WOL and the Captivate - Captivate General

Anyone out there using the Captivate to wake up a computer in a LAN segment using WOL? I tried a couple WOL applications from the market to test WOL while connected via WiFi to my LAN. My laptop connected to the same router is able to send WOL packets and wake up my server successfully, but my Captivate can not. Using Wireshark I can see only ARP requests from my Captivate when I try to send WOL packets to the my server. No magic packets. During the same capture session I also send WOL packets from my laptop and they arrive fine. I read somewhere about an issue with Android 2.1 and Network Masks other than 255.255.255.0 could this be the issue? I thought WOL relied on MAC addresses only... but maybe not.

I use the "Wake on Lan" app and works well.

Solved... removed and re-installed the WOL app and now an option to send the WOL packets as broadcast to the 255.255.255.0 subnet appears under settings. Checking this option solved the problem.

Internet Sharing+VPN WM6 problem

I cant figure it out, I just installed the latest v. WM6 Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256)
Internet Sharing via Bluetooth works but... when i start my vpn either via ssl or ipsec (on laptop) NOGO. something is in between dont know what...so workaround:
Internet sharing via USB: the device tells me "connected", the new Network connection in control panel/xp tells me "connected" but there is no Internet connection. I try to ping 192.168.0.1 which it made gateway and this is not found. nothing nada. firewall off. nogo. repair. nogo.
*argh* I realize it are 2 different problem but in short: I can not connect as I usually did under the wm5 dialer (and I miss the status lights).
Anyone has a clue?
Hi !
I have the same problem with the same ROM. I didn't found any solution yet.
I didn't try Internet connection shring with Bluetooth. But your problem sounds as a proxy setting problem on your PDA connexion. You should take a look at those settings...
Let us know if you find anything.
edit :
Finally it's working, I re-installed ActiveSync 4.5 and now it's OK.
I reinstalled activesync, modded down to wm5, then again wm6 ...
and magic usb is working but...
My VPN connection on both BlueTooth or Usb is not working. I use the AT&T client to connect to our network but authentication fails with all vpn servers in the list.
That's a shame because this is really the only basic functionality i need to check my e-mail and stuff "on the road". Hmmm... down to WM5!
Unless someone has got VPN working?

sorry. stupid. forgot the checkmark on the authentication tab on the auto-created controlpanel > networkconnections > Windows Mobile 6 Connection > Authentication.
Great!
For reference, using the Cisco VPN client, with Bluetooth and internet sharing, does not work. With WM6, a Bluetooth PAN adapter is created on the PC, and the Cisco VPN doesn't bind to this type of adapter.
Using the same config, but with the USB cable, and the wireless modem, does work.
Unfortunately It does NOT work anymore.
Whatever I try I can not get connection to the Internet
- I start "connect"
- Plugin the usb cable
- The new network connections icon appears under network connections
- It pops up it is connected
- It has an assigned 192.168.0.2
But no internet connection, ping 192.168.0.1 can not be reached, etc...
I turned off the firewall to see if this was the problem. not.
Is there ayone who has got a clue? This is really frustrating.
For what it's worth, I'm using WM6 Black 2.5 on a Hermes (Cing 8525) and I'm able to use WM6 Internet Sharing via BT to connect my laptop to the internet and I am able to use my Cisco VPN client on my laptop to connect to my company's intranet. No problems here so I don't think it's a WM6 problem.... rather a configuration problem... either on your company's VPN concentrator side or your client side. You may want to chat with your IT/Ops dept for configuration settings.
No problems here nither. I use Vista on PC. I need to connect to several networks and just have made some tests. I could reach all of them. The fact is that most of them are built on Draytek routers not Cisco, but they also use IPSec and so on.
Yep I'm having the same problem, my VPN's worked fine with WM5, but went to Black 2.5 and now when I VPN, it connects, assignes me an IP, but wont let me ping the network.
I _think_ it's becuase now the fone shows up as a network rather than a modem, and assigns me a 192.168.0.x address, and the home network is in this too... any suggestions?
share internet connection with ppc
Can i use my ppc as the wireless adapter? do i need to use "wireless modem" or "activesync" to do this? For more detail, if my computer do not have wireless adapter, and now i want to use the wireless adapter on my ppc to connect to the internet. Is it posible?

Nexus and WOL - doesn't work for me :(

I installed this app http://android.mafro.net/
but it will not wake my QNAP 509 server that
is properly configured and will wake up from
any other PC on the network.
I tried ports 0,7,9 but still no luck
Any ideas or other WOL recommended app ?
Thanks
Anyone ?
Try the Router in DMZ?
I'm trying to send the magic packet on LAN so there is no firewall involved.
I used this program ( http) ://magicpacket.free.fr/ on my desktop to log if the magic packet arrives on my computer.
To send the magic packet from my nexus one i used aWOL Free ( http .androlib.com/android.application.uk-co-mallsoft-awolfree-jCA.aspx )
This worked fine.
Thanks for reply, I'll give it a try
Well, I tried but it doesn't work for me.
The application confirms that magic packet was received but when I test it to actually to wake the PC it doesn't work. ( once again it does work without problems from other computers on the LAN )
Any ideas what could be the problem ?
Thanks
Anyone ?
I don't know what else to try
dont know anymore
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Maybe its your PC settings that wrong then? Do you have the right power management settings?
WOL magic packets are pretty simple after all
It works just fine from 4 other computers on the network.
They can wake each other without any problems but
Nexus won't wake any of them and I can confirm using the utility
Argon007 posted that all of them receive the magic packet.
Indeed, i can't get it to work either. Something is missing or I'm missing something, I'll try to contact the author.

My bad, it does work, I used the node's IP address, it should be the networks broadcast address, in this case 192.168.0.255. Elementary I use it to startup a Asus commando mobo.
have you tried putting the broadcast address?
you can try the general 255.255.255.255, or calculate your own broadcast address doing an OR operation between your private subnet address and the complement of your subnet mask..
it works to me!..
Darn, it still doesn't work for me
All computers are on the same subnet 255.255.255.0
Router IP is 192.168.1.1
All computers use static address (192.168.1.2 3 4 ...)
They can wake each other without any problem using mc-wol
Settings in aWOL
Name: QNAP509
IP Address 192.168.1.40
MAC Address : 00:08:9B:BA:xx:xx ( verified and correct)
Port: Default 9 ( tried 7 and 0 as well without any success)
Also when the NAS or any other PC is wake I can access shared folders
from my N1 without problems
Any ideas ?
Thanks
did you try even writing the broadcast address in the IP address field?
on my N1 i'm using the program "Wake on Lan" and it works..
I used Wake on lan as well and it didn't work for me,
that's why I tried aWOL.
Yes, I trid brodcast address 192. 168. 1. 255 - didn't work
SUCCESS !
I tried brodcast address with Wake On Lan and it's working
Thanks for the help !
Can you wake up the NAS from any other PC on your LAN? Can you wake up anything from the Nexus on the LAN?
Yes and No
It's all working now
Once again - THANKS

Cannot access local lan web site (sometimes)

I have various machines on my lan in 192.168.1.*, I have a local DNS server to give those machines names. This normally works great, but my new Samsung Galaxy S21 sometimes says "cannot access" when I point it at a web address of a server running on my lan. I'll use a network utility app to do a DNS lookup of the other system, and it will tell me the correct address, then I'll use the same network utility to do a traceroute, and it will try to talk to a local IP I do not have in my network, in my DNS database, or anywhere in the set of addresses my router knows about. Where does this ghost address come from? Does the phone imagine that is the gateway it ought to be using for some reason? (The router's DHCP server certainly doesn't claim an unknown address is the gateway).
Every time I start trying to investigate the problem in more detail, everything suddenly starts working perfectly.
Does this ring a bell for anyone? Any clue what is going on? Maybe I should assign my phone's network statically and see if it works better.

One Plus 8 attacks my LAN VPN gateway...

This started a couple of days ago, and I have now mitigated it with a couple of firewall rules on the VPN gateway, as well as shutting down the dhcpcd server on that server (which I don't need anyway, and which probably should have been stopped long ago).
My LAN has a raspberry pi 4 running their debian firmware that is configured as a VPN gateway. It connects my LAN via ProtonVPN to the internet. This gateway is set up with a static IP address (192.168.2.49) on the LAN, and is configured to use another RPI on my LAN to get its DNS (192.168.2.50).
My one month old running OOS 11 OnePlus8 is rooted with magisk, and I have blocked most of the google stuff from the internet using afwall, and suspended non-essential system services using greenify. When connected to my LAN, the phone has a static IP address (192.168.2.71), has its gateway set to the VPN gateway (192.168.2.49), and its DNS to my local rpi DNS (192.168.2.50).
DHCP on my LAN is provided by my router (192.168.2.1).
WIFI on my LAN is provided by an enterprise-grade tp-link hotspot.
Starting a few days ago, for reasons mysterious, when the phone connects to the LAN, the VPN gateway would promptly go offline. Because I run it headless, I would be forced to reboot it - which made diagnosis a bit of a pain. Finally, I found a log entry on the VPN gateway that informed me that my OnePlus was trying to claim the ip address of the VPN gateway as its own (192.168.2.49) in spite of being set to use 192.168.2.71. This duplicate IP was causing dhcpcd on the VPN gateway to immediately take down its eth0 interface. This would break ALL connectivity because I have wifi on that RPI disabled.
Prior to this problem involving the OnePlus, that RPI had been up continuously for over 400 days, so it should certainly be considered to be reliable at the job it does and almost certainly the problem is with the OnePlus.
So, for some reason the OnePlus is trying to assert its assigned gateway address as its IP rather than the 192.168.2.71 that is set, at least in some packet that it uses to announce itself; once it is connected it works properly (which means the right IP address is being used).
I have deleted, then re-created the wifi connection profile and doing that did not cause the problem to go away.
I have another RPI VPN gateway on my IOT VLAN (192.168.24.0/24). No DHCP is available on the VLAN (a security measure), and I do have a profile for the phone that allows it to connect to the VLAN. It works without issue there, but then dhcpcd has been and remains shut down on that RPI. I suppose I could start dhcpcd on that server and see if the phone then breaks it too. I won't do this unless there is some merit to doing so...if it would help find the basic problem.
As I say, shutting down dhcpcd and blocking all dhcp traffic to/from the LAN VPN gateway mitigated the problem. But that the problem could occur at all says something is wrong, and I'm pretty sure it isn't a problem on my network.
This seems most likely to be a bug in OnePlus firmware, though why it would manifest after a month is a mystery to me. Does anyone have any insight? Or does anyone have any suggestions for another place on XDA where this post might more appropriately be placed?
I was pretty sure no one would have any idea about this. I have mitigated it by turning off dhcpcd on the VPN gateway and I am not inclined to do a deeper dive; I have too much else to do.

Assigning a static IP address to a phones hotspot

How can I assign a static IP address to my phones hotspot?
I use the hotspot on my Samsung M31 to connect my laptop running Windows 10 to the internet.
I also have Oracle's Virtual Box VM running a few test websites on the laptop on Ubuntu Server 22.04, which need a static IP address to access.
A few days back when I ran ipconfig at the Windows command prompt, it showed my wireless IP address as 192.168.166.135. Today, it show as 192.168.35.125. Meaning, all my sites are now broken. Is there a way to stop the hotspot from changing IP addresses?
Can someone please help?
Thanks,

I don't know the answer to your question directly as your situation is more complicated than is mine but I will try to help in so much as you can at least check what your current settings are.
My setup is only similar to yours in that I have apps (such as vysor & scrcpy) on Windows which are expecting a static IP address from my phone. However, where my setup differs from yours is I'm not using my phone as a hotspot - the router is assigning the IP addresses.
However, maybe what I've learned by randomizing my MAC address on each connection can help you - where I say maybe - as I your situation is using the phone as a hotspot and mine is passively accepting the IP address handed to the phone by the router.
In Android 11, the phone's Wi-Fi radio MAC address can be randomized per SSID, in which case the "address reservation" feature of most routers (often incorrectly called "static" IP addresses) won't work as intended. Worse, in Android 12, in Developer options, you can set a switch to randomize the Wi-Fi radio MAC address of the phone on every connection, regardless of the SSID.
Hence, you have to set the "static" IP address request in the phone itself, so that the router will respect that request for a static IP address.
(As an extra complexity, my SSID broadcast is hidden for privacy reasons (not for security - but privacy), which complicates things only a tiny bit as you have to turn off auto-reconnect for privacy.)
See the images below where maybe (but maybe not!) this information will help you track down why in your (hotspot) case, this static IP address requrest isn't being honored in your hotstpot setup.

Hi ,
if You are the lucky owner of a rooted phone you can try this:
How do I assign a permanent static IP address to hotspot in Android 10
I would like to assign a permanent static IP address to hotspot in Android 10 (Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 for Natrium by LuK1337, rooted with Magisk v20.3 and updated to Jan 11, 2020 build). Now whenever I turn on the hotspot, it assigns a...
