[Q] How to prevent booting upon plugging charger? - Motorola Milestone Android Development

There's one thing currently annoying me.
some times, I would like to charge the phone while it's switched-off. All my previous phones can do it easily. just power-off and plug-in.
but this XT720 is totally driving me crazy by fully booting up whenever I plug-in the charger, (or sometimes, simply remove and re-insert the battery).
Does anyone know how to prevent it?

I have this problem with my Milestone, too. The only workaround I know is plugging-in the charger and then turn it off...

[Q] power down bug?

hey guys.
i just want to know if you guys can replicate a problem i found and see if the problem i have is isolated or not.
so i've been charging my phone today and noticed that when i try and power down the phone while it is charging, the phone hangs at the shutdown circle and freezes.
when i unplug the charger (wall charger), then the phone immediately turns off.
at first i thought it was because of low battery ( i ran the phone until it died).
then i thought it was because i had no wireless connection (was in building-no signal).
when there was enough juice, i shut down the phone (not charging this time) and the phone powers down.
if this has been already covered, i apologize...
sorry for the bad grammar/punctuations. im feeling lazy. lol

defective NS?
My phone powers down while plugged in just fine. I just checked for you.
It takes about 30 seconds of the spinning shutting down message, then the screen switches to the battery charge icon for a few seconds, then the screen goes black.
A quick press (don't hold) of the power button brings back the battery charge icon for another 10 seconds or so.
Thanks for the reply. What is weird is that I tried the test at my local best and their demo phone was exhibiting the same thing. Maybe I'm not letting it shut down long enough.
okay, i've powered down again while charging. stuck on power down screen.
been over 2 min.
looks like i'm replacing this today.
anyone else want to chime in on this?

Since you're going to have to do a factory wipe/reset for privacy/security to exchange the phone anyways, can I suggest that before you assume the phone is bad that you perform a factory reset on it and then test again?
For all we know, you've got some rogue app that is causing the problem. I'd hate to see the NS returned as bad hardware when it might possibly just be bad software you've installed...

exactly what i plan on doing. gonna do a factory reset first.
But i think it will still happen because the demo unit at bestbuy was a clean install with no apps on there.
But i will update as soon as i restore!
thanks distorted!
wanted to add that when i shut down the phone while it was usb connected to the comp, it shut down properly and i saw your battery icon you were mentioning.
edit:
now i tried other wall plugs, usb cords and such and it all shuts down.
very weird.
It looks like it was the micro usb charger that i was using that was the problem.
I was using one that came with my blutooth charger.
I double checked all the information of the BT plug and compared with the ones that worked. the bluetooth cable was rated a .7 amps (just like the one that came with the nexus s). other cables were rated at 1 amp (which shut down the phone fine).
oi! saved me the trip to best buy.
i tested before and after factory reset.
all good except for the BT charger.
I can confirm that this is an issue. I have a spare micro-usb cable, and when I connect that to the computer, it charges fine, but the usb-debugging or usb-drive options never appear.
While it's in this state, and I go to shut down, the Power off - Shutting Down... screen will in fact freeze until the USB cable is unplugged. It does not do this with the stock usb cable.
When this "bad" cable is used with the stock wall charger, the same thing happens.
Hmmm... I wonder what can be causing this. Anyone else have this happening?
My best guess is that maybe there's something different with the pins and they are shorting/not aligned right in some cables.

Phone Freezes While Charging

I had my phone freeze when charging, the screen would be of, when i would hit the power button the phone would not wake up, I would have to take the battery out to turn it back on, Any one else experiencing this? Its happen 3x to me already
I guess i am one of the lucky people i have yet to have any problems other then alittle bit of lcd bleeding. My phone is running great. I would tell you to keep an eye one it. If you bring it into a store will they need exchange it for u unless the problem is going on right the store. It could also just be something with android as well.
Probably bad grounding circuitry in the charger or phone.

I have had it happen twice, and once I found my phone stuck in boot loop forcing me to do a hard reset.
Just happened to me. Never happened to my G1 while charging in the same place
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Its happened a total of 8 times for me (My 3rd day with the phone). First time I was late to work because the alarm didn't go off.
Always when I charge via a wall charger. Have tried the LG charger with LG usb cable, oem usb cable, blackberry charger. They all freeze my phone. I've noticed that every time it happens, my phone gets real hot, often times when i get a text in while its plugged in it freezes. The only way I can charge the phone without it freezing was through a usb port on my computer. Don't know if its an issue with the charger or the phone, but this is annoying
O and I've looked at the LG O2X forums too, it seems like they are having the same issues too, freezes and bleeds
It's happening to my "replacement" g2x. I have to pull out the battery to get it working again.

Could be a combined hardware/software problem with battery charging, which also explains the poor battery life many experience.
When charging via wall adapter I wouldnt doubt if it is going into thermal shutdown and the battery is getting too hot, pushing too many amps too quickly....usb connected to your computer fixes that issue since it cannot push that much current.
Sounding more and more like LG did something bad here.
I have never had this happen.
I use the included charger, a nook charger, and the charger for the HD7.
All have worked perfectly fine. I would definitely keep an eye on your heat.
I've had at least six reboots and a few of the black screen shutdowns where the battery has to be pulled.

Yea I think it really is heat related. Using battery monitor widget, I found that the last few times my phone froze up while charging, the temp was hovering above 35 celsius, seen it hit 39.8

Those temps aren't bad. I have seen up to 45c while charging and using wifi tether and I haven't got a force reset.

I had this exact issue; plugged in, got a text and it froze, requiring a battery pull. I also noticed it got really hot. Interestingly, I had received a bunch of texts prior just fine while plugged in. The last text I received was repeated three or four times and then I got a notification about what appears to be the SMS app hanging (I forget the exact package name but I know it had SMS or MMS in it).
I have had my g2x for about 3 days and this problem has occurred on mine about 3 times so far.
The first time it happened i pressed power button several times, also tried holding it down. After about a min of messing with it. i actually got the screen to light up with the lock screen by holding down power button and up volume. but once i let go of buttons screen blanked out again. i was unable to reproduce it again. so i pulled the battery.
Having the same issue here. I'm on my second G2x (exchanged the first one because of lcd bleeding). Had the phone for 2 days, and I've had 2 freezes with blank screen and one reboot while charging thus far.
Interestingly, both times I encountered the phone freeze with blank screen were when I've completely discharged the battery and the phone was off when I plugged in the charger. After I plugged in the charger, i turned on the phone, and about 20-30 minutes later, i'd get the blank screen phone freeze.
The other time my phone rebooted while charging was when I plugged in the charger with the phone at around 75% battery.
I think it's because of crappy charger or cable. I don't have difficalities at home with the original ones but in the office the touchscreen of my Motorolla Photon freezes.
Its the kernel. My Transformer will do the same thing on certain kernels. I haven't had it once while on MIUI and Faux, and I went through 2 phones.

Phone gets hot and discharges battery power when plugged to USB

I've had my Sensation 4G for a while. Recently, I've encountered an occasional, and somewhat alarming, problem when my phone is plugged into the USB port of my laptop. It begins to discharge power very quickly and become very hot (~118+ Fahrenheit). When this problem occurs, the phone becomes so hot that the safety feature of the phone kicks in and stops the flow of power from the computer. I would then have to use the AC adapter to charge my phone. This issue has occurred about 3 times already, so I know it wasn't a fluke occurrence.
Could the current be too unstable for my phone to be plugged into my computer? I have my laptop connected to a power strip that is also shared with my 40-watt sound system and 70-watt fluorescent lamp, though they aren't necessarily used all at once. Or could this be a battery issue? Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks.
Hello,
I've heard of this problem before, not only phones connected to USB but also to the regular charger. Some phones seem to get to a temperature where the housing and/or the sim gets soft. I work at a store of one of the bigger providers in The Netherlands, and if we get a customer with this problem we have to send it back for repairs! Currently we're not aware of the source of this problem, if anyone knows, please share!!
For now my advise is, return the phone
Do you use any taskmanager??? if so DONT!!!
and lose alle batery savers apps to.
if you have root acces boot to recovery and wipe batt states when batt is at 100%

[Q] ICS Battery Alert

Since performing the ICS ota, I have been getting random alert where a large (2" x 1") battery icon displays in the middle of my screen for about two seconds. It emits a tone, then disappears.
Has anyone seen this?
Does anyone know how to disable this?
I've been getting the charging battery pop up when docking and plugging in the charger, but so far thats the only thing to cause it, its just a charging notification I think
I do not have a dock. This is driving me crazy. There doesn't seem to be any logic to it happening.
Its probably just a battery reminder, like when it gets to a certain level it reminds you so you can plan ahead if your away from a charger. I don't know this for sure but that would make sense! I don't see any option to turn it off, maybe in a future update or custom rom!
Sent from my Rogers i896 running Miui V4 Port or CM9!
Picture of alert
Here is the alert that I get. Completely random. Doesn't matter what app, battery level, etc.
Has anyone else seen this? HELP!
That icon appears when you plug the tablet in to the charger, it lets you know the battery level and it plays a chime. If it's not a software fault, might be something with the charging port. Maybe it's defective and it's detecting a charger plug that's not actually there?
Thanks. I think it has to be software related. It happens without anything plugged in. Frustrating! It also never happened on honeycomb.
battery icon screen
I see the same thing when I plug in to charge.I have it plugged into the wall first then plug into transformer.I think it is just letting you know it is charging because I don't have it powered down.

The problem is that I do not have the charger plugged in when it happens.
charger icon
do you see it when plugging it in to docking station? my does for a sec when i link the keyboard to the tablet but go away ..because the docking station starts charging the tablet.
I can confirm I also get this. It really is annoying and random. I'm yet to find a pattern to it.
The tablet is not on charge. It is not docked. Just the tablet.
Current battery level is 73% and the battery icon has flashed twice whilst writing this. There are different icons signifying different battery levels. Full, mostly full, nearly empty and running low... I've seen them all.
Does anyone know of a setting that would stop these alerts?

Only works on charger?

Ok, this is a weird one. I have searched everywhere to find out what this is but I have not found anything. A lot of problems are similar, but nothing fixes the issues.
Issue is this. I turn my phone on and it goes all the way through the boot sequence, and turns off when it gets to the lock screen. I formatted the phone, and I get all the way to the setup screen. When I touch the screen, it turns off. I connect the charger to the phone and turn it on. We are fine here. I use the phone and do anything I want. As soon as I disconnect the charger, it turns off.
Just noticed this as well. My menu and back buttons don't work. I don't know if I disconnected something when I looked at the board, but it may be a symptom.
Any ideas here? I am thinking the battery, but I don't know why it would do that when the battery is charged to 80% and holds the charge.

Had the same issue recently.... The battery needs to be replaced. The battery I had went bad and the only way it would even work is to be constantly plugged into a charger, dc current not ac from a battery like a car.
I killed the battery not on purpose but learned a huge lesson from utilizing fast charge from a custom kernel constantly
