Root has been achieved - Epic 4G Android Development

Can't post a link (stupid noobie rules), but we have an Advocate who used the Android root exploit and confirmed that his Epic is now successfully rooted! The thread's on sdx-developers(dot)com in the epic thread.
It was a collaborative effort between the developer, xda and sdx.

Here is the link:

Hip hip hurray! Hip hip hurray! Hip hip hurray!

Me too!! I was debating on if I was making a mistake or not...now we just need some good chefs...Calkulin, are you getting an Epic??

kernels are at sdx

This is a confirmed full root??
REALLY wish Amon-Ra would make his recovery image for the Epic, but isn't ClockworkMod recovery working on the Galaxy series?

So far you basically have to root the phone everytime you restart it. They're working on a permanent root right now

Supposedly the japanese version also had its own custom recovery but they were able to just flash the recovery from the international model and then root it by the original galaxy s unlock method.

FYI, that's the "old" method that does NOT have S-OFF and you CANNOT load a custom recovery.
What is posted in the OP is apparently new and just done late last night. It allows S-OFF and loading of custom recoveries. That's different than what is posted in your link.
Not really sure what is happening at the moment....

Ha ha. No worries, everyone is excited about this. Just trying to keep people from getting confused!
What we know:
1) Originally, on March 18, they had a "dirty" perm-root method that required loading an old version of the software. This gave root, but no S-OFF and no way to load a custom recovery. There are instructions posted for this method.
2) Late last night, they managed to find a "new" root method and gives S-OFF and allows loading a custom recovery. This news is posted in the link in the OP of this thread. At this time, they have not yet posted the method for doing this. I expect we'll see it later today when they wake up. LOL
So patience guys and gals, we'll have FULL root, S-OFF, and custom recovery of our TBs very soon!

Anything that is faster than the ****ing root time on the Incredible is fine by me. That was a painful thing to wait for.
I have been following the developement on the andirc channel. these guys are amazing! As long as HTC's software policies remain what they are today, I will no longer be purchasing moto phones. I had to suffer through the DX's bootloader fiasco after coming from the OG D1. DX devs made it bearable, but custom kernals...no. Thanks for all the work jcase and company!
I'm a relative newb as far as hacking and even I got root + S-OFF + unlocked eMMC + Clockwork, etc working as per the rooting instructions updated today on AndroidPolice. It has been done and these guys and gals are that much more amazing for it.
The only question is: how the hell do you select an option in Clockwork recovery? On my Droid I could use the camera button, but here the Power, Home, and Menu button all just hide the menu. Vol keys only scroll. /confused
I haven't actually rooted mine yet as I'm a wuss and waiting for a one-click, but I read tonight that Kousch (sp?) already made an updated CWM to fix that issue on the TB. Maybe try updating via ROM Manager?

I'm right there with you, I rooted my D1 back before any of the oneclick solutions existed using the Motorola flashing software. I extremely tempted to try installing abd on my Linux machine and give it a shot but I'm a little scared too having never used adb before. And it seems that there's still. A few bugs to work out so I will let them get those straight. I'm hoping too one click root by Tuesday and ROM by months end. Hopefully on CM7.x
Also hi everyone! Been lurking here since I picked up the thunderbolt Thursday morning. Can't wait to crack this thing open. SenseUI is driving me nuts.
Rooted and removed bloat from my TB! I love it!
Hello Board Members. I just signed up today as I picked up my TB yesterday. I'm a former iPhone user (since 2009) and then went to Verizon for a Droid X. This new phone came out, so we dropped the X and went for the TB. Just my short intro to the Android world.
Anywho, for those that rooted the TB, was it a painless process? And the instructions posted on the AndroidPolice post (saw it in Google), do I run all of this from the TB or on the computer?

Looking for testers

I notice theres no custom roms yet or anything. I'm not a skilled dev or anything but right now im throwing together a deodexed stock rom, as well as a 1% battery mod.
I don't have a sidekick (my girlfriend does) so I cannot test it. Anyone willing to be my guinea pig?
I partially used a script with my deodexing since i dont have much time today so there might be a few FC's on some apps.
Maybe once I get more familiar with kernels and stuff i'll try and make a fully custom rom/kernel. I need a hobby anyways .
Or should I just post it up in the dev forum with giant red warning letters?
"Why are you here if you don't have a sidekick?" I have an epic4g and Learned a bit about android dev from there. The devs there are great and have the job covered. This is a new phone and and empty forum, figured i'd try and start off here and maybe my girl will let me put a rom i made on her phone :3
EDIT: PM me or post for a download link
I'm willing to test

Boot into Recovery

Samsung just posted the manual for the Infuse 4G, after a little reading I found that to enter into recovery, hold down both volume buttons and press the power button. Release the power button when the samsung screen pops up and bingo, you're in. MC
Good info, thank you!
Good tip, thanks!
Thank you. Previous articles I saw said just hold down the - volume and would never work. I thought Samsung was trying to block something out.
Thanks.

Does Rom Manager support this phone yet? let me check...hm...well... it installs ok but no clockwork listed for Infuse yet ,.
So does anyone else notice how clean text looks in recovery compared to touchwiz? It's obviously a different font than Android uses, but it seems like Samsung added an artificial sharpening filter to the OS.

you can use the cwm version for the captivate. there are visual bugs but it runs, flashes .zips backs up and restores. you need to mod 3e recovery first. i suggest checking stickies in the captivate section if you dont know how.

The Captivate update.zip that boots one into CWM works just fine. I dont see any "visual bugs" that were mentioned earlier either. I can nandroid backup and restore, and also wipe cache partition and wipe/factory reset as well.
The partitions of the /dev/blocks are IDENTICAL to the Captivate except for cache.rfs (bml11) and modem.bin (bml12), so this recovery is mapped to the correct partitions.
If anyone is bricked, please see my thread in the General Infuse forums, I'm working on a flashable Odin package to return us to stock.
Thanks,
-h8

[RECOVERY]CWM FINAL for the SGS4G - FROYO ONLY

Special thanks goes out to everyone who tested for us.
Also, make sure to thank @drhonk, without him, I probably would have given up a while ago.
Additional thanks to robbbbit for testing the final version, and to luckyduck69 who sent me his device to get this project going.
Here is CWM Final for the SGS4G.
You will still need to modify your stock recovery binary to be able to use CWM.
Kernel Devs can also compile CWM into their kernel by extracting the update.zip and building it into their initramfs.
To modify recovery:
download this file
MOD EDIT TO REMOVE DEAD LINKS
and use root explorer or adb push the file to /system/bin
DO NOT delete the current one there, or rename any files.
Just overwrite it.
CWM Final
MOD EDIT TO REMOVE DEAD LINKS
Place in the root of your SD. If you have a update.zip there already, delete it, and replace it with this one.
I have sent this to Koush as well to have it added to Rom Manager.

Better buy a nomex suit cause you're about to get torched.
Wrong place for a QUESTION. Look in the Bible and there are plenty of odin flashable ROMS as well as a kernel to gain root. Hope I don't come off as offensive it's just a lot of people here are getting tired of this type of stuff(me included).
EDITED TO ADD
Man there are THREE ODIN flashable roms on the front page of the dev section right NOW. LOOK before you post.

Anyways if your on GB and you want to use Odin why not flash a Dr Honk kernel you will get Cwm/ root and voodoo lagfix and ext4 aat the same time! Lol then you can flash the rom of your choice.
You can also use superoneclick 2.2 if all you want is root.
