Motorola XT 720 Start up problems

Why won't my XT720 start up?
When it is connected to my charger, the four action keys light up. Despite leaving it to charge overnight, it appears that the battery isn't charging. The phone won't start while it is charging, neither when connected to the mains or to my car power supply.
I bought a new battery without any improvement.
When I access the bootloader screen it says there is too little power in the battery to program the phone.
The phone is not recognised by my computer when connected.
The phone is running Froyo 2.2. with Dexter rom.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions......apart from binning the phone!

I think the phone likes to selfboot with too little charge. See if you can shut it down cleanly so it won't autoboot. It's annoying but you may have to watch it very carefully to catch it when it's trying to boot because it will drain itself back to death very quickly.

Hi Oakham, do you have any update to your case? I have the same problem now.
Yesterday, I noticed the battery bar went down to orange region (about 30%?). I plugged it to the wall for about an hour (the charging symbol showed up). Later I found out that the battery bar did not move (still stuck at orange region). Later the night, I tried to charge again (the bar was red at about 15% or less). The charging symbol showed up. Later I checked, the battery bar did not improve but declined. The phone eventually went out of battery and turned itself off.
I tried to continue to charge using both the wall outlet and PC USB. No luck. I could not even power up the phone now. Did you manage to resolve your case? Anyone got the same problem and found the solution?
I thought about buying a new battery to try, but then I saw your post, so I hesitated.

I've had this problem. Watching the phone closely while charging and pulling the battery whenever it starts to boot works. After about the fourth time doing this I got a battery charger from amazon for ~$5 because it's gently loving annoying.

So when you first bumped into this problem, how did you get it back to boot up?
I followed your advice to watch it while it's charging. When I saw the motorola logo showed up, I pulled the battery. Then I plugged it back and let it charged for some more time. Then I tried to power up the phone. The motorola logo came on and then the big battery symbol came on saying it's 100% full (but i knew it's not). Later, those 4 soft touch button lid on. This cycle repeated. And I'm clueless.
Please let me know the steps you took to recover your phone.

Once you get into the system use 'power off' from the menu. It won't autoboot then and you can leave it in the wall overnight. I think. A voodoo doll may work, too. It can be really frustrating, but I've been able to get out of it every time so far. Like I said, I got sick of this game and found a battery charger for pretty cheap.

Try deleting batterystats.bin and doing what M said.. can you get to open recovery and charge from there?

I also had the 'M' logo screen, stuck on-screen when the charger was connected. There is a post which suggests, for this, 'Pull battery.2) Insert battery and hit power button;3) As soon as you hit the power button, hold the volume up button down until the unboxing logo comes up.'
As my phone is still under warranty, I sent it back to see if there is a physical problem. I'll try the above suggested solution when my phone comes back from 'Motorola', whether or not it is repaired by them! I've also bought a battery charger for the phone's BP6X battery from e-Bay (£9.50, including another battery.)At least I will then know that a battery is fully charged before I try fixes.

Damn!
I had about the same. Battery got drained down from 80% to 5%. Then the screen for "please plug in for charging" appeared. Some moments later the phone went dark and now I can't get it to work again. It doesn't react on the power button. Even when plugged in the charging-symbol doesn't appear. I can't turn it on. Sucks!
Any ideas?

My phone has been repaired by Motorola, under warranty, and returned after four days. Accompanying report is brief: 'Software update and screening'. Seems to be working fine.......just like a brand new phone!

This morning i find myself in the same situation. My phone have the soft keys iluminated but it didint work.OMG... what happend durring the night.So i tried to boot the phone but nothing happend,and after reading tje post on the problem i have tried to remove the battery and put`it back, tryed anothe reboot, and holdind the buttons power+vol up. Nothing worked. But when i have tried the combination power + vol up + cammera shutter and plugged the cable. at first nothing happend. but after i have relesed the buttons the logo apeared and started charging. after that i powerd on my phone normaly

My phone does that everytime it charging and I remove the plug when it's in sleep mode. I have to remove the battery and it's power on normally.

[Q] Shuts down completely when not charging

I posted this to another similar thread but they have solved their problem but mine is not solved.
A little background:
It was most recently upgraded to the the newest OTA and been stable since then. The unit is nearly 1 year old B50. So I know all about holding the power button down for different lengths for different purposes. It is NOT that. Until two days ago, everything was working fine.
First, I couldn't turn it on. I thought since I was travelling and using it a lot, it just ran the battery down. So when I got to the hotel room, I plugged it into the wall charger and it turned on. I was relieved for a while. Then I checked the battery (dual battery widget) and it shows 86%. When I was leaving the room, i pulled it off the wall and bam...it shuts down completely. Curious, I plugged in the charger and it boots back up (asus logo and whirling circle). I decided to leave it plugged in all night.
The next morning, I pulled it off the wall and bam, complete shut down. I plugged it back in and check the battery status. Still showing 86% and I notice it is not charging. I check the battery summary and it shows, battery = unknown error.
I did the hard reset (with it plugged in) VolDown/Power sequence. No luck. I decided to wait until i get home to test further.
At home, I plugged it into the dock. Widget shows the base battery is charging but the tablet is not charging. (it turns on when plugged into the base). It stays on even after I unplugged the base from the charger but the moment i remove the tablet from the base, it shuts of completely.
At that time, I decided to do a complete factory reset. After the reset, it is still having the same problem and dual battery widget is reporting the same unknown error problem.
In summary:
1) The unit will not turn on if I don't have the power cable plugged in.
2) When the cable is pulled out, the unit turns off and will not turn back on
3) When the cable is plugged in, it turns on and work just fine
4) When I put it on the keyboard dock, it turns on and work just fine
5) When I pull it out of the keyboard, it turns off and will not turn back on
6) I have soft reset, hard reset and factory reset (all with power plugged in) because nothing will happen without the power plugged in
7) Battery status shows 86% but not charging:
--When plugged into the wall
8) Battery status shows 86% but not charging while in the dock.
--The dock battery shows that it is charging and the light on the dock is green
I have tested and knows the charger works and the dock battery works.
The main unit battery will not deplete and will not charge and will not keep the unit running.
What do I need to do? Any thoughts? I would greatly appreciate some help.

Are you rooted? and did you try to clear the battery stats?

you can use that to clear your previous battery stats, and may help with getting a better reading on whats wrong. a messed up battery stat maybe messing with the charging process.

No, it is not rooted. I have just reset to factory settings again. But I might take that route soon if I don't hear from Asus. Is there an good detailed instructions for rooting my TF101?

you can start there. i got rooted when it was in HC didnt like the stock feel, so went to Prime Rom( honeycomb builds) the dev kept it close to stock but with some tweaks to the kernel. was a bit afraid to root at first, but just read through the tutorials, and just did it.

OK, nothing else seems to work. So, I am trying to go down this rooting road and using the battery calliberation tool.
As I was reading through the instructions, I find the build version supported is much older than mine (9.2.1.21) so, unless i am reading something wrong, this will not work.

[Q] Did I just brick my Evita One X?

I do apologize for filling up this forum with yet another "Did I brick..." question, but I'm really at my wits end and need some guidance.
This morning I decided to update my kernel to ElementalX 5.0. Prior to this I was using the 4.5b kernel and had no issues, but I wanted to move to the stable release and hadn't had any issues in the past. I have ViperXL 3.2.3 installed on this as well. I have yet to apply S-Off as I haven't had any real issues at the time and wanted to wait for the weekend when I had enough time to dedicate to the process (life is hectic blah blah blah).
I downloaded and installed the 5.0 kernel as I had previously, making a nandroid prior to the install. I decided to try some of the overclocks/undervolts that everyone raves about so during the install I chose the 2.1GHz overclock (because I can always step it down if it gets flaky, right?) as well as overclocking the GPU and undervolting to 850. I also went with zRAM as usual. After this was done and the phone rebooted twice (a common occurrence) I was brought to the window where Android was optimizing my apps. After that completed, I was brought to my home screen where I saw the clock and everything else. It looked like yet another successful install....and then the phone went black. Since then I have been unable to get it to boot. Pressing and holding the Power + Volume Down does nothing. I've held it for over a minute and no blinking capacitive lights or anything. The charge light does not come on when it's plugged in and, while my computer first tried to install the drivers when I plugged it in, I received an error saying the device was unplugged and no matter what I do I cannot get it to try to install again. Device Manager doesn't show it as being plugged in and it no longer comes up in Windows Explorer. Prior to the install the batter was at 83% and I have had it plugged in now for almost 20 minutes and still the charge light has not illuminated.
I never thought it would be possible to kill this phone, but I think I successfully did. Does anyone have any insight, suggestions, or helpful pointers. Yes, I know this was a risk I took doing this and I am not going to bemoan the fact that I did this to myself...I just really want to know if it's possible to resurrect this phone.

Yes into the wall charger...and hold power for thirty seconds does anything light up?

As for my own experience I have had trouble getting my phone to reboot or get into the bootloader when it plugged in. The charger seems to keep the phone turned on while it charging. Try unplugging it from the charger and try again.

This happened to me too, but I got it to reboot by holding down the power button. What's happened is that the phone thinks the battery is dead. When it comes back up, you'll probably show 1% charge. Somehow or another, the battery monitor data gets corrupted. I think it's related to the general battery data bug that's plagued this phone from the beginning.
Your phone clearly can't handle 2.1 and undervolting (I increased my voltage to run 2.1). Bump up the voltage when you get it back up.

Definitely. The wall charger is much faster than USB from a computer.

I ran home and grabbed my wall charger and brought it back to work. I plugged the phone into the charger and let it sit. After about 2 minutes, the charging LED lit up. I gave it about 15 minutes and then tried to power it on but it was no go, turning off the charging light and not doing anything, so I let it charge for another 30. When I thought it should be good and ready, I decided to go ahead and attempt to boot into the bootloader, as my fear was that the undervolt and massive overclock would most likely bring me back to square one. Holding down Power and Volume Down, I said a silent prayer to the device gods.....and the capacitive buttons began flashing.
Once I got into the bootloader, I quickly booted into TWRP, cleared cache and Dalvik, and then reinstalled ElementalX 5, this time choosing the stock voltage and not overclocking the GPU. I kept the overclock at 2.1 because, like I said before, if the phone is flaky, I can dial back the speed and restore functionality. I like the idea of having the option to go balls-to-the-walls if I WANT to, but not necessarily will I go that route.
After the lengthy kernel install and the normal 2 boots, I was met with my beautiful Viper lock screen. Thank you guys so much for the insight into needing to charge from the wall instead of the PC. I never imagined the computer would refuse provide a charge to it if it was completely dead (or the phone thought it was completely dead...once I got into TWRP it stated battery life was 86%). I am calibrating the battery now as I just realized it hasn't been done in probably 6 ROM installs.....derp!
Since this issue is resolved now, the thread can be closed. Thanks again, all!

USB charging might still work, it would just take a lot longer. Some folks have had to plug there wall charger for hours or overnight, even on the wall charger, to get their phone booted again. So the wall charger is just better since its faster.

And it may have, but the thing I noticed in the 90 or so minutes it was connected to my work PC was that the phone was the coldest it had ever been since I got it, meaning that the usual warmth caused by charging was not present at all. I did notice in Device Manager that when I plugged in the phone, it would register the phone as an HID (Human Input Device) and then it would disappear, only to reappear again and then disappear once more. This would happen non-stop until I disconnected it, so perhaps that's why it didn't charge at all during the time it was plugged into the computer? In any event, good ol' wall current supplied the juice necessary to bring this sucker back to life, so I'll file this info in my memory banks and make sure I have a wall charger at my desk from now on.

Battey shows "Unknown" and always at 0%

Looking for some help to get my nexus 5 working. The phones battery indicator is always at 0% not matter what I’ve tried (I’ve played youtube for like 3 hrs so I know there is juice in the battery)

Things done with no results
Swapped batteries from a working nexus.
Reinstalled stock ROM (L)
Left to charge overnight.
Cleaned cache from Recovery Mode
Used app to recalibrate the battery
The phone itself will boot up with a blank screen. I have to unplug the battery connector and then plug in the power USB. At this point it only shows the battery with flash. Its on for some seconds and the reboots over and over again.
I get it to work by connecting back the battery to the main board during one of the loops. (Sometimes holding the power +Volume up to get to the google display and then connecting)
Any help ??

When you installed L did you use the Google flash all bat file?

Yes ..I ran the flash-all.bat
The phone itself was in Kit Kat when I got it with this issue. I tried it with L to see if the issue would go away.

Other than flashing 4.4.4 clean...with wipes and seeing how it is...it could be a hardware issue unfortunately.

You've discovered the holy grail of infinite battery usage? I'm not seeing any issue here. JK, it's probably a bug in the preview software as can be expected.

Could be a bad battery as well.

The phone boots up to a blank screen. Only way to see anything on the screen is to unplug and replug the battery wire. Then everythings normal up until you have to restart.

I am on the same page. My Nexus is showing same results. I have also replaced the battery with a new one. Only one thing different in mine, I started noticing signal drops then the radio completely started to went off. Now the battery is at 0% always whenever I get it to boot that is. Otherwise it's blank with vibrations.
A fix is in great need. Also, I have tried multiple ROMs right now I am on the latest L Build.
Can you replace your flex cable with a working Nexus and write the results? I think it might fix it from the hardware side. Where I live, the flex cable isn't available! :-/

[Q] Reviving the (possibly) dead battery

Hey guys,
I've got a Google Pixel phone today and it's having a major problem. Battery won't charge, at all. Here's what I did:
1. Checked and cleaned the USB-C port
2. Checked with 2 chargers (A normal USB 2.0 type charger and a LG G6 fast charger)
3. Tested it with 2 USB-C cables. One is from the LG G6, the other one is the original that came with the phone.
4. Tried charging it using the laptop USB ports (3.0)
5. Ran a battery tester which said the battery was alright (an apk)
Android version running: 8.1.0 with Feb. security patch
The seller also said that the microphone and possibly the loudspeaker don't work. I would love to charge the phone and try the Android P BETA program on it, see if it solves anything.
I've ordered a new battery from Sweden (possibly not original, but I've read that it's alright)
Any tips?

Edit: The phone indicates that the battery is charging (both when it's shutdown and plugged in). The battery is at 1% now and the phone shuts down immediately - won't power-up at all.

I have a similar issue with a Pixel I bought refurbished (might just return it) - but the battery won't charge past 75%; got up to 84% one time, though. Even plugged in, once the battery gets to its 'max', the percentage will actually go down a little, to around 70% (if it stays plugged in at >70% then it usually goes down, with screen off). I also noticed mine doesn't seem to charge at all when powered off (probably a big warning sign) and also sometimes won't charge until booted up and unlocked (sucks to pick up your phone that's been plugged in a couple hours to see 4% battery with the charging indicator on the status bar says the phone is charging....).
It WILL charge if it gets booted into (TWRP) recovery - so, if your phone stays on while connected to laptop, try booting into bootloader and fastboot boot twrp-latest.img (easy to find thread for that, or just go TWRP.me website and find it there).
If that doesn't work (locked bootloader, etc.), try charging it while in the stock recovery, but I don't think it'll give you an indicator. If all those fail to give it a charge try charging inside bootloader, plug and unplug a few times, make sure USB connectors are clean. Good luck with the replacement battery, screen/digitizer can easily get messed up during dissasembly...

Hey, thanks for the tips.
I unfortunately tried all of that before it wouldn't boot up anymore, so no luck there. Also, no indicator at the top, battery is probably alright, might be a software issue or something, but can't tell since I can't update it to Android P or atleast downgrade it. I guess I'll have to wait for the battery to arrive and then try it like that. Hopefully that works.
