[Q] Boot PC off of USB Mass Storage on Captivate - Captivate General

Has anyone tried setting up their sdcard to be a bootable USB Drive that oyu can boot a PC from?
Idea being:
1) Install bootable systemrescuecd or memtest on your sdcard
2) Plug your phone into the pc via usb, mount your sdcard as usb mass storage
3) Turn the computer on and have it boot systemrescuecd or memtest from the phone's sdcard.
I've tried it, but my desktop, eeepc or laptop do not see the Captivate's USB mass storage as a boot device. It has been done on a G1 (since I can't post links, google "g1 pc boot" and click the first link) and I'm trying to do the same on Captivate.
Any ideas?

I dont know, but it seems to me that you would have to make the internal sd card in it bootable. I'd try using the HP USB formatting tool. I use it all the time to make usb thumbdrives bootable. After doing that I'd think you might be able to boot from it.

I did. I didn't use the HP one, but I used multibootisos, which worked fine on my physical thumbdrive. The same process didn't work on the captivate.

Possibly a partition of the drive might work. Then you could format iit to work for your needs.
Nice idea btw

I'm thinking there is an issue (atleast with my phone) showing up as 2 drives. I dunno, I'm fussing with it and getting nowhere.

You get two drives because you have the internal memory and external memory mounted.
When you boot you computer, you need to be able to select the specific usb device to boot off of in bios. Usually you can hit F12 during boot to select it.

Right.. as I said, it worked fine with the physical thumbdrive.
I get why the captivate shows up as 2 devices.
I know how to select the boot device and all that. I'm saying neither of the captivate drives show up as a bootable device despite being setup exactly like the physical thumbdrive that does work as a boot device.

Cannot access SD card on Captivate

I connected my phone to my computer using USB, selected "Mass Storage", 2 new removable drives appeared on my computer. However, neither drives connect to the internal 16G SD card. Both drives told me to insert the media when I double clicked on it. I tried this on a XP and a Win 7 machine with the same result. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a defected phone?
I have the exact same problem on XP and win7... I've tried everything I can think of including several different cables.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on?
Make sure you're choosing "Mount" on the Captivate after connecting the cable.
See here:
http://capfaq.com/w/Connectivity#Connecting_to_a_Windows_based_PC
This device NEEDS drivers, even for the Massive Storage device (At least it didn't work for me, Win7 x64 until I installed the drivers)
Try downloading KIES and try again, the x64 drivers you can fin around here didn't seem to work for me.
What rom are you running?

You only need driver if you're on XP. No drivers needed for Vista or Win7.
But you do have to MOUNT the drives on your phone. There are reasons why a MOUNT is required. But if you're too lazy, you can download an app from market to auto-mount for you.

Incorrect. I have lost track of how many XP machines I've hooked my Captivate to in Mass storage mode and not needed to install any drivers.
Oh my god you guys rock... I never had to mount the device before. I wonder why that changed recently?
Anyway, mounting the device worked.
Thanks!!
When I go to my SD settings, it is already mounted. I've unmounted, then mounted to no avail. I've downloaded and installed teh drivers from Samsung and everything says it is successful. If I try to run in USB debug mode I get the same result except 3 drivers install automatically than the 1 when I am in regular mode. Any ideas?

Make sure you are connected directly to the back of the computer, not thru a hub, or the front of the computer case. I've heard the voltages needed have very tight tolerances. Try a different cable as well

You are doing the wrong thing. SD settings and mount/unmount in there is for the SD card mounting to your phone, not PC.
To connect Mass Storage mode to PC, you need set your USB mode to Mass Storage, and turn off USB debug mode. Once connected to PC, you need to go to notification window and tap on the USB notification to mount your SD cards to PC.
I just found that before I checked your reply. Thanks for the help. I can actual access the storage on the phone now without some weird settings. Now if 2.2 would only come out for the Captivate. Thanks.

I tried that but no result.
thx
It should be listed as usbdrive using your favorite file manager. Usually under
...
...
sdcard
sdcard2
usbdrive
Its not like windows. It doesn't pop up with a window when you plug it in. Flash drive must be formatted fat32. Android doesn't like ntfs

I do see the USB drive bit it's always empty. USB drive is fat32 formatted.
Using a USB mouse works great. I don't get a popup which notifies me about a connected usb drive like my archos 101 did.
Did a little discovery:
When connecting the tab to pc with a usb cable only then a "mount usb" message pops up.
Then a usb drive will work.
Now how do i get the gtab to mount the usb drive ?
I don't think any of these roms are gonna give you a popup when you load a usb drive. I just plugged one in on tnt 3.1 and it reads it thru file manager. I was on vegan beta4 and did the same thing yesterday
Edit: usb disk not usb drive
When you connect a cable from your pc to the tablet the pop up is to allow the tab to unmount the internal sdcard so your pc can read it.

I do not understand...what is location of the usb files then ?
Open iFileManager and hit the icon that looks like a house. Scroll down and you will find a folder named usbdisk. That is your usb drive. Open the folder. I'm assuming the usb drive is plugged in

/usbdrive is empty.
It becomes populates when i insert a mini usb cable and connect it to the pc.
This give me the mount option and only then i see files under /usbdrive.
idk then, I never had a problem reading the usb drive on vegan beta4. Sorry I can't help
OK, found it.
I have to unmount the sdcard first. Then the usb drive shows with files.
Thanks.
Cool....You may wanna drop a note in the vegan thread on what you did. Maybe others have had the same issue.

Hey. I just got a USB Flash Drive and tried connecting it to my GTab but no dice. I am running Vegan 5.1 and using ES File Explore. I navigate to the root directory and see sdcard, sdcard2, and usbdisk. Sdcard and sdcard2 has my internal storage and my micro usb storage files respectively. But nothing pops us in usbdisk. I tried removing the microsd, rebooting with the USB inserted, and unmounting the microSD but no dice.
Any hints?
Thanks,
Scott
Update: So I tried going to settings and unmounting the sdcard and now I can see the USBdisk. Odd. If I want to transfer data from one drive to another, I cant accomplish that because the SDcard is unmounted. Also all my appdata and stuff are not present. Any way to have both of these drives mounted at the same time?
Thanks

Hellfire 2.1 USB Mass Storage Faulty?

I'm new to Android custom roms and just flashed my G2x to Hellfire 2.1. Everything went pretty smoothly as I have relatively strong tech knowledge and followed all the guidelines carefully. The phone is now running a lot faster and everything looks great, with the exception of USB storage. After extensive searches I can't seem to find the solution to the problem.
The phone doesn't have an external SD card and I store everything on the internal SD. Under CM settings I have set the phone to use the internal SD. Latest LG G2x USB driver has been installed on Windows.
Now by default, USB debugging on the phone is ON. When I plug in the USB cable, the "Turn on USB storage" screen doesn't show up on phone and no SD drive is detected windows. When I turn USB debugging off, the "Turn on USB storage" screen comes up, and after clicking "On", Windows correctly detects the drive.
But after the phone reboots (USB debugging is now off since I set it off before reboot), the USB stops working again. This time the "Turn on USB storage" screen does show up on the phone, but after clicking it to turn on, Windows does not detect any drive. Basically nothing happens. However, the strange thing is if I go to turn the USB debugging back on, phone again prompts to turn on USB storage, and this time if I turn it on, Windows detects the drive. Then I turn off the debugging again, and it still works fine (screen comes up and Windows can detect).
So basically it works until the next reboot. No matter how the debugging option is set, the USB simply won't work right away. (If it's set to off, the problem described in the previous paragraph applies. If it's set to on, the phone simply won't show the "Turn on USB Storage" screen as stated initially in the post.
I have gone back and force and tweaked various settings all with the same result. I have also made sure to test this on different computers with fresh installed G2x drivers and they all exhibit the same problem.
Your help will be appreciated.
Assuming you flashed it correctly using nulifier to wipe and than flashed I would reboot to recovery go to advanced and fix permissions... Reboot turn debugging on and check use internal storage. The reboot again and than see if that fixes it for you.. I have 2.1 flashed and when I mount both sd's mount internal and external so it should be working for you if not you might have a corrupted download and would have to redownload and flash again

Do you mean you have both internal and external SD, and when you plugin the USB cable (I assume you have USB debugging on), both cards mount to the OS as two drives? Could you please do me a favor by taking out the external SD, and see if the internal SD would still mount correctly?
And btw are you mounting under Windows or Linux?
Thanks a lot.

Didnt work for me
DJLamontagneIII:
I finally got an external SD in. I reflashed, left USB debugging on. When I plugin the USB cable, the phone's "Turn On USB Storage" screen doesn't come up, but I noticed that in the pull down's notification/running it's there, below the "USB debugging turned on" ,so if I click that, the "Turn On USB" screen shows up, and after clicking to turn on, both drives mount on Windows.
Is this how your phone behaves too? If yours actually have the "Turn On USB Storage" screen pop up on front (just like the stock ROM does), what do you think is causing mine to behave in this way?
Thanks again.

[Q] ANY way of mounting internal storage to PC? (for data recovery)

Hey guys.
I realize the SIMPLE answer here is probably no, but I'm in dire straits here.
I don't know how, but somehow, my xoom deleted all of my photos, now I honestly don't know if it was on my external sd or internal storage things got messed up, but I'm currently running a full deep recovery on my sd card to check there.
I'd also love to be able to do the same with the internal storage. Since they took away the USB mass storage thing, this seems 'improbable'. But I really need some of the wise wizards in here to tell me if there's ANY way - maybe an old kernel? maybe there's a way to do it with linux!? If anyone could help me, I'd let you name my first-born child
you should be able to see both the SD card and the internal card mounted when you plug in the USB cable, make sure you have the correct USB driver. Hope this helps..
yeah, the MTP protocol allows me to see it, no problems. But it needs to be mounted as mass storage device for data recovery tools to be able to get to work on it, since MTP doesn't give access to the actual file-system.

[Q] usb OTG external hard disk fails

I have xoom mz 601 everest. i have rooted it, with latest rom 153.
there is no problem in my usb otg, I am using it to view files from my normal usb drive.
but there is this one thing. I can't make my external hard disk to work.
After i connect it to the usb otg, it looks fine and i can see that the power is not an issue, because it runs just like plugging it in a laptop.
but then, the xoom, notifies me saying, "SD card is damage. Try reformatting it",
the external hard disk works well in my laptop, i know there is no real damage in it.
How can I make it work in my xoom?

This has happened to me as well - as a precaution, copy your needed files from your sdcard to your pc for safe keeping. Take the sdcard out of the xoom, place it in a card reader on your pc, bring up the command prompt for that drive.
You can run Check Disk from the command prompt. At a command prompt, you can test the integrity of the "E" drive (whatever your sdcard drive is)" we will use "E" in this example. Typing the following command:
Code:
chkdsk E
To find and repair errors that are found in the "E drive" (your sdcard drive), use the following command:
Code:
chkdsk /f E
That should fix it.
thanks... What i did is just use an app that will mount it, and it mounted as is there is no damage it was said...
