I wanted to ask a simple question do we know if the NBH updates are signed or not?
I am working on a hybrid to get root back on RC30s phones.
Please if anybody knows the answer to this.
(I have something done already but dont have any stock rc30s to test with.
The file changes are good and the nbh works as modified however it works on an engeniring bootloader because it doesn't check signatures. humbug

From what it sounds like they are signed, by htc themselves. But I have a stock rc30 and I'll try it.
Freaking rapidshare is slow uploading now.

I would be happy to test. I have a couple of stock rc30s that can be used.

so question to you....if we know where the signature is, would there be a way to apply the signature to an NBH that we create? if creating one is possible.
Sure, you can change the signature, but how are you going to generate it? Do you have the keys from HTC? If not, might as well give up now

Don't think you quite understand how signatures are created. You can't just toss a signature off one Android version on to another.
Damn I see the signature!!
A mute point then here is the file anyways.

i do understand that, just some tiny bit of hope...i know that signatures are based on filesize and name and content and all that.....
What about swapping sd cards when the signature is read?
Just an idea.
It seems the bloody bootloader dumps the files straight into RAM before it flashes them making the sd swap impossible or at least difficult. It seems the next step is jtag, but this will not be within the realm of the average user or even advanced user.
Freaking T-mobile and HTC, I really hate their signing crap. They should have at least made the bootloader not read freaking signature hashes.
Im still looking at the file itself to see if their can be any exploits. The bootloader is closed source so there is no way to know easily when the check is actually done, or the update process itself handled

Let's try to keep the heated opinions to a minimum. Google has already clearly stated that locked root is working as intended for the G1 as per HTC and T-Mo's specifications. This forum is for discussing active development issues, not debating the merits of Android implementation on Dream.
My friend trust me I AM actively working towards development on this device. I don't however need a father lecture on it (especially on a silly comment). I understand T-mobiles and Googles position and respect it. I understand how you feel and it would be well warranted if you were talking with a newbie that does nothing towards xda-developers goals, i however Im not.
If I decide to vent lightly then that is my prerogative, i am not debating anything here simply a frustrated rant since ive been working all day of and on, on this.

Stupid T-Mobile.

Thank you for taking things lightly and having fun!
I believe jashsu posted a diagram or pic showing the disassembled view of the device and possible points of attack. I don't think either of you meant any harm in your posts but text doesn't quite relay emotion properly. Great work by you both and please keep posting in these forums as I look forward to both of your contributions and appreciate what you've already done.

are you good at ARM assembly (or any other cpu assembly is fine, once you know one, you know all ) and do you have a good understanding of how overflow etc exploits works - if yes, PM me it would be nice to work together.
There are so many roms around there an one thing I cannot find is at a fundamental level,(user level) what do we gain out of using the hero rom rather than the regular g1 OS?
Is there a killer app that only works on hero? is the hero interface, better? majorly different? would like to know, please?
Could you really not find it, or did you not look? This isn't even remotely close to being in the correct section either..
To sum it up however, HTC's "Sense UI" that is implemented on HERO is essentially a home replacement (like openhome, ahome, etc...). It features many graphical enhancements as well as widgets that are not available on the stock android builds.
This link will tell you everything you need to know:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/epic fail/scooters61/EpicFail.jpg
Its mostly cosmetic. Everything in HERO looks better than standard ota 1.5 android. I weighed the options of running HERO ROM or Cyanogen and HERO came out on top. I just love the way HERO looks. I love it so much, that I gave up use of my blue tooth headset.
.....the only thing I can suggest is to do some research on a "proper" installation of a HERO ROM and experience it for yourself.
toxtrepla:
to the first point, yes I looked, there is no site, thread that just has that simple explanation. I'm sure it's there, it's just buried.
Point 2. yeah, your right. my thinking was this is a forum full of hero and non-hero roms, so it would be good here, but really, I could have put it elsewhere. Thank you very much for the info.

Thanks for the pic.

Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out. as soon as I get time to clean out my sdcard.
thanks all again.
If it were only the eye candy.... What sets Hero apart is the way it integrates your social network in one place. Right now there's support for Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Plurk, Picassa, Google, and your Exchange contacts. All of those can be merged, so say, if your friend Sally from work ([email protected]) has a twitter and facebook account, you can exchange tweets quickly and the phone will notify you they're from Sally. Also, you're out and trying to decide which pair of shoes you should get for Saturday night's ball, and you can't decide, you snap a quick picture, uploaded to your facebook (right from the camera app) and then tweet Sally to help you choose, be quick, though, your wife's almost back
@rkimbal45
What the first guy meant was you didn't look to see they have a Q&A section for what you asked, which was a question... From my point of view you have no investigative skills which led you to asking this question and not being able to find the proper place to ask it.... but hey who really post their questions in the Q&A now-a-dayz?

Here are some upcoming home replacements for Android. One name that should be familiar to us old WinMo users and a "newcomer."
http://www.tat.se/home/
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pre...gs-support-for-symbian-and-android-along.html
they both look pretty cool but I think tathome looks like it might be a little more to my liking.
SPB isnt out yet, is tathome available yet, i didnt see a download.
+1 for TAT home it looks like it could be NICE I checked out the video (good music and all ;-)) here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/tat-home-the-gesture-powered-3d-home-screen-your-android-device/
I used SPB Mobile Shell 3.x with my Touch Pro and I wasn't too impressed.
*** EDIT ***
Here is a video of Mobile Shell http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/mwc-video-spb-mobile-shell-50-on-android IMO Mobile Shell is suffering from what it always has LAG!!!!! Even on the N1 it looked slow, maybe because it's BETA.

Hrm, TatHome looks like what I envisioned Android 'should be' , I'm liking the look it quite a bit!! Next: to find out whether it really runs that smoothly on my Hero. 3d and graphics are great, but if it slows my phone down in the slightest its automatically going to get turned off.

muahaha, smooth as an iph*ne, and yet still kicking the pants off of it in terms of functionality = complete win for Android.

Yes there are a lot of different spec'd Android phones out there but I think he is referencing the fact that Android apps are easier to "warez" than the apps on other OS's. All you have to do is sign up for the paid app extract the .apk post it somewhere. Also any dev can try to "reverse engineer" the app, change a few components and BAM it's on the Market as their "original" creation. Just my .2 cents

that is correct. when swype was first leaked I was actually talking to them about the bennifits of releasing it through the market instead of through manufacturers and one of the biggest concerns that was brought up was the fact that security for apps is too lax. now dont get me wrong everyone knows that for every security mesure there is always a way around it but android security just sucks thats why for the most part people afften have a free version and a donate version. if people can try it and like it then they are more likely to buy it rather than just pirate it. setcpu is a perfect example of this. sure the dev could have made it a protected app (but being a member here at xda he probably knew it was pointless) but he offers it free here and then if you like you can buy from the market to donate to help keep him developing.
so basically all im saying is...ok we all (me included) have pirated apps but if you like the app make sure to go buy it from the market and help keep these people developing for us.
I know I went off on a rant there but without intrest in app development this great platform will fail.
I might be the only here without pirated apps then haha. I did have CoPilot once, but I didn't like it much so I got rid of it. The only time I ever use something pirated is to try it. If I like it and feel the developer should get credit, then fine, I'll donate/buy it.

same here the only thing I am using pirated right now is swype but thats only becuase there is no way to buy it. but thats also because im a cheap ass and maily use free apps unless I really find something useful but to date the only things that I have bought are setcpu and beautiful widgets. im trying cachemate now but it really doesnt seem to be very helpful. I wish I knew a little more about programing there is an app for the iphone that I would love to have on my hero.
i played around with "pandahome" some yesterday. it seems beta right now but they are apparently coming out with pandahome2 soon. it's a good idea, just not quite finished yet. (fc's and whatnot)
anyway you might go check it out (if your feeling froggy).

Yeah; the 'problem' you guys are complaining about is HTC software. This has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft. As to HTC 'stepping up and taking responsibility', they created their software to work a certain way. There may even be a reason for it. The iPhone always has crappy wallpapers because its hardware is limited to a 400*320 resolution (if I remember correctly), but no one complains about that because ... well, because most people just can't tell the difference. Not XDA users of course. That's why we are all on here, right?
But anyway, my point is that just because something doesn't work the way you want it to doesn't mean it's broken and that someone should take responsibility for fixing it. It means it doesn't work the way you want it to, and that's what's so great about this community - there are a ton of developers that want things to work differently, and so they work on it - often times for free - without having to delay the release of a phone or otherwise impacting a business' success. There is more to running a successful business than just producing 'perfect' products (again, look at Apple as an example of that).
The sad nature of a market that moves so quickly is that every generation is a little bit better than the one before, and if you are going to live on the bleeding edge you are just going to have to deal with things not always working exactly the way you want them to.

T-mobile has confirmed that this software ships with the 4G slide:
http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/12505?tstart=0&noredirect=true
Please go complain about this on that thread or directly to t-mobile, even if you're rooted and running a custom ROM. It's something that shouldn't be foisted on the 99% of normobs out there, and if people speak out about this it can only increase the chances of t-mobile doing something about it.

That's the link to the security patch put together by Undeadk9. It's over in Dev.
When these issues were first released, we all handled it immediately and he made a patch to make it easier to do it.
If you haven't flashed it or are on a ROM that hasn't dealt with these issues, look into it.
The link to the androidpolice article is in Undeadk9's thread.

The answer, unfortunately, is "that depends".
Keystrokes *are* being caught and logged, that's clear. It doesn't appear that they're being permanently stored or transmitted, but that doesn't matter. Malicious software could potentially read those keystrokes and do whatever with them.

You'll need to remove the SWM-C stuff.
That's the redbend sofware managemet client, which T-Mobile includes. That software gives T-Mobile the ability to install, remove, or modify any software installed on your phone without your knowledge or permission.
EDIT: Actually, it'd be great if ROMs could be titled with [NOSWM], so we'd know. Just a thought.
The Rubix Cubed ROMs have all been "fixed" now to prevent this invasion of privacy. Since we aren't allowed to post about other forums on here all I can say is to Google RubiX CubeD ROM and you'll see your 3 options.
**mods i.e. arrrghhh**
As you can see I haven't posted any direct links or referenced any other particular forums to acquire these said roms so I am not violating what you referred to as "uncredited" work and a "d!ck" move as quoted from your PM to me this morning below .....Google is everyone's friend and it's pretty common knowledge anything can be found on there!

So, I'm guessing if we freeze the SWM-C stuff, we should be safe? Is there anything else that's questionable and should be frozen?
I'm no expert. I have a rooted but stock MT4GS. I downloaded an app from the marketplace that is supposed to find if you have the software on your phone.
According to the software, I don't have the "infection".
I searched the marketplace for "carrier iq" and found a few detectors. I used one from Lookout, the people that make remote lock and wipe software. I also downloaded one from Bitdefender and got the same negative answer.
TMO News had a post with a list of offending phones and ours was not on there.
My guess is that it is not on our phones.
Our phone doesn't come with carrier iq thankfully. TrevE has an app that checks and removes it.
We do however have swm-c and htc loggers. Both can be removed. I know undeads roms have both removed.
I checked for both already.
