Hi all! this is in regard with our gps issues... I just want to share how i got the gps working at least I can say 99 percent accurate navigation, thru gps receiver module. I know its kinda stupid buying one but I was really happy with the results. I bought this gps receiver module in amazon.com(Globalsat BT-359). then downloaded the FREE bluetooth gps provider app in the market. Easy to pair and connect with our captivate. I have been using it now for a week and so far so good, locks and always on the spot.
p.s. the main reason I bought the module was for my nook color which btw works too, this prompted me to test it on the captivate which works wonders now with my navigation. Just sharing!

hey! I didnt know it has been posted in the accessories, anyway thanks for the link!
thats a workable solution for some
but you did NOT GET YOUR GPS working. You are simply using an alternate GPS device.

A search would have shown you that. Always do a search before starting a new thread.
to be fair that thread title is horrible from a descriptive standpoint.
I know that Garmin is not yet available for Android, generally.
What is the best alternative currently available? Both insofar as map and routing quality, as well as features, UI, etc...?
Google maps

No, that's not an alternative. Google Maps requires a signal to function, Garmin does not. I'm talking about a full, standalone GPS application.
My favorite is Sygic Aura.

Looking at it, it's got a lot of negative reviews, including some comments about it not working on an Atrix.
It also looks like they're pulling a bait and switch, calling it free, when allegedly, it's only a 7 day trial.
What's your experience with it?
Copilot is really good.

For a real offline navigation app i'd go for Navigon.
For a real offline mapping app i'd go for Locus.

I need both, which is what Garmin does, and what I'm looking for an alternative for.
Does anyone have experience with a multitude of these apps? Recommending the only one you've ever tried isn't a good way to get a feel for how they compare to one another.

Hi,
HD2-AndoidSD-Americandroid
i use google maps now...is realy good.
Offline:
Navigon....easy to handle but made some problems with the spreach if you use a bluetooth radio. Would have stayed on this if i would not need the bluetooth feature. Looks very "professional"
Igo...maps can not be transfered individualy (just complete packs)....not so nice
Copilot...quite good. Use it now if i need offline navigation.
Disadvantages:
- To much features and settings. You can almost change everything (which is not so good while driving)
- Voice sounds like the litte robot at buck rogers...
I think it all goes down to the maps. For example, for Eastern Europe, I use IGo with TopoMaps.
Why not stick with garmin?

Did you not read my first post? Because Garmin doesn't make a general mapping product for Android that isn't locked to their own device.
I bought sygic aura. He finds everything, points of interest, addresses, petrol stations, shops but my current location three blocks differs from the actual location. Even when I'm in the car nothing happens. My arrow is not with me. What is the problem here? is because the GPS is not designed for the HTC HD mini android?
greetings sven
If you look on the status page it says gps is not working

no there is something with my gps. it worked always no problems, but now for about 3 months my htc don't have any signal, even on WINDOWS MOBILE No signal. so i let it be , just wait 8 months than can i go for a new phone. . I now used my nokia N95 for navigation
Which WinMo ROM do you have? Have you changed it 3 months ago?
no , i had the lastest winmo version, now the oldest because i used a hard reset. so i guess i have on this moment the oldest. but i had this one a while ago : _HTC HD Mini_RUU_Photon_HTC_NLD_1.36.404.1_Radio_Signed_32.2803.05.06_0.63.05.36_Ship
For GPS issues, the first post in the tutorial "Install Android on HTC HD Mini" under the heading of known issues states in red font: GPS software in WM will not find satellites if you turn off GPS from location settings in Android
You should try the solution that is detailed in this thread. You have to follow this step even if you reflash any WM6.5 stock ROMS because reflashing won't fix the GPS issue. I know this from experience.
It is also discussed at length here
It is assumed you are using the latest build of Android for HD Mini. If there are continued issues, try a completely clean install (remove all old Android files from your SD card). If you still can't get GPS (both in Android and WM6.5), then maybe consider it is a hardware fault.

im sure it's a hardware fault. i have yesterday buy a adapt bluetooth gps and it is working fine. Fast fix even in the house. I think my internal GPS is dead. I used a lot . Almost 4 hours a day, 1 year long.

I guess drivers are different for a BT GPS when compared to the internal one. So if the BT works, it does not ay anything about the internal gps?

I would say if you do a hard reset in WiMo then you should see at least some satellites. Did you also try the app androsensor in Android? That tells you the status of all sensors, including the gps (i.e. location and number of sats). In that case you don't need a program like Sygic to check it. It works quite nice. Maybe worth checking?

looks bad. I understood you opened the device since you had issues with the proximity sensor? Are you sure you didnot damage any antenna cable or connector? I know there are 2 of them that are quite vulnerable, don't know where they are for.

I believe you are mistaken, and the wifi version has no GPS.
I have a bluetooth GPS receiver that I used with my Viewsonic g tablet but that required an "blueGPS" app to get it to work. I imagine with Touchpad may also require a third app to get it to work. An app that is likely not available for the Touchpad.
Are their any app for the Touchpad that can use a GPS?
There are apps in the hp-market. But i can't make out if they
all are real gps or if they need wlan/inet too.
Most of them also cost money.
I think i also read somewhere about using extern gps with that app
called usbpassthrough. But that app looks like some handy app, because
it didn't start in fullmode.
Ah, my apologies, my information was based off of a chart I googled last Saturday after purchase. It did not differentiate between the wifi and 3g/4g versions. I guess I can cross searching for a new GPS app off my to do list...

LOL... yeah, no need for a GPS app.
I wonder if there is a way to get my bluetooth GPS receiver to work with the Touchpad. I got a confirmation e-mail about 3 or 4 days later from HP.com but it hasn't shipped so I'm not certain I will actually get one.
Anyone got some info on this, with GPS this table would be such a great product.

Install Preware and get Navit. The app works fine in fullscreen and either orientation. Just let us know if you manage to get your dongle working.
I've got a Bluetooth dongle but the touchpad couldn't find it... I tried selecting OTHERS but nothing...wondering why...
EDIT: I found that we cannot any other device other than webOS, I suspect it's all about the stack, hopefully some developer out there can hack it.

Reading that ^ I tried an old cheapie chinese BT GPS receiver I have lying around, it found and connected in a couple of seconds. Now we just need some GPS software to make the right calls to it!
To both of you who've successfully paired your GPS dongles, does GPS show up as an available location service?
If not, it shouldn't be particularly difficult to make a patch.

Seriously now, the stack already supports SPP, and GPS communication is given as a code example!

No you can't do anything with it, none of the existing gps apps work because they are looking for an internal gps module, they don't look to bluetooth for it. What we would need is an app that works via the bluetooth stack? the way the old Palm Tx etc did.
Hi all,
Per specs on the official Samsung Website compass feature is not present, however it is present on Gear S.
Is hard to believe that it doesn't have compass. Can someone confirm?
Thanks,

Nope, no compass.
Further, only the 3G version has a GPS sensor.
I have 3G and it does have gps, also is there any way that when changing to another rom i dont have to do a factory reset every time?

Nope, and it's a glaring omission when there are boilerplate SOC devices providing GPS, accelerometer, compass, gyro, all in one.
Heck, the chip they used may even have a compass, they just didn't implement the driver. I doubt it, but it's certain a possibility. Having a root solution for the watch would open up investigating this.
the reason the S2 doesn't have a compass (or it's deactivated) is the magnetic mounting solution for the charger. If you put a (fairly strong) magnet right next to the magnetometer/compass sensor, it won't provide any useful data anyway.
I installed Compass GPS from the store. It works only when you moving. Hope the next gears will got magnetic sensor finally.
