilliance that samsung AMOLED holds, but still read that pretty good battery life with idle state, and comfortably survive for 2 days. HTC Sense UI with latest changes does have some lag in the phone, so if you are looking at absolute performance, this might not be the phone.
I totally agree witg ajvasudhar.
The big problem is that Touchwiz is no where near the beauty of Sense UI.
...I wonder if (S*ns* porting to SII)...naaahhh...forget it...
HTC off caurse does not have concurrents. this is true
SGS II is better
Difficult choice, indeed, and I am standing in front of the exactly same dilema... I really dont like TouchWiz, and I really love HTC Sense... but I've read HTC Sense has some issues with smoothnes... I'd say its even here.
Display on SGSII is SAMOLED+, that would be +1 for me, however for 4.3inches, I am afraid that same resolution as on 3.7 inches amoled screen wont look that sharp. HTC on other hand has qHD resolution, but only S-LCD screen, which is not bad, but not as bright as Amoled(yea, I am very afraid of the 'gray' black on S-LCD). its still even fight on this point
Design of SGSII is weird, I dont like it, its like a brick, square, huge. On other hand, HTC came with very interresting design, I like the screen design, its very original. This round owns HTC.
Quality of materials, here again, just as with SGS I, SGSII has been made out of cheap looking plastics, and I dont like it. I have also heard that after two weeks of use, the back cover is making weird noise... on other hand, HTC has again aluminium unibody, where you put the phone into this body. GREAT... +1 for HTC.
Controls, I dont like the Samsung way of doing it, on/off button on side, three buttons, pretty far from each other... its my own opinion, I dont like it, but I guess I'd get used to that(but I still prefer unlocking phone from top) HTC has keys I am used to, but those are again sensors only, not real buttons.. I dont like this, so here its SGSII who takes point, where at least the home button is real +1
HW and performance, so far what I've seen benchmarks(I know its not perfectly accurate) and other stuff, SGSII is way better, it may be caused by SENSE, which is eating really a lot of performance, and may get improved by custom roms, but here I have to give points to SGSII, which has even more memory So far we have it 2:2 for each device
Now, I got into point, that no other things makes any difference for me... each phones have their own issues, SGS is loosing GPS signal, HTC is loosing WiFi and BT while not holding properly. I have also heard that first bunch of HTC's had issue with pocket lint/dust getting under the screen, however HTC is solving this responsibly and fixing the phones straight away.
So, if you ask me, for me its gonna be the one that goes cheaper... so far I can get Sensation for cca 220eur and SGSII for 300eur(both with 18months contract, which I'd take anyways), which makes HTC the winner, just because of the pricing.
Dont take this as a guide, this is bunch of my own opinions and preferences, why I chose HTC over Samsung, you might have different preferences, and performance could be far more important for you than look of the phone as for me, so still this is your choice... If you have chance, get into store and let them borrow you both working phones, put them next to each other and play with them for a moment, then you'll see which one is your champion
I read tons of reviews and comparison videos and went with the SGSII. The SGSII came out on top in most reviews. Loving mine!

htc sensation , samsung galaxy s2 picture quality

Hi,
I been looking at reviews videos comments etc over the space of the past month , and im having a hard time deciding what phone to grab. Im coming from htc desire so idealy id like to stay with htc and sense.
Anyhow ive been into a couple of shops over the past few weeks and comparing the features of both phones. One thing that struck my attention as well as my gf who was with me was when i was comparing photos via the gallerys and the pre loaded photos that come with both phones , the sensation compared to the galaxy seems to be slightly blurry and not as crisp with the image thats being displayed.
This really puzzles me as the sensation has a higher screen resolution so i would have thought the sensation should be the winner here. I tryed checking brightness on both devices to ensure they was equel , which they was.
Have i overlooked something here any views / feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I like the galaxy s2 it has a nice screen and is quite snappy however im no fan of touchwiz or the plastic back its just nasty.
I also like the sensation and luv sense + the android developement community so i would like to stick with htc however the more i read about it the more worryed i get ie touchscreen issues deathgrip , dual core not being used properly (im aware this should be sorted with ics).
But yeh back on point is there anything i may have missed on the sensation in regards to the picture quality / detail looking better on galaxy ??
The SGS2 has a better screen (for me it's the only thing it beats the Sensation on), however I can't comment on the quality of the photos it's camera takes.
I was playing around with getting my phone to stream media to my LCD TV last night and the photos taken at maximum size are crystal clear, the quality is awesome, you'd think they were taken with a decent DSLR.
Comparing the two phones to decide which one to go for, as you have already done, you need to really play with both, they are very close in performance so it comes down to personal preference.
I can't get on with android without Sense, and Sense 3 is lovely.
If you do however go for a Sensation and find Sense to be laggy, take it back and demand an exchange.
The more people who refuse to accept, or self resolve by installing a custom ROMs, phones that aren't working as well as they should the sooner the message will get up the supply chain and phones made laggy by iffy carrier ROMs and bloat should start to be a thing of the past.
For me the photo and video quality is much better then my step dads GS2
Much better actually..

I do not agree samsung s2 has much more detail in picture then sensation.
I own both sensation and s2 !
also video is better of samsung s2.
but hey sensation is certainly not bad!!
there is a camera mod for the sensation so that might be boost the camera performance up in detail , look here !
havent tried it myself yet.
sensation on the other hand feels better in yr hand .. only the glass of the s2 has a better touch ( better feel ) then sensation.
so decide yrself
could it be the SGS 2 screen that makes the picture quality better? Most of the reviews mentioned that SGS 2 has superb imaging quality. which i think is bull ****. htc build is definitely better and is nicer to hold imo. SGS2 is just a replica of iphone 4 with a 4.27 inch screen. Sense > touchwiz. though custom roms will solve a lot of problems but i once own a Samsung phone and after that i told my self. THATS IT!
seriously, its ur choice. go for the one which u prefer.
thank you for all the replys / feedback so far , i have to say its very much appreciated i gotta be honest i do prefer the look of the galaxy and it`s ui seems to work well , i just cant stand touchwiz
I really would like to get sensation as i prefer the sense overlay that being said im still not sure lolz , ill take a look and a read at the camera mod posted thank you hopefully i can make my mind up soon.
I gota say i will be routing the phone , and one thing thats clear to me is that the android development thread is a lot beter then the samsung one its just a mess with android developement (mostly themed roms) and original android development.
I think i need to play with both phones more as well never have i found it so tougth to decide which phone to upgrade to.
The SGS2's screen uses superior technology, but Samsung's software/driver for it causes the display quality to be, IMO, far inferior to the Sensation.
There are a few different display modes included that you can switch between, but when I tried mine out, I found that none of them resolved the main issue: Samsung is so anxious to show off the black levels that they severely increase the contrast, especially at the low end. This may just be how AMOLED looks, but it should be easily correctable with very basic calibration, something that's easily within Samsung's capability. My Cowon S9 had excellent color reproduction and it used a first-generation AMOLED display, so it's not impossible.
I also noticed some really nasty lag, ie, when scrolling through menus with a black background and gray text. AMOLED is supposed to have NO lag whatsoever, but this clearly isn't the case. Some of the newer Sensations also have this problem to be honest... but it's really surprising to see it on AMOLED of all things. Maybe it's because the black pixels are completely off and require a few milliseconds to power back on? Anyway, whatever it is, it's made a much greater issue due to the excessively high constrast/saturation settings which make anything of a luminance of roughly ~16 or below not just dark but actually completely black.
What really made my decision to stick with the Sensation was the qHD resolution. Unlike the qHD Motorolas, it uses a regular RGB pixel layout, so it's as sharp as a regular screen. It makes browsing the internet a much more enjoyable experience, almost like a laptop. It also seems to have more developer activity, which resolves the #1 problem, that Sense more often than not makes it slow as hell.
I was planning on waiting for the Nexus Prime, but I don't think anything's going to make me regret going with the Sensation any time soon. It's an awesome phone with great hardware. Soon it'll even have great hardware too, since a Cyanogenmod port is in progress.
Edit: I should mention I'm in Canada so my opinions are actually based on experience, not second-hand or from videos/reviews.

[Q] Upgrade to which phone?

Hey guys,
I really want to upgrade my phone. Currently I have a Desire S but the screen is far to small for my needs :/
So i want to upgrade. There are 3 phones were i'm interested in: the Galaxy S2, the Galaxy Nexus and the normal Sensation.
I really like the speed of the S2 and the hardware home button, but the resolution is incredible low on this device Against that there is the Nexus, its a bit slower from what i've heard but has a beautiful screen in my opinion. Did any of you guys know if the decrease in speed is noticeable in daily use? I really like that it is also supported directly from Google and get the updates asap.
There are also the Sensation because i like the aluminium case from HTC.
I prefer the Nexus and the S2 a bit over the Sensation. So which phone you recommend for me?
- Cheers Jahai

I'm sorry to tell you, but I think you are at the wrong place. Everyone here likes his desire s.
If you need a big screen, try galaxy note or use pc

I would advise you to wait for the Mobile World Congress before upgrading... you'll have many more options within a couple of months...
But if you still want to upgrade now, here's my input :
1. Sensation : ? Why would you want to consider that? It's an average phone, and from whatever time i've spent on it on my friend's phone, it's nothing to write hone about. Does anyone even remember the original Sensation anymore (Especially after the XL and the XE?)
2. The SGS2 is a very very fast phone, with great hardware, but i have two issues with it : The screen has a bluish tinge to it, and colour reproduction is inaccurate across the spectrum. Secondly, it looks like a plastic business card holder
3. The Galaxy Nexus is a lovely looking device, the form factor is very attractive. In my discussions with zeekiz (who bricked his DS and migrated to the GN) he says he loves the phone and it's not slow or anything like you mentioned. Plus, you'll be the first person to get the next Android version update (Jellybean). Thirdly, it always makes sense to go for the newer device, both for the gains in hardware, as well as company support that comes more easily and lasts longer for newer (especially) flagship phones.
Best of luck choosing your next device!!

Just a small note here, with my experiance the 3.7' of the Desire S is the largest screen size for a mobile that I can -almost- fully use with one hand, whenever you go beyond that, you may have to get used to work with both hands, and that made me drop the sensation in favor of my DS
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
I came from a HTC Sensation to the Desire S as i found the Sensation too big. Surprisingly i have found the Desire S not much slower.
I would also wait for the MWC...but if you can't wait, IMHO Sensation is a good device especially after it's rooted and equipped with the custom ICS based roms made for the XE version (with CPU at 1.5 Ghz)...i think capy's work.
Anyway you have a lot of roms to try even with ICS out there.
Regarding the SGSII it's ok if you want a plastic phone....
Galaxy Nexus has a good screen and it's not slow but i think it's a little big, you will clearly need 2 hands if you want to use it properly.

Right on! Exactly my thoughts about the SGS2. It feels like a business card holder!
Wait for mwc and HTC edge if price isn't the big deal
Otherwise, i personaly would buy a sensation, the gs2 is sure a nice device, but like mentioned above the screen isn't the best and the plastic body feels weird.
The galaxy nexus isn't a device for me, there are 2 dealbreakers at my opinion, even if the resolution is better than at the gs2 the grapic chip is wors and there is no sd slot.
The update cycle is sure a point and the nfc also, but for my opinion it's a pure developer phone.
The sensation is from hardware almost the same like the sensation xe and every rom can be exchanged between those 2 devices, there is no nfc, for sure, but the gs2 also haven't got one, so this isn't a point of interest for you i think.
Also even if all of them have them same frequenzies the sensation runs at a stock speed of 1.5 ghz with an xe rom, so it got the highest frequency of those phones.
Swifted from my Desire S far away from my PC
yeah i'd wait for MWC but if not galaxy nexus for all the reasons above. It is definitely not a slow phone, especially since google probably built ICS for the nexus. The only thing i hate about the nexus phones is the fact that they're always released at awkward times. By awkward, i mean right before all the new hardware comes out. My brother has an S2 and it does have a horrible plasticky feeling. While the galaxy nexus is the same, it seems to hide it better. The white S2 is even worse! It has no grip on the back which makes it absolutely horrible to hold, not to mention a liability too.
It's been a while since I did a megga-post.....
From what I'm hearing about HTC's line-up for MWC, I hope they also announce a sensible phone. At the moment I really don't know what I'll get, as the current rumours all seem to have several problems for me.
1. Screens too big.
I have a non-upgradable 2.5" thumb. I've spoken to my network provider but they wont give me a larger one. I do not want to have to change grip or use two hands to turn screen on/off. The DS screen size is perfect. It is fine watching films on Netflix.
2. Quad core. Really?
Does anyone remember the Coca-Cola/Sprite stunt yo-yo's from the eighties? (Bear with me here, work is a little slow today and I feel a rant coming on.) They were a massive craze when I was at school. They came in two versions. "Standard" and "Pro". The Pro ones cost nearly twice as much. Why was that? It was because the Pro version had "Pro" written on the side. That was it. They were the same size and weight as the standard version. But every kid in my class practically sold a kidney to get the pro version, because to show up in the playground with the standard version stood you out for ridicule, and everyone was certain the Pro version could do better stunts. What is quad core going to give us? How often is it going to be running on more than 2 cores? Can it do better stunts? My single core phone can render web pages quickly, run any game I've asked it to, record 720p video at 30fps, and has a smooth and lag free UI. It just doesn't have "Pro" written all over it. That word seems to brain-wash kids into doling out dosh! Kids love the idea of being "Pro". Look at what every premium version of any app on the Android Marketplace is called.
3. Skinny form-factors
Leading to phones being bendy and having a non-removable battery. I like my solid aluminium DS. I've held the SGS2. It feels like a kinder surpise egg. Squeeze it too hard and I worry it'd break. Plus if we are having to have a (pro) Quad Core phone don't we need a bigger battery? Did you know the HTC Edge has a fifth core (super pro) that is a very low power companion core for when the phone is off in your pocket? Turn your phone on (without dropping it changing your grip to reach the button) and expect laptop battery life from the 40nm chip. Will it come with a Pro Charger?
4. No SD Card slot.
OK most of the phones with these also claim built-in 32GB storage which is fine for capacity, but what if I brick my phone larking about on XDA? What if it just packs in? Currently all my music/photos/documents would simply be removed and put into another phone. If it's built-in and your phone wont boot.....Are the cloud-storage sites encouraging phone manufacturers to do this?
5. Build Quality.
HTC seem to have really dropped the ball with this one. They used to be fantastic. However I know 3 people who have bought the DS since September (on my recommendation) and all of them have been back for repair at least once. One of them died for the second time two nights ago with the dreaded eMMC chip failure again! WTF? Did they replace the faulty board with another one prone with the same weakness? She also waited 6 weeks to get that phone back the first time. I feel guilty now. Also check Amazon for the reviews of the DS. Since September it's started getting a load of 1 star reviews and they all read the same. It seems I was lucky in buying my DS on it's release, before it seems HTC moved production to the local wine bar/crack house. There is no way I'm spending £450 on something I'm not confident will last a year or will take me 6 weeks to get repaired.
If HTC...no if ANYONE announce a phone that has: A screen under 4", solid build, removable battery, SD card slot, improved camera optics, decent amount of RAM, reasonable battery life and justifiable processing power, then I'll get my wallet out. Or if it comes with a free Pro Yo-Yo. They do better stunts.
Basically I want a DS with a nicer camera and bigger battery. And a sticker that says "Pro" on it.

Brilliant!
Love the rant (and i thought i was the only one with this illness)
I agree on mostly everything you've said above... especially HTC screwing up on its strengths... build quality, sub-par components, and progressively bloat-ier (i know that's not a word) Sense... Though i'd still buy an HTC instead of a Samsung, all things set aside, they do better stunts!!
Yeah. Your words seem to come right from my mind.
a desire s pro would be really cool

If i had the choice, i'd choose the sensation in a heartbeat.
First, it has the beat build IMO. The SGS 2 is too plasticky and since it's far too thin, it feels weird in my hand. The galaxy nexus is waaaaaay to big. The sensation is perfect
Second, HTC Sense. It is just too good and i can't get a device that has no chance of getting Sense. Besides, touchwiz sucks and the stock experience on the nexus can be acieved through an AOSP ROM.
That said, the super amoled screen is quiet good ad a plus point of both sammys.
That said, i recommend you wait till MWC. Something awesome will surely come up. There is a thread, full of leaks on the two upcoming htc devices, the One X and the One S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476788
it has to be the htc amaze, i think its a great phone, in addition to that htc has quality in its build, as in our desire s the aluminum feel is way better than the plastic in most samsungs
