I must ask the reasoning behind the pdf versus just formatting a nice post. Seems like a meaningless extra step

Nicely done! But I have to agree with MT, why doesn't someone put all of this info in the Wiki?

I put it as a PDF because then I can format it better so it is easier to look at. Additionally it can be printed. I did not post it on the wiki yet because it seems like no one has been using the wiki lately and it hasn't been updated.

so be the one to update it! I used the kaiser wiki a lot because it had tons of info. If you build it, they will come.

Good to hear the guide has been updated. I am getting my phone in a few weeks.

In your guide you say that a person may possibly return there phone to stock to get the Samsung updates for the GPS fix and Lag fix. How does one do this? I have not installed any other ROMS. I have only used the Pimp My Captivate Guide.

No. I said that if you use the lag fix or GPS fix you will probably have to use odin to go back to stock or else something will happen when you install the official OTA update.

Oh sorry. I misunderstood. One more question. I f I decide to return the phone to ATT do I just go through the normal recovery process. The ATT store here doesn't really check anything.

The best bet would be to run Odin. I don't really know how to do that but thats the only 100% way to undo mods.

I'm confused???
Maybe I'm missing the point but don't you already have a sticky about this in the same forum? Do you want this as a replacement to other one?

Yes, this one replaces his older one.

Awesome job putting this together. I will definitely reference it (and donate) when I get my unit in.
One thing though, it appears that your link under the "how to root" section doesn't work. It tries redirecting but never resolves. You might want to check that out. It wouldn't pull up in FF, IE, or Chrome

ok sure. I will replace it later today. Also I may add some battery and performance optimization tips. The unlocking guide also needs to be updated with my new Mac unlock tool and the newer version of the PC one. Is there any guide that you would like me to specifically add?

I appreciate what you did with the previous guide. It helped me quite a bit in getting started with learning the ins and outs of the Android system and my Captivate.
I tried to install the super circle battery mod a few nights ago, and I made a terribly n00bish mistake in using the wrong build (not style) version for my phone, blanking the screen and making it unuseable. This necessitated a hunt on how to return the setting to stock, so this mandated a hunt for how to use Odin. And, of course, the forums were in maintenance mode when I was ROM hunting, making a stressful situation even more fun But it's back on, SuperRootered, and lag-fixed, and running better than ever before.
The wiki was a great idea, but the wiki was a pain to navigate...it was often just easier to search the forums. I'm probably going to blog on using Odin for flashing in the near future (if nothing else than for my own reference), but it'd be nice for some sort of introductory article on Nandroid and Titanium and how to use them as well. It'd be easier for me if the SDK would ever install on my machine, but I'll have to take time and dedicate a day to setting all this stuff up.

Pdf is fine, but there is no reason all the information can't be listed in the original post. thanks for the work though, the wiki helped me out when I got the phone.
I think it is a mistake to include sideload wonder machine as the only pc option for simplicity reasons, especially since you go into command line with the circle battery

Thank's a lot for this guide! i followed it yesterday with awesome results.
Are you planning on updating it with other information? Or will i have to learn about ROMs and what titanium does on my own? lol
I would also like to know how to set everything back to stock on a Mac.

New way to root

Ya know it wouldn't be bad to use this for the sim unlock, already aside for the s-off, it did take me less time with visionary also, like 2 mins this is taking like 5 and only to say, you can give any commands regardless but how do you know it wasn't pushed by adb or something? Need verify then profit, looks simple enough. And dev never posted step to step directions despite a video just briefly explaining
i mean what if someone was deaf or derp? you think they're going to understand the video?

I'll look at it. I've been trying to build a one click root for 3 weeks now, and im not sure if its actually possible with the tools we currently have available.
edit: Yeah, he got exactly where i did, only i decided it was pointless to release this. It just pushes the needed files and then you have to run everything as you normally would through the terminal emulator. makes pushing the files easier if you dont know what needs to go where, buts thats about it.
This is not a new way to root but a way for people that cant follow instructions very well way to root. This is using the methods found here in the forum allready like gfree but it has packaged everything together and he has written a script to execute some of the steps and to install things where they need to be. I am surprised that this hasn't been done sooner by someone. I am already rooted so I cant test it out, but I did look it over and it all looks great. I am curious to see the feedback. I didn't have a problem using the other methods and could do them just as easy as this is but I do have a little more experiance than alot of people that are trying to root their phone.

Yeah that where i ended up. I wasn't happy with it since you still needed to manually do everything in the term emulator, which is really the only tedious part of rooting. Everything else is simple. To use this you need to setup adb, but by itself is enough instruction to learn how to copy the needed files to the specified location. could still be helpful, and it definitely wont cause any more issues than the normal root procedure.
Working on the oneclick, i got to the point where i could root my phone in about 30 seconds longer than it takes to reboot twice, and this might take longer for me. lol.
this is for people who don't know how to read and follow simple instruction and IMHO, and i know some will share this opinion.
If you cannot read and follow SIMPLE instructions you shouldn't root your phone.

I'd lay down my phone in a bet that more Android phones have been truly bricked by ignorance more than anything else. I also wonder how many people that have thought they've "bricked" their phones really haven't but because they do not want to take the time to learn and and get out of the boot loop or a flash stuff via fastboot.

Actually he included the adb files in his zip so it sets it up so his script can do the file transfer.
I do completely agree though that if people just learned, read and searched a little bit more about Android and their phone, they would be alot better off and have less problems.
Still need drivers installed. could be a point of failure for people unwilling to do it on their own.

Need step by step process for at&t branded inspire unlock process

Although Ill probably be flogged for this... here we go. I just bought an att inspire for me and my parents. Anyway seems significantly more difficult a process than past devices ive owned; tilt 2, tilt 1, etc...
Anyways just curious if someone could spell this out for me in detail specifically for an att branded inspire from start to finish?

#2-H-A-C-K K-I-T
#3-F-O-L-L-L-O-W T-H-E I-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N-S.
Now that I have spelled it out, in all seriousness, just download those two things from the second sticky post and follow the instructions. Took me an hour bc of pc issues but relatively straight forward.

I dont think its you guys on the forums responsibility to put this in clear terms but would appreciate if someone could lend a hand. Like a start to finish guide for someone who is completely new to this device and the android os...
Like, what to i need to back up, wtf is booting into recovery and how is this done??? You see what i mean? To someone who is brand new to this device this is not as clear as everyone Ive asked makes it sound. 2: Watch the video of this method on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0sQFoS_m_8
3: follow video from youtube while doing the root.
4: download and install a rom of your choice or keep the one from bubby.

the key is:
after you root, when you restart hold volume down. that opened up a world of ROMS to me.
if I had not already rooted, I would write a step by step for you.
just watch the video.
also, back up your contacts and messages to something - google or mobilego or another program like titanium backup (pre-root) before you do anything. expect to reinstall apps. (amazon is great b/c it keeps track of what you install so you can do an easy reinstall)
hey guys I have a questions. I have my phone rooted using the Simple one Click method, so that that mean my Inspire is also unlocked, like if I put a different sim it would it work or not.
If you just bought the Inspire, you more than likely don't have anything on the phone yet that needs to be backed up other than contacts, which can easily be restored via HTC sync. Bubby's method will spoon-feed you through the entire process, as the tool will do all of the dirty work for you, including the making of your Gold Card. The hack kit is just a little more hands-on, but is just as easy to use. Read through the instructions for both methods, look at the FAQs, and take a look at the threads for each method. You'll see that almost every problem that was run into was solved just by going to the FAQs or by following a quick link from the thread. If terminology is intimidating you, the Devs always do a great job of explaining steps/procedures in layman's terms. The Inspire is a challenge to root because of the necessary ROM-downgrade so that the phone can become exploitable, but take your time with the procedure and you'll get it knocked out on no time. Good luck.

As someone who has just rooted and I am a noob on Android phones. just take your time and read up on the rooting process before you start. It does look intimidating at first, but if you can follow instructions, its really not that hard. The above methods is what I used and good luck.
The point is that it's a little bit of a leap of faith... you have to follow the steps as you go not knowing what the instruction itself is gonna do the most of the time... the language is indeed intimidating but let's face it... if they say 'boot in recovery mode pressing the power button while you hold volume down' you don't need an explanation of what recovery mode means.... you just press the buttons in the order.. eventually u will understand the rest...

Instead of just clicking the link, try right clicking the link and select 'open in new tab'. Theres been several links and downloads that have done that to me too and the opening in new tab seems to work.
Edit: Its working for me here at work (WinXP machine) but home machine (Win7) it will do that also, pop up a blank window and even have the security bar at the top and nothing happens after approving security. But if I open in new tab instead, works every time

I would also like to know this. I just got an Inspire yesterday, moving over from a Dell Streak, so i'm doing the research on getting Rooted so i can throw some ROM's on this thing.
With the Streak i never had to deal with eng & radio s-off stuff and this whole Gold Card thing is a little odd too. I'm supposing its because of the different MFG's.
Thanks in advance to anyone offering their wisdom to this thread.

There is no absolute, fool-proof, One Click, rooting method for the Inspire.
Do some research, take notes, watch the videos and do whichever you feel most comfortable with.

As said above there is no fool proof way. If I recall correctly the GUI uses almost the same method as the hack kit except it does most of the commands for you. They both use the same exploit they both downgrade the rom and radio to root and s-off. The major problem that people run into is that the recovery screen is black. There are work arounds for it, which are in the link I posted above.
so there is a chance that the one click root MIGHT work for this? I've read up on the hack kit, while it sounds complex, it appears very simple...

I used the One Click method, in conjunction with the very fine video that accompanies it. Watch the video a couple of times, and then follow it step by step when starting the process, and you'll be fine. Although I did run into the CW black screen problem, it was an easy fix.
This thread is totally in the wrong place. Not to flame but come on. This is all over general and can be found inside of 5 min. I just read a great article about not being a fan of one click rooting. The editor had this opinion because there are all kinds of people out their rooting their phones that have no business doing so and when, and chances are good that it will happen, they brick their phones running back to their carrier for them to fix their mistakes because they don't want to do any research on their own. This in turn is leading carriers to locking down their phones with locked bootloaders and trying to figure out ways to identify root users to suspend their service. I totally agree with this article and while I encourage noobs to learn and root their phones, it requires a lot of reading and some people are just not up for it.
OK that's the end of my rant.
Please do the research and become a contributing member of xda so we can all benefit from each other and keep striving for a better android experience.

Agreed...I couldn't have said it any better.
It's not hard to root, the hardest part is following a bunch of half ass guides because people that write them expect you to know everything.
I ended up having to make my own rooting guide back when the N1 came out because I had to compile 4-5 different guides just to get all the information needed.
I can't speak for the rooting guide for the Inspire since my phone doesn't come in until tomorrow.. but we shall see
Question from a newbert
hello all,
recent convert from the atrix to inspire...had a question based on the S-off vs ENG S-off...what's the difference?
if I do this in the proper steps then will I be fully rooted, S-off, ENG s-off?
1) Bubby - HTC Inspire 4G Simple Root and S-OFF
2) jkolojo - One click ENG S-OFF
3) then flash radio? which one is better?
Radio_12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M - (HTC Ace Gingerbread S Generic 2.16.0.0)
12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M - (HTC Ace Gingerbread S Generic 2.25.0.0)
Is clockworkmod included in the Bubby root?
After that is fully installed, can I flash any ROM I want?
Thanks, really appreciated!
Also what's the difference between all the different rooting methods?
I know SuperOneClick for Atrix made a mess. Which one do you guys recommend for a beginner?
Ace Kit

bubby root

[PORT][WIP][dev]ICS port [booting-w graphics] looking for devs

Hello everybody,
I am quite new to android as i just bought this phone 3 months ago and before that i had an iphone.
I know everybody is happy with the upcoming ICS and the SDK that could be used for theme's, sounds and even more. but i know some of you are looking for a port from the SDK.
At this moment i am working on a port for the Sensation, but i have little to no knowledge on porting roms and such. so it takes a little while. but good news is i got it to boot up the service ril-daemon, and as far as i can see it will take a little bit more work till it will boot up fully.
If by any chance i can get it to work i do not promise that anything will work.
but i just wanted you guys to get a heads up on what i am doing at the moment and if anyone likes to help with development you are welcome to throw me a PM..
I will be updating this thread every once in a while when i have made progression.
A lot of work has been done. and i have made something that boots but needs a lot of work.
Whats working
-backlight screen
-buttons
-volume buttons
-boots
-hw acceleration (not tested just yet)
-screen
whats not working
-touchscreen
-all the rest.
we just got the screen working but wanted you guys to know it. we will test things out and upload later on.
device has got graphics working, but a load of services are failing so we still need to fix those things and hopefully get touch working soon as well.

ICS SENSATION v0.0.3
Just for dev only at this moment.
I'm excited either way.atleast someone is attempting a port. Alot of the devs look at it as a waste of time, but I don't think it is, especially if its as useful as the nexus s port. I wish you good luck my friend and if your looking for anyone to test, don't hesitate to PM me.

Nice to see you are making some progress with that
Keep us posted

Glad to see someone with better ability wants this too.
I myself have been trying this just flashed my first .zip file last night have not even run a log cat on it yet. So you are way further then me. I have also been doing a lot of research through the forums and plan to expand my research to other places on the web tonight to see if might come across anything. I got a lot of reading and learning to do as I am certain you know way more about what you are doing. Best of luck to you and I will PM you if I come across anything you might could find useful.
Oh yeah by the way you probably should have posted this in the development forums, that is if you do not already have a thread there. I have not visited the development forums today yet.
Best of luck to you.
you're way ahead of me too - zips won't even flash for me (no idea why) and if I do bludgeon one into working, then logcat doesn't work
Nice, three devs working on this. I'm really happy right now. You guys should just all work together on this so our device will be the second or third to actually run the port

I will have to go back and find the post I read it in last night but the poster named a file in the ICS system folder that they had to change to get logcat working. When I find it I will message you.
@nory82688 , Please I do not deserve to be called a dev, I am just trying to give back to the XDA community some.

haha thanks, but I've lost interest - although it may be handy to make this more publicly accessible information. I'm also not a dev by any stretch of the imagination
Ok I found the post I was talking about, it was in the Nexus one port thread.

I've gotten connecting to the network working so far. SMS seems to work fine and it lists my network. I'm unable to use the data though. It just tries to connect but fails. Unfortunately system/bin/sh doesn't work so no logcat currently to see why.
EDIT: Removing /system/bin/sh and replacing it with a symlink to /system/bin/ash seems to have worked. Now I can run logcat at boot at least.

good job
reserved for testing!
Wow i hope and pray you guys get this port working for the Sensation and i wish yall lots of luck. I know it can be done with patience and pure thinking!
cannot locate 'android_atomic_cmpxchg'...
That's the error that's preventing boot for me.
It's 3am for me so I'm done for last night (this morning) I know I don't have a perfect port such as I know my inits need work, which might add another issue once this one is figured but yeah, idk where you guys are.

I have no time to dev this weekend but i will work on it on monday again. There is a load of work for me tto do.. i think you need to search for the file in any rom thats working and see if it is presented within the files you have.

Well I am pretty much stuck for the moment ass I can not get my build to even flash right now and can not figure out why........
But tarends messaged me and it seems like he is very close to a fully booting build. So hopefully when we all hear back from him he will have something that is ready for trouble shooting to get things working which I already have a lot of info that might help get a couple of things working on a build that will boot.

I suggest you PM tarends and ask him if he can give you a run down on what he has, I have not asked if he wants to discuss everything here in the forums yet. He would probably would not mind but I would rather ask first. I think I might have a lead on what to do to get my build to flash. I am not sure but I think I have to edit the build.prop cause it is looking for 4 mount points but only finds 3. Thanks to XDA senior Member malybru and XDA Recognized Developer mike1986 for helping to get me going in the right direction.

[Q] Any way to turn this into a tablet with WiFi only?

This was my wifes POS Phone till I upgraded her to a SGSIII for Christmas. Now I have a device that would be perfect for my daughter if it weren't for the pesky phone option and Sprint bloatware. Are there any roms available that strip this phone to bare bones with no radios except WiFi? Haven't been able to find any and it might not be on the top of the Dev's todo list so if anyone is up to a ROM that will make this device at least usable because as a phone it SUCKS, but for a kiddo it would be a great toy with some of the game apps. Thanks in advance, and if I missed a ROM that does exactly what I'm asking in the mountains of pages in the Dev forum, please use only a small flame as I'm old and have a cold LOL.
A tip: when asking for help you might want to avoid talking trash about a device we users enjoy using.
My advice, 'the device sucks' and is a 'pos' so why bother doing anything with it. Go buy yourself, your kid or whoever an ipod and move on.
Lol why should we help you? One of the most stupid threads here

lol
Uhh why not just turn mobile networks off n wifi on. And take the time to root your pos so u can delete the bloat.

Just hate HTC. Have since the TP2. No appologies for that when they make life just such a pain in the ass. Even cringed when the wife chose it but cest la vie. I'm not going against the boss. Maybe I'm just stupid but I've tried rooting but its a 2.3.4 and every option this thread gives me doesn't work for some reason or another. ShiftRR doesn't run at all saying ADB is at fault but I can ADB into the whole phone myself no problems, ShiftySonOfA almost works but creates a boot loop that thankfully is repaired by doing an --undo, Quickroot seems to work but then unroots the phone just as soon as it reboots. Trying to do it manually using the info on here gives me exactly the same boot loop as the ShiftySonOfA.BAT file does and trying to update from SD using a PG06img.zip I got from a rootkit fails. I can't help it if I'm a Samsung fan. Their goal in life isn't making their users stress out over their phones by daring to think they can do better than they can. If its too much to ask that my RAM isn't more than half full just with OS and bloatware because this phone refuses to root then so be it but even if its miles below my Nexus it's still MILES above any iPoo device.
Then throw it out and go buy a portable media player, or better yet send it to a dev who would put it to use and go buy some type of portable media player.
Edit: and to anyone who actually wants to try and help this guy, does this really seem like a person we need to deal with in our little speedy community in the future?

ROFL Speedy community. Half of you are talking about swapping out to Photons and the other half are moving to One X's. yes I've read an awful lot before posting a question. Guess I'll be getting absolutely no help here. Not that there is much help available for this device when all the links are broken and the ones that are working, don't work for their intended purpose. Feel free to delete the thread MOD I'll stay where I'm welcome, in the Samsung sections.
Happy to see you leave, please don't come again.
Edit: and you couldn't have read to much or you would have been able to root it. Well then again, you were calling your recovery touchwiz in another thread soooo... I'm guessing you have some trouble grasping things at times.

Well its probably been a while since you researched how to root, because if you done that more recently or even looked at my sig, you would have already rooted that shift. I posted it here and in 3 other well-known forums so its hard to believe that you haven't found it.
