[Q] HTC Magic bought from China has null IMEI - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I am a total noob when it comes to Android O/S and i need to know if i am screwed or not when it comes to this phone.
I bought a phone from China on AliExpress and the sole selling point for me was that it said it had a genuine Android O/S on it and not an Android-like user interface.
The phone looked like an HTC Magic but it said it was an ePhone.
When i got the phone, it was branded HTC magic and the box, stickers, everything says HTC on it. I have 2 problems with the phone. It won't connect to Wi-Fi networks or GSM networks. The Wi-Fi gives an error while scanning and turns off the Wi-Fi and the GSM also gives an error while scanning.
After trying to figure out what the problem was, i noticed the IMEI shows as 0000000000 in Android but if i look inside the phone, i do see an actual IMEI number. I have reset the factory settings but that didn't do anything.
Is there a way for me to fix this so Android sees the real IMEI?
Here are details about the phone :
HTC Magic A6161
P/N : 99HFU012-00 B
I am located in Montreal, Canada
and my SIM card is for the Rogers network
Thanks for any help you can provide.

You might not have a genuine HTC phone. Reading around several web forums, Alibaba/AliExpress seem to be advertising legit items, but then send out cheap fakes.
Do you have any pics of what you received? Chances are it isn't even running Android...

[Q] "Your Sim card does not allow a connnection to this network"

This seems to be an existing issue as plenty of people online are reporting it but nobody seems to have settled on a reason or a fix.
Basically... I bought my wife a Desire S, unlocked, from a store in Dublin, Ireland. She's been using it on the Meteor network since December 25th, until two nights ago when she lost all service. Now when you try to connect to her network you get the error, "Your Sim card does not allow a connnection to this network". This has happened with any simcard we put into the phone, and all of those simcards including the one she was using when it failed, work in other handsets (my Nexus S, her old HTC Hero). GPRS data is still transferring although the phone gives no indication that this is happening.
I've tried several of the reported "fixes" that i've found online, pulling the battery, disabling the radio, etc and none have had any effect. I just did a factory reset and that has had no effect. When I boot into recovery it says *locked* at the top, but I assume that refers to the bootloader rather than the sim lock.
I assume it's as is from the factory and that no alternative radios were flashed prior to purchase. We haven't done anything in the way of custom roms/radios/recoveries with this phone, my wife isn't technical enough to do so.
I don't want really want to unlock/root if I can help it as i've contacted HTC and want it to fall under warranty if necessary. I haven't gone back to the vendor yet as they don't open until tomorrow. It's not the most upmarket shop in the world and I paid cash, so while I don't forsee any problem with an exchange etc, I don't want to have to rely on it either.
Android version: 2.3.5
Sense version: 3.0 (OTA update)
Software version: 2.10.401.8
Any help would be really appreciated...
Before you try anything else, have you run an IMEI check to make sure that the phone isn't blacklisted by the networks (reported as lost, stolen, suspicious behaviour etc)?
https://prod.eie.net.au/portal/template/MYMIMEIInquiry.vm/action/IMEIInquiryAction
If this one falls over then just Google "IMEI checker free" and have a play.
If is comes back clean then take it back to the shop - they have the first responsibility, especially after such a short period of time.
Thanks for that, I was scouring the internet for something that would check that.
"Your IMEI Number is currently unblocked."
Which is good news I suppose although it doesn't help me much.
My only issue with bringing it back to the vendor is that I bought it from an internet cafe in Dublin which also sells unlocked phones*. I could have gone with a reputable online provider but I was also short of time. I did get a receipt and full warranty with it though. I was hoping I could solve this myself to avoid having to rely on the shop, but we'll see how they are at after sales service tomorrow.
Thanks again.
* I did this for a reason, the networks don't sell unlocked phones and even pre-paid are network locked for up to the 12 months. We're leaving Ireland soon so this was a necessity.

[Q] HTC Sensation - SIM can't connect

Hello everyone!
First of all, I am not an expert in Android but I am definitely not a noob. I have even watched the noob video (so funny!).
I have looked everywhere to try to solve my problem and I couldn't find a suitable answer. And yes, I even asked my mother! She doesn't know the answer, that's why I am asking the experts now!
Ok, I will try to be brief and clear:
A few days ago I found on the street an HTC Sensation and I thought "this is my lucky day!". Oh well, sort of...
So the first thing I did was to unlock the screen, and obviously there was a code to access so I couldn't really know to who this device belonged to. So I started the bootloader, reset to factory, take de SD out and format it. Whoever lost the mobile was most probably feeling bad already so I think that a bit of respect for his/her privacy was the least I could do.
So I tried my SIM card (Giffgaff) and it didn't accept it. So I have unlocked the bootloader using the official HTCDev method, then put it S-OFF and unlocked to any network. All this following threads from XDA Developers - Thank you!
OK, now the problem is that whatever I do, the mobile will not let me connect to any provider, I always have a "your SIM card does not allow connection to this network" message. But the data connection works!!! I just don't get it.
If I search for networks, it will show me all of them, but never allows me to connect. So it is not an aerial problem.
At the moment I have installed DarkSense 4.0.4 (great ROM by the way)
HTC Sensation (No branding on it)
Kernel 3.0.16-v1.5.2 SebastianFM #1 SMP PREEMPT
Radio 11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
Firmware 3.33
SuperCID
I have tried flashing loads of different combinations of ROMs, kernels, radios and firmwares with no luck!
I have tried SIM cards from all the major UK networks and same result.
Every function works fine except that it will refuse to connect to any network, but the data connection works! I just don't get it. To be sure that I was not accessing the internet via Wifi, I even turn off my router. I can access the internet via the data connection from Giffgaff.
Help!
I thought that most probably whoever lost it, declared it as lost to O2 (that was the SIM on it) and this IMEI was banned. But if that was the case I don't think that the data connection would work. It can't be SIM/Network locked as the mobile never asked me for any unlock code when putting a new SIM.
Does anyone know how I can I fix this?
Thanks in advance!
When the IMEI is banned, odds are major functionalities wont work. But things such as mobile network and such might.
bad esn
Since you found the phone on the street, the former user probably contracted their carrier and told their carrier that they lost their phone. I think the phone has a bad ESN.
Check out what a bad ESN is here: http://reviews.ebay.com/What-is-a-q...ne-and-should-I-buy-it?ugid=10000000175264001
How to find out if bad ESN
I was afraid that it would be banned.
This is the only plausible possibility, seen that softwarewise I think I have tried everything possible.
But do you guys know if there is a way to confirm that? Same way you have services where you can text a car's number plate and it will tell you if the car has been written off.
And, if the phone is banned, will it be only here in the UK, or you think it will be in all the European Union? Or even worldwide?
Because if it's only here, I'll send it to my brother in Portugal...

You could try contact the phone company which the phone was tied to and ask them? At this point its only a glorafied media player for you, but the original owner may give you a reward?

IMEI on Chinese Smart Phone

I have a Cobalt SP300 I bought on eBay. It has a MT6575 SoC that has a 3G radio integrated according to the manufacturer. I know other phones like the Zopo 100 with this same chip can access 3G bands of 850/1900 mhz. I looked up the IMEI number on some websites and it shows it to be a basic flip phone from early 2005. I currently have a feature phone unlimited data plan on my account, that worked fine on 3G on my old phone, but I can only get EDGE on this phone. When I go on the AT&T website and look at my account, it shows the device as unknown. Could it be since the device is unknown they restrict the data to EDGE only?
I happen to have an old 3G flip phone. I can be sure it will never be used again since the pins on the SIM slot broke. If I were to change the IMEI number to that phone's IMEI number, is it possible it would allow 3G?
You can't change your phones imie number its illegal and would get you into serious trouble
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I have one which had two legal printed imeis which worked until I pressed factory reset which wiped them. How can I put them back.
There is nothing illegal in this as I have proof they are the phones numbers
sent by reversed alien technology....
You will find no info here on editing the imei as this is illegal and not to be talked about here.

[Q] Imported 1plus1 from China via Amazon - Cellular does not work - Help !

Hi All,
Taken delivery of a new one plus one today. Delivered and shipped by Amazon, but supplied by a company in China.
All elements of the phone work except the cellular. (wifi is fine)
Followed all the You tube clips to ensure sim is plugged in the right way. (i did manage to receive 1 message regarding a vm - thats all.)
No Cellular. BTW its on Orange / EE . In the settings the hardware does not appear to have the radio switched on.
Also no IMEI....
Does any one know if this can be fixed from a software perspective ?
I have upgraded other phones in the past but no experience with this one.
Any help greatly appreciated otherwise its going back to Amazon....
Thanks all.
Hi,
Try to look for a tutorial how to modify IMEI on android. I had a case with another phone similar issue. Just googled how to modify IMEI, entered one from back plate and it worked.

Is that not illegal?
is your carrier using wcdma or FDD-LTE? if so the chinese version has a network lock on these bands which I believe can be easily unlocked.

Serial number does not match - what does that mean? Can it affect connectivity?

TL;DR: Why would my phone serial number in the setting/cover not match? Could it result in problems with connectivity or mobile data I am experiencing?
Longer version:
My phone (SM-870A) worked fine in Europe but in South Korea has trouble with mobile data (everything else is ok). My provider couldn't figure out what's wrong, so after the engineer at the service center couldn't, neither, I sent it to main Samsung service center / factory and they are telling me that they identified the problem: my phone's serial number doesn't match the the on the battery cover. (IMEI numbers DO match; I also verified this myself because they sent me photos of the back cover and from the phone's menu). They seem reluctant/unable to fix anything, and are suggesting I contact the seller of the phone for further explanation/warranty.
I tried googling, but I couldn't find out much about why a non-matching serial numbers could be related to connectivity problem, or what could it mean for the phone (perhaps it was refurbished? I was told I the phone is new, but a former unused display model... through it came already with the OS updated to the newest version). I am sure the phone is running unrooted stock ROM..
Do you think I got scammed in Europe by the original seller, or is the service center in Korea being lazy/under informed and cannot identify the real problem?
