Hi all,
Just wondering if theres an app that allows your location on latitude to be refreshed, every 5 minutes for example.
I've found an app for the iphone its called playnice just wondering if there was something similar for androids?
Because to update your location on latitude you have to keep going into it.
Thanks
Hi - That would be a good tool.. however.. latitude does update your location without going into it.. I just can't quite figure out what triggers the update.. I switched it on on my wifes phone and when she was out the other night it did update - I think it might update when you use the phone - she texted me, and then I saw where her new, approximate location was... not GPS accurate.. but within a few 10's of feet.
Hi mate, thanks for the reply iv set it to auto update and it just doesnt update lol.
Only when i go into the application, Never mind maybe this is something that could be put together for the future?
Mine auto updates regularly. Have you made sure that 'Wireless Networks' is checked in the settings>>location menu??

IGNORE ME!!! Waste of a post, seems this is not only not a new idea, but already implemented (just not used apparently).
I know this might not be the best place to put this but I do not know an official way to suggest this to google.
Background info: I have been testing out latitude and it has been failing. I spent a few hours (really) reading a forum on google about other users having the same problems (where it sometimes will not update your location for hours or days at a time). I started thinking what if there was an api to get the location instead of a direct gps read.
My idea is what if every time an app got a gps lock if the OS were to record it in a db somewhere as "last known location" (lkl from here on) and "last location time" (llt). Apps that need an immediate fix (maps) could turn on the gps and get it (which would then update the lkl and llt), but apps that need a recent location (locale, latitude, google local search etc) could check the llt and see if it is recent enough for them. If for example, locale needed a lkl from 5 minutes or less it could check to see if one is recent enough to use. If not it could turn on gps and get one. If so, it would use the lkl that was recorded and be done. In this example one gps location fix every 5 minutes could satisfy 20 different apps, with the app that needs the most recent updates doing most of the polling. For example, say most of your apps want a 30 minute llt but locale wants a 5 minute llt. Locale would probably be doing all of the polling, but the rest of the apps would not need to since 5 minutes is recent enough for them. This could potentially save battery and make apps like latitude work better since not all apps need an exact fix.
I know this was long and might not fit in here, but I figured if I put it here maybe someone of importance (or someone who knows the right people) could pass it on. It is one of those things that I would forget if I do not get it out.
This is already built into the Android APIs. You can get the last location known to the device, the time of the location, for any of the location providers.
yeah, was just talking to someone who told me the same thing. waste of 10 minutes of my life. I am a little pissed now that I know latitude and other apps could be using this and are not.
I just got my brand NEW Asus TF 16GB from Amazon. I did the update first.
Then I noticed that it displays the wrong location in the weather widget.
I have GPS, Wifi and Google location tracking enabled.
Anyone else got the wrong location with this Tablet? Any way to get it work properly? I have not tried a different location either.
oh and google map app shows the correct location so I guess it knows where it is. Strange...
I know I can set it manually but I would like to know if it can be fixed to work in auto mode.
Any how this is a great site full of TF information.
Thanks in advance...
VeeKay
yeah, I hope there is a fix for this.
Mine also pinpoints me fine on the map.
But, weather widget says i'm in a small community, two cities away.
And a search to enter location manually, finds my city no problem.
Of course I prefer to leave it on AUTO.
Tap the weather widget and you can set your location manually, or force it to refresh.
I manually set mine to my location, then turned it back to automatic and it's been fine since.
Thanks for the tip
I tried that but unfortunately it didn't work. It goes back to the wrong location
I all of a sudden started having this issue. When i'm at home it says that i'm in a city that's more than 40 miles away which I've never even traveled near with my TF.
I've tried deleting the widget, checking google maps, and still it puts me in the wrong location.
This started happening less than a week ago.
Mine has said "Asahi ku" since I got it... I have no idea where that is.
Does anyone have an alternate GPS program installed like Locus?
I uninstalled that and it looks to be working fine now.

Ok I spoke prematurely.
If I go into Google maps, it places me in the right location but for some reason, starts out in the location 40 miles away.
The Asus widget seems to be broken.
I picked up a Charge last Friday and rooted it the next day. However, both before and after the root (to gummycharged) the network location functionality was broken. Maps would only give me a location if GPS was enabled; trying to get one with GPS off gives a "Please enable a My Location source in system settings" popup even though "VZW Location services" is checked. And nevermind the legal message that comes up every time GPS is enabled...
So the question is, did I break something? I've searched for stuff all day, and though there was some stuff about things being broken with that function on other devices around the end of last year, I haven't seen anything since. I'm wondering if I should just wait for a gingerbread ROM to come along and install that to see if that fixes things...
Update: I have tried copying in a networklocation.apk file from another ROM into my system/app folder, but still no luck. I don't understand why it won't even try to use the network location. I even found the NetWork Location app, which seems to be working just fine and giving me lat/long. It just doesn't work for maps.
VZW Location Services isn't a source that google maps (or pretty much any other program on your phone) can access. That service is only for Verizon Navigator (which is $10/mo and doesn't provide much that Google Maps gives you for free).
So, you have to enable one of the other location services, either the GPS or the google location services.
Google wrote the message that "Please enable a My Location source in system settings" but Verizon added the menu entry for their location services after that. That's why it sounds like checking the Verizon box should make maps work, but it doesn't.
Ah, that makes some sense now. *smacks forehead*
So, I've checked the Google box, and now I don't get the message any more, but it still won't give me a location even after rebooting.
Should I go back and install the regular gummycharged mod? I think my screwing around with networklocation.apk may have actually broken it...
EDIT: IT WORKS!!! Went back, reinstalled gummycharged, and it f'ing works!
You, sir, are The Man. Or The Woman, as the case may be.
Does anyone know if theres a way to prevent latitude from updating on my tablet?
I don't always have it with me, but I always have my phone with me and I do want it updating on there.
The issue I'm running into is if I disable the detecting of my location on the tablet, that setting transfers over to phone as well.
Its akin to leaving my browser open on latitude on my computer when its at home, itll update periodically and show the wrong location. If the browser is closed, it doesnt update but even if maps is closed on the tablet, it still auto updates my location every so often.
Thanks for any help.
My Nexus 5 running 4.4.4 has starting acting strangely this morning with anything to do with location services.
Only started this morning when I went to show a colleague the Waze app. Said my current location is Haworth, Yorkshire!?! I am actually at Watford Junction station Hertfordshire! Lol!
Even tried Google Now navigation and said 212 miles to home!!! So it remembers where I live?
I have never been to Haworth, let alone being there now.
Have tried rebooting phone, indoors and outdoors, turning off all location services and it is still showing wrong location?
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried in a completely different location, or go into Location settings and set it to Device only to force GPS and wait for a fix. It might just be your phone is defaulting to Wi-Fi location, and a new access point has appeared near to you that used to be in North Yorkshire!

Phil

Tried device GPS only, and not GPS/data/wifi, and picking me up fine. GPS on its own, mobile network on its own, both work fine, but not the 2 together?
It is very strange as it only started happening this week and only when I go into the mess/break room at Watford Junction station. And always Haworth! But now, as soon as I step out of the door, it sorts itself out within a minute or 2. But it does happens every time I go into there now! There is a wifi signal at work, but cannot pick it up in the mess room, so can't be that interfering?
It is not a biggy as not as if I need a satnav to drive my train! lol! And to see the weather, I look out of the door (no windows!)
