[Q] Skype on android WTF??? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,am a loyal winmo user went from HTC Touch->HTC HErmes->HTC Kaiser->HTC TP2->Xperia x1
Now after like 6 years on winmo and the advent of the noobified WP7 , i thought that i was ready to make the big jump to Android, and was eying up the Desire/Samsung galaxy S or willing to wait for the VISION (QWERTY)...then i came across the DEALBREAKER :
is it really possible that since the blocking of fring there is no way to make Skype to Skype voice calls on android over WIFI?
Not even anyone on this site can hack something together ??
BTW i am based in UK and would have to fork out 500-600£ for these devices (7-900$) as i dont believe in contracts..and make 90% of my calls on skype to skype over wifi...so i hope you can all understand my shock at skype not working given it worked on all my my 6+yrs old legacy winmo devices..

video calling using Polaris

Hi guys,
Is there any software which allows video calling on windows mobile?
Thank you!
You mean other than dialer included?
The dialer included only uses 3G, I think yallow means over any other network like Wi-Fi. There was one company who did that (forgot the name), but no demo or so, you know that kind of closed company which asks ridiculous prices for crappy software
I wished only Skype would port the video to mobile... BTW Live Messenger should have incorporated voice calls too, to compete against Skype (of course, I like the way it is, prefer Skype over Microsoft big time )
Yes, I mean video calling over internet, not 3G.
It is a pity, SabbeRubbish, you forgot the name of that software. I would buy it and share my experience. =)
Good news, I've searched my history and found it
--> http://www.tabletmedia.com/ <--
I think this is what you want.
There is a trial I see now:
Voice only, no messaging, video or dual-mode support.
Includes G.711, G.722 and MS-GSM speech codecs.
Windows Mobile 2003 to 6.0

The Internet can come on 3G or Wi-Fi. If you are looking for Video chatting over LAN (in this case wirelessLAN or bluetooth), thats a different story. Please be more specific next time.
M$ and Skype won't integrate the video functionality until there's a higher 3G coverage over the countries. The datarate is just too small on GPRS for Video chatting, and M$ is still several steps behind Skype in this field
gnick666,
Do you really think it matters for the software where the Internet comes from (3G or Wifi or GPRS or whatever)? I don't think so. That's different ISO/OSI layers. Why do you ask me to be more specific if you don't have any answer?
SabbeRubbish, many many thanks. I'll check this out tomorrow.
Regards.

Video calling over internet.. Very interseting.. Can you tell me how to do it?
AT&T Wireless
I was doing my own due diligence on this subject matter and figured that there is a way to utilitze the front camera on the TC.
Have you guys checked out AT&T's video calling?
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/messaging-internet/media-entertainment/attvideoshare.jsp
So far they list certain compatible phones, but do you think that it will work with the TC?
Seems like it works for 3G phones such as the TC...

You're welcome.
About the OSI layers, it obviously matters where internet comes from as the video calling (standard HTC) comes ONLY through 3G. So there is some kind of difference, but I think this is mainly a commercial difference: immagine how much more money operators will make if everyone starts making 3G video calls!

Not only that, there were some programs that used a Local network (not the internet) for video calling... of course the were derailed before being implemented....
I will not insist, that's just my IMHO. I think that video-software just gets an interface to send data through. The only question here is bandwidth. Theoretically it should work over any internet connection with enough bandwidth (HSDPA, WiFi, USB-PC, etc...).

I agree, truly. But obviously most software wants to handle connections themselves or so. Anyhow, my before mentioned solution DOES work on LAN, just don't know if it's affordable.
I use 3g VideoCall from Telme,it works fine on my TC except for the video right now
I use 3g VideoCall from Telme,it works fine on my TC except for the video right now (they say they will release a new version in march or april).
You can download it (from the download section) and use it for free (or with an account just like skype)after registering for free as a Free Member from here : http://web2.telme.sg/cedel/index.php?option=mod_joinus
With "Route 60" activated (as a distributor) u can even call for free to 60 countries on fixed phones (from which 6 countries on fixed AND MOBILES for free)
I call then free from mi 3gphone to fixed phones, to 3gphones and also even to computers having the correspondent software from Telme installed (Deskcall NG)
I tried fring with voipstunt and voipbuster, I could not find my Voip contactlist and was not convinced so I uninstalled it.
If someone gets a better result I would be happy to know it.
My telme nickname is 3gcedel in my Polaris and cedel in the deskcall if u want to call me. Or 1800-3501540 (Virtual SIM number if I'm not connected)
or 3g1800-3501540 (same as 3gcedel) when I'm connected in 3g

Strange. Mine always times out while connecting
Weird Problem
I've been trying to get my TC to make video calls to a Nokia 6280 and it's a no go. The weird part is that I also have a N70 and I can make a call from the Polaris to the N70 and also from the N70 to the 6280. So all my phones work but the Polaris and the 6280 don't work together. When I try I get a connection but no sound and no image. Any ideas? I already tried different roms and already switched sim cards.

Tried to install that, it won't install because it doesn't have a digital certificate, how can I fix that?
why don't you use native winmo VoIP support? .It's much better I think, and it's integrated with the dialer, there's no difference receiving a voip call than a normal call I love it!
I have both skype and fring. I do prefer this last one, with skype the only loudspeaker works.

Just look at this explanation!

Why can’t I download Skype Lite or Skype for Windows® phones?
Unfortunately, Skype Lite – a version of Skype for your mobile phone – and Skype for Windows phones are no longer available for download from our site.
We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows phones because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop.
We felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows phones were not offering the best possible Skype experience.

What is skype. I've heard about it for these past 2 years but never bother to check it out.
I just went to the official website and the only thing I got from it was People paying for a skype credit to use skype services such as "free calling" and not using mobile minutes.
Can someone tell me what use do you use skype on their HD2 for? It seems like its great but I am not convinced enough to try it out.
I can upload to u a skype cab. but I suggest to use fring, since it allows to speak with earclip. voice experience provided by skype.cab is very bizzarre...the only loadspeaker will work!
I have Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile which must be executed from your PC and an Active Sync connection and I have it installed on my Rhodium and it works great via Wi-Fi and wherever I have 3G. As just mentioned there is a CAB version available as well. I don't get this decision to make it unavailable to Windows Mobile users given that Verizon Wireless has Windows Mobile devices in their stable and if you get your hands on 3.0 for WM devices why no love for these devices?

What a shame... they cant develop good interface for winmo and they blame it easily on the OS itself
There is nothing the HD2 cant do what an iPhone does but there are a million things the HD2 can do but the iPhone can not

[NEWS FLASH] Skype No Longer Working With Fring

Received an email from Fring.
Hello fringsters,
As you may have noticed, Skype has blocked fring. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this Skype policy has unfairly caused you.
As loyal fring users, you deserve an explanation: Last week, following the surge in fring video calling traffic, fring service to Skype was temporarily reduced . Unfortunately, Skype and their legal team demanded not to restore your connectivity to Skype via fring.
Needless to say, we are very disappointed that Skype is now trying to muzzle competition, even at the expense of its own users.
While we regret Skype's decision to block fring, we are committed to continuing to provide you with market-leading innovation, to keep you in touch with your friends, wherever they are.
On fring you can freely use the best mobile over internet communication like video calling, calls and chat anywhere (3G/4G/WiFi) on any advanced Smartphone.
So, if you are frustrated like us with communication barriers, and are just looking for a fun and easy way to stay in touch with your friends on the go, tell them about fring andinvite your friends to join fring here
We appreciate your support and look forward to continuing to provide you with great mobile innovations.
Let freedom fring!
the fringTEAM.
That´s bad!!!
So Skype is gonna release an own Android version ?!
No idea who is telling the truth...
http://blogs.skype.com/en/
there is no truth to Fring’s claims that Skype has blocked it. Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own.

Fring probably wants users to use their service and not skype's service. But I have no sympathy for Skype. They choose to lock down their software to a carrier.
BTW, this is posted in wrong forum. it should be in general discussions.
now that thats done, does anyone know how I can make voip calls to a LANDLINE while I'm in another country? I'm having trouble finding something.
You can still use Nimbuzz to access Skype though I've had some voice delay/lag issues sometimes with it. It's always crystal clear, though.
Also, didn't Skype recently release a new API and SDK? Shouldn't some enterprising developer be able to use that to make something that doesn't suck?
I had a horrible experience with Nimbuzz, calls stopped receiving input apparently.
The person on the other line (also using Nimbuzz) would stop hearing what I said, and visa versa. This was really frustrating as it could happen randomly from 1 minute in or 5 mins in etc.
It would be working fine then just cut off suddenly, the call would keep running fine, just no audio...
Had to hang up and try again, but happened every time without fail, with both HSDPA and WiFi.
It's why I had to switch to fring, as Skype isn't available ¬¬
Well, i guess nimbuzz is the ONLY client to call landlines without the nightmare of sip settings in fring, no?

Wow yeah that's pretty bad.
Nimbuzz is definitely less than ideal, but I've never experience that with it. The audio quality has always been great, but as I mentioned, sometimes when I use it to use Skype to call a landline there gets to be a wicked delay, as if I was talking to someone on Mars or something. I was never sure if it was Nimbuzz's fault, or if it's because I'm calling from Thailand.

Boohoo, fring can't piggyback on skype.
While I don't like how skype is acting in regards to android and it's product, fring has to leg to stand to whine about not being able to use skype anymore.
Thems the breaks.
Skype has Andorid version but they will not release to public. It is because Skype with an agreement with Verizon Wireless and it will only avaiable to Verizon clients.
How about users outside US. Verizon has no service with another country such as Canada. What can we do? Skype and Verizon are doing something doesn't make sense.
If I live in US, I will never go to Verizon..............

[Q] Hutchison Three Skype for WP7 (Skype for 3 Network)

Hi,
As some skype users may know Hutchison Three UK (mobile operator) has its own version of Skype which doesn't need VoIP to call, they have their servers for calls, their version of Skype is free to use and even no need to top up your phone!
This Skype app is available on Symbian3, Symbian s60 and Android, Windows Mobile (hack), but I want this on WP7 as this is a really genius app, there are no dropouts no delays and no 3G/WiFI data is involved to make a voice call.
This skype doesn't drain a battery too, which is why it's a best solution if you talk with SkypeOut quite a lot. Basically it works like a calling card, each of your contacts has its own number with extension (Three mobile server numbers). So you just buy any supported phone (even a cheap one pay&go) and use Skype voice and chat. You doesn't have to top up eather.
My question is...
Who's actually developing this skype? I know on symbian s60 it was iSkoot, on Android it's joltid?
The thing is this Skype can probably work on WP7 devices without Mango update, as this solution is no VOIP..
What is the best way to get information about development? Any thoughts? Maybe someone can port it?
P.S. Verzion (US mobile operator) also has such skype and their servers.
Thanks
I've talk to Three and that's what they've told me: "They no longer use iskoot - Skype develop everything now." ThreeUK
As I can see they eather don't know about future development, or they stopped doing it.. In a last case it will be a shame, cause like I've said. This skype is so unique..
Perhaps someone can port this app to wp7? There are .sys .apk and java apps.
Main idea is to get algorithm of how it actually add extensions to your skype contacts.
Remember I've told in my post about three servers, so here's numbers: incoming: 07838333600 and outgoing: 07838333602. If you dial just them it gives you error. So I think there is extension adding automatically, but I'm not sure how it's done.. This is a three server numbers
