What's up with carrier-customized devices? - Captivate General

So i just read engadget's review of the Epic (Sprint) and it seems to possess qualities that are lacking in other Samsung Galaxy S devices. Lucky Epic owners will have a front-facing camera, a rear-facing camera WITH LED flash, a slide out keyboard, and the ability to customize when the capacitive button back-lighting goes out. I'm sure I left a few things out but why would Samsung produce several variants of the same phone for different carriers? Why not produce one phone and distribute it that way? I know the Epic is $50 more, but I'm sure they can be picked up for cheaper.

samsung epic is Galaxy S pro
the other three is just standard Galaxy S

Huh never saw that before but thanks for the heads up. I'm still bitter about some of those features

hmm
really the only feature that interested me out of the ones you said was keyboard and the backlights, cuz the sgs cam isnt that good, and on-phone flashes are really pretty bad for lighting. it has all the same hardspecs right? proc, screen, etc?
however if its thicker i wouldnt say its worth it at all

Why buy a captivate?

Been researching phones again and comparing the Sammy's to the iphone to the Droid.
When i look at smartphones on ATTs page by clicking the link,
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/pda-phones-smartphones.jsp
i see that the order of phones is confusing with the exception of APPLE phones being at the top. When you sort by customer rating, the iphones sink to the bottom since ATT can't post their ratings. it's obvious that ATT doesnt advertixe the captivate much. You're still bound to the ATT network, the new limited data plans, and the expensive Early termination FEE. Believe it or not, i want to get this phone but the only reason i have so far is that it gets the best reception at work. I see no other advantages.
So i figure this is the captivate forum, please give me reasons to buy this phone over say the vibrant, or the upcoming Epic, or even ATT's own iphone 4.

Let's just say, SGS currently offers nearly everything at the top of the market.
BUT, it would NOT be future proof. Technology advances regardless of any economical drawbacks, there WILL be better phones out there in the future.
Screen - debatable with iPhone4's screen
This really is a territory where personal preference will determine which the better screen will be, the differences are that minuscule.

iPhone4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super Amoled
CPU/GPU - YES YES YES. THREE times the speed of today's smartphone.
Coolermaster
Hummingbird vs. Snapdragon: The 1 GHz Smartphone Showdown
OS - Debatable so i wouldn't want to get into this. (but might i add this? the community behind android, let alone other OS, has an advantage of being futuristic-proof because of the regular tweets and mods)
Camera - 5mp, pretty darn low comparatively to other smartphones but it's adequate/satisfying after seeing the vids/pics
For me, I would certainly pick SGS. This is a bad place to ask for our opinon, it's a SGS dedicated section! (Trust me, you won't regret it. The screen is the dealbreaker)

Nice sliding usb port.
Cool push down opening of the battery door.

Wait, the Captivate supports the wireless hotspot too, doesn't it?
yea, but you can't get it unless you turn airplane mode on, then flip on wifi to get to the market to d/l and install the app.
Same for other tethering applications.

Well i went and bought one. Figured for a 30 day trial, wouldn't hurt.
So far my very quick impression vs. the Tmobile i had for 2 weeks:
*soft keys at the bottom appear to be much more dim than the tmobile.
*overall, more slugish than the tmobile
*when i went to the network settings to see some things, it appears that whole chunks of the settings menu have dissapeared from the standard samsung stuff.
*Better reception (that is why i went with ATT)
*no navigation, not sure where google nav is. But loved that app on Evo and Vibrant.
*I like the back better, i like the front on the Vibrant better.
*plugging usb cable seems more difficult.
*Volume rocker on Captivate is nicer

Google Navigation is on the Captivate. You just have to update Google maps in the market.
Using a launcher like LauncherPro or ADW will speed up the Captivate a LOT.
Well, why should you buy one?? Hopefully because you want one. Just try out all the phones and get the one you like the best. Whether its iphone4, Galaxy S, or Droid X. They're all good phones, the cream of the crop available right now. But in two months who knows what will be available.

-I don't need it superbright, but its so dim, it almost looks like its shorting out. They flicker when you touch them too, which adds to the shorting out "effect"
-sluggish, parts of it are just slow. moving from screen to screen, etc.. again, this is compared to the tmobile vibrant.
missing things.
->settings>mobile networks >network operators. This is only default setup here. ON the tmobile, there were 4 options here, allowing to choose manual/auto, network chooser, and another option. The "default setup" doesn't even work for me. There are other areas that i've noticed have been trimmed too.

You know, there are many times in my life where i've met someone with a question or statement that I thought was dumb or even inappropriate. But with maturity, i've learned to not engage, seeing as that would not foster anything positive from it. If a disparaging remark is somehow needed, then temper it with something useful like a search link.
Before you respond, ask yourself what you are contributing. Is it positive?
Yes, this means, don't respond to this. I hope it helps you out.

[Q] Samsung Glaxy S I9000T or HTC Inspire 4G?

Sorry if this question does not belong here,
I'm getting a new phone soon but it has become very difficult for me to decide wich one I'm going to finally get. My two options are the Galaxy S I9000T or the HTC Inspire 4G. Now this are the details:
I'm concerned about the battery life on the Inspire but I love the camera and the larger screen.
On the other hand, I love the Galaxy S image quality and front camera but the 5Mpx camera and no flash make me think about it
In my Country there are no plans yet to implement 4G so this is not a feature I worry about.
The Galaxy S model is now more than a year old and there is even a Galaxy S2, the inspire was released this year
I need to sleep again so please give me a hand, I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have
Thanks in advance
I have had both, several times
I found the 5MP camera on the Galaxy S far superior to the 8MP unit on the Inspire/DHD. Not having a flash can be a let-down, but the better image and video quality make up for it I think. The photos look much better at full resolution, decent detail and good colour.
If you're not an extremely heavy user, you can get the better part of two days from the DHD. I found battery life about par for both devices, without modifying anything (straight out of the box).
Personally, I found the colours far too distracting on the Galaxy S. The screen is nice and the blacks are truly black, but everything else just seemed a bit too saturated for my liking. If you're into bright colours though, you'll love it. Just make sure you don't use a white background!
As for build quality, the Galaxy S is all cheap glossy plastic, while the DHD is Aluminium and plastic. The DHD battery flap/door is horrible to remove and replace. The Galaxy S really needs a case to keep it looking nice (on second thought, they both do). The Galaxy S is lighter, so if you don't like to feel too much weight in your pocket it's a better bet.
I'll hang around and see what you decide, if you had any other questions you can post here or drop me a PM
Good luck!
I own a Samsung Galaxy S, so far I have enjoyed it.
The only annoying thing is the sweep glass to unlock screen, which can be a bit of a pain if you try to sweep it too quickly or not far enough. But it's been compatible, reliable and able to cope with anything I've thrown at it so far. I also dropped it about 2-3ft onto solid concrete without any damage, maybe a couple of small scratches on the back, but I wouldn't suggest doing this regularly
I've also rooted and flashed it without any hiccups if your interested in doing that.
Camera? then Galaxy S.
My wife has Galaxy S because she wanted a good camera phone.
Except for not having shutter button, Galaxy S's camera is the best
I have ever tried. Even under dim lighting, it's better than 8MP camera with LED flash.
Samsung even took the HD commercial film for their GalaxyTab with
Galaxy Ss. You can check the video quality here in the Youtube link.
Search "galaxytab commercial yuna kim" in Youtube.
(I cannot put the outside URL since I am a new member)
I own a Samsung Galaxy S, but as I do not know much about HTC Inspire 4G I will not vote.
Generally I am quite satisfied with my device, the only problem being that although I do not use the phone very much, and brightness is set on very low, the battery almost dies at the end of one work day. I think that it is me doing something wrong, though.
Thanx for all our answers and advices, Im still watching some YouTube reviews before I take my final desition (and get all the money I need $1'020.000 Colombian pesos)

i love the galaxy s and all the modding capabilites. performance is great. THAT BEING SAID, i would friggin love to have a flash on the camera. dont really care about front facing camera but its cool i guess. as long as the inspire can be rooted and everything, maybe i'd go with that
Speaking of camera flash, I still never photographed anything serious at night, but last night I tried the night scene mod with my Samsung Galaxy S and the result seemed very good. As long as there is some light source the photos are bright enough.
Of course if you photographed in total or almost complete darkness you'd need a flash, but how often does it happen? You usually need a flash when you photograph at night with weak artificial light around, and the night scene settings takes care of that.

[Q] Broke my galaxy s2... what phone should I buy?

So my Galaxy S2 got hit by a wave, and after a bit of isoproponal the phone boots but the screen doesnt work
So I'm wondering where to go from here. I've had a look at the Galaxy Nexus, and on paper it doesn't seem that great. Going from an 8MP camera to a 5MP camera just so I can have ICS doesn't seem like a good trade off, especially when the SGS2 is getting ICS anyway.
Is there something I'm missing here? And are there any upcoming devices that would be worth waiting for?
Honestly I'm a little dissapointed in the Android lineup at the moment. Every phone seems to be the same, with all the exy ones having 1.2ghz (or more) CPU and HD video recording, which is awesome, don't get me wrong. But I've gone back to my old Nokia N900 which has features like manual focus in photos and being able to remotely shutter my Digital SLR, which are amazing features. But as Nokia doesn't support it anymore and the OS is a bit clunky, I'm thinking about getting something else......
So...thoughts?
Well hopefully the Samsung SGSIII is coming out the first half of this year so that would be worth the wait if you liked the SGSII. Other vendors should be launching new phones very soon with CES and MWC coming up.
Galaxy Nexus seems good to me.
Stock 4.0.x right out of the gate, HD screen, good sensor for a 5MP camera (remember, megapixel count isn't everything), no capacitive buttons, curved display is amazingly eye-easing (to me at least), and I'm sure plenty of devs across the world will be developing for it quickly. Why not? It's the king of Android.
If you can - maybe consider the Droid RAZR too. I'm not a fan of the stock ROM but of course you wouldn't be on XDA if you weren't looking for something better than the usual. Super thin, 8MP shooter, Kevlar made, very light, seems like a great phone to me too.
Those are my top two choices, if I had my pick. EVO 3D for now.
If nothing else sounds good - wait on CES for all the April/May announcements and releases.

Thanks for that. What about the gorilla glass on the SGS2? Is the Nexus going to scratch easier?
Also did you mean to say that megapixels "isn't" everything?
I don't think I'll be truly happy until I get a phone thats like the Nexus with a FM transmitter and IRda... and physical keyboard

It's true that megapixels isn't everything. But the SGS2 does have a great hardware set that it fully capable of doing what the Galaxy Nexus can do.
I get zero shutter delay with Camera FX from the market without a problem and I'm currently running an acceptable daily alpha of CM9 ICS 4.03.
WARNING. ICS is really really addicting. You won't want to go back
I'd stick with getting another SGS2 or get a Galaxy Nexus. Both will retain their value well. I'd be selling this year to get something better.
I have a feeling it is going to be a big year for hardware innovation
In terms of cameras in general, megapixels don't mean everything, but with a mobile sensor, there is only so much you can do with it, that megapixels do mean the quality, more or less now. Anyways, personally I would say just go to a store and try out some phones if you can. If you can wait I'd say the sgs 3, if you can't i'd recommend the sgs 2, but since you already had one and experienced it, maybe you should try something else like the razr or another OS persay, like WP7.

I think the Galaxy Nexus has the proprietary 'reinforced' glass or something, the equivalent of Gorilla glass. I wouldn't worry there.
Yeah I meant to say isn't haha... oops!
Eww physical keyboard... can't do it! Thickens the phone too much. And when keys stop working = not good. Yuck.
Razr... Should get ICS soon imo!

Why did you pick the S4 over the HTC One, Note II, or Optimus G Pro?

Just wondering why everyone chose the S4 over the main competition, the HTC One, and the phablet Note II and Optimus G Pro.
Myself, i was happy with my GS3, and my folks wanted new phones (still rockin iPhone 3Gs) and made us a deal for our GS3's and we got GS4's (they are on our plan).
My reasons are perhaps a bit different than most... I work in TV/film, and have very good eyesight; i could easily see the PenTile fuzz effect on the GS3 screen, and it was VERY obvious on the Atrix 4G. I always opted for the highest PPI monitors for equipment, and while the GS3 was GOOD, it wasn't great.
1080P - Full HD, even if its on a tiny screen, is great as i can zoom in to show client/etc detail on 2k/4k i've shot.
Color Modes - i use 'Movie' exclusively as it is basically sRGB
sRGB - standard Rec.709 gamut/colorspace - again for showing clients what their/my content looks like very close as on a proper monitor
IR Blaster - I have remotes everywhere; for HDSLR's, reciever/amp/DAC's, Windows Media PC's, stereo's, TV's, etc; i LOVE the IR blaster.
Sensors - Hygrometer/Thermometer/Magnetometer/Barometer, i actually use these a lot for dumb things, but they work and its a plus
Battery - removable/replaceable
NFC - I use NFC tags a lot (car mode, play a playlist while im cooking/cleaning WITHOUT mucking up phone screen
Wireless charging - Had it in the S3 with NFC working, looking forwards to it with the GS4. Even wired one in the misc tray in my car and GF's SUV
Color - Waited for white to come out as almost everything i own is white. Im a mobile nudist
SD expansion - I usually have 2 or 3 64GB MicroSD cards in my wallet with other stuff on them; pics/demo reel, movies, music, etc. I like having my content stored LOCALLY.
Devs - Also figured it would have strongest support of all 4 i had considered
Reasons i didn't go with the HTC One
Sealed unit, no Ext SD, and i think its really ugly aesthetically.
Reasons i didn't go with the LG Optimus Pro
too big (i can JUST reach across the S4 screen one-handed)
Reasons i didn't go with the Note II
Low PPI screen (lower than GS3 and actually lower than the 960x540 QHD, 4" Atrix 4G)
No IR blaster
too big
What are your reasons? I do miss the Atrix 4G fingerprint sensor. A LOT. That thing was *****in, and accurate; no need to look or fumble, just press power and swipe. One thing i wish the GS4 had.
For me, it came down to the HTC One and the S4. I know all about HTC nice build materials, and shoddy quality and that played into my decision. More importantly, the screen size sealed my decision. The screen and bezels are perfectly done on the S4 while the screen looks a lot smaller than it is on the HTC.
Also, the home button on top annoys me.
It's an impressive device, though and may eventually get one.
Edit: after the purchase, I'm really liking the removable battery too

My girlfriend has the HTC One, and I had it too but returned it for a 32GB S4.
Resons for the S4:
Colors: you can adjust the colors to whatever you want, and soon perseus will be out of 'beta' for the i9500 and we can have 100% color gamut replication, literally changing all the colors around if you want. I personally always like Standard, I don't know why maybe because it just pops out. But today im going to try movie and see if I stay with that as my monitor is calibrated at adobeRGB spec. We'll see.
Bezel: It's like... not there. I have a nice slim case that doesnt protrude at all but im too worried about it at this point to use it haha.
Buttons: Coming from an iPhone 5... home button is the best.
Development: It'll be popular for years. I mean look at the S2 forum.
Reasons I liked the HTC one:
Speakers: self explanatory.
Screen: No color bleeding and such but the blacks weren't as nice.
Build: Aluminium is piece of mind, albeit a thick phone IMO.
Optimus G Pro: Used it in store, amazing screen; LG sucks with updates so I was like hell no... Also camera is mediocre at best.
I'm getting the s4 tomorrow for the following reasons: external sd storage, removable battery, and the screen size. I'm not really into phablets because it would feel too big in my pocket. My nexus 7 is fine if i need a bigger screen. Coming from the HTC One xl and i literally have no space left with the 16gb. Have to keep my titanium back up and movies on a usb. Getting the 32gb version as well as putting in a 32 gb mirco sd in it. Sense vs touchwiz? I would choose touchwiz over sense coming from a poor experience i had with sense on the htc one xl. Definitely AOSP over those two though

You will love movie mode. It takes a couple days to get used to come from other modes, but now even the standard mode looks like crap compared to movie. P.s. Movie mode has been highly rated by a couple of professional display reviewers.

I am a simple man. I chose the S4 because I had the S2, and because it had a removable battery and sd card slot.
I went with the s4 after seeing that commercial where the lady's phone is ringing and she turned it over to ignore the call. I was like wow, I want that.
Reasons why I chose the S4 over the HTC One? Simple, it's more practical and more ideal for productivity and long road trips.
- I like the 1080p AMOLED screen to the SLCD 3 on the HTC One. Richer colors or more realistic ones on the former [choices]
- Better battery life
- Removable battery for further life
- SD Card, more potential capacity [you can root and mesh your internal and external storage for applications/games]
- More pleasant aesthetics
- Preferred UI
- More software offerings [some gimmicks, some useful, but at least they're offered to the consumer]
- Bigger display on the same sized body as the HTC One
- Faster RAM [LDDR3 vs LDDR2]
- Capacitive touch screen works with gloves [great for the winter]
- Won't damage as badly as the metal chassie on the One over time from wear and tear
I used a HTC One for a week, I end up exchanging it for a Galaxy S4 because the 4MP Camera couldn't get enough details for my needs & the battery life wasn't as good as GS4..
As small as it may seem I needed a physical button. Lol.

Two words...that screen. I came from owning nothing but Nexus devices the last two years. I had the chance to fall in love with the Super AMOLED screens on the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, and the incredible PLS display on those Nexus 10. What do they all have in common? Samsung. The screen on the Nexus 4 is nice, but once you're used to Samsung's screens, nothing else quite compares.
After being on nothing but stock Android for two years, I have to say that Touchwiz has really impressed me as well. I feel like, I'm cheating on a girlfriend or something when I say that, but it's true. Touchwiz has a fair number of things that I wish Google would implement into the stock UI and UX.
Overall, I'm very happy with this phone. I just hope that AT&T actually allows Samsung to keep this phone up to date. AT&T and T-Mobile are both the worst when it comes to updates. With Verizon and Sprint, the updates may take time to go through approvals and testing, but they will eventually be released. AT&T and T-Mobile on the other hand are known to actually tell manufacturers that they're going to pass on an update made available to them. Cases in point:
1. T-Mobile passed on the Windows Phone 7.8 update for the Lumia 710 even though Nokia made it available.
2. T-Mobile passed on the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG G2X even though LG made it available.
3. AT&T still has not allowed Samsung to release Jelly Bean for the original Galaxy S2 I777 model, even though they allowed it for the Skyrocket.
4. AT&T still has not allowed Samsung to release the Galaxy S3 update that includes the premium suite of GS4 features. Now that Verizon approved the update this week, AT&T is the only major carrier left who hasn't allowed the update to happen.
5. AT&T's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is the only variant left worldwide (I believe) that has not received an update to Jelly Bean.
Don't even get me started on what AT&T did to block and hold off the Android 2.2 update for the Dell Streak 5. Anyway, you see my point. If Samsung keeps up their amazing sales momentum, you figure they will soon have enough clout to strongarm carriers into handling updates themselves like Apple does.
Pending update issues aside, this phone is simply amazing. For leaving stock Android for a skin, I couldn't be happier.
I had an HTC One, while I really enjoyed sense and everything the phone offered I could not help but feed my curiosity. I gave my wife the One and used her upgrade to get the 4. I would be lying if I said I got the 4 for anything other than running stock Android when the Galaxy S4 nexus edition comes out. So far I like the screen size and phone size more than the One, I cannot wait to see how this beast phone runs stock Android!!

S7 Edge Selfie Camera - No Face contours

We got the S7 Edge yesterday for my gf. She really likes it, especially the camera. But the Selfie Camera is a whole different thing. When we make a picture with it, a traditional Selfie, it looks kinda without contours. Espresso face shots show not many contours whatsoever, it all looks too flat and clean. When you do a face shot with the main camera, all is fine.
In the Selfie mode, there are some settings for things like that, but they are not even activated or used. So why does the Selfie cam shoot so washed out face shots without any real contours whatsoever?
I guess the phone isn't as great as people say. Because myself coming from the Samsung Note series for the last years (and right now with an iPhone), I never noticed anything like that on any of my previous devices. Anyone else also has that problem?
Thx

the front facing camera sucks, period. there's focus and softening issues hardcore that samsung needs to fix. my note 4 ffc was 100 percent better than this one.

I had a Note 4 once myself, and the FFC for sure was better than this. Also the too sensitive display (edges especially), this phone starts with a lot of issues. Not sure id it's really worth keeping, considering the price. For that I expected more, not just good hardware specs. Seems Samsung only concentrates only on putting bigger and better hardware into their devices these days. Kinda only the obvious, but doesn't care much about details. I myself recently, after over many years, switched to iPhone 6S Plus. And although i miss some freedom, things i could configure much more, and even if some things in the S7 might be better in certain situations, its the overall package that makes me glad I got that and didn't buy the S7 for myself. The camera thingy might be what keeps my gf from really enjoying this phone atm. And yes, maybe Samsung fixes that, but with my history of Samsung and their devices (and updates), until they fix these things my gf also won't care about it anymore and probably gotten herself another phone.
