[Review] TweetDeck Beta Launches – Best Android Twitter App? - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

As you might have heard, TweetDeck has released its Twitter app for Android after what seems to be ages of development, at least for me, as I’ve been dying for this. Twidroyd has long been, at least in functionality, best Twitter app for Android, but TweetDeck hopes to change that by bringing the best Twitter app for PC to Android. Interestingly, its not a direct port of their iPhone app, rather, its been built from the ground to up to showcase the changes that TweetDeck hopes to roll out across its other platforms. I’ve gotta say, its looking great, but not quite there yet. Check out the video for a demo of the great functionality as well as the missing functionality. All in all, though, great job TweetDeck.

Tweetdeck is nice, the font size is annoying though

Tried it did not like it my self not enough options IMHO
from the apple store loling

Naw it's definitely not the best quite yet. It's lacking A LOT feature wise but it's on the right track. It's been the main one I've used since it came out yesterday. Just might replace my Twitter for Android in the end.

TweedDeck desktop is awesome. Can't beat it imo. TweedDeck for Android... another story. As someone said above, they have a long ways to go. ALTHO one think I do like, is the smoothness of the app. Thats all tho... I'm sure over time it will get better, but they have lots of catching up to do.

Well said. Thats exactly how I feel. The app is really smooth and I like that it brings you back where you left off in every column, but they've got a lot of work to do. But with their apps for other platforms, I know they can do it.

What's wrong with TweetCaster?

Not bad....
I dig it. It's not fully featured, but it is really smooth. I'll keep it to test it out for now, but I'm not getting rid of my primary twitter/fb apps. I'll keep those and reserve judgment on this app until the official release is out.

Don't complain
To all of you that complains about Tweetdeck for Android. It's still beta and not the finished application. I can assure you there is frantic activity over at Tweetdeck support, and I don't doubt that this will be a killer app

I think it kinda sucks at least right now, all the other Twitter apps I've tried are better and actually have features. And it won't stop sending Twitter notifications which I don't want as it's constant and annoying. Oh and it's ugly..haha. I'm sure it will get better though. I like Twicca myself.

In the app, hit Menu>>Manage Columns and turn off the notifications you dont want

TweetCaster lets you to disable all background notifications.

tweetcaster is really everyone main twitter app? over twidroyd pro and toutier?
i liking tweetdeck so far.. it is lacking some options.. but i like seeing my fb/tweets in one column. twidroyd is my fallback.

Thanks to whoever told me how to turn off notifications. I wasn't getting them then randomly this morning they started coming in. I just use Pure Messenger to read FB/tweets in one column and open Twicca/Facebook from Pure Messenger to post something. I like it because it's a widget. Is Tweetdeck going to put out a widget? I didn't notice one looking through my widgets.

What is up with LauncherPro?

I love it, paid for it, and use it every day. Why can't he keep his customers and the community updated on progress? How hard is it to post updates on the website? I'm sure he has time to do it more than once a month. Anyone else agree? Just kinda frustrating...

LPP all ready has **** loads of functionality runs fast and smooth (for me at least). It only had abig update quite recently.
I can't say for certain but I imagine a lot of time and effort goes in to getting apps ready for us peeps that have no coding or dev knowledge.

Right now Fede is actually re-coding the entire launcher from the ground up, so don't expect any new features or anything until that gets finished. The transitions update was mainly to keep the competition with ADW EX.
Also as the launcher is (for most people, myself included) flawless, it isn't like he needs to release bug fixes or anything.

I have no problem with him or the program. He teases an update in a week on the website and then we get nothing for a month. Is one line that hard? I know he is recoding the entire program, but customer service is key. If he wants to make money and thrive, he needs to keep his people in the loop.

Right now, the only thing LP has on ADW is custom docks. If LP would incorporate drawer themes like ADW does, it'd be perfect IMO.
If you are not happy, feel free to switch to another Launcher
I think he is not out to make money, if you notice the free version has got all the features except LPP widgets. Why don't you send him an email rather than vent your anger here (probably he won't read this anyway)?

I switched from LPP after his last sabbatical of updates. He felt pressure from ADW when those videos about the transitions came out, and hadn't had an update for two months.so he put out a "bug fixes and new drawer" thing or whatnot. Then ADW came out with their update right after with transitions. Then Fede came out with a small update with the transitions. Only to be topped by ADW with the ability to customize your dock.
Only thing that HONESTLY is saving Fede...is the widgets. It's the only thing people talk about in the threads, the market, his site, are those. And I'm sure if signals23 wasn't theming them..people would be over them as well.
Bottom line [not judging either], if ADW gets Colorize to work strictly for them [since lpp wont] between those widgets..and adw will simply trump lpp. Theres not much Fede can "rewrite"..honestly. In November he started the rewrite.. December said it'd be here before christmas... Pushed it to new years. Then MLK weekend. Then February. Well..it's almost March...

He certainly got a point there. I am too a customer of LPP and I really love this Launcher because of the smoothness, the Widgets and everything. Always fall back to LPP. But I feel pressure coming from ADW, and GO Launcher seems to develop quite good as well, on top this one is free.
The last few Updates to LPP were rather minimal and not really satisfying. Sure, transitions are a nice addition, but oh well... The Widgets certainly could use a touchup / improvements, whilst the customizabilty needs more variations as well as the App Drawer.
I would LOVE to see the final product of Fede with his rewrite. I am 100% certain that it will kick ass, but that only makes it harder for me to wait.
Not sure why this is pointless. Just as pointless as the "What's your favorite app" threads that pollute this forum. I can vent just liked anyone else. Just as you did...

This is absolutely pointless, just like the "What's your favorite app" threads are absolutely pointless and people like you need a journal to write in or something.
No one cares what you think, and especially no one wants to hear your whining. No one cares what your favorite app is either or whether you like chocolate versus vanilla.
If someone has something constructive and worth while to discuss, that's perfectly fine, but when it comes to *****ing, whining, and random, meaningless opinions and/or preferences, no one cares.
Saying its okay for you to do it because everyone else does is no excuse. Like your mother said, If everyone else jumps off a bridge are you going to do it too?

ADW Ex now has custom docks. At this point, it's not so much features that make the launcher decision, it's the user's preference. Personally, I like LPP's implementation of dock scrolling better than ADW's. The widget implementation is better looking on LPP, as well. Even the screen animations look smoother and better put together on LPP, even though they're a new feature.
So we'll come to a point where features will be identical, but it looks like people will be paying attention to which one has the more solid programing rather than features.
LPP is one of the best launcher out there.. if you dont like it, you can simply switch to another..
LPP is great. I too am very eager to see the new rewrite, but I understand it takes time to get finished. I'd rather Fede spent the time making it as awesome as it can be (and I have faith that it will be quite awesome) than pushing it out as fast as he can.
That being said I would love to get a somewhat accurate idea of a release date or even a feature list... but yeah, should be good when it's ready.
I used to be a LPP fanboy too until I got caught up in too many unkept promises. Might as well just do like other app developers and not promise anything and just surprise us with an update in the market.
Home replacements and apps like these shouldn't have "changelogs"
The only thing stopping me from leaving LPP is the Friend widget and the calender. Pure Calender does not have that same view where you can flick to the next month, and it's ugly. Colorize does not have a combined view of facebook and twitter.
LPP's performance is top notch, and I don't need much more from a launcher than that. The widget resizing and the dock options are nice too. I haven't really used ADW much, but whenever I had to use it initially after installing a new version of CyanogenMod, the thing was always sluggish.
I don't know, I paid for what I got, and I don't mind if there's no new feature updates. Considering the value I got for LPP, I don't mind if there are no further feature updates.

Then quit *****ing... it's pretty simple. If you can't do a better job then how are you going to tell him how to do something you clearly have no knowledge of?
It's not like LauncherPro is this man's main source of income. I'm pretty sure he's got a life outside of writing an app that may take priority (like almost every other dev/coder/developer).
If you're unhappy then switch launchers.
Launcher Pro has (last i check but i could be wrong since i don't specifically read up on changes for ADW Ex) another advantage over ADW Ex that keeps me loyal besides the calender widget.
It's the ability to hide apps in the app drawer. That definately helps to keeps my app drawer neat and tidy.

SPB mobile shell 5.0 beta

I have it working on my Droid x its awesome. But some apps that came with it don't work. Other than that the 3d ui looks great. Runs great. Is anyone else using this app? If so what do you think of it?
This has been labeled as warez in xda since it's a leaked beta. But I suppose people can talk about it as long they don't share the apk file..
I've played with it for a while but because I can't choose the default phone and browser app, I stopped playing with it. Also eats lots of ram.

I really doubt that's going to happen. SPB is a big company from what I understand (google them).

Anyways, I did try it out, but had to remove it since I kept getting unending "Activating..." and reloading.
But my impressions while I did use it were:
3D look very cool. But not especially useful.
Instant tap and click widgets very useful and great idea.
Lack of app drawer is undesirable.
It has some cool stuff, but isn't anything "groundbreaking" imo. SPB charged consumers about $30 for this on WM and Symbian I believe, doing the same on Android would be quite insane (considering it doesn't add any huge benefits like it did for those OS). I'm curious to see what they plan to charge, and it's something I could consider using as my default launcher... but nothing truly fantastic about it imo.
I used SPB at great lengths with my Windows phones. It was a resource hog, but it still ran smooth and looked awesome.
Didn't know they were actually working on Android...cool
Yep says its not compatible with my device.
works with the epic unfortunately.....

[APP] Extensive Notes

So I've actually had this in the market for a few months now but never actually posted here. This was one of the first apps I created and it just sort of grew and got an assortment of features. So if anyone wants to give it a go here is the market link:

Love this POWERFUL app. But love to have the following changes in the upcoming version.
1. Memorize the settings selection in Extra. E.g. "from" and "to" language for Google Translate, Currency converter.
2. Sorted list for Currency. (e.g. ANG > BHD > VEF ...etc). It's quite hard to find the currency I am looking for the current implementation.
Just downloaded it, very nice app, seems to have LOADS of functionality.

Best Facebook app?

Probably been asked a million times, but I can't find the answer, what is the best Facebook app? I need notifications at least every half hour, full features and speed. I bought friendcaster pro last year but lately it has been buggy and unusable, and the official app hogs data and is SLOW. Any help would be much appreciated

Yep, there is. In fact, type in "facebook alternative" in the Play Store and you will see there are several. The one I currently use is FBMX - Another Facebook Client. It seems to be faster -- and more reliable -- than the stock one and does everything I need it to do. I used to use Friendcaster too, but I agree that it has gotten too buggy lately; I liked it better before it became overly popular.

Multitasking: how bad is it?

Hi folks
I'm still on the edge between an iPhone and a HOX. Could someone please discuss the state of the multitasking issues on the AT&T HOX and summary of fixes?
Specifically my question is this: there are some services that always need to be running to get notifications, like free texting apps or skype. Some services upload photos in the background, like Dropbox. Is it true that these services get killed by the multitasking as well on stock?
I've heard that Dropbox does get killed. I've never heard anything about skype and similar apps that need to sit in the background listening, so I imagine they are working fine on stock Sense?

When I was on Sense roms with stock multitasking, I never had issues with long-running background services being killed. It was only things like the browser being killed and having to reload and other apps that have their front end killed.
Can't really comment on the services you mentioned, but just some general observations about multi-task:
Some people have complained that during games, if you do something else, like say someone sends you an SMS and you respond, that when you go back to the game, your progress will not have been saved. I don't have time for games these days. So I can't personally comment on that.
Really, it depends on how you use your phone. For some people, the multi-tasking behavior is a deal breaker. For me, I'm fine with it. I mostly only notice it when leaving the browser. It will almost always have to reload the webpage you were looking at.
Have you actually compared the iPhone and the One X in person? There really is no comparison between the two. The huge gorgeous screen of the One X makes the iPhone look like a toy.
You're worried about multitasking but you're willing to go iPhone? Lol hox will be fine
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
Well the iPhone is going to get a bigger screen. The PPI and brightness are almost the same between iPhone and HOX.
And iphone doesn't kill your game progress and clear your text entry fields when you switch apps. And it doesn't silently kill Dropbox while it's uploading (it does kill it, but gives Dropbox a chance to notify of that first).
The jailbreak tweaks for iPhone are for my purposes completely on par with android.
My only reasons for considering switching is that the iPhone is going to get harder and harder to jailbreak (I'm expecting a 6 month wait this time). plus lose google maps which is a huge debacle.
I'm open to HOX but would need a fix to the multitasking issues.

That's just a rumor, and its been the same (incorrect) rumor for the last 1-2 iPhone versions, at least.
My bet is on the screen size of the iPhone is not changing any time soon. If they make the screen much larger, and keep the resolution the same, it will look like crap. If they change the screen resolution, they fragment the iOS that they have keep pretty much unified for 5 years. People keep talking about the "iPad Mini" (something around a 7" iPad), but my hunch is that is not going to happen either, for the same reasons of not fragmenting iOS. But those are just my personal gut feelings.
And seriously, if you haven't held a One X in person, do it. The screen size is gigantic compared to the iPhone. You have to see it to believe it. My previous phone was a Desire Z, which had a form factor not much different from the iPhone. When I go back to it (pulled some files off it), I can't believe I ever used a phone with a screen that small. Similar feelings when I pick up my wife's iPhone.

There has been some fixes to multi-tasking, both available as a stand-alone mod, and on custom ROMs. So check out Development, and read more on it if nobody chimes in about those here. As I mentioned, I've been fine with multitasking. So I haven't tried any of the mods.
Also, the Asia 2.23 firmware makes changes to both the multitasking (how aggressively idle processes are killed) and free memory at boot (how much memory Sense takes). A new AT&T firmware (2.20) is just now rolling out OTA as we speak, and likely has the same tweaks. So that in itself might fix what you want. But like I said, I don't game these days, so I can't say.

I don't think it's going to be 4.7" big. That's quite a shoe to fill. PPI is less of an issue for both the phones. Unless you have amazing vision or whip out a magnifying glass, you can't even see individual pixels. A higher PPI is usually a better thing, but beyond a certain point, it becomes indistinguishable.

And iphone doesn't kill your game progress and clear your text entry fields when you switch apps. And it doesn't silently kill Dropbox while it's uploading (it does kill it, but gives Dropbox a chance to notify of that first).

At least with an HTC One X you can control how the multitasking behaves. However, I do want to address two issues: 1) the clearing of the text boxes has more to do with the apps you're using than the multitasking itself and 2) unlike the HTC One X, apps like Dropbox can't just linger in the background and upload new images as they're taken. I ran into that limitation quite a bit back when I still had my iPhone.

I know this may sound like blasphemy in this community, but I wouldn't ever recommend buying a phone simply based on what you can do after you root/jailbreak. Usually you can reasonably expect a method for root/jailbreak to come alone, but you can never guarantee it. Always pick a device based on how it suits your needs and desires without any extensive modifications.
All of this being said, even with multitasking being as it is on the HTC One X, I'd still recommend it over an iPhone. As previous users have mentioned, the effect of the stock multitasking setting is only visible on things like web browsers and some games. If you go under the system settings and modify its behavior, you'll probably achieve the desired effect. If you don't feel like tweaking system settings, you can always install an app like SMS Popup which lets you quick-rely to messages without ever leaving your current task.
One thing I do pride Android on is the ability to have background tasks for applications. With my iPhone I would find that (aside from default apps like Mail and Messages) certain apps wouldn't provide notifications when they should have. For example: if I hadn't launched Words with Friends since a reboot, I'd never get notifications from it. Same thing with uploading images from Dropbox.
The other thing that persuaded me to switch to an Android device was the ability to customize and personalize out of the box. On an iPhone, the most you can do is change backgrounds/sounds/icon arrangement. On an Android device you have full control over your home screen. You can manipulate icons arbitrarily (putting gaps between them, skipping pages, remove icons without uninstalling the app, etc), you can install widgets to quickly access information/settings/apps at a glance, live wallpapers, and even make shortcuts (such as a one-click "Directions to get Home" and "Sound Settings"). Heck, you can even install custom keyboards.
All-in-all it took me about a week to get used to how Android does things, but whenever I play with my old iPhone (my girlfriend uses it now), things just don't feel quite right. The best way to describe it is that on my HTC One X, I get to make the rules. I get to decide how things look and feel and how the system responds to my actions. Playing with my iPhone I feel like I'm not making any of my own rules. Sure, I can change some settings, but compared to Android it feels like a thin veil over how Apple things I should use my device.
Get everything you want now, or wait for a possibility.
Btw multitasking never kills any of those things mentioned. Drop box never stops during uploads.
Android> iOS

Thanks for the replies. I have spent about an hour playing with HOX in store and tons of time researching whether it can suit my needs.
Franklly it has been hard to track down android equivalents of everything I can do on jail broken iOS. For reading full emails without unlocking the device it looks like a combination of widget locker and a few widgets can do it, but it just feels a bit hacked together and not as polished as Lockinfo on iOS, which is a one-stop solution. And there doesn't quite appear to be any replacement for Activator, which is a unified gesture framework where you can do things like turn on the flashlight by pushing both volume buttons at the same time and bring up the previous app with a slide on the status bar. Now I know if I look hard enough something similar for android will turn up but will it be as well supported as these iOS tweaks with hundreds of thousands of users? not so sure.
In the I think the iPhone is under appreciated here in terms of how professional the jailbreak community is and how it can easily match android for power and tweak ability. The main issue is that apple is hiring the jailbreak developers and jail breaking itself will be incredibly hard as time progresses because it relies on patching binaries and finding vulnerabilities.
The multitasking seems to be improved in the 4.0.4 update.

Android as a whole is much better than ios. I owned four, yes four iterations of the iPhone and jail broke them all. I have also owned 2 android devices. Take it from someone who has owned and rooted/jail broke both. Android is better.

Hey, if the man wants to create an android vs iPhone thread, then state he wants the iPhone, who are we to correct him. He's not going to change his mind and never had any intention of doing so. Just let the sheep be.
I think you should just get the iPhone.

Some of the people here may say its not that bad, but trust me dude compared to other android phones its pretty damn bad, bad enough for me to get rid of the phone. Ie, if you are listening to music and browsing. Go change the song and come back to be greeted by the web browser reloading the WHOLE PAGE over again.
Really go play with one in the store before you make your decision id say, as a poster before me mentioned one of the gleaming features of android is its ability to multitask amazingly, if thats absent then its terrible. Imo the multi tasking on the hox is below even that of the iphone. Just really play with it before you make a decision, with that said i wouldnt necessarily say the hox is a worser phone than the iphone even, it isnt. Its a great phone and is still imo better than the 4s today.
I REALLLLY do miss my hox sometimes though, the amazing build quality. and the display really owns anything else on the market right now.

Nope, i used chrome actually. Also happens with tons of other apps, used to redraw my sms app all the time too.
Doesn't Android have some kind of popup that you can use to control your music without having to leave the app?

Alright, just tried both the stock browser with Pandora and the stock browser with google music player.... The page will not reload if I switch apps and change a song. So either you're lying or aren't using HTC's latest code. This is on CleanROM 4.5.

You're not honestly promoting the stock One X's multitasking ability, are you?

Well, the new recent update made multitasking a LOT better. As in it doesn't suck.

Correctamundo... I was referring the very well documented multitasking woes on 1.73 and 1.85. But from all I've read, the new update goes a long way to fix multitasking. Looking forward to getting it! I really love this phone, even if I do stick to only the stock ROMs.
